I’m thrilled to find this movie again. Saw it years ago when I was going through my own employment trials. The screenplay and performances perfectly capture the struggle for dignity and self respect. And I can relate to the cold northern winter!

A timeless story, about the trials and tribulations of a new Canadian and his family, sensitively and sensibly told.
Robert Shaw and Mary Ure are first-rate as the title character and his wife. The supporting roles are well written and well acted, too.
A priceless time capsule of Montreal in 1964, the on-location shooting captures the "ugly beauty" of a Montreal winter, one which I've luckily never experienced !!!
Directed by a young Irvin Kershner, who would go on to direct the most critically acclaimed Star Wars episode, "The Empire Strikes Back".
It also illustrates this cardinal rule: Don't turn down a job offer because you are expecting a better one !!!

I was up till 4AM this morning reading the book and was thrilled to see you uploaded the movie. Very well done. Shaw and Ure are great. Brian Moore's screenplay was slightly tamer and more open ended than his novel. Such pity his work is mostly out of print. Thanks. I loved the movie and '60s Montreal.

Love this film so much ❤️ big fan of Robert Shaw and his work. Mary Ure is fantastic too. I wish the original soundtrack would be available on cd.

Robert Shaw said this was his favourite role. He wasnt Irish. He was a Lancashire lad who grew up partly in Scotland and Cornwall and Mary Ure was a Scot. Shaw lived for years in Ireland hence the confusion.

Shaw and Ure's performances are just great...a sadly overlooked movie. As a Montrealer I thought the location shots were well done...Directed by the same guy who directed the second film in the star wars saga, the empire strikes back.

This is a great piece of Canadiana. Tx for the upload. So, so different from how Montreal is now. Did anyone notice the standard portrait of the Queen hanging on the wall in the workplace? Not now, me thinks.

Grew up in Montreal, so lots of memories, then moved to Chelsea QC, just down the road from Crawley Films. I recommend the book "Getting Started" by William Weintraub (passed away Nov 6, 2017) for a great snapshot of Richler, Gallant, Moore and him getting started as writers.

I've had my taste of unemployment over four decades of industrial work, and I agonized for Coffey when I saw this for the
first time thirty years ago. This viewing was just as depressing, hooray for Shaw, & Ure, the best.

Nice to see this movie after so many years. Shows what a hard assed country Canada was back in the day. Interesting to see a few Canadian actors who's names I don't know but faces I do. I think I spotted Chuck Shamata as an extra sitting in court..

Robert Shaw was an Englishman by birth, but his best known roles were playing Irish characters, like Coffey and Quint, so many
people think he was an Irishman. He did, however, move to Ireland and live there in his later years.

    It's really a nice movie.Filmed in a Beautiful City.
Mary Ure and Robert Shaw were both Irish, also.
Sadly, she passed away very young and so did Robert Shaw.
I wonder whatever happened to Libby McClintock, a local Canadian girl who played Paulie?
BTW the Reed Organization is an American Production Company; Crowley is Canadian, and the Majority of the Production was American. Irvin Kirshner was the director.

Yes, and must read the novel. In fact, must get to read more of Mordecai's (sp) works. Have just finished a "binge" of reading "Best of" Alice Monroe. OMG -- where has she been all my life? Highly, highly recommended. Makes me proud to be Canadian -- an ex-pat from UK. I watched "Away From Her" movie when it first came out, then just recently read the short story (not so short) AKA "Bear Came Over the Mountain", Oh, so excellent, so now just itching to re-watch movie but can't find it on RUclips, and Pirate Bay is down, of course. Must say, WHEN Canadians do it, they do it well.
