  • At first, this wasn't going to be Asbo 51, but the lightened and rebalanced crank, overbored and shortened ally barrel, high compression piston and ported and tuned cylinder head which eventually passed through my workshop are all very much trademark features of such an engine, and this won't be the first where a complete engine or machine have not been present.
Here, I discuss some of the tuning work and components used in helping to create 'Asbo' 51.

It all comes down to experience and skill.
You've been there and got the oily t-shirt. 😉

I had a customer who just had to keep changing his exhaust pipes. With the way I had his engine set up, Goldie pattern pipes would melt the piston crowns at 115mph, whereas they had been perfectly safe with Unity short cones.

G'day Paul, you have done a great job upgrading the performance of the Royal Enfield Bullet 500 barrel and head, l have done that on my RE 500 cafe racer, and it's performance is much better than a standard Bullet, the owner will be pleased in your effort, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.

From memory of the videos of your previous ASBO engines, the owner is in for an incredible treat! Nice to see all those components looking shiny and new. I'm wondering now how many other old manufacturers have produced engines that could benefit from the ASBO treatment or whether it is really the Indian RE specs that leave you with the opportunity to make such a remarkable improvement in performance?

Nearly any old motorcycle engine can be tuned to boost performance, but Indian RE Bullet engines especially so!

The only other thing "i feel " in my years of playing with these things is the high loading of the valve guides Those valves, the angle and thus the loading were the "thoughts of those times " that's the only thing I would change on mine a "flatter piston " and those valve guides I adjusted the chain on my daily driver after 600km might even look at the points one day ,,,, the reliability of these things is bordering on boredom levels !

Hello Paul. I have a question for you. I am starting the process of looking for a late 1960's or 1970 BSA or Triumph twin. Either 500 or 650 is fine. Would you say there is much difference in quality & reliability between Triumph & BSA? I once owned a 1971 BSA 650 Firebird Scrambler oil in frame model way back in 1972 when I was 20 yrs old. The bike was faultless while I owned it but it was also nearly new. I also owned a new 1976 Bonny 750 & had a few issues caused by vibration. Both bikes handled well. I want something from the classic 1970 or back yrs now. Any suggestions you could give would be much appreciated and thank you so very much for your channel of which I am a subscriber.

Guess this question didn't rate an answer. So possibly Paul could do a post on the differences in quality & reliability between the later model BSA & Triumph bikes? Would be quite interesting.
