- We couldn't resist flying on the beach during our trip to California. But, what kind of upkeep should you do flying around all that salt and sand?

Flite test is part of my daily routine. I rewatch videos everyday!
Peter is a great addition to the team. As Josh was noting, "doesn't take much time" to rinse with water also applies to the corrosion issue because folks can do something for the aircraft at the field before the trip home for a detailed clean up. Rust never sleeps, sometimes it's shockingly fast too!
Hey guys of FliteTest, you guys are the reason I got into the hobby of RC airplanes. And I just wanted to let you know I really like your videos and I hope you keep it up :)
peters skill has improved so much
Another great tips video! Thanks guys!
I know I've asked before but... I'd love for you to do a video on how to travel via airline with RC gear. How to pack your stuff, what's allowed as carry-on vs. checked baggage, etc.
Thanks again! Love what you do!
great episode!
Great video again fellas. I'm going to use this info to prep my Parkzone SU29 MM for the lakes here in Southern Illinois. Excellent content as always!
This is a great video!
Awesome guys!! Great work ;)
Excellent video. Very informative. The mod Peter did on the Tidewater, did he just use the FT cruiser twin engine pod and close the hole at the top of Tidewater? I would like to do the same to my TideWater too. Thx
This looks like China Beach in Sa Fracisco. I used to play there as a kid, great memories of the area. Its in the Seacliffe section of the Richmond Distric. Robin Williams used to live right above it.
I actually did this a couple weeks ago, but with my icon a5 (not the ultra micro). It's pretty fun even on windy days
Peter you're the man!!
The tidewater mid is way kool.
Do you have a video on how you did it please?
Great info guyz
Super duper way kool men
Come fly at SEFSD here in San Diego!!!
Any details you can share about the plane mod would be great. thx
ever try sea foam, or corrosion block?
hey what do you think about the 3DR solo drone
How about a video on different ways to film a rc flight? whats the results like if you strap a camera on your head vs a buddy hand holding a camera vs tripod etc?
Interesting video - I haven't flown powered aircraft near sand or at the beach, only sailplanes. It is good to watch you'all in action on location - what would you do on this case is helpful.
One suggestion. Peter is the best. Please add subtitles for when he speaks because he talks so fast! I think this would be funny as well as helpful.
Peter Gregory He talks fast and doesn't have the best enunciation. Direct sound recording in the noisy environment didn't help, either. Post-production guys could have caught this and subtitled the episode. Then again, if they didn't make out what he was saying, how would they put subtitles? :-)
corisco tupi I usually end up rewinding the video and listen again. He just talks fast, but Peter is the best thing to happen to Flite Test in a long time.
Here in Chile we don't have normal sand. We have iron based sand, which is pretty nasty stuff. While I hadn't seen the distilled water trick previously, I seriously doubt that it will displace the sand that's sticking to the magnets.
Any ideas on how to resolve that problem?
Peter Your Ripetide is a geat idea! Have 2 tide's, i'm pretty certain there gonne be twin versions.LOL.
Programmed them with flaperons, not the best under normal flight, but very stable during a serious decent, can be switched On/Off.Thx guy's. Have Major FUN!
my dad has a revenger volante powerboat and I want to flim it using a gopro what type of aircraft is best?
You guys should review the hobbyking skymule
Hey, hey. Peter is wearing FT-wear! I wondered when that would happen.
Josh Scott is back!
Could you do an episode of how taking motors apart? I usually can't do that without destroying these tiny little metal clips.
What were they doing in california?
Can you do a review of the Quanum fpv v2
I use 3 in one oil , what do you think is it sufficient?
Thank you! ;P
I miss the old style FliteTest videos with 30 seconds introductions, Chad Kapper (where is he?), and David.
Cool plane
Dang it, I would have road my bike to Muir Beach to see you guys!, couldn't get to east bay.
Please make a vid or send me a link for making my tide water a twin prop please.
Yay Josh and Josh!
What plane is it i want to buy this one can u give me a link
you guys should hold a bay area meet!
I do a lot of [multirotor] flying in the sand, I dont live near the beach :( but I do aerial photography at farms and usually the only clearing I can find to work from is sand / gravel... My most useful piece of ground equipment when it comes to dealing with the sand is a small 2.5gal "pancake" style air compressor, picked it up at harborfreight for >$40 and power it from the same small generator I carry around for running my chargers. 80PSI of air is no match for the grit in the motors, usually I only need a few second blast to totally clear it out, not that it matters to my multi's but it's also safe for all my foam board FT design planes too, unlike rinsing with water which would destroy foam board.
nice!!
Hi i am french and i like yoir vidéo i wil making m'y firts drone and you are m'y inspiration source
what is everyone's favorite plane/quadcopter
Hey Josh, I am new at flying FPV and was wondering if you had any old fatsharks or other goggles that I could buy. keep it up with the great videos.
I notice how much Josh Scott personality has changed in the more recent videos. He seems a lot more happier. :)
I officialy challenge you guys to make a radio fly!
what happened to josh number 2? he wasn't in many of the episodes
once flew on the beach. Motor was never the same after.. :p sandy bearings but worked fine though. I find the magnets will hold a bit of sand sometimes also..cant removed with water. maybe pressurezed air.
Peter: VOCALIZE!! what is the oil called again?
What happened to Bixlers arm?
we need more combat :-)
Totally.
Please do a review on edf jets...
One model i recommend is t-50 golden/black eagle.
It is a korean fighter/trainer that is made by unique models. Hobbyking sells one too...
It is cheap yet powerful and it has so many characteristics you guys wanna check out
Please do one for me
This episode is so salty.
GlitchyFPV ha ha ha FUNNY JOKE
You guys produce great videos BUT THE MUSIC IS TOO LOUD!! Thanks for the video's please just turn down the music it makes it hard to hear what you guys are saying without turning it up extremely loud.
0:20 Dat filming position
If I want to buy a transmitter which one would be the best for a beginner?
Meeeeeaaaaaaxxxxx the orange thing from hobbyking is cheap and does the job !
Meeeeeaaaaaaxxxxx or a DX-6i or if you want a little better one the DX-6
Third... Great informative episode FT :)))))))))
Why are the episodes so short now? They used to be 8-10 minutes on average
Like Equinox said WD40 is actually an oil. So it would be beneficial to spray down the electronics with it as it would displace the water. I would suggest rinsing with fresh water then spraying down with WD40. Awesome plane by the way.
Try making a quadcopter out of a paper plate!
I know it has been stated, but Peter misspoke on the wd 40, he needs to do some research on that product, it is a petroleum base product??
what are they talking about saying wd-40 causes rust??? displacing water is perfect for preventing corrosion. water is the electrolyte required for corrosion to occur, so when wd-40 displaces it that is good. i dont get it, i think there mistaken. i used wd-40 in the navy to do corrosion control and protection on board my ship, we spray it on the rust than scrub it with a wire brush to break up the filliform and exfoliation rust till its down to clean metal and than paint to protect the now clean bare metal.
+jason stout exactly, you used a 2 part method, WD-40 to clean and remove, then paint to protect. WD-40 does not protect, not long term nor delicate little bearings and shafts like in R/C engines or firearms. if you dunk something in the muck, WD-40 is great for hosing out but then must be replaced with something that will protect longer term, like corrosion X for electronics or CLP for your firearm. Its just easier to use corrosion X or CLP in the first place. So don't use WD-40.
Exactly. WD 40 is the best. They don't know it yet.
Read about Corrosion X......The best. .............Best thing to do is not fly on salt water.
is that peter guy have own youtube channel? i will subscribe to him
I HAS A CHALLENGE FOR YOU FLITE TEST! MAKE A DOUBLE NAZE BOARD 12 MOTOR MACHINE!
"It's cold here in California" No, it's cold in San Fran. Remember what Mark Twain said; "The coldest Winter I ever lived through, was a Summer in San Francisco"!
i wawnt to see more Vtols becuse you cant get easely plans for it :-(
What happen to josh right hand? All bandage
Is that Justing Timberlake?
I have a question. Recently I purchased a quadcopter that takes a 500 mah lipo battery. My question is... Can I use a 600 mah lipo battery with it?
And by cell count do you mean the 3.7 volt thing? Sorry im new with this hobby
Kevin Hanes On the original battery it says +3.7v 500mAh, on the batteries that were bundled with this package i ordered from amazon it says 3.7v 600 mAh
PopsGaming yeah that will be totally fine. mAh is just basically talking about how long the battery will last, it may be slightly heavier/bigger but as long as the voltage is the same it will be fine. what gets dangerous is using a bigger cell count/voltage battery on that, it may cause the esc to blow.
okay thank you
Zone Fly...lolz!
If it is dry sand you can generally just blow it out of the motor with your mouth.
Wyll Surf Air No, not really. Using the distilled water or disassembly technique is far more effective. In fact, trying to blow the sand out can just push it deeper into the motor and it will wreak havoc on your windings. Highly recommend a more thorough cleaning process.
STILL WAITING FOR FT CRUISER ON FLOATS.
+THUMBS UP so they can see!
I got an idea for a capture the flag style game. So the idea is there will be 4 players, and 10 or so balloons with very little water or flower to give it some weight, they will be lined up in a row. Each player will have a hook on the bottom of their airplane, the balloons will have a very light ring at the top of it. Using FPV with a set timer each player will have to retrieve as many balloons as possible and drop them in their corner.
This would be Very fun to watch, I'm sure their will be a lot of crashing going on to get a balloon.
The hook and drop mechanism should be very easy to figure out, I'm sure Peter can do it (:
How much $ dollars is the corrosion x company paying peter to come out and bash WD 40? Come on guys, ya are better than that
TIM WILSON He's not bashing it, he's clarifying what it isn't good for. WD-40 isn't good as a protectant. It's great for a short term lubricant, or to help break up the corrosion on a stuck bolt/nut.
Haystack Hall I have been using wd 40 for 30 plus years, Good stuff especially for rust or to prevent rust , a must on my Boat for all items that have rust or that may rust, works great short term and LOONNGG TERM so for Peter to say it causes rust is about as idiotic as I have heard, especially when the product has been proven to work by consumers for 50 plus years. it just caught me by surprise with these Guys to let that go on video, they have always been pretty much spot on with issues like this,, they dropped the ball on that one...shame on them
TIM WILSON WD is great, just don't use it on anything that's suppose to be greased. Also, it cleans rust, but it does not prevent it.
Tim, you have mentioned Peter's comment MULTIPLE TIMES.....you seem to be very passionate about WD40.....are you getting a kickback from them? 😜
TIM WILSON It can be used as a protectant, but you have to re-apply it a lot, I used to use it for bike chains, and they still rusted. It's not an end-all solution.
physicaly
What did Josh Bixler do to his right hand? I must of missed something.
Yeah, noticed the cast too.
I thought wd40 stood for water dispersion. Is that wrong? I have noticed that it is not good as a storage oil though.
Scot Caraway Water Displacement, 40th formula
Hey Flite Test, have you guys ever thought about making helicopters the same way you make your planes, say a helicopter with a tail rotor like a Blackhawk's or apache's?
this plane can landing on the water ?
Satriya Handha yes
Apperently.
Satriya Handha Yes. They designed the bottom of the plane body to perform like a boat. The pods on the wings are floats to keep the wings out of the water. Several types of models are water-planes.
damn
You're lucky you didn't get hijacked.
A few days ago the local tv station,KTVU,sent a film crew down to the pier to report on a murder and they got beat up and they stole their camera!!!
Good to see Josh Scott back on!
Point Richmond 37.910339, -122.388306 ....... I will meet you guys there. I have a Ritewing zephyr 2 I've flown once a year ago and have been scared crapless to fly again because of the size and weight dispite many simulator hours, but I am sure you guys can bring the courage out in me lol
The sand on the motor tip is wrong. He says dont spin them. Most people who get sand in their motor will be operating the plane at that time and the motors will be spinning. Its unlikely that anyone will just dump sand on the motor like he did. That would be pointless
Lesson learnt don't take my aircraft to the seaside
Bad info on WD 40! Yes it displaces water, no it does not cause or accelerate corrosion, it actually helps protect against corrosion, bad Flitetest, bad. I would not use it as a lubricant though.
That looks like the most UNINVITING place to fly.
... sounds like to much work... ;-)
Yea, Peter do some research Buddy, Wd 40 makes parts rust? Bad info, Wd 40 is what I use, distilled water? Come on guys, I mean Josh is like what? Ya can do better than that...lol
OMG JOSH I BACK!
4th
bring back David Windestal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These short videos are getting old. We need new designs and reviews. In depth videos and challenges
so that happened to Josh B.? a spill of wd40 over his hand?? :P
Yeah the WD40 comments are flat wrong. Look it up WD40 repels water and will prevent rust.
under 301 club :)
when are you guys going to get rid off that back ground music, is so annoying. Is OK for the vid presentation, but no while you talking.
111st
301+ club! Anyone else?
First
***** no one cares.
I care
tomas mairhofer why do you care that someone was first it's just annoying don't be one of them.
He's trying to annoy yo bro
You*
Peter,
Talk a little more slowly and enunciate your words, I have trouble keeping up with what you're saying.
