I started oiling my boots years ago. It basically makes them waterproof baring standing in a puddle for to long that is. The one negative I noticed is that if you get to crazy with the oil it will soak all the way through and get into your socks which will end up in your laundry and maybe have your wife asking why her socks now smell like Mobil 1 😀.
People are balking at the motor oil thing, but guess what? It actually works fairly well. A few years back I accidentally spilled an entire 5 gallon pail of Chevron THF-1000 hydraulic oil while refilling the tank on a tractor. The container hit the ground and broke, the lid flew off, and I basically coated myself in the stuff from the knee down. Jeans, socks, and a brand new pair of Justin roper boots. Thought I had ruined them, but once I wiped off the excess they took on a neat sheen and actually became about 90% waterproof, despite not being a waterproof boot. Now, is hydraulic oil, motor oil, etc an ideal boot care solution? Of course not...but if you work around heavy equipment, fuel, grease and oil all day anyway, a coat of oil isn't going to hurt anything, and adds some water repellency while blending out other stains.
I use to work at a scrap yard smashing cars and cutting up stuff , I learned if u mix oil, antifreeze, diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid and then dip your boots in that mixture for about 5 to 10 minutes and then let them dry for an hour in direct sun light they will become 100% waterproof , did that with my matterhorn steel toe metatarsal boots
@@nicholashosslogan3444 that's actually really cool. I work around all of those fluids every day, but rarely at the same time. I just got a new pair of Ariat Workhog XT's that I'm still breaking in, but they are already supposed to be waterproof. I guess we'll see...if they aren't, I might need to whip up a batch of that mixture and give it a go.
@@AllThingsMech the wife and I just got new ariat work hog vent teks and even though those come waterproof I also buy that waterproofing spray from Walmart and do 3 coats on each boots just to make sure, I only use that other mixture for my 8 inch and higher lace ups and non vent tek boots . You can purchase Mink oil at most boot shops that gives the same weatherproofing as the motor oil and Mink oil is cheaper and as long as you keep the lid on the can of Mink oil so that it doesn't dry out ... it will last for 5 years or more. The motor oil has a odor and will eventually break down the leather of the boots. Motor oil ( or automotive engine oil) is made for automotive engines... not leather boots! I do agree that the engine oil works in a pinch for weatherproofing... but if you go deer hunting in boots that have been treated with automotive engine oil... the odor will be picked up by the deer! I say to use products that are made to soften and preserve leather ... no automotive engine oil, but people will do ... what they will do... because they saw it on RUclips! ( Also, I live in a small town in Texas... that most people here in Texas... just call it " Angelo " ... you call Google it to find out the full name of the town ... a population of a little over 90,000!)
Yep. Motor oil. Think of vaseline/petroleum jelly to keep your skin soft or on your lips from chapping during the winter. All made from good ole petroleum crude right out of the ground.
Hello Angelo! I was just thinking about you earlier today. I was cleaning my adidas sneakers but on the end shine was missing 🙄 It's great to have you here and learn from you😊😉. Nice video, again👍

Never thought of using motor oil on leather boots or leather shoes before, all i use was rendering moose or beaver fat to make some oil and mixed with bees waxe and use that on my mukluks before but only once and there were awesome and they were waterproof for a quite a while.
when my old bro still joined to oil company offshore some years ago, he also lubricated his boots with oil. he said it for endurance for the leather and since working offshore there were no dust, its ok according to him.
As a kid, I remember shoe shine stands in all the hotels, on the streets in the business and shopping districts and they always had customers. But that was 50 years ago and now people wear synthetic shoes, very little leather and they just throw them away when they need new heels and soles. I would like to see the data comparing shoe polish sales today compared to 1960.
Awesome Job! … Enjoyed the vid … Question: what was in the bottle around the beginning as you were brushing to clean the leather … couldn’t tell or see the label as you held it up?

I must say, Angelo, those boots look mighty fine! Do you only use synthetic motor oil in place of leather conditioner, or will regular oil work? Something new every day! Great job.
Hello Steve! Back home we couldn't afford any leather conditioners so we used motor oil to take care of our leather boots. Any oil will work, we even used burnt oil before. Thanks!
I have a question. I am an equestrian, show jumper rider. We use very expensive bridles, saddles and boots. I was taught at a very young age from the best trainers with cavalry background. Anyway, I was taught to use no excessive water, certainly no suds. Lol. Wipe off tack with slightly damp rag, rub glycerin in to clean and then condition. What do you think of that?
What did you put in the lid with the saddle soap? It was water and I could not make out the other product that you showed us the label. That is some expensive motor oil, I think I would have used some conventional Super Tech oil at 1/4 the price of that Mobil 1. He'll get at least 7,500 miles without an oil change and that is a lot of walking in those boots! I bet they do a good job of repelling water. Good work!
Jace, also, grass and yard work really wears and tears shoes up a lot and fast. If people would only take care of their feet more than there shoes. I’m amazed how the art of selling shoes for proper fit and size is virtually none existent. Your feet are the most important part of your body to protect. Once they go, the rest of your body goes real fast too. Take care of the feet, that take care of you.
I have never used motor oil on my boots on purpose, but it winds up on them from working on cars and working in a factory. I never had any problems with my boots from it.
Hello, thanks for sharing this video. Could you please list the exact products that you are using? Which saddle soap is that and what exactly is the name of the stuff in the bottle with the green label? Also it would be great to know, which brushes you are using. Thank you and best regards from Munich.
you shouldn't use food grade oils, they can contain nutrients that attract unwanted growths like mold. I used to put citrus oil on drain snake cables because it helped with the smell and it would also lubricate everything and protect the cable... or so I thought, I actually ruined all of the cables from the massive amounts of rust that it attracted WD-40 was the better option from the start.
Well that’s something I have not heard of before...I thought maybe he has boot oil in that can of motor oil? No? All righty then. I guess these boots are now protected against viscosity breakdown!

You guys seriously understand ASMR at its core. If I were to have a definition of ASMR, you and Dimitris channel would be in the examples.
the cool thing is that it works both ways, leather conditioner is actually an alternative to motor oil for cars. tried it myself.
So, you have a new engine yet?
I like how the good boots are sewn with the tongue up the eyelets so if you step in 3"water, your feet and socks don't get wet!
Called a gusseted tongue
But in the summer in Texas , your feet sweat like HELL !!! No shit, you actually feel like you are floating and sliding around in your boots !
My grandad used to use motor oil too! Sometimes even used and the funny thing is his boots lasted ages!
The shoe tapping is soooo calming!!

My shop boots are constantly getting a new coating of oil and grease and they've lasted for years.
Mine look awful and stink like 6k mile old oil 😂. But I’m a very new mechanic so maybe the oil will help them last longer.
At what point should I switch to the “High Mileage” blend? 😂
