I have hundreds of vintage to send in from 1940 Play Ball to 49 to 69 plus my 70’s to ultra modern. Just finding the time like you said to review, send in and then decide which ones to sell. Just love the hobby like you Chris. Always appreciate everything you share
Congrats on your returns and thanks for sharing, Chris. Not a question, but a few comments - I've made multiple purchases via CIA and each experience has exceeded my expectations. Jeremy is awesome and is running a first-class operation. Each interaction with him has made me feel appreciated.
It would be nice if you could walk us through how you determine grades on vintage. I think that most of us who grade are familiar with assessing cards that are Mint or Gem Mint, but lower and mid-grades in particular are not something that many have experience with.
2 things stand out to me. Your eye for vintage is spot on and by your own words, you use the naked eye method. So does psa grade vintage with the naked eye also? And on modern they use 10x equipment which you i assume don't? Hence the lower modern grades you seem to get often. 2nd point is the hobby itself created the raw/psa 9 monster. The covid years of cracking and resubmitting every single psa 9 until it came back a 10 made them worthless since the hobby only wanted gem mint. No one to blame but flippers.
Question for the Q&A video. I like buying raw 90s inserts and sending them off to PSA for grading. I constantly see PSA under grading the cards. What are your thoughts on this? How accurate do you think they are? Do you think there’s any sort of bias going on? Also how much luck have you had with resubmitting?
I think I have graded those Ohtani BC RCs about 10x and its alot about centering given the border is so clearly defined. Both of yours are grossly OC top-bottom. But great vintage return! Congrats
Nice eye Chris..... seems to be a correlation between paying PSA higher fees and getting better grades.... perhaps~ not so much on modern..I recently sent cards in and checked the box for grade breakdown or thought I did....& got none of it.
Chris, I wonder if you would consider doing a webcast with your personal collection and a short story behind each card(how acquired, cost etc.). Love your stories
Question from a fellow CIA agent... if you had sent that Banks rookie with the mark in to SGC, what would you expect for the grade? Since SGC doesn't have qualifiers, would the near mint card have been knocked down to a 1 or 2 because of the mark? Thanks!
As a potential buyer, I would much prefer (and pay more for) them in SGC Holders. They just display so much better.... especially all of those mid-century cards. Thanks for the video.
I prefer SGC for speed and cost, but I actually prefer PSA for the look. I buy a lot of vintage Detroit Tigers and can't always pay for top grades. I don't need the SGC holder screaming out the grade in my display case. The black foam does make the card pop, but the font size on the grade is too big for me.
I always love your PSA order vids. Quick question though: While I understand PSA demands a premium for Modern and Ultra Modern, wouldn't it still make more sense to send vintage to SGC where wait time is going to be the same or faster, and at 20% the cost? I wasn't going to compare all cards, but the 56 Topps Mays went for roughly the same price in both slabs. Just curious on your thoughts. Cheers!
Love the content always! 2 questions 1. What's the most you have paid for a single card $$ value. 2.will you start using PSA to eBay to keep flipping inventory?
Chris; It would be a very interesting study for the channel if you could crack the Otto Graham card and send it back to PSA at the $250 level in order to see if it comes back with a higher grade. I’d bet the grading fee that it would come back higher!! PS- The newer cards, why not send them at the $27 level and, at worst, pay the up charge if they got 10’s??
Question for Q&A…I have a highly graded 1957 Topps baseball master set to sell (PSA 7 and 8, 30 Hofs PSA 6). I’m on the registry. Without breaking it into pieces and selling and shipping 400+ cards, what would you recommend that I do to sell it and make the highest return on its sale? Love your channel!!!
It's a good question. I would think taking the set to a large show. No fees, or shipping. Consign to a reputable auction house. The fees are probably worth all of the legwork you would save. With such an awesome set, it would surely get a premium with a big consignor.
Question for Q & A Video: How many buyers are actively participating in super expensive high roller auctions (e.g. $100K+ cards)? Are there a small group of known super-rich collectors picking these up? If so, who are they? Or is it usually dealers picking them up for resale to private/anonymous collectors? Any light you can shed on the "who's who" of elite collectors?
For the Q&A- can you explain why anyone would buy Topps Bunt Digital cards? I see them on eBay and just don't get it. Do these actually have collector value? Are digital autographs worth more than digital base cards? The whole concept doesn't make sense to me. If I wanted a digital card, couldn't I just take a screenshot of that listing? Thanks for all your great content!
Great cards. And your grader seemed to be mostly fair I think, imo, it would be nice to know however, how much of the ''eye appeal'' goes into their evaluation, and, decision making too.
I have wondered about that too....if I send a card in at a higher level will it grade higher, and the inverse....if I send a card in at a lower level (with the possibility of an up charge) will it grade lower? I think there is something to this theory.
Nope, why would PSA screw themselves out of being able to up charge you just because you sent it in at a lower service level? PSA wants that up charge, trust me.
The 2018 Bowman & Bowman Chrome stuff is really harshly graded by PSA for some reason. Centering seems to need to be 50/50/50/50 to earn a 10, and anything beyond imperfect centering gets you hammered.
gj chris , had a question. Any metrics out there to measure how much the industry generates as a whole? Trying to figure out retail pricing losses to gains.
Chris - Where are you finding raw vintage in even mid-grade with nice eye appeal, lol? I have been doing this a long time, and I can't find anything anymore. Everything vintage is either graded or if raw, it's low grade or nice but trimmed, etc. I have plenty of people I deal with, but no one wants to sell nice vintage in the raw unless something is wrong with it. It's frustrating! Just about the only time I come across something is on the rare occasion some old collector decides to sell and I am at the right place at the right time, but that is rare.
What do you think about the Card Dealer Pro software? I think the whole setup if you want to buy the scanner plus the card feeder is around 1000 bucks. What quantity of low end cards is worth it to buy this set up?
Hot take for possible Q&A - with collectors/investors who saw/remember the great vintage players (Aaron, Mays, etc) getting older and older, in a decade or so will vintage values peak or begin to decline? I saw this on another YT video and wanted to hear your thoughts.
Chris, you mentioned you collect baseball Hall of famers rookie cards and high grade as part of your PC. Can you tell us a little bit about your coverage and grades currently?
Is Shohei an investment risk? 2 elbow surgeries and now left shoulder surgery makes me wonder if longevity isn't in his future. Would his value drop if he never pitches again?
Great videos as always. Love them and the information you provide. A question, Do you feel that Whatnot is flooding the market with cards and hurting the hobby? And do you use it? I would love to see you do a prediction with TAG, where you get the answers you are looking for! They had changed since you last used them. Love to see an update. Thanks
Prob been asked before... But whats your biggest regret as far as sold something too soon, or too late? Or you passed on a purchase and later realized you missed out on a big profit
Berra and Graham to SGC and resubmit the Sanders? I think the vintage grader might have had lower grades on his mind-- seems like graders assume your submissions are all similar in grade expectations. You could resub the Otahni's with a bunch of 10's and bump up the grades?
PSA driving me crazy. Had a 83 topps Boggs that I had down as a 8/9 and came back a 4. My friend who collects as well looked over the card, and couldn’t figure it out. So cracked it and resent in and then got an 8??? Also got back some vintage baseball with OC qualifiers like 8 and 9 OC. They were well centered. Maybe 60/40 70/30 at worst. Does anyone know the threshold for the qualifier ??
Boggs 9s go for around 85. 8s are at 35. I think if I got a 4, Id crack out, sell and eat my loss. Or go TTM and get it signed. With grading and shipping costs your already in for like 60.
Yeah, that would have been wiser. Was more of curiosity thing, wanted to see, getting a 4 grade jump is insane, had specials both times. Was 16$ a card and part of bulk orders. So in for like 35$
Chris, as always thanks for the video. I have a question about the ‘55 Mantle Bowman: How is graded value $550? I see last 3 sales (in October) avg for $626.
@ I know that recent sales doesn’t always mean one can get same value. I’m not critiquing. You have a lot more experience and knowledge than me. Plus it is better to be conservative in valuations. I really like the vintage reveals you do. I recently graded some 54, 55, and 56. Keep up the content! We really appreciate it!!!
I think the grader should grade without knowledge of service level. Why does the grader need to know this? On a different topic, have you considered taking in cards, do your grading then submitting those which you think would be economical? For a fee of course. Thanks
QUESTION FOR YOUR upcoming "Q&A": Why does the current generation of LEAF Products (2015-2024) such as ITG (In The Game) not get the same Hobby love like Topps and Panini do? The Leaf ITG line is not fully licensed by the Major Sports Leagues but they are by their Player Associations. And they produce Super Gold Prismatic 1/1s that sell for at times not even a tenth of their Topps or Panini counterparts! What is your take?
No I'm not he clearly states that he feels he gets a better grade with a more expensive grading submit and you need to read my remarks again I'm not Willy nilly suggesting pull a number out of thin air I'm clearly stated that buyer and seller should agree on a price together. Next time before you comment please read and listen carefully to what your commenting on.!!!!
Goats and goat rookies always get graded a notch below their true condition the PSA way of population control. Sending in modern at $80 fee per grade is total suicide. Send the Otto over to SGC you probably do well. PSA has it all on computer makes you wonder how wary they are when you resubmit and they see the same rare vintage card from a previous submission.
If you would have spent $129 per card instead of $74.99, then you would have received grader notes that detail card defects and clarify the outcome. Only $54.01 more per card to have clarity and peace of mind about your card grade. Actually, I'm surprised that they're finally offering that service, but I guess they'll offer it if they can get an extra $54.01 per card for it.
Again love these videos Chris. But again thank for proving grading is nothing but a scam. I understand why people do it, don’t get me wrong. If this hobby says that a card at ps whatever sells higher than raw cards, wouldn’t you try to make more money. But let’s look at the words Chris is using when grades don’t come back how he wanted. “Think” “thought” “shoulda” and Chris is very well knowledge collector, does a lot of grading and I’m sure any of us would look to his advice on to get certain cards graded. However some other random dude “thought thinks or shoulda” these cards deserved the grades they got. It’s just random or guess work. It’s a scam
I don't get the "scam" argument. It is what it is - a professional opinion. when I'm at my kid's baseball games, I disagree all the time w/ balls and strike calls but at the end of the day, the umpire is the professional there. I am entitled to disagree and it's possible that the ump (or card grader) is going to get some wrong. but no matter what, it is subjective. If I were in the market for a $500 + 1955 Bowman card, I'd feel much better knowing that the condition has been evaluated by a professional and that the card, which is very condition sensitive, will be preserved in that condition as long as it's in the slab.
It's because humans want results that fit what their eyes see. Flaws are more visible under magnification. Even Chris missed a mark on one of these cards. In the age of internet sales, it would be impossible to evaluate a raw card you are trying to buy. Thus, Grading companies step in and provide a service that gives both the buyer and seller a baseline on the condition of the card.
And if you watched his video you would see he negatively remarks on grading several times like that PSA hasn't done me dirty yet clearly suggesting that PSA has done him dirty in the past enough times that he is expecting it to happen so why use a grading company I will tell you why because all the newbies and flippers and people that clearly know nothing of the industry base all their business and transactions off PSA grading which is very dangerous for the future of the business
I'm watching this video before you even get to the graded cards u make a very dubious remark. You suspect the more you pay for each graded card, the better the grade you get. Then you comment PSA isn't doing me dirty yet. Then after just a few cards into the video you start to question the grades. Once again please stop giving grading companies such power over us you are commenting negatively but yet you keep using them. I need not ask why as I know why you are aware that the buyers are hung up on graded cards and you need graded cards to facilitate your business and sales. Then at the end of the video you confirm my suspicions. We need to get away from grading companies and back to the buyer and seller coming to an ambical agreement on the grade and price
I think you somehow missed that Chris' remark was in jest... and he paid the extra $ to get them back faster since several were already sold, etc... I do agree with you that there is a big power imbalance in the hobby with grading companies almost never having to answer for stupefying results, but that isn't what went on in this video... Chris more or less hit the grades on the nose most of the time and that resulted in increased value to him so I can't see why he'd stop doing that... And I think you are way off with the suggestion that we're better off saying, 'trust me, this card is perfect/ex/vg/etc.'... The grading companies are mostly taking the guesswork and misrepresentation out of the buy/sell equation...
I love the high end vintage, nice return overall!

Its a good point and I have been using SGC for vintage quite a bit more lately. A lot of these were part of sets and the buyer requested PSA

Love the content always!
2 questions
1. What's the most you have paid for a single card $$ value.
2.will you start using PSA to eBay to keep flipping inventory?
If the Graham is a high end 5 you could still get 900+ for it. The Lansford is great!
To better define the edges of cards.Think of an edge of a coin,if grading. The same with cards edges matter.Great vid!!
Good info. Cracking out that Ohtani 9 and selling raw?

Hi Chris. Do you have a buyer yet for the Otto? I am interested.
How do I purchase any of these ?

I thought PSA was getting rid of the qualifier. It makes it more confusing.
MK qualifier will always be there if card is marked, same with MC if card is miscut. They also still have OC which can be assigned at the discretion of grader (but often they just drop the overall grade instead of using OC).

48 Bowman is far from the ugliest sets ever. I think the early 90’s are some of the ugliest ever.
Fair point!
