you joke, but people actually HAVE found out that youtube pushes video harder if theyre the first one someone has uploaded in a timeframe thats longer than their normal interval.
6:58 Nah, Schaffrillas has said himself that his Megamind video was simply a response to the already building cult following and understanding that Megamind was gaining at the time the video released and serves more so as a culmination of those thoughts and feelings on the movie. He didn't singlehandedly change discussions around Megamind, he just saw plenty of other moviegoers online expressing their appreciation for an underrated DreamWorks movie so he thought he'd throw his hat into the ring too.
I have a friend who years ago showed me a video of him spawning tons of Minecraft wardens and having them kill a wither. I told him that it looks super cool and he should post it to YT, the resulting video was "Warden Death Ray" and it very quickly gained an excess of a million views. He's tried capitalizing on it since, I've helped him out a bit, but he always that video looming over him the whole time, being unable to get even 1 percent of the success it did, and yet he's actually putting effort into his other stuff. Only a few months ago did I finally escape the shadow of the video that got me popular, my Disguises video (one that I am proud of). It still has the most views, but my engineer video is now gaining more than it does on a daily basis, and another recent one of mine seems to have broken it again. It feels good knowing that I'm not a one-hit wonder now. That's the scary thing of having a video that blows up, you then have to somehow try top it's success, and that's difficult if you didn't do it on purpose.
i really appreciate how genuine you are. lotta youtubers always keep up their internet personas so its really refreshing when someone just say their true thoughts
I’ve experienced this all too well on my old channel. It really can be a pain when a shitpost you made back when you were throwing stuff at the wall manages to blow up which is exactly what happened with my portal radio video. Luckily I’ve had decent algorithm luck with my newer channel but there’s definitely a bit of both skill and luck when trying to get traction like you said. Great video man, you’re doing awesome!
Same. But it's over 1 "anomaly" (or videopasta as they call it nowadays.) (if you don't know what a anomaly/videopasta is. it's basically remakes of creepypastas or even weird occurrences on live TV.)
All of us are forever cursed to have our most popular videos be some stupid meme or trend. While the videos we put our heart and soul on barely even reach 100 views
100% agree. And it's not just videos, but any creative work, such as mods for PC games. I make character mods for Guitar Hero World Tour Definitive Edition. And some of my most popular characters are just meme characters, such as the Geometry Dash cube and a literal Table. Characters that I speedran to make have 688 and 713 downloads respectively. While characters that I have modeled myself from scratch that took several months to make, such as my fursona and Herbie the love bug only have 499 downloads *combined.* Less than either of these meme characters. I actually hate the fact that I made a character mod for a game that is a literal table which I speedran to make has more downloads than characters that I modeled myself for months combined. I hate it.
it's still crazy how Mark's Yandere Sim video is his most popular video that isn't FNAF or the randomly viral shit posts, it's easy to forget how mutch the Dev threw away cuz he didn't want to make a game
I found u thanks to the Ludwig video and im so glad i did. Authenthic, meaningfull and inspiring videos. Reminded me why youtube is so special and that i should try to create something of my own, and i will eventually.
The day I watched your Ludwig video, I thought it was so good and unique I watched a few of your other videos and thought “how come he’s made better videos that people haven’t recognized?” A month later, you post this. Keep going, you’re a really unique creator and I can’t wait for you to get 100K.
Jimmy here was such a jump scare to see on this video. I never hear anyone talk about him. I love his channel and I’m unreasonably glad that you brought him up lol.
So true. A TMNT Mashup video I made (that wasn't even edited too well) got more views than a short animated "movie" that took me and other creators an entire year to make. I'm still grateful that people have seen my stuff though.
I always see this happen, and it makes me feel guilty for not being interested in their other content and just watching the viral video. You can see the optimism they gain for the opportunity they think they have, and the disappointment when they inevitably cant make anything of it. Some of them do and some don't have the talent to justify it but either way its just a little sad and we all contribute to it. Thats why when ive made my random shit on my channel I always have zero expectations for it lmao, not worth the trouble. Not that I have the skill to be a youtuber anyways
This is an interesting vid. I hate Joe fans who only talk about Dog of Wisdom. These are people who don't even know what Great The Show is. It's the Jack Stauber - Buttercup effect. My other favorite instance of this is Xarlable's alt channel having the "apple bottom jeans, boots with the jeans" vid with over 2 million views. Xarlable's been a mainstay of YTPMVs for over a decade.

I got this recommended after, well, not watching any of your videos (not because of disinterest but because it hadnt been recommended) for a fuck long. this might also go big, maybe bigger
I can totally relate, my most successful video is random meme image with music on it uploaded 2 years ago it has over half a million views and all of my viral videos are just different iteration of that meme, I don't think 8 will ever capture the same success of those videos but I am still grateful that they put me where I am right now, without them I don't think I would have continued on RUclips
I'm very lucky to have my biggest video be something I can actually be proud of, but I still want to surpass it and it's hard to think that I might never do it, but it's better to keep working than get hung up on things. I can't tell if something like this is my dream or nightmare.
Relatable. The Atlas Earth ytpmv that I made in a day became the most popular video on my channel compared to other videos that I spent more time and effort on. Though I'm glad that said ytpmv has brought more eyeballs to my other content, which has benefitted me positively.
my step dads channel is going through this and he just started. he loves to film scenery and art type of things and ASMR types of things....yet his most popular video as of now is him mixing concrete and working on a neighbors patio for some reason.
Wow man, just wow. You really shine when it comes to these meta videos, the videos just hook me in and keep me engaged the whole time because you are saying some real stuff, it feels like you are talking to me while I also get the sense that your are making the video for yourself. It's a style of content that you seem to have mastered inadvertenly, as for you its just as simple as grabbing your mic and speaking from the heart (so it seems). Im calling it now this video is becoming your new most popular video!
This video is so real. I have a bunch of random remixes as my most popular songs uploaded on my YT that are completely different to what I usually make which is extremely demotivating at times.
Jep... same. The two videos that stand out the most on my channel view-wise were absolutely low effort productions. xD One i did rather sloppy, because i didnt enjoyed the game that much (doing Reviews) and had time pressure to get it done and the other isnt even scripted in the first place. I kinda think about streamlining my process to be faster, because rewriting a script three times to make my points better obviously isnt worth it. :D
this is super relatable. a few weeks ago my channel gained almost 300 subscribers in the span of a month, but it was all from a stupid video i had no faith in.
The reality is that you cannot choose how you are remembered. You cannot be perceived the way you perceive yourself, because perception is one of those concepts that is unique to every single person including yourself. You have two choices when you get a hit. Either keep rolling with it, or don't. Whichever choice makes you the happiest is the choice you should make. I recently stopped chasing the algorithm because it doesn't make me happy and doing my own thing makes me happier. While it would be nice to just churn out whatever makes people subscribe to my channel more and be happy with that, that goes against my nature and I need to let go of the vain desire for more attention. In a world where people are more worried about metrics rather than what gives them life, it's very refreshing to go the route of self actualization. I've been obsessed with numbers, trends for so long, I forgot to ask myself why I even like them in the first place. I'm fascinated by meta's, but I don't enjoy participating in them. And sometimes, meta's are so archaic and without reason that people go mad trying to understand them when sometimes they're not intended to be understood in the first place. Content creators burn out trying to appease lifeless sorting algorithms that don't understand the nuance of the human experience. There's a reality out there to live, and at any moment it could be gone tomorrow. Quite a waste going through the anxiety of being known when chances are you won't even be known for the reasons you wanted in the first place.
i can relate. My most viewed video is a terrible video that was hella outdated and fillied with misinfo hell the updated version of said video didn't even reach a FRACTION of the original this truly is a "Plankton farts and dies" moment
Thanks for a good video with the good message, I do think that it would be beneficial in a long run to try to focus on more sustainable success, over short term one
Sadly the worst part of blowing up early in the algorithm is people trying to milk the 3 seconds of fame they got, which they can't really replicate because they haven't developed their skills enough to make another hit (like understanding how to retain audiences and attract viewers). At least when it's a video they took effort in, if it's on a shitpost then it's truly over. Also this is video feels so cozy, the music choice really compliments your voice
Had this exact thing happen to me, Wouldn't say its my worst video, but it was one of my laziest videos (took me like an hr to make) and it absolutely blew up, and the rest of my content (despite still doing well imo) dosent even come close to that original shitpost, which sometimes makes me a little sad but im still happy i managed to make something super popular
I’ve definitely gone through this before. Very rarely do my projects that take more than a few days to make ever get as successful as the ones that I make in like an hour. Doesn’t upset me, just find it interesting. Algorithms are weird.
Kinda saw it happen real time with "Genesis Films". I used to watch some of the videos mainly for Halo machinima then later some Halo animations, which has some decent thousand views. Then i saw some anime girl killing shitpost that was reposted everywhere, later realizing it's from his channel of which gain millions of views. Later the channel would still upload some Halo animations alongside some anime girl massacres, the former would get decent 100k-200k views while the later would easily get 500k to millions of views. I mean he's definitely having fun making more of those shitpost, even made a funny apology video in the form of a Halo Reach machinima. He's probably fine with it but i can kinda see his love for Halo still bleeds into anime girl killings when some of them just loops back to Halo lol.
I like this video a lot. I loved the the proving Ludwig wrong video. But this video feels a lot more hopeful. At least in my eyes. My best performing video was almost outdone by a video with some of the worst audio issues on my entire channel. And I was terrified that it would be my legacy. Some of the best performing videos on my channel are the ones that have significant problems with them. And the videos I've spent the most time working on perform well below average. It doesn't help that my channel is ancient by RUclips standards. But at least there's hope that maybe I'll be a one hit wonder in the future.
Relatable, my most popular video was a short of a stupid meme trend on the game I make content on and its by far the least effort I put in, but I won't lie when I said it's the reason I even have a channel to begin with If I ever start a second channel on a different game I'm hoping my most popular video there also ends up being
More or less this exact thing happened to me on my main channel... I made a rather crappy Minecraft animation when I was 12 and now it sits at 3,8 million views. And I just have to live with that.
Honestly a big reason for this is this that it's shorter videos are easier to watch and don't have to pass people's interests check if it's a shitpost. The problem as a viewer is when uploaders decide to do things like just smacking the popular video off their channel or constantly insulting people for prefering the meme
I watched your first viral video, didn't subscribe, but then the algorithm showed me this one and I watched it, realized I forgot to subscribe, and did The algorithm is a fickle thing, just "Oh he made a video about this, and a lot of people watched it, if he makes another video about the same topic, people are more likely to watch it than if it's a video about some other unrelated topic," which leads to people feeling trapped by the first thing that got successful. It's just how it works, you're competing with others for attention in a simple numbers game. If you want togo beyond that, you have to be so unique that people want to go out of their way to search your name. In the search feature that barely works That's just how this platform is.
it's not that much of a surprise that someone's short shitpost pulls more numbers than their series or video essay. It's much easier for friends to share, put the video on their phone when out, or stick it on someone's tv quickly when they want to show it to them. "Do you want to see a funny cat video" is always going to be better received than "would you like to see this great 45 minute essay on aqueducts i saw it's very funny" during regular day to day interactions, as it's so much less of a time infringement, and so by pure viral metrics it's just bound to do better also re: your video it probably did help a lot that ludwig talked about on stream. Which ironically was the advantage you were trying to not rely on.
3:18 omg this situation is way too familiar :( I made some random low effort edits of something a few years ago and somehow both of them are the most popular videos on my channel, and I haven't been able to make anything that has been able to catch up to them in terms of statistics since
The reasons in my opinion that makes that "why i made this channel" video the most viewed one on your channel are quite simple: -very interesting video idea -good title -really nice and simple to understand thumbnail -and most importantly its actually a good video with good pacing, editing etc which made people stick around till the end

Some of the best performing videos on my channel are the ones that have significant problems with them. And the videos I've spent the most time working on perform well below average. It doesn't help that my channel is ancient by RUclips standards. But at least there's hope that maybe I'll be a one hit wonder in the future.
Relatable, my most popular video was a short of a stupid meme trend on the game I make content on and its by far the least effort I put in, but I won't lie when I said it's the reason I even have a channel to begin with
If I ever start a second channel on a different game I'm hoping my most popular video there also ends up being
Having a face of a famous RUclipsr in the thumbnail apparently will boost it in the algorithm as well…
I wondered why Noodle turned comments off on their "just buy a new one" video. Sucks that they're ashamed of it that much, it gave me a giggle :(
More or less this exact thing happened to me on my main channel... I made a rather crappy Minecraft animation when I was 12 and now it sits at 3,8 million views. And I just have to live with that.
I agree with the video at the end.
But I also get the feeling of luck than skill when it comes to youtube.
Honestly a big reason for this is this that it's shorter videos are easier to watch and don't have to pass people's interests check if it's a shitpost. The problem as a viewer is when uploaders decide to do things like just smacking the popular video off their channel or constantly insulting people for prefering the meme
I watched your first viral video, didn't subscribe, but then the algorithm showed me this one and I watched it, realized I forgot to subscribe, and did
The algorithm is a fickle thing, just "Oh he made a video about this, and a lot of people watched it, if he makes another video about the same topic, people are more likely to watch it than if it's a video about some other unrelated topic," which leads to people feeling trapped by the first thing that got successful. It's just how it works, you're competing with others for attention in a simple numbers game. If you want togo beyond that, you have to be so unique that people want to go out of their way to search your name. In the search feature that barely works
That's just how this platform is.
it's not that much of a surprise that someone's short shitpost pulls more numbers than their series or video essay. It's much easier for friends to share, put the video on their phone when out, or stick it on someone's tv quickly when they want to show it to them. "Do you want to see a funny cat video" is always going to be better received than "would you like to see this great 45 minute essay on aqueducts i saw it's very funny" during regular day to day interactions, as it's so much less of a time infringement, and so by pure viral metrics it's just bound to do better
also re: your video it probably did help a lot that ludwig talked about on stream. Which ironically was the advantage you were trying to not rely on.
plankton farts and dies
Lets get you 2M on this as well
feeding this one to the algorithm
3:18 omg this situation is way too familiar :(
I made some random low effort edits of something a few years ago and somehow both of them are the most popular videos on my channel, and I haven't been able to make anything that has been able to catch up to them in terms of statistics since
The reasons in my opinion that makes that "why i made this channel" video the most viewed one on your channel are quite simple:
-very interesting video idea
-good title
-really nice and simple to understand thumbnail
-and most importantly its actually a good video with good pacing, editing etc which made people stick around till the end
