    Gordon Pinsent has just passed away at the age of 92, he was a wonderful actor, These fine Canadian movies from this era used to be broadcast on tv regularly at the time and it's sad that it's all gone now.

    A real walk down memory lane. Some shocking to know that my mom took my brother and I to see this when I was 10 years old and living in North Bay, ON. She was born and raised in St. Lawrence and her brother in law used to work in the mill where some of the filming took place. She must have thought it'd be a wholesome story about a good old Newfoundland lad. I remember her muttering her shock at the language used as we walked home that evening from the theatre. God rest Gordon's soul, he was a gift to Canada.

      I can explain your homesickness for a place you've never been. The people of the Maritime provinces are of Irish decent. Long ago, when a lot of the Irish left Ireland for new frontiers, many settled in Newfoundland (where this film was set) and many others ventured through the Cumberland Gap, headed south, to settle in the Southern United States. The cultural foundations of both places are exactly the same. I'm a Canadian who lived in Tennessee for many years, and the similarity (in things like culture, personality, humour) is fascinating. :)

    My home town, although at the time--I would have been 9 years old--we were living elsewhere. I've stomped over many of the same places through the area.
    When Will traveled to St. John's to visit Stan (Will Geer), the hospital is actually the one I was born in, in Corner Brook.
    In the last scene, as Will is talking to himself about killing Roy, the scene starts out on the other side of the Humber river mouth, where no one lives, and about a 4 mile walk to the middle of town.
    In many walking scenes throughout, shots were taken at spots covering a large area, which would have involved at least several miles of hiking. Old familiar places far apart were presented as being right next to each other.
    I had seen a small part of the movie on TV back in '75. This is the first time seeing it in full. Thanks for the upload! A nostalgia-inducing trip back in time.

    I have this on an Australian VHS release that came out in late 1984. Watched it not that long ago actually. It's dated, but is a pretty good film! Interesting time capsule of an era. Strange Canadian accents that I presume are rural, never heard before and very unfamiliar to me. Some stunning scenery in parts of the film and so very different to my dry, mostly desert country.

    • @musicpaulweber
      @musicpaulweber 4 года назад

      That's a regional accent from Newfoundland. Not sure if still representative or not.

    • @patriciakeats1621
      @patriciakeats1621 3 года назад

      The girl, Ruth doesn’t have a real accent, probably cause she is either not from Newfoundland, or she is “acting”...the main fella’s accent is real, but a lot of the other people sound scripted and the natural rhythm is off. The accent overall is “off” to me.
