THIS!!! THIS is the Flite Test I've been missing so much. Back to what made me love Flite Test in the first place. What a fun looking model! THANK YOU. Now, if we could just get you guys back on the "plans will always be free" train from back in the day...
I really liked the retro style intro. It reminded me of back when the other Josh was there. same thing with some of the corny tutor jokes. Plane looks really cool.
The kits are a bit pricey, but building the planes from scratch using free plans was not only a learning curve in itself, but having to do slight modifications because you built it yourself was also a great learning experience. Hopefully we see plans for this someday in the future, the free plans got me into flying!! This plane looks sweet, i love how versatile it is!
I get why they stoped giving away all the plans. Im bummed they havent figured out a way i could pay for just the plans yet. Not some limited onetime release of whichever select planes they happen to feature. Paid individual downloads or a different tier of subscription service or something. Building from plans has value to me, i for one would pay for it. Im sure the'll work it out. This plane looks awesome
@@ulaB Yeah I’ve listened to a couple lately and I’m a paying member. They send you the featured plan each month, you do not gain access to any additional plans. You don’t even get access to featured plans from before you joined, even if you ask. I’m still happy to be a member I still buy stuff from FT I just hope one day to buy plans from them too.
Really nice to see you rediscovering your roots. This plane will most likely end up being one of my new favorites. Peter's 'Bushwhacker' will always be my all time favorite. I certainly hope the build plans will be available for download.
As a fpv drone pilot, I've decided to dip my toes into the world of fixed wings. The tutor is going to be my first build and first bird! Going to paint it up in that classic yellow cubby livery. Beyond excited for better weather and building! Clear skies yall :)

Just found your channel and have binged everything. . so much so that within a week i bought the FT Tutor "getting started bundle" ... i never realized i would be able to make an RC airplane .. but it was as easy as can be thanks to your kits/vids! Cheers!
This is the first FT video I have watched in a while, and boy does this bring back nostalgia ! Love the throwback style, hope you keep it up in the future!
Just built this plane, flies beautifully. Can't wait to start modifying it. The lack of plans still bums me out but I dont want to be yet another guy beating that drum.
I think it would be really cool if you made one really big plane that has to survive the swarm. The swarm is a bunch of tiny r.c. Planes that have a sticky nose that sticks on the bigger airplane. If the bigger plane lasts for more than 10 minutes the big plane wins.
Fun one, appreciate all the efforts. you guys really go the extra mile. Now to hit your shop to support you guys.. . maybe I need a custom hatchet.... Thanks for sharing
@@Youdontwannaknow.. They will be in December for FTCA members. That's $1 / month. Also they've explained the situation in the podccast: www.flitetest.com/articles/podcast-episode-213-planes-plans-and-problems
@@Youdontwannaknow.. It's not for the money. It's to protect their intellectual property. You still have access to nearly 70 free plans, plus the ones released by community members on the forum which would not exist without Flite Test and which hosting fees are payed for by Flite Test. Flite Test also is a strong advocate for the hobby, spending their time talking to politicians, so we can still fly at all. Oh and that besides all the other activities like the STEM program, community gatherings, etc. You pay five times as much for one servo, but you are not willing to pay a dollar for plans that you can reuse again and again?
What would be an interesting project would be to make an amphibious plane that was experimented with in the UK during the end of ww2. It had one large float that retracted so as to blend in with the fuselage. Two wingtip floats also retracted. The theory was to reduce the drag from the floats.

Great video Flite Test! Looks like a very cool plane! I was wondering how to get the 3d printer files for the bomb drop? Are they free or do you get them with the speed build kit?
I'm really excited about this plane. I've built and flown the Simple Cub until crashed beyond repair. I think this design is a few steps up on the Simple Cub. So, how does the model fly with flaperons?
Update... I've built a 5 channel, tail dragger Tutor. What I have with the flaps is a STOL Tutor. I'm amazed at how slow I can fly my STOL Tutor without it stalling. I built FT Storch style slats but can't see any reason other than curiosity for putting them on my plane. I did upgrade from my rescued Simple Cub 935kv motor to a FT 1050kv motor with a 0945 prop. Motor upgrade made a substantial improvement in flight performance. So, I'll be painting my STOL Tutor because she's a keeper. Plan on building a second Tutor this summer with the Turbo wing and "C" pack motor. Great design guys! 👍
We are FTStem subcribers and would LOVE to build this plane before the weather keeps us grounded. Please release the plans so we can get these things crashing ASAP. I see a streamer battle in our near future.
To _MY_ mind what would be ideal for a trainer (or "Tutor" ) aircraft would be one where you could shift from a high dihedral wing to a lower one without changing anything else. I sill definitely say that the FT Tutor does NOT have the typical dihydral angle that many trainers have.
You can build the wing with as much dihedral as you want. But I will say that the stock dihedral is fine. Just maiden-ed one yesterday with the 3-channel configuration and it flew great. My son had a hoot flying it. It has about the same dihedral as the old well-loved HH SuperCub trainer.
Hey guys. I'd really like to build this from scratch. I can't seem to find the free online plans. Will they be going up soon? Here in Australia, the freight & the wait is not practical to buy the speed build kit.
@FliteTest - so what is the BIGGEST you could possibly build this plane? Wit your biggest electric motor that you could find, and the biggest servos to throw the biggest control surfaces. And how big a wing can you make from single sheets? (or could you go even bigger with multiple sheets?) Just how big could you possibly go on this thing - and would it handle the same?
i would love to see everyone at flight test make a plain and the only rule is it has to be between suite sizes then but them all up in the air and fight to the death
Is this a better choice than the simple Cub. It's hard to learn without planes to learn on and I'm trying my best to make it happen. I need at least a couple trainers I would think. Hoping for the best option
You were laughing at the name. A single seat biplane was designed by a Mr Currie. He called it the Wat. There was a float version, the Wet Wat. There was the turboprop one, the Hot Wat and the unsuccessful bigger engined one, the Not Wat.

This wasn't even that long ago either.
