    Good job Jeff. My hay haulers are N14 boys. That's all they run. The boss of the outfit told me that the red top N14s are the ones that you want. Years ago, I mechaniced at the county road department shop and we got 3 green Freightliner day cabs for belly dump work. They all had N14s with "Spinner" brand oil centrifuge filters on them. They did a fair job of getting the heavy contaminates out of the oil. They work on a slip stream system .

    OK Jeff great video. I'm a Detroit series 60 guy but i have driven plenty of Cummins powered trucks and they are just as good maybe use a little less fuel. I have driven Cats as well but mainly in machinery applications. I'd do up that engine for just the same reasons you say and chuck it straight back into that truck. To put anything else in would be an unnecessary and expensive exercise when your critics have to consider the purpose of this vehicle, as a money making fleet unit and nothing more.
    p.s. You're Not Stupid. Older Guys Rock!

    Hey Jeff great video as always. On your batter set you can purchase a buzz bar that will go on the studs of the batteries and connect all three together Volvo uses them. Check with fleet pride or Napa either should be able to get them. Also, on your cables where they go through the round hole on the back of the batter box be sure to check them very well for signs of wear through the insulation. Pete’s and Kenworth’s are notorious for cutting through the insulation and starting fires right there in that spot. Rock on Brother Jeff will win in the end.

    Those batteries are Interstates and came with Petey when I got it. I robbed one for another machine (an 8" stationary irrigation pump powered by a 12 Valve Cummins) and threw that Excide in Petey that I bought for the pump. Just never switched Um' back around.. Yeah, mis-matched I know but back then Jerry Brown sat in Gavin's office and the shit show by the EPA of forcing us to sell perfectly good trucks was well under way!!

    If everyone would change their oil every 6 months for cars, SUV’s, and small trucks and every 12 months for heavy diesel equipment, but if the equipment is is over oil change hours oil NEEDS to be changed out at 8 months. Then no one would have to do this overhaul.

    My guess on the three batteries is it came from a warm climate and they cut corners and just used 3 instead of 4. Pretty common in warm places cutting corners if the truck stays in that area.

    Many years ago I helped a friend with a worn out NTA-400 an things were pretty much similar to this situation. We contacted Cummins Re-Con and gave them the CPL number and got a great quote on a factory reman with factory warranty. Thats the way we went. Not sure if they still have that program or not. Only take a phone call to check er out. My last three KW's I ordered with 3 group 31 batteries mostly for weight saving. Running out of BC I ran a lot of north stuff right up to the Yukon...never had a problem battery wise anytime of the year.

    I know Cummins won't turn cranks for rebuild as per policy but if the engine came in with a turned crank with good history we could use undersized bearings. Normally good machine shops will do hardness test before turning crank because soft cranks can happen and will fail.

    Back in the 80s when I was at a truck dealership the L.A. Times bought about a dozen new Volvos with N14s. They had taken delivery of a few when it was discovered the engines didn't have Calif CARB compliant CPLs. Turns out the only difference was injection timing. We had to go into brand new engines and re-time the injection timing. It was nice working on clean stuff but what a pain in the ass for such a small difference in "emissions". CARB definitely sucks- then and even more now.

    Hi Jeff,
    All our Cummins had 4 batteries wired in series / parallel. The Hot Shot is the way to clean a truck. We used a Steam Jenny until the coil rotted away. Then we went to high pressure and just didn't clean the same way as hot water.

    • @gullreefclub
      @gullreefclub 10 дней назад

      Ok which is we’re the batteries hooked up in series or were they hooked up in parallel? The only way know you would have 4 batteries with hooked up in series and also in parallel is if you had 6 volt batteries and a 12 volt charging/starting system or a 12 volt batteries and 24 volt charging/starting system. PACCAR did have that relay system for a time for 24 starting that I have seen older trucks from the Great White North but that seemed to go away thankfully when battery technology stared improving. I not trying to smart donkey just trying to understand what you were saying. Have a good day and a better tomorrow
