  • Peter Knego's latest Sailing Day video rolls back the clock 15 years to 2007 on a busy August day with dozens of cruise ships and ferries in the port of Piraeus. An early morning visit to the central port finds GA ferries' ROMILDA, Hellenic Seaways' NISSOS MYKONOS and POSIDON HELLAS, Louis Cruises' PERLA (ex SOUTHWARD) and the laid up day cruise ships AEGEAN GLORY and Royal Olympic's classic HERMES (ex JUGOSLAVIA). Captured sailing that morning, the procession of cruise ships included Louis Cruises' ORIENT QUEEN (ex STARWARD), Golden Sun Cruises AEGEAN two (ex AUSONIA), Monarch Classic Cruises OCEAN MONARCH (ex DAPHNE) and Louis Cruises' CRISTAL (ex SALLY ALBATROSS). Before boarding Monarch Classic Cruises' BLUE MONARCH (ex RENAISSANCE) in Kanellos, Knego also captured the GRAND VOYAGER (ex OLYMPIC VOYAGER). Seen from BLUE MONARCH are Hellenic Seaways' NISSOS LEROS and ARTEMIS, Anen Lines' MYRTIDIOTISA, the day cruise ship GIORGIS, Blue Star Ferries' BLUE STAR NAXOS, Minoan Lines' FESTOS PALACE and GA Ferries' ANTHI MARINA, to name just a few! Another day in paradise for shiplovers! #classiccruiseships #oceanliners #louiscruises #celestyalcruises #romilda #gaferries #ssausonia #ssaegeantwo #bluemonarch #monarchclassiccruises #greekferries #greekcruiseships #classicships #oldships #anthimarina #piraeus #piraeuships #piraeusships #piraeusport

    why i love being in piraeus ship watching...this reminded me of the days in vancouver i would spend back in the 80's & 90's watching the classics sail out taking photos

      Thanks for commenting, Jeff! My first Vancouver trip was in 1995. So wish I had gotten there in the 80s. It's the most beautiful backdrop for sailings and arrivals and the lighting is almost always good.

    Nice to see the former NCL Southward........ my partner at the time and I had the privilege of sailing her way back in 1989 !
    Great memories and a nice video of some wonderful classic ships!

      SOUTHWARD was stunningly sleek. She and her sister were such a pleasure to look at. Never sailed in her but did visit her several times as SOUTHWARD. Thank you for posting. :)

    Great. Sad to see how many ladies and companies have gone now...
    Even (Grand) Voyager is difficult to be seen in Piraeus now , since she is at Far East and difficult to return

    I did a cruise to the greek islands and pireaus with the ocean monarch ship in 2006, she was an old style comfortable ship.. those were the days.

    WOW that's quite a lineup of ships for this video Peter. Very impressive how you kept up with each one coming and going. The former STARWARD brought back memories of seeing her at Miami when we cruised out of there. The OCEAN MONARCH, that was the ship my late husband sailed on when she was the WORLD RENAISSANCE, not sure if she was with Costa Cruise Line at the time it was before he met me.

      Thanks so much for watching, Clive! I, too, sailed in those two classics, DAPHNE as OCEAN MONARCH the year before I shot this and AUSONIA the year before that, then AEGEAN two the following week and IVORY the next year. So glad we had those opportunities when we did. :)

    I just bought a Brochure from you on Ebay (Regent Isle), Glad to see you posting again! (and at one of my favorite subjects, Greece!)
    Romilda got off lucky compared to her sisters...you should see her once sistership "Pride of Al Salam 95" (originally Free Enterprise VI) or the KMP BSP III (Formerly Free Enterprise VII), Both Victims of the 1980s era "Jumboization" craze
    Aegean Glory was always a favorite of mine for one simple reason, the Blue and Red Stripe, reminded me so much of the Starlite and Regency Cruise ships : )
    Fun fact about Orient Queen, originally she had a stern door...but not like a normal ferry where it is a basic ramp, she had a Lifting stern VISOR over a ramp!, only ship I have ever seen like that, its also probably why she had that weird stern "docking bridge" too!
    I have a respect for any ship that wore the Golden Sun Cruises colors, that was the Last Major Cruise line the Late Tony Lelakis operated, well, sort of anyway
    Daphne and Danae were (in my eyes) among the best conversions of any ship into a cruise ship that I have ever seen, the only thing you could tell that she was a conversion from was the bow and stern! (everything else looked like it was a newbuild!)
    regarding Cristal, if anyone wants a good documentary about her (or at least the fire that led to her being eventually rebuilt) you can find one on you tube, it has INCREDIBLE footage! (set to a rather nice instrumental of the song "Fugle" by Jorgen Olsen)
    I am so glad you caught nefeli, her story is neat, she was an improved one-off of the older "Naruo" class (Naruo, Shizuki, Ikuho, and Awaji) built between 1985 and 1987 for Koshien Ferry, all of them having their own fascinating post Japan careers! (Especially Shizuki and Ikhuo, which were sold to Indonesia and DRASTICALLY rebuilt there, with both now sporting a Gigantic passenger "box" extension between and aft of the funnels)
    Grand Voyager was always so strange looking to me, like they started building a ferry but last minute changed her into a cruise ship
    7:37 AH the lovely Muroto...she has two sisters in Indonesia (BSP 1 and Mufidah) which were built slightly differently for other owners, but same specifications, they were all very similar to the Older Okudogo 1 and 2 with that very distinct tall finned funnel unlike almost any other Japanese ferry of that era (well, aside from maybe the Sunflower 11 and Queen Corals)
    oh dear god Anthi Marina...yet ANOTHER Jumboization victim, but at least the Greeks gave her a better looking bow and stern when rebuilding her...still...wouldn't trust her seaworthyness considering she was a sister of Herald of Free Enterprise
    Again, INCREDIBLE material as usual my friend!

      Wow, I never cease to be amazed by your knowledge of some of these more obscure vessels. Thanks for watching and for your incredible post. Great information that is much appreciated! And thanks for rescuing REGENT ISLE. :)

    Now that was a busy day of passenger ships! Thank you, Peter, sharing all this visual material with us but also the information that goes with them. I always admire how easily you say names that, for many of us, are from foreign languages. It's a pleasure to hear them correctly pronounced. I may have mentioned before that I'm from small-town Indiana and and once thought "thing" and "thang" were separate words!

    • @midshipcinema

      Indeed, it was! Piraeus never disappoints. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, Andrew. With a last name like mine, I learned early to at least try and pronounce things properly, although I may miss the mark on a few of these ship names. :)

    She really was a beauty, even with the later vandalism!

    • @midshipcinema
      @midshipcinema  2 года назад

      If you mean AUSONIA/AEGEAN two, couldn't agree more. Eve the vandalism wasn't as bad as it could have been, it's just that it didn't mesh with the original parts. They actually moved the lower portion of her superstructure forward, which took some care and skill, versus just building a box to accommodate the expansion. :)

      @@midshipcinema Yes Peter, she always strongly appealed in every photo I have ever seen of her! Then, thanks to my good fortune, I saw her close up and personal when I was in Piraeus sailing on Saga Ruby around 2007. It’s a shame, but I just cannot get excited about the new ships we see today. I know they are technological marvels, but they just don’t have the same appeal!

    Hi Peter. Fantastic for me to see Pireaus. I was a ship board photog in the 80s and 90s for Marne Photo Service and had the contract for Epirotiki. I worked on the beautiful World Renaissance and noticed that did a cruise on her as Blue Monarch. Will you be posting a video of this ship in the future? Regards Jeremy

    • @midshipcinema
      @midshipcinema  2 года назад +1

      Hi Jeremy -- thank you so much for posting here. What a great contract that must have been. I can only imagine what ships you saw in the 80s. My longer videos aren't doing very well of late but I will probably get around to BLUE MONARCH at some point in the future. I think externally she was a stunning ship. I photographed her over the years in all three of her guises (four if ROC is to be counted separately of Epirotiki) and have always enjoyed looking at her. I have her bell and builder's plate and all of the Lozzi tapestries that survived (minus a few that were sold) here.

    You may not have an answer to this. But just wondering if it's possible to come back in an after life. If so might one be able to live aboard that glamorous Orient Queen?

    The Alexandra L mainly known in Greece with the former name of Anemos of Nomikos lines, used to travel in the 90s from Thesaloniki to Crete via Skiathos, Skyros and the Cyclades Islands(28 hours journey), so many memories…unfortunately she is going to be scrapped soon I think…

    • @midshipcinema
      @midshipcinema  2 года назад +1

      Thank you, Nick. Well, even if she does get scrapped, which I would suspect will be the case since there are so many newer ships getting the axe, she certainly had a long run.
