- Опубликовано: 15 окт 2024
- We're showing how we're converting our IBC totes so that we can access the water and even attach a garden hose to it.
Our off-grid first flush totes from our rainwater harvesting system were filled to the brim with the last monsoon rains we got. We needed this attachment asap.

When you have a fitting that tightens in clockwise, you need to put the tape on the fitting in a clockwise direction so that it won't try to unwind as you tighten. Also, with Teflon tape going into a plastic thread, be careful about tightening too much. It's easy to crack fittings that way. I only use thread sealant on plastic, or brass for that matter. You can always tighten or reseal, but once you crack, you can never go back.
Thank you so much for this critical information
Gaining access to all that water without wasting it is a must. Nice DIY project video.
Absolutely, Eric! Thank you!🙏
Thank you this is so helpful for me. I don't have a guy to help. You just made it so easy to see what I needed. Thank you thank you.
Water not only for the humble bees but also for the rabbits and other thirsty critters out there. Y'all do good pretty well!
😃Thank you! You have to take care of the critters.😃
Glad you are going to get to use some of that valuable rain water. Thanks for sharing it with the local wildlife, that was awesome to see.
😃Thanks Eric!
Such a joy watching Jessica fill the jugs with lovely clean water for the plants and wild life, rain water is the best made me realise that if the water dish I kept in the enclosure for my veg patch for the birds was on the outside the odd Ferrell rabbits that got into my garden would not bite into the hose pipe to get water .Thanks for that tip well-done thanks for the video's
That's good thinking. Luckily we haven't had anything try to bite into our hose.😬
That is awesome that you used off the shelf parts. It's always good to have a backup to specialty parts, especially on a homestead. Very cool that you all are putting out water for your furry friends. Can't wait to see the pluming to your main tanks. Keep up the great videos. Trent
Thanks Trent! We love being able to help take care of the local wildlife. 😃
Great conversion, Jim. Love the way you put out water for the wildlife Jessica, looks like they appreciated it.. Bless you. Warmest wishes to you both. Hugs Carole in the UK.
Thank you so much Carole!!🙏
I remember when you first showed this fitting. I looked it up and bought 2 for my totes at the time, I now need a little more but you brought it to my attention that they dont have conventional fittings. Great to, sometimes you gotta spend a little extra for something solid.
Thanks Natacha! I'm glad this info helped.🙏
Things are looking good
Thanks William!
Very Awesome and I know that the wifey is extremely happy about using this water that everyone should use so excited about your water systems thumbs up my friends WOW
Thank you very much! We're definitely excited about being able to use this water. 😃🙏
The animals appreciate all your hard work catching that water looks like! Have a great day y’all!
😃Thank you! Hopefully we'll be making a little oasis out here.😁🙏
That is on there tight. Tight like a tiger! great job Jim. The rabbits seem grateful on having the water. lol
Lol! The rabbits are definitely happy!😁
Thanks Sidney!🙏
Nice DIY!! Love how you care for the wildlife. It really warms my heart to see the rabbits in this video. Beautiful 💖💕🌷🌳🍃
Thanks Michele! Caring for the wildlife is part of how we want to create balance out here.😃
@@ourselfreliantlife That's so beautiful.
That is so cool you guys. That will make such a difference to your off grid life.
😃Thank you! We hope so. 😁
Thanks for the parts list to make the conversion Jim. Very helpful. I hadn't seen the camlock fittings before. Good to know if we happen to get any IBC totes in the future. Cool to see the wildlife hanging around.
Thanks Jay! I had to do a bit of research to find just the right attachment. Those cam locks do an amazing job. 😃
Hmmm where is this parts list? I dont see anything posted. Any Tractor supply nothing pops up for "CAM LOK"
@@erxkeel they meant part list in the video if you listen to it and and cam-lock is a brand
Great job jim, and jess, your so kind d to make sure theirs water for the bees, and birds, and bunnies, love you guys! God Bless, xoxoxo
Thanks Lori! We enjoy taking care of the native wildlife. 😃🙏
I just love that your system is working. So happy for you.
Thanks so much Granny Bee!
Great job! Simple set up, great solution. Just need to wrap your threads with plumber tape in a clockwise direction. Just a word of advise from a plumber. 😊
I wonder what size is the cam-lock?
Good job guys, you’ve got water. Once you plumb in the lager tanks, how many days of water will to get out of them?
😃Thank you! Hopefully our current tanks will hold us for four or five months. 😁
I have one of these stored at my brothers house. Thank you so much for teaching us how to do this! Y'all take care, God bless ❤🙏
Thank you Debbie!🙏
Everything is so easy if you know how to do things Good on you Jim
😃Thanks Jack! It just takes practice.
I love the homemade birdbath/beebath 😊 I’m so glad y’all got water. ❤️👍
😃Thanks Pam! We're going to make this a wildlife refuge. 😆👍
Awesome job! I'm taking notes. We've got a move planned in a couple of years. Looking to live in a dryer climate. And we've got 4 totes ready to go!
Nice Krystal! Already planning ahead!😃
Great work and I love your brakes of wildlife. Nice watering hole for them too.
Thank you! It's nice to be able to capture and show all the cool wildlife around here. 😃🙏
Thanks for the options presented. I'd add a union before the reducing fitting. This way, should there be a design change, you don't have to rip out back to the cam lock.
Works great!!
Thats really cool that Jessica takes care of the wild lifr
Thanks Linda! We definitely want a place that gets balanced with the environment around us.🙏
That's a million dollar conversion.
Careful, There are 4 or more different attachment types on these shutoff valves not all are cam-locks. I had a S60X6 Buttress thread.
Awesome water system. 💕😍👍🤩👫👨👦👦👨👩👧👧
Thank you!🙏
Great video as always. Looked like you done that before. That sure was a great job. Now all you need is a water hose. I wish I had brown grass like you got .
😆Thank you!
I love that, I'm going to try it!!
Great job !!! The animals love the water too !!!
😃Thank you!🙏
Simple DIY project for sure , super
Thanks Giles!🙏
Nice DIY!
Thanks Josh!
that's a nice addition, and cut down on spilling by not having to use that big fitting on the tank.
Absolutely Vernon! That's what we were thinking. 😃
Hooray! Now for the 1,001 ways to use rainwater posts! I got free cam-loc adapters when I bought my totes. So much easier than buying 10 pieces for the conversion. I've spent too much time staring at all the plumbing choices at Ace Hardware.
😲Free cam lock adapters!? That's awesome! That is better than having to put together your own. 😃
Thanks. Nice video helped me a lot
Things sure got busy around there after the rain. I have to giggle when you said in the same sentence a 0.8 of an inch of rain and monsoon. I am so use to typical rain being that here and sometimes more than that the past few months. Bahaha Glad the rain catchment system is working. Looks like you needed the bigger totes on the new roof and smaller ones on the smaller roof. :)
😆Thanks Liana! Sometimes it's like a different world.😁👍
So true :)
Thank you. Great video. Great directions . . .
That was great. Saved this DIY. Your getting things done. Hope that rain softened up that ground for you.😜 Jess feeding the wild life water was a great ending.
Thank you! It did soften the ground a bit.😃
I had to use similar fittings on my rain tote because the plastic ball valve in the tote broke. They are not really meant for long term use so something like this fitting is a MUST.
Really good point! I didn't even think of the longevity of the valve in the tote.😃👍
So cute the bunny drinking ^^
Good job jim
Thanks James!🙏
Great job! That is so smart! It seemed to work like a charm. So cute, the bunny 🐰 was drinking water 😊
😃Thanks Zule! The bunnies are cute! Until they come after the garden.😂👍
Green Dream Project lol true ! 😂
Very nice. I have been thinking about how to add a spigot to my IBC tote as well. That's a pretty simple set up. I like it!
Awesome! I came up with this because I didn't want to have to buy anything online. I wanted something to put together myself. It worked out well. 😃
good job Jim, that is a handy conversion to have
Thanks Joey!🙏
I was trying to find a way to do this. Thank you so much for explaining this! Very helpful video.
Another successful project and good info. We always enjoy seeing what you have going on there. 😀
Thank you! The animals love it. 😃
Great job! I will need this info when I get to AZ. Ahh... then bunnies are so cute!
😆Thanks Sandra!🙏
That was pretty easy! Nice job Jim! 👍🏻
Lol! Yeah, not anywhere near as complicated as your DIY's!😆Thanks Dominic!
Green Dream Project Lol! Anything is easy once you know how to do it! 😂😂😂
I was wondering if ya was gonna need Jess to come over there and lock that cam-lock down for ya. LOL. Good job done buddy. Hope you two have a great day!
Lol!! No doubt! That would have been an embarrassing video. 🤔 It would have been funny though.😆👍 Thanks so much CB!!🙏
Good job 👍
Thank you!🙏
Thanks for the help.
Even the bunnies get to try out the water.
😆We can't forget about the bunnies.😃
As others pointed out, there are a lot of different fittings for those IBC totes, worse some fittings just leak. The gator locks are pretty good but you still need to add fittings. If you have a bunch of tanks like I do, it can be hundreds of dollars on fittings. I discovered a cheaper way. Get a 3/4 uniseal. They cost about $3, use a 1 1/4 Holesaw, make hole and attach your uniseal with a length of 3/4 PVC. Attach your tap on the outside of the PVC pipe and you are done.
You make it all look so easy lol which is a good thing for me! Lol
😆Thanks CG!🙏
Good job
Thank you!
🙋♂️ Hi Jim. Great demonstration. It's amazing how many times I have seen guys wrap the thread tape in the wrong direction. 👍👍 Best wishes Bob.
😃Thanks Bob! I was probably one of them not too long ago.😆👍
Well you got it right now. 👍👍
Great video! Saving for when we get IBC tote.
Awesome! Thank you!
✋🏼👊🏼😃❤️Very cool. Looking good. Love how you were able to set up some water dishes from the critters. Good times. Namaste 🙏🏼☮️
Thanks Jace!
Hello and great video. I was wondering. I want to buy 4 ICB tanks for my garden. There was alcohol in them before and I am not sure if that is ok or if there will be any permanent toxic residue. I dont really think so but I am not sure. Do you have any info on such an issue? Dont want to buy anything toxic or damaging to plants.
Thanks for sharing
It may depend on what type of alcohol. Do you know?
Great work Jimmy👍
Thanks Rick!🙏
It always feels better to make attachments yourself.
Definitely! You never know if they stop selling them on line. This will probably work better as well.🙏
VERY HELPFUL!!!!
Nicely done, Jim! Reminds me that I need to get some plumbing tape.
Thank you! Get that plumbing tape!😆👍
Love how this is working!!!
Thank you! We're happy with how it's working so far.🙏
Great video, just what I was looking for, thanks!
I bought those cam lock fittings yesterday at TSC like you said, they had them on the shelf. Can’t wait to finish my two tank rain catchment system now.
I wish I would have seen this video before I went to Lowe's and my local plumbing company in Troy Alabama because I have the same add-ons
Thread tape always goes on the direction the fitting does. Your thought process is right. Just doing it backwards.
Really like the setup seems as though its gonna work pretty awesome ty for sharing sledgehammered that like button and sharing to Twitter
Thanks so much!🙏
This was great thanks for your help Jim!
I have two IBC totes that have 2 1/2 inch release spouts. I can't seem to find any coupling that fit them, online and stores near by..... any help to find them would be appreciated.
Same for me. Mine is actually a bit smaller than 2 1/2 in
Great job! I’ve been debating buying a couple of more, or trying to make something.... by Jove, I think you’ve got it!!
😃Thank you! They've been working great so far.
So all totes dispenser are the same width?
👍 awesome, great job
Thank you!🙏
Awesome!
😃Thank you!
Can you please take a moment to list your supplies and where you bought them. I'm from NYC and don't understand anything you say. Thanks.
Nice wildlife shots. What about freezing in the winter on your totes and plumbing?
Thank James! It's an issue, but definitely something we're aware of. 😃
@@ourselfreliantlife oh! I was just wondering...does it get cold enough to beak things?
I wish our totes had the same connection where we could use the cam lock. How is your pressure?
The pressure is decent enough for our needs.
I have a 330 gallon tote and it's 2 1/2 inch. Tried everywhere (Lowes, Home Depot, Ace) and can't find anything. Everyone has 2 inch or 3 inch - any idea where I can get a 2 1/2 inch?
buy a rubber coupling with hose clamps. slip over fitting
What does the cammlock, lock onto? Why not just a screw on fitting?
Trying to do this on my own....
IBC totes have different kinds of fittings depending on the ball valve, the one in the video was a cam lock. I've seen them with 2 inch NPT and 2 inch Buttress threads. Basically when you get your tote, you'll have to look at your connection.
Good info.
Thanks Kiri!🙏
Would this work for a pressure washer or would I need a water pump
For a pressure washer I would definitely add a pump or a pressure tank. I don't think you could gravity feed quite fast enough.
I'm a newbie to the channel & I know this video is a year old...was wondering what the cam-lock does versus other PVC type piping to be able to use a garden hose, etc.? The cam-lock looks really durable! Does it still work well?
It does work well and is holding up.
The reason for the cam loc I believe the unique outlets on the IBC totes. They need to grip onto the skinny neck.
I hooked mine up to my ICB tote and absolutely no pressure coming out of the hose. What could be the problem how do I increase pressure
Your the second one I have seen put Teflon tape on backwards. Clockwise direction of threads not contorclockwise were Teflon just unravels
What sizes does the gator lock need to be?
I believe it's a two inch gator lock.
@@ourselfreliantlife Thanks, cleaning mine out now and need to attach one. Great channel, appreciate your videos.
@@ourselfreliantlife Got it on and is working well, thanks again.
Does the cam lock have threads.
very nice, and simple! I was going to ask yesterday if you were going to put a garden hose attachment on the first flush! I think that one rabbit might have been a jackalope!
Lol! Maybe it was a jackalope. 😆Thanks Paul! Now we can attach the hose if we want.😃
What Size water pump did you use?
What’s a good source to get ibc tote...breweries?
Yes, or any type of bottler. I got some free ones from Coca-Cola.😃
Is it possible to get pressure out of the tank with a garden hose pipe
The higher the tote, the more pressure you would get
What size cam lock did you use ?
Hey Jim I have a problem with my water flow there not so much pressure/: It’s not getting enough water into my pressure washer help meee
Is your tote spout threaded ? Very good info, the “big box store” tried to sell me 100 different pc’s. that would have cost well over $100. We don’t have a tractor that’s not 45-1 hour away.
It does have a small thread on it, but the cam locks make it possible for the attachments. Yeah, this combo isn't that expensive.
Hi dear friend, my ibc has 1 1/2 inch valve and its damaged, how to freshly fit another from the begging (101)
I love that you water the wildlife...I have two bunnies too, tame ones though (for garden fertilizer). And I have a saucer with rocks in it for the bees, wasps, and birds. Great minds think alike, lol. Nice faucet install. It looks heavy duty. Will you attach a hose to it?
Thank you! We might. Right now we're filling jugs, but a hose is an option.
How much psi do you get?
Constructive input here. wrong way on the tape, wrap opposite direction you will be turning it to tighten. Also, start at the top of the threads and work your way out. Just FYI
