    These make ideal thermal mass for those with solar or boiler hot water. Normally they hold 1000 kgs of water but if you put your hot and cold thermal exchange loops in and you can gently fill them with gravel, top up with glycol and water and you have about 4 tonnes of thermal mass. Strap polystyrene around the outside of the cage and backfill with shredded polystyrene and you're set. The glycol keeps the thing sterile and ensures good conductivity between the mass and the loop

If you stick with the pallet base in these type units offer mobility.The whole stack is mobil! I am going to cut access holes in several then use them as the base for a work bench!

    I use one to overwinter my Koi in my basement. My outdoor pond is too small for them in the winter as the pond freezes over quite a bit. It's clean and I am extremely happy with it. The fish survive nicely as I have a pump and filters.

      Great idea. You should post a picture of it on Pinterest!?
      IF your pond was about 4' deep, all you would need to do is buy a Wallyworld fish tank heater & place the heating coil in the bottom of your Koi pond. Make sure you leave some leaves & sediment down in the bottom.
      They will burrow down into it, & winter over with NO PROBLEMS.

    We use one for a shower. You need to make sure you watch out for algae so painting it helps. Or using chlorine in like for a pool. That’s because the algae can get trapped in your instant hot water heater. We use with a small pump from the top as we are rural and haven’t found the fittings just yet. It is about a weeks worth of showers for dozens of people. And over a month for two. We use the drain water to water plants. We use rocks for filtering debris.

    • @mobyduck3672
      @mobyduck3672 6 лет назад +4

      Generally algae doesn't grow in the dark so painting, (black), will definitely help but did you know that you can also buy black IBC tanks. Not as common, but they are available. My black ones are food grade and once held glycerine but they use them for lots of other liquid food products and syrups. I once had open topped galvanised water tanks that grew sheets of thick algae inside. Cleaned them out and put corrugated iron covers over them, and it hasn't come back in more than 20 years since the light was excluded. Black plastic tanks would also preheat your shower water in sunny weather and save on heating costs.

      Baking soda & peroxide, natural pool cleaner maintain, agree black & will conduct heat not much but ehhh... I think would be great raised garden beds fill the lower half with bark, wood, the top 12 inches for good Earth, drain holes, pvc or drip hoses for conserving water, good height for older folks. So many, oh the possiblity's...

    I recently picked up a 330 myself, talked to some hazmat guys, the city water works, and a university chemistry lab. They all said it's possible to clean out some non food grade ibcs, all said 'rinse them out, air out the chemicals, use dish soap, pressure wash the sides and then you can have the water tested for potability'. The city said they'd charge a pretty penny for it but the University said it's only $15 per test they run and recommended which ones to run.

    I like the shower idea as that would be great for use by a pool or in emergency situations. What I noticed was that some of the uses only require the plastic tank such as the nifty little dog houses and rabbit hutch. The metal "basket" could be used as a puppy playpen for example while the tank is used to raise fish. It's cool to re-purpose, but better that neither part or component goes to waste.
    I think all these ideas are interesting, but we don't all need or do the same things. Most of us could use water storage, or a septic system or might need to raise food or livestock, but I like and would use the portable shower, the animal shelters, and water storage (just for hurricane season) and the duck blind or mini-office would just be cool to make.
    As far building composting bins, I think the plastic tank could be excluded and a layer of chicken wire be wrapped around the metal cage. The plastic might hold moisture and not allow enough air flow.

    You can also use them as a mobile water supply to fight a small brush or grass fire around your home. Just mount one on the back of a 3/4 or one ton pick up, or flat bed truck, and plumb in into a small portable gas powered water pump, and add a reel for some hose. Make a Home made Brush fire Skid unit with one, or 2 of these totes as your water supply.

      Google on septic tanks then go to the "images" tab. There you will find ALL KINDS of illustrations on septic tank designs, internal baffles, pickups, sludge chambers, you name it! If your going to design your own permitted tank try to work closely with the inspector. They can be a good source of info and guidance. If this is a rogue "off the books" install then of course all the above advice does not apply and just glean ideas from the google image search.

    I made a no weld roof top cargo basket from the top end of an ibc cage for a 2010 ford edge we had. I paid 25dollars for the cage and spend about 30odd dollars for hardware (I reinforced the roof rails by using a t hinge as a center support point) lumbar (I used some pre cut 2by from the hardware store as crossbars) and paint (painted the cage black. I built it in a haste since our trip to Arizona was coming up quick. We drove from central California to both AZ and Texas without incident. Both trips were loaded trips but the AZ was a bit more since we went camping and I wanted to have the whole of the inside of the vehicle "freed up" I would guess I had over 200 lbs up there. I wanted to weigh our load once we got back but it didn't happen. The T hinge center support made it possible to carry that load, otherwise the the rails would of broken

    I've seen the used for anti-vehicle blocks, when filled with concrete (Vibrated into the corners), Also, filled with concrete, sign post bases for many road signs & route marking venues. Adapting the lighting idea & using modern led "corn" lamps, you could give an air strip night lighting for the runway area itself. Not the approach lighting though (too much material demands being placed to do that.
    Take the filled with concrete option mentioned above, using the shooting hide for hunters & build blockhouse pillboxes using IBCs with hard armouring.

    Just because the tote previously held food products does NOT make it food grade unless professionally cleaned and sanitized to meet FDA regulations and standards - which very few sellers do. Buyer Beware - there are lots of shady people selling these claiming theirs are "FOOD GRADE SAFE" - when they have not been cleaned or have held chemicals.

      well if it is food grade it will have the emblem on it to show it is. it has the triangle with a 5 in it if it is food grade material.

    • @egreenie3819
      @egreenie3819 6 лет назад +3

      @@Pepper5655 In reality, it really don't matter about an emblem or a number, simply because someone could have bought some of these totes and stored a pesticide or herbicide in them then decided they didnt need 'em anymore, rinsed them out and resold 'em. Now if you went straight to the food factory and bout 'em there, then I would say they were pretty much safe. Just saying.

    Somebody out there should build a wall out of these things for their shop they could film full of water and circulate hot water with a rocket heater for heat in the winter light would go through for the summer be plenty of structure there to hold weight and if you wanted to you could cut them up and use them for storage on the inside

      Film full of expandable foam or concrete for the people out there that's worried about somebody cutting a hole in their shot you could put a spicket on it on the inside for water to wash your hands if anybody wants to donate a bunch of these to me leave a comment I'll build it you'll see

    i was thinking about making a planter out of one leave it intact fill it with water than build 2 foot high walls around it put rigid insulation on the outside ( furthest away from the tank / water ) and bottom of the walls fill with soil and put in your plants that need the heat as the 1000 liters of water once heated up by the sun will keep the soil warmer over night i think it would work great for colder areas for peppers melons tomatoes and so on it would also be easy to cover if frost is called for or you could make hinged roof panels to fit

    My idea 30 seconds in before reading comments was a shark cage. After reading the comments I noticed two other people said shark tanks. Not sure if they actually meant shark tanks or shark cage. They are two different things so my apologies if that was their idea and they just used the wrong words to describe it.
