Thanks for checking out my suggestion. 🙂
I read that the song is about inner conflict - I did look up the lyrics, but for me Alcest is all about the sound.
For a gentler one from them, about the passage of time, I like 'Autre Temps'. The video sells the theme even to non-French speakers. (edit, I see a comment below that it might be blocked 😞)
For one similar to Protection, I like 'Sapphire' - folks try to look up the words to that one only to learn that it's just vocalisations. 😄
Apparently their genre is "post-metal, shoegaze, and alternative metal".

I absolutely love Alcest, it was the last live show i saw before Covid happened in Feb 2020, they were amazing. They combine the ugly and the beautiful in a perfect way, i just love how they can have brutal but beautiful songs. "Shelter" their album from 2014 is only clean singing and happyish songs, all others are mix of metal and the beautiful parts. All great albums btw, even Shelter grew on me eventhough it was weird at first since it's very different from the others. For example "Voix Sereine" from "Shelter" is absolutely beautiful song. Many of their songs bring me to tears eventhough i don't understand french, just so full of emotion :) They do have a very unique sound and genre they operate in.

I found you because I wanted to see reactions to Manchester Orchestra. The fact that you guys are watching Alcest is why I'm liking and subscribing. Incredible band.

Alcest is great! Sometimes their songs are just beautiful. Very little harsh vocals, most songs have no harsh vocals.
They even did an entire album, 'Shelter' that had no harsh vocals and no metal guitars (the album has guitars but the songs arent metal). All the songs on Shelter are very uplifting sounding, very bright and light with no darkness.
My favorite Alcest album is Le Voyages d'lame, from 2012. I wish you could react to the song/video Autre Temps, but their previous record company Prophecy BC will block any reactions (Alcest has changed labels since).

Update: I've just watched someone who reacted to Alcest's 'Autre Temps' about 6 months ago, and contrary to warnings below, it was apparently not blocked.

His voice reminds me of Alan Parsons. I think the guitars are a bit overwhelming, but that could just be a matter of preference. This strikes me as a kind of progressive metal. But what do I know? Is this song about contraception?

I happened uppon them at a festival last (late) summer, never heard of them before that, and quite liked what I heard.
Can be a bit samey if listened to over a longer period of time though, IMO. But some of it is great, whether it's beautiful or full on blast.

I must say I like song, firstly. Had not heard of this group, either, so looked up and they say post-death metal??????? Have not heard that term before. Death Metal not my usual cup of tea, like some, hate most. Not a song I’ll rush to put on a playlist but would not turn off listening either. ❤️🤘🎸🎻🇦🇺

Death metal isn't my cup of tea either. While Alcest _may_ have some stuff in their back catalog that I wouldn't like, most of what I've heard from them since finding this rabbit hole is much more melodic.

Alcest would be more Post- Black metal than Death. I'm unawares of any Post Death metal acts, not a usual combination tbh.
They're also classified as "Blackgaze" which is a fusion of Black metal and shoegaze. They started out as a traditional black metal band but Neige decided to shift sound and developed the distinct sound they have now (which they have been influential in popularising other acts into doing).
While their roots are in black metal, they have made more shoegaze/post-rock sounding records (notably Shelter)

It's Blackgaze. A Mix between Black Metal and Shoegaze.

I think that song was pulled from the 90s...is this group from the northwest of the US.
