    You guys are so much fun to watch. I just bought one of these at the Kitchener Waterloo Flying Dutchman 50th anniversary show this weekend. After watching this I am sure I made the right choice..... I really appreciate the clean intelligent content that you've always put up. Please don't change and keep up the great work. Thanks so much!

    I want to give a report on the S+. I was very skeptical about this plane being a beginner trainer. My son wanted to get into flight so bad, but the FT Beginners we were using kept getting nosed into the ground. So for Christmas we got him this S+ after seeing this episode. So my son and I went out to test it and make sure everything was calibrated right. I was so impressed at the characteristics of it and how well it handled in all modes. Matter of fact, I was so impressed that for his second flight, I took my fourstar out so I could fly with him. I put a video on RUclips on both the test flight and my sons second flight. This aircraft has taken him leaps and bounds in his confidence of flight. If anyone is interested on those vidoes the Channel is Gilbert Maxwell. I am not a videographer by any means. Thank you Flitetest for helping make the flying experience easy and very affordable. Anyone reading this comment that wants to start out, FT Nutball and FT Baby Blender are great to start with. The Baby Blender is so dosile yet manuverable. It can be dialed down for a good fisrt 4 channel flight. It is still my favorite flyer.

    I've seen a TON of flight tests on RC aircraft. Most you could easily tell they were done poorly by amateurs. This was by far the BEST one I've seen yet. LOVED the FPV! Makes me want to go out & buy the Sportsman S+ right now. Great job guys.

      NOTE: I would LOVE to see Hobby Zone come out with a Float Kit for this aircraft & be able to keep all of the flight characteristics! Being able to auto land on water!

    Do you think it was landing hard because you were hand launching from over your head? It may take that elevation as ground level. It was flying well until the last 5' or so. Might be that the GPS thinks the aircraft should be on the ground already below where you launched it from.

    • @nicholasblock9007
      @nicholasblock9007 9 лет назад +7

      That's a really good point, I wonder if the landing elevation is where you spool up the motor or where it actually starts tracking GPS ground speed.

    • @RCmies
      @RCmies 9 лет назад +5

      Casey Diers Good point. I think it's supposed to take off from ground anyways. It's a beautiful plane meant for scale flight. So taking off from the ground it's going to know where the runway is.

    • @williamadventures
      @williamadventures 9 лет назад +1

      Casey Diers Nah. We had the same problem with auto landing. this plane needs more speed or it drops. Needs some nose down and a flare. while the autoland does pretty good, it would have been better on a apprentice plane with bigger landing gear and wings. the nose gear on this thing is pretty flimsy. I flew the original glassair and not my first choice as a trainer.

    • @wildblue2u
      @wildblue2u 8 лет назад

      +Casey Diers . I thought the same thing. The instruction state that the geographic location is saved when the throttle is advanced past 90%, and given at least 4 sat geomtry elevation would be noted.

  • @aarons7836
    @aarons7836 9 лет назад +19

    Guys don't get too upset with the auto landing! the reason it landed that way is because the plane was hand launched

    • @TrashMutt
      @TrashMutt 6 лет назад +2

      Mark Thomas probably not but that's why it cut throttle 5 feet up because that's where it took off from so the system thought the ground was at peters head height 😂

    Taught myself to fly with gen 1 with this plane, by myself. Fantastic trainer. Landing gear is a little flimsy but have lost count of the number of times I've bent it back to shape and still serviceable. Since moved on to other aircraft but still love this little plane, has real presents in the air and is very scale like. ATB Jez

    Bought this about a week ago to teach the other half how to fly. Wow, she was flying it no problem first go. The auto land is really good, just need to give it a little up elevator just as it's about to touch down. Re calibration, I put it in cal mode then took the wing off, makes life ALOT easier. One of the hardest things is putting confidence in it to iron out the problems and landing etc....some times it goes against all what you've learned, but it's been faultless and 100% reliable. The 3 flight modes are great, expert mode gives you some quite good acro ability. Cannot recommend it enough as a beginner or just a hassle free relaxing flyer. Go for the RTF over the BNF as some of the of the options/modes etc don't work or aren't available when using some other radio's, for example you can't use intermediate mode if using the DX6i. For the sake of about an extra £20 ($30) you get the DX4 preprogrammed, clutter free and everything works. Dean. Wales, UK.

    I remember my first time flying. After a month or two on a simulator, I finally went out with my dad (He never took the controls, nor will he ever) to fly with my Multiplex Funman trainer. I was flying with only rudder, elevator, and throttle, without ailerons. I took off and flew quite fine, but landing was something I could not do at the age of 9. Now I can land, that I am older.

    Nice video and you all had a great time. BUT, I wish you would have gone through all the abilities the New Sportsman S+ has. Setting up the GPS and using Both Virtual fence ( VF ) in both Park Mode and Airfield Mode and showing how they were different and how the plane reacted to each.
    Plus you showed how the plane took control and flew itself trying to go into the Holding pattern after hitting the Virtual fence, but you guys did not allow it to do it's thing completely you kept taking back control .
    Otherwise a nice video, just wish you would have gone through the planes functions more.

    I have been flying helicopters & quads for a year now and am working on my inverted flight at the moment (yeah I have an Invertix 400 and a Nano 3D, so inverted with quads too). I have always been scared of flying planes because I fear I wont have as much contol over them as I would with my other kit. The spaces I fly are rather confined. This is a pretty cool piece of kit and might push me towards buying a plane...how tight can the geo box be?

    I like the video. I just think trainers are too much drone. I just got my first plane it's a rc fockewolfe from easy sky it's a micro warbird. it's not too bad it only has a 3xs gyro but otherwise it's you. in my opinion the best way to learn is to make mistakes and I've made plenty. I've Glenn close to 10 times and now I can do barrel rolls just from learning without anyone helping. really cool feathers but it may be crossing the line.good video keep it up flite test

    RTM- read the manual. Although this says for the beginner, I have a feeling there is too much for a real casual beginner to figure out to actually do well on their own. Setting up geo-fencing - really? Getting through the manual and having confidence that you are doing things right, maybe with the Horizon Hobbies video ( I haven't watched it.)
    For a determined beginner? Yes. But a real determined beginner could fly the FT Simple Trainer, too. Or, something even more challenging. So, I think this plane is like a Guillows balsa model. It looks small, but the challenge is that it is small. It isn't a beginner's model. It takes experience to build something that small and have it fly. I was thinking that this plane will be bought by tons of experienced flyers figuring out whether it is really a beginner's model, not bought by the beginners themselves : ) Bunches of experienced RC guys on Sat a.m. at clubs around the world arguing its merits and detriments.

      Peter Gregory Not at all over on RC groups an absolute beginner who has never flown is now enjoying this Plane....and doing it on their own......This is for an absolute beginner, the only real need is a larger area to do it in.

    • @Stephen30853
      @Stephen30853 9 лет назад

      I believe the guy on the Horizon video said that the settings take effect as soon as 90% or more throttle is used. Also it can be set for a park area where it will fly around you or an airfield where it will fly a rectangular pattern and come back to the runway that it took off from. During setup the wings are placed parallel to the runway so it knows which way the runway faces. For someone who is learning they should rehearse the various steps of setup until they are familiar with it. Perhaps with a small model so they can practice inside before going to the field. I plan on flying the HobbyZone Sport Cub S and using that as a trainer first and then moving up to this plane. Considering how much I paid for a Parrot AR Drone 2 some time ago, the price for this plane and what it can do still makes it a bargain for the price which is a lot higher here in Australia. Someone mentioned that the nose wheel isn't very strong. That is the case for most tricycle undercarriage, even for full size aircraft. Great review guys. Keep them coming.

I want enough wing that it will fly slow and mild not just fast with a bad ass computer. Is the Champ S+ too small? How about the UMX Waco? I like the small size but fear that will translate to high stall speeds as well.

    What would you guys recommend this or the E-Flite S 15 e for a first plane for someone?

      +Chuck I have the E-flite and is way more fun then this i would say, whats the point of a auto pilot plane ?? maybe if you are really beginner but you see the point, rather take the risk crashing it then the plane flying itself. I had it for long now and i think it took like 5 big crashes, one of them flying full speed in a tree. So maybe flown like 80+ batteries with it now, you should consider it!

      I also have the Apprentice, and I think I would shy away from something that's so automated you don't need to be there. The Apprentice in beginner mode is super easy to land. Get it pointed in the right direction, and adjust throttle for your glide, just like you learned, and it's painless. Moreover, you're always in control, if only as much as a beginner should be. Once you learn the basic feel of it, you can switch out of beginner mode and try it. That's how you're going to learn anyway, not just holding a panic button for 3 seconds and hoping the computer does it right.
      The only difference here is that the Apprentice doesn't geo-fence, and has no compass, so fully automated flight it cannot do. But that's the point of learning. I'm self taught with the Apprentice - no buddy box, no instructor (other than the two Josh's at FliteTest), and I LOVE what *I* can do with the airplane. And if I get in trouble, it saves me, but I don't have a leash any more than I need to have.
      Apprentice has better wheels for the hits it'll take too, and it's $100 less! You'll only use the GPS until you get used to flying - about an hour of flight time. After that, it's an extra $100 wasted IMO.

      +Juno Mac RC You can choose between two Virtual Fence modes: Park which gives you a
      200 m radius around the pilot and Airfield with a 400 x 200 m flying
      perimeter and a no fly zone directly behind the pilot. You can also
      disable GPS. It's shown in the manual on page 16: www.horizonhobby.com/pdf/HBZ8400-Manual_EN.pdf
