I’m literally in tears!! Rest sweetly grandma Ophelia AKA Big O. She raised 7 children working her fingers to the bone at that place for 32 years. I’m proud to be named after and raised by this woman. Cut from a different cloth 💪🏽 #dcnative
Wow, thank you
💯
❤
Awesome
From Chicago, grew up in ATL, visited a lot of major cities in the US, and trust me D.C. is the most underrated city in the USA hands down. We know it's our nation's capital and how important it is to the world but a lot of folks don't really mention D.C. like they do NYC, ATL, CHI, LA, or H-Town as of late because for some reason D.C. never had a wave in hip-hop. But it's by far one of the most amazing cities I've ever visited and I have a passport. It's like London meets Rome meets Africa! Their whole club scene with the hookah lounges is far, better than any nightclub experience. It's more laid back and chill and if you're a single man you will see some of the most beautiful Black women on the planet from East Africans to African-Americans to Caribbeans. I ate at this spot and the food is amazing.
I'm from Miami FL and I wouldn't say that D.C. was underrated because in the late 90s we started hearing about D.C. after many years later they were rated the murder capital so to me D.C. had become one of the elite Cities.
It’s bc we have gogo. We listen to more gogo than rap 💯
If u grew up in Atlanta that’s where u from. Not Chicago. U just born there
As far as I know, D.C. been elite and well known since the 80's due to Go-Go, the universities, and the party scene here. D.C. was known as the nation's murder capital in the late 80's to 1991 due to the crack cocaine epidemic, so that made D.C. known in a negative way to most people. The DMV been well known among certain people, but maybe other's was just late hearing about it or were fearful of coming here because of it's past reputation just like some people are fearful of New Orleans because of it's past reputation. Just based off my experience D.C. got ATL, CHI, and H-Town beat when it comes to things to do in the city, the music, clubs, education, and job market for African Americans.
Absolutely
I was watching an interview with King Tone from the Latin Kings and l saw Mr. Branch in the background working with the youth in a juvenile detention facility. Those men deserved to be saluted for trying to help the youth.
I wonder is they chopped it up ?

My Grandaddy Al's favorite spot when he visited us from Cali in the late 70s/early 80s..He been gone since '94...Miss you sir...
This joint makes me miss home
All those damn gentrifiers taking over DC
Gully, that was cold blooded. How you going to cut, before the order and taste review. Was the food good?
Right he seems to do that, I wanted to know what was Sean favorite food he would ordered there back in the day or what was the best thing there lol just curious
In the late 80's I used to eat down the Grill as we use to call it....many key players would always eat there was actually the only drama free place in DC you could be sure to enjoy a good meal without any kind of drama day in and day out....this photo brings back sweet memories...
I love places like this.. great history & the walls hold alot of great stories.. #Legendary #Respect
My father use to stay in the joint back then.. I remember eating in there a few times back in the early 90s when I was a young lad💯
Every time I come to DC to visit my family I got to go to the legendary Florida Avenue Grill. And hit Bens

Good interview. You should do one with Sean branch and ears the christ together Chopin up about DC past in the 80's and the present how it changed.
Continue to sleep beautifully Auntie!! You changed not only Florida Ave by DC. - Ophelia Jones ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
RIP MRS JONES
Brings back so many memories
One thing I can say about the 80s and early 90s is this... being from Oakland,CA a place where THE REAL RICKY ROSS said crack was first invented/tested. The stories of those era's sound the same no matter what city or state you we're in. Me being 37 and growing up in the middle/tail end of the Crack era. It will never be another era like that again. GREAT WORK T.R.G.T. If you haven't came to the Bay yet you should. Keep it going.
Gully with the Skully.. this is a nice piece put together King..👍🏾👍🏾
Sean branch a real OG ✊🏽
I missed DC...Company of Three was my spot after State of the Union and Republic closed down...DMV will remain in my heart.
Yes, indeed. But as BIG said: "Things dun changed."
Linwood (R. I. P) came up washing cars outside their. You could definitely get plugged in right there. 😎
You celebrating genocide like it cool; FOH
Allen Jones dude said plugged in like basically meet all the right people. Pretty sure that’s what he’s talking bout 🤔🧐😂

wow such a master piece of a place growing up in nw dc going and graduating from cardozo this grill has always been there unfortunately i was able to catch the older version but it has always been a staple of the community my grandmother house on 14th and w st i use to always walk pass this grill and new that it was something special about this place as a kid growing up (STEVEN DAVIS)
I Went To The Website And Looked At The Menu ~ All I Can Say Is WOW 👍🏽👍🏽
Given all the ups and downs places like that are little pieces of America that are still left here. Good to see places like that still thriving with no end it sight.
The FLA Grill was that spot...also on Mt. Pleasant you had Little Giant near Lincoln Jr. High.
True that that correct a comment from peezy23 on here mention that gogo was a backdrop for rap within the early to mid 80s in NYC, with rap artists like LL Cool J and Salt-Pepper you mention. But it was even more than before that time that NYC was digging that DC Gogo beat from DC with one of the earliest beginners of the NYC Hip-hop and Rap Game, "Kurtis Blow" between the late 70s and early 80s he being the 1st Rap Superstar sign to a major recording labor, check out his GoGo and Rap tune, "I'M CHILLIN", that was huge in the 80s, NYC Rapper. So yes you're right DC was already in the Mix before those other cities you mention as they all later jumped aboard that NYC Hip-hop and Rap Game.
Gully, please ask Sean Branch to do more longer interviews or ask him to seriously consider doing a movie. I want to know more about his life from back in the day, his adjustment back into society, and what he is doing now. He has been the most interesting out of all these guys that you talk to, and none of his interviews are longer than 25 minutes.

Yep, a lot of DC is getting gentrified. They are building up in the rough parts of Southeast.
