- “The more I let go and the more I risk, the more I dare to really tell the story…” Violinist Shunske Sato talks about ‘Erbarme dich’, one of the most emotional movements of the St Matthew Passion, which he performed with the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. He explains how, in a music manner, he reacts to this critical moment in the Passion.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on April 16th and 19th 2014 at the Grote Kerk, Naarden. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

"That´s the the only way to do it, If you´re not moved, you can´t move people!"
Well said Mr Sato!
One of the best analyses of this aria, because it is not purely intellectual but so human. Thanks, Mr.Sato.
Erbarme Dich made me remember the day I was baptized. Makes me cry every time...
Bravo!!! For your explanation, for your passion on music and for sharing it with us!!! Thank you Sato!!!
I love hearing from musicians about their impression on the music they play. They have a unique perspective about the emotional side and the technical delivery and can appreciate and describe how both are related. Thanks.
This interview contains a full of insight. Thank you.
Very enlightening to hear the views of such a fine performer on the subject of such a sublime work.
A revelation on many levels, thanks
The Erbarme dich isn't just the greatest aria of the Passion. It's probably the greatest aria ever written in Western music.
I'm a bit biased (being a baritone), but I think "Mache dich" has a slight edge over this one!
@@grantyoungblood7895 I have seen professional musicians and singers with tears in their eyes while performing the Erbarme dich. The number of vocal works that can do that are as rare as hen's teeth.
@@PointyTailofSatan Would you include the Liebestod from the end of “Tristan und Isolde” on that list?
Another one for me is Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria”.
@@grantyoungblood7895 Both are great. And one could easily include works by composers like Tallis and Palestrina, and even works by modern composers like Arvo Part. But again, you rarely see people, and even more rare, musicians, breaking down in tears performing them, as happens with the Erbarme dich.
@@PointyTailofSatan I want to add the swan of Saint-Saens to that list, although not vocal.
A very thoughtful interpretation beautifully fusing the music to the Holy Scriptures.
a fairy tale
You're wonderful. I really enjoyed that, thank you
I would not doubt that the three dissonant chords in the violin represent Peter’s denials of Christ. And, I agree that Bach’s polyphonic textures weave a tapestry that is both human and divine or ethereal, which tends to capture, raise and ultimately refine our consciousness.
So beautiful...
This work is beautiful, whenever I hear that part transmits that feeling of melancholy that presses my heart, thank you for your work.
Fine explanation - from the heart - Maestro Sato. Thanks.
Magnífico análisis de este bellísimo aria con el que sentirse volar es lo más fácil hasta el infinito además. GRACIAS, GRACIAS, infinitas gracias por compartir tan bella composición. ¡FELICITACIONES!⚘
Such a marvellous work. Great interview.
Amazing. Thanks
What a Master!
Gracias
maravilloso

Who is the (excellent) Evangelist???
Benjamin Hulett
Lol.
