I replied to a comment about listening to the songs in order with this, in case you're curious why I opt to listen to things out of order: IMO listening to things like this in order would drastically negatively change the way I make the content. When I've done videos on long pieces of media before, it's been grueling haha. I enjoyed Hamilton for example, but being switched on & presenting on camera for 3 hours straight exhausted me so much that I didn't film for like two weeks lmao. So with that in mind, if I was to do them in order I'd be getting through about 5 songs when there's 23 on the soundtrack. Means progress would be very slow & people would get frustrated at only hearing small sections in each video. Besides, I've tried to keep a focus on the music aspect - looking at things in isolation or without context has always been my favourite way of doing these, like I mentioned at the end of the video it's just a fun engaging way to interact with the content. I don't really get to do that outside of when I make content. I don't kid myself, I know reacting to things without context and playing the game of trying to work it out isn't the content that everyone necessarily wants to see. With that said though, I feel like doing it the other way would have a lot more people frustrated in a different way haha.
Once you've reacted to most/all of the songs, I'm all for you listening to them in order Here are some things to keep in mind though: -"Mr No-Name-Kid" is JD, she's calling him that because he's a "noone" in their school -All of the Heathers are students, and Heather Chandler dies literally seconds before me inside of me due to JD poisoning her (it's her ghost singing from here on, only Veronica can see/hear her) -Kindergarten boyfriend is Martha Dunnstock's suicide note. she attempts to kill herself due to all of the bullying she gets because of her weight (being called martha dumptruck- see beautiful) and behaviour (what Ram says to her in big fun) -The production takes place in 1989. Being gay was something to make fun of back then. JD fakes a suicide note from Kurt and Ram saying they killed themselves because the world wouldn't accept them being gay. This is what prompts singing my dead gay son at their funeral
A correction to the lyric video, the person who says “OMG THIS IS AWSOME!” And “IM BIGGER THEN JOHN LENNON!” Is heather chandler’s ghost, not the teacher.
As for the situation with the “gay forbidden love” of Kurt and Ram, the movie this was based on is from 1989. So it was a little bit less accepted back then….
@@horrorhistory7342 * Kurt and Ram dead on the floor * Cop 1: my God, suicide, why? Cop 2: Does this answer you question? * pulls a mineral water bottle out of their bag * Cop 1: Oh man, they were fxgs That's a really "backwoods town in Ohio in 1989" behavior
First song's context: Kurt and Ram (the dude's who got sh0t) tried to date r@p3 Veronica, and after she successfully got away without being harmed, they started a rumor that she had had a threesome with them. This song was basically revenge. Second song's context: Veronica and JD had portrayed all the deaths they caused as su1c1d3s, so, Ms. Fleming (singer) decided to hold an assembly to tell the students that they had people to go to if they were feeling su1c1d@l, and that they weren't alone. Third song's context: After Shine a Light, Ms. Fleming encouraged students to come up and share their hardships with the rest of their peers. No one wanted to, then Heather McNamara got up and told everyone she thought about k1ll1ng herself and basically spilled her heart out. Heather Duke then proceeded to make fun of her and kick her out of the popular kids' group. This song is Heather McNamara's brain envisioning Heather Duke while McNamara tries to 0v3rd0s3 in the bathroom. Veronica stops her, don't worry. Fourth song's context: You already know this is right after Veronica did a murder. But, I think they mislabeled some things at the end. Ms. Fleming wasn't the one yelling about the assembly being awesome and being bigger than John Lennon, it was Heather Chandler in ghost form. Fifth song's context: This is Veronica's first time meeting JD. Kurt and Ram pissed him off, so he's kicking their asses, and Veronica's falling for him.
Additional context for the first song, "Our Love Is God": JD told Veronica that they were using "ich luge bullets" saying they were a tranquilizer and wouldn't actually hurt kurt and ram and it was just gonna be a prank, but obviously, it was a lie. I think this was explained in the song and Matt just missed it. Also it was 1989 so the whole "gay forbidden love" thing was less accepted. Additional context for the fourth song, "The Me Inside of Me": Veronica and JD go to Heather Chandler's house to give her a hangover cure, JD makes a joke about giving her drain cleaner and pours drain cleaner into a separate cup, then when Veronica grabs the wrong cup and JD notices, he doesn't say anything.
What's funny is that if you take a deeep look into the scene in the movie and in the musical when JD said "these are ich luge bullets" that's german. I speak and read German. Not fluently but I know a good amount of it. Ich luge means I'm lying in German. Soo my friends and I were watching it and I freaked the hell out. Because in the movie JD asks veronica if she speaks german. When she responds with "french" he continues. If she did say yes to the question he probably would've said it in French instead of German. Lmao I'm a heathers nerd.
As a german, his pronounciation is so off, that he could just as well have been speaking french. I can't even hear it now that I know that'swhat he's saying :'D
@@addybugstories4695 "my grandad scored a shit tone of them back in ww2... they're like tranquilizers, only they break the surface of the skin. A little blood but no real damage." I've totally seen this movie a gazillion times.
Just for clarification, when Veronica starts singing “our love is god” with JD at the end, she’s basically trying to save herself. If you watch the musical ypu can see that JD basically threatens her during this scene, and pulls her tightly towards him, almost in a chokehold
And later songs really add clarity to everything. To her struggles with her feelings and morality, to why she caved and echoed him in Our Love is God. Including the one that was added in a later production, "I Say No."
The "They'll be the laughing stock" for being gay line has a few reasons. 1) It's set in 89 where the world was much less accepting than it is today, and 2) The musical actually touches on why this is a bad thing, and how they should be accepting, but also that it can take extremes for people to be accepting in "My dead gay son"
In the end of “Our love is god” in the musical, JD is holding his arms around Veronica while Veronica’s singing and facial features becomes progressively frightened while singing those last lines.
Also, I feel I need to say this so pls acknowledge this comment, in the last heathers vid when you listened to Dead Girl Walking reprise, you must the highest and most amazing note in the whole musical
Fight for me is basically the first time we meet JD, and we don’t know anything about him. Before the song they very briefly interacted and veronica says “I didn’t catch your name” with jd replying “I didn’t throw it”. That’s why she says “mr no name kid”
Yeah, I'd argue that admitting your insecurities and fears in front of the whole school is not a good idea, in fact. Actually, it backfires in the play, leading to shine a light reprise in which Heather M. tries to kill herself. The teacher is actually a really bad one, in my opinion. She is very preformative, but doesn't actually care about her students. She made the school read a suicide note. She scolded Heather D. For having a eating disorder, not even helping her at all. Her actions lead to Heather M.'s previously mentioned suicide attempts. So, yeah-the teacher sucks, and shine a light is not supposed to be encouraging in reality despite trying to emulate the sound. I can't remember if you've listened to lifeboat. It takes place in between shine a light and shine a light reprise and deals with Heather M.'s depression and suicidal thoughts. Heather M. is one of my favorites from this musical, so I definitely recommend listening to lifeboat.
Not to mention when she finds out Veronica didn't actually kill herself near the end she's disappointed cause she made a "lovely tribute". At least she managed to direct Veronica to where J.D was.
yeah in shine a lightjust beforeshes like PEOPLE ARE WATCHIGN THERE ARE CAMERAS HELLO CAMERAS blah blah blah to make theschool look like it actually cares that 3 of there students have supposedly offed themselves i depise mrs flemming with a PASSION side note, veronica seems kinda messed up too based on the fact of the circumstances that she fell in love with him but also veronicas parents seem u hinged tooo so yk what do you expect
@@MathewMcKenna Yeah, that's fair. But seriously tho, you should really try to listen to everything in order. Or at least watch the movie, it's amazing too, although somewhat different than the musical, especially in JD's characterization. At least, you'd have the ... Biggest part of the plot. Plus, young Winona Ryder as Veronica. Always a treat to see her.
IMO listening to things like this in order would drastically negatively change the way I make the content. When I've done videos on long pieces of media before, it's been grueling haha. @@MathewMcKenna Yeah, I can see that. It's just, reactors doing that always makes me feel like they're too busy being confused about what's happening to actually listen to the lyrics or the story, you know ? Not just the music aspect, but BOTH because musicaks tell a story and considering how much I love Heathers, it's really frustrating to see you not being able to properly enjoy all it has to offer. But again, I understand your stance. It's your channel, it's you doing things like you feel like, and I respect that. Plus, people still love watching you, and so do I really, it's just the nerves getting to me. 😅 I apologize if I seemed insensitive, or disrespectful, it really wasn't my intention.
Context behind our love is God and maybe movie spoilers: (Also trigger warning for suicide and death!) JD told Veronica that they were putting ich lüge (I think that’s how you spell it) bullets in the guns and shoot them, saying they were a powerful tranquilizar from ww2, in reality Ich lüge is supposed to mean “I’m lying”, she just didn’t understand what it meant. Previously, (in the movie at least) Heather Mc and Veronica were on a double date with them and one of them were trying to get with her, she said no, and the next day they spread a rumor that they had a “sword fight in her mouth”. That made her upset, so, JD made up a plan to ‘humiliate them’ but instead they killed them and made it look like they committed suicide. Hope that helps a bit
Fun fact, this song came out of a line from the original 1989 movie with Christian Slater and Winona Ryder. A lot of the dialogue is lifted from the movie.
Watching your reactions made me realize just how much the physical context helps portray the message of most of these songs way better than just the audio.
Fight for me is the first moment she sees JD. So yeah...it's one of the beginning songs...one of my faves tbh. It's great. But yes...PLEASE listen to it in order at some point. Things will make MUCH more sense.
At the end of Our Love is God, when Veronica joins in the song again, she looks pretty nervous (probably not wanting to upset the obsessive dude with a loaded gun) After the song, JD tries to kiss her and she runs away. Obviously can't blame you for not realizing that, since it's a completely visual aspect. Good video :)
Some context to fill in your confusion: Regarding them saying Kurt&Ram are gay, this musical is set in the 80s, so yes that would probably ruin their lives, much more homophobic time Like you said you noticed in your editing, Veronica was surprised Kurt&Ram died because JD told her they were fake bullets, she was assuming they were essentially tranquilizing them Personally I always interpreted Veronica joining back in at the end of Our Love is God as her being scared - she's in too deep and now is too scared to leave Fight for Me takes place very early in the musical, before JD's backstory song, he was a new student who got into a fight with Kurt&Ram in the cafeteria (in the movie he pulls out a gun and shoots blanks) and this is the first time Veronica sees him, so she doesn't know his name but it sets up her interest in him and ties it to her motivation of wanting protection
Bro I swear you are a magician, j just rewatched ur heathers videos two days ago getting me back into heathers after 5 months and now you post this 😵💫 love you!!!
The “they’ll be laughing stocks” line in the first song is kinda multilayered? And yes, it shows the times. People at the time weren’t accepting of gay people. The “they’ll be laughing stocks” is both because people will be laughing at ‘the gays that couldn’t take the reality of the world’ and, since J.D said that they wouldn’t be actually killed and would just be knocked out (though, he’s lying of course), that they failed to take their own lives (which would either be a show of weakness or stupidity)
context for every song you've reacted to so far (included the names of the songs you haven't listened to, though tried to not provide context for those) Note that Heather's takes place in the late 1980's (i believe 1989 specifically), hinch the homophobia 1) Beautiful: Veronica, our main character, intruduces us to the cast. Youy have Ram and Kurt, two school bullies, Martha, her childhood best friend, and the Heathers, the popular girls. Veronica wishes to sit with them for one day, in the hopes of making others think she's "popular enough" to net be bothered. However, the Heathers decide she can be useful to them, and she becomes part of the group. 2) Candy store: Heather Chandler (heather in red), has heard about a party Ram's throwing. She wants Veronica to forge an invetation note and give it to Martha. The Heathers are aware of the fact that Martha has a crush on Ram, and they want to play a prank on her. 3) Fight for me: Veronica accidentally walks in on Jeason Dean (the new kid, who no one knows at this point) getting into a fight with Kurt and Ram, and he manages to beat them. Veronica gets a crush on him thx to this event. 4) Freeze your brain: Veronica and Jason Dean meet at the local 7/11 when she's on her way to get some last minute stuff for the party. She finds out about JD's past, as his mother had died, and his father is quite unloving/abusive. It's also clear he handles with some kind of depression 5) Big Fun: This is the party song, Martha has fallen for the trap set up by the Heathers, not only was her heart broken by her crush that night, but she was also nearly publicly humiliated. However, Veronica took the blow, and in her drunken state, accidently vomited on Heather Chandler 6) Dead girl walking: Afraid of what the heathers will do now, she left the party. In her drunken state, she goes to "visit" JD, the two have a fun night, and are now an official thing. 7) The Me inside of me: After Veronica's fun night, JD convinces her to make it up to Chandler. Chandler, having a hangover, tells Veronica she might think about it if she is given an anti-hangover brew. JD however shitches it up with draincleaner, and Heather dies. This song is the follow up to that, Veronica writes a forged suicide note in order to hide the murder (under JD's command), and the two get away with it. Despite being dead, Heather rises even more in popularity due to what happened. Note that while Heather does sing, she just sings along the things Veronica wrote. Though veronica and heather do interact, it's more so Veronica's guilt coming through in a projection of Heather 8) Blue 9) Our love is god: For this one you really need to context of Blue, but basically, something happened involving Veronica, Kurt and Ram, and Veronica was extrremely sad bc of this. JD promises he will make things better, and convinces her to call Kurt and Ram for some yk, things yt won't be happy with. JD tells her he's gonna use "ich lüge" bullets (Ich Lüge is german for "i lie" in case anyone didn't know this) to be tranc them, as some kind of revenge. Veronica believes him, and the two end up killing Kurt and Ram, much to Veronica's disgust. As for why the two were singing in the end, in the musical, JD goes to stand behind her and pushes the gun into her back while holding her. Forcing Veronica to sing along, forcing her to "admit she loves him too" 10) Dead gay son 11) Seventeen: Due to JD's unstable nature, and his tendencies to commit murder whenever someone's awful to him or someone dear to him, he and Veronica have a tense moment. Though Veronica still has hope that the two could live a healthy, non crime filled, life with him. She tries to change his view, saying him that she still loves him, despite evrything, but that what he's doing must stop. 12) Shine a light: So, Heather Chandler, Kurt and Ram have all been murdered at this point, though their murders have each been disguised as suicides. One of the teachers (same one from Me inside of me, known as Miss Flaming) manages to convince the school to have a moment with all the students to reflect on the past events. She wishes no more suicides to happen, and encourages the kids to let their troubles out. After the song ends, Heather McNamara (heather in yellow) comes foreward, going into the song "Lifeboat" 13) Lifeboat 14) Shine a light (reprise): for this one you need Lifeboat's context, but simply put, McNamara admitted to being depressed and suicidal. And the other kids made fun of her, most notibly, Heather Duke (heather in green). This causes McNamara to try and kill herself for real, until Veronica stops her right after the song ends. 15) Kindergarten boyfriend 16) Yo girl 17) Meant to be yours: By this point, JD and Veronica officially are no more. However, in JD's obsession and crawy state of mind, he believes that society (as well as his school) is to blame for them breaking up. And thinks that if he can do something about that (aka, blowing up the school), she will see that they should stay together. Veronica fakes her own suicide at the end of the song in order to get him to leave her alone. 18)Dead girl walking (reprise): Veronica decides to put an end to all of this, and goes looking for JD, in order to stop him. She at first tries to convince him to stop through words, but when that doesn't work, it turns into a fight. However, he has a gun with him, Veronica manages to get a hold of the gun, and in their struggle, it goes off on accident, shooting JD in the side. 19) I am damaged 20) Seventeen (reprise)
Hey! I love this reaction series, and I wanted to let you know, there's a song between shine a light and shine a light reprise! (Only one) It's called the Littlest Lifeboat and its my favorite song from heather's honestly, and it will make you cry.
“Plant our garden here” they were in a cemetery. Their garden is of corpses Veronica wasn’t saying our love is god at the end. She was saying our love is gone.
I played Ms. Fleming in a production of Heathers and doing Shine A Light and Me Inside of Me was so fun! In Shine A Light, each night i got to single someone out someone in the audience to be my Steve and everyone shined flashlights on him like a spotlight while i ranted about faking it 😂
(I know this is late) but you were in a production of it?? Like a professional one? Because I've honestly not heard of any community theaters or anything doing a production of it. Not really sure why, because I would assume since it's an off-broadway show and hasn't been running for a while now that it would be legal to do so, but I'm not sure
3:50 I was a sophomore in highschool when this movie came out '89 and I promise you the biggest insult you could throw at someone is to say they were gay. Everyone who was not straight was in the closet waiting for college. And I can say the punk/goth kids (us) had no love for the jocks/cheerleaders (them). We loved this movie though.
If your interested in a musical with really good songs I’d definitely recommend hadestown. It’s a retelling of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice in a sort of modern folk music vibe. It’s amazing you’ll love it
There's going to be a pro-shot of the musical released next month, would be cool if you reacted to it! (but also a reaction to the og off broadway would be cool too)
For a bit of context: 1. At the end of Our Love is God, Veronica’s joining in with JD more out of fear than enjoyment. 2. A fun fact about the “I’m ending my affair” line: on stage, Ms. Fleming actually says that to a random male audience member. A fun bit of breaking the fourth wall humor! (I agree that she probably shouldn’t have said all of that in front of her students though) 3. It’s kind of implied that Heather McNamara is hallucinating Heather Duke in “Shine a Light Reprise”. Also the fact that Heather Duke’s songs in the original Broadway production are all reprises appears to be a subtle jokey nod to the fact that she’s stated to have “no discernible personality” (though the West End production gave her an AMAZING song called “Never Shut Up Again”, which I highly recommend you check out!) 4. The video maker goofed on Me Inside of Me and attributed lyrics that were originally sung by Heather’s ghost to Ms. Fleming.
Please note, there's an error in the lyric video of "The Me Inside Of Me". The lines "Holy crap, this is awesome!", "Jesus Christ!" and "I'm bigger than John Lennon!" aren't said by Ms. Fleming but by H. Chandler's ghost who, being H. Chandler, loves all the attention she's getting despite her being dead.
Oooo I love your content!! I didn't know you did Heather's Have you seen the live versions of the songs before? Personally, I think the live versions bring in a lot more character into the music and it's super fun and enjoyable, even if you aren't actually watching them full in chronological order
You GOTTA listen to I say no, it was added later on in the west end production and it is a banger, Veronica finally stands up for herself like the girlboss she deserves to be
I absolutely love your content. Please finish the Heathers series. There's a few more songs called 'blue', 'blue reprise', 'dead gay son', 'kindergarten boyfriend', 'lifeboat' and 'seventeen reprise'. Kindergarten Boyfriend is actually one of my favorite songs from the musical and I think you're gonna love her voice especially
Right??! I was so looking forward to seeing his reaction to MDGS!! Also the West End version has exclusive songs: “You’re welcome” instead of blue (imo much better lmao) and “Never Shut up Again” which is a Heather D solo!
Perfect timing! I've been getting back to listening to Heathers again after a while and my god I've kinda forgotten how deranged the songs are. I really do love it
@@SketchyDoodles omg, that's awsome, as someone who's never been able to go to broadway, and no Heathers prefermances were ever given anywhere near where i live, i've never been able to properly see it other then, yk, the non-legal pirated versions with shit quality. I'd do fucking anything for an official recording of this musical XD.
if you do react to the full musical, i’d love to see you react to the west end version!! there’s a few added songs that aren’t in the original, such as ‘i say no’, ‘you’re welcome’ and ‘never shut up again’! plus the actor who plays jd is absolutely phenomenal and adds so much depth to the character
The end of Our Love is God finishes with Veronica realizing the severity of the situation and how she's been played. Idk about the Broadway version, but the West End version has JD embracing her essentially with a gun to her, sort of threatening. Their last note used to be in harmony, but the reprise goes up a half step to show Veronica is no longer on his level
The person who was Veronica in that version is Barret Wilber Weed (not sure if that's spelled right) and she is awesome. She was also in Mean Girls the Musical as Janice Ian!
If you want another musical to react to I heavily suggest Ride the Cyclone it's so good. It's not super well known but the music absolutely slaps. I'd recommend the songs; What the World Needs, Noel's Lament, The Ballad of Jane Doe, Talia, and Space Age Bachelor Man. :))
I'm so hyped for the Heathers proshot which is meant to air on September 16th (a day before my birthday)!! I think it's coming out on a programe in the US and Canada, but since I don't live there I hope I can find it online. Anyways, it would be cool if you could react to that someday :)
Hiii, a year later! (I know, I'm totally late 😂) you should really do more Heather reacts, because there's another heather musical with additional songs you absolutely must listen to!!🤩 -"My dead gay son" -"I am damaged" -"Yo girl" -"Kindergarten boyfriend" -"I say no" -"Life boat" -"Never shut up again" -"You're welcome" -"Seventeen (reprise)"
I’m pretty sure at the end of “our love is god” Veronica is actually saying “our love is gone” because this is the point she finally realizes just how messed in the head JD actually is and that she can’t just talk him out of the crazy
I have a suggestion! Can you please listen to a musical called 36 Questions? It's a podcast musical so there are no visuals. It's one of those underrated musicals. It's about a couple trying to save their marriage from the brink of divorce using the 36 questions which is supposedly designed to make strangers fall in love.
Since you asked: yes, I for once would love to see you react to the full musical in order :3 (There are also some REALLY great animatics for the songs, if you don't want to watch a fan recording of the actual musical but still want something visual)
If you’re interested, the full musical is uploaded on RUclips. The movie is also uploaded. I highly recommend you check them both out, they’re amazing. It would also add context to the songs, so you’ll actually understand what happened (after you’ve finished all the songs ofc, love seeing how confused you get lmao😭).
It would be so cool for you to watch the whole musical to see what you were right and wrong about when listening to the songs. There's a version with Carrie Hope Fletcher and Jamie Muscato on youtube for sure but a pro shot is being released soon too (may be a while until you can see it though as it's being released in America first).
Hi, I loved your reaction! You should really listen to "I say no" it's another song from Heathers that was added in the west end production aka wasn't in the original broadway album.
I think you should react to Stupendium. I'm sure you will enjoy his songs. Some of his best songs are ''The Toybox, Room For Improvement, And So We Fall and Don't Let The Bellhops Bite. He Makes Mostly Live Action Songs About Games. Hope you enjoy :)
Context for Fight For Me: The song is about JD like Veronica said, but this was just after they first met, but he didn't say what his name was at the time. He only finally told her when they ran into each other at Seven-Eleven a bit later. Then she broke into his house that same night...uh, early morning.
Tbf, the murder of heather chandler was accidental. JD suggested it but Veronica said no, then she accidentally picked up the wrong drink to take to heather
fun fact!! the person who played veronica in this rendition of heathers was Barret Wilburt Weed, the same person who played Janis in the Mean Girls musical's original cast!!
If you watch it, at the end when she joins in again JD is being incredibly threatening, all but pointing the gun at her until she joins in. Also in every version Ive seen l, Heather C is the one who sings 'this is awesome ' and 'im bigger than John Lennon' not Mrs Fleming in The Me inside of Me
by the way in “fight for me” it is a song that plays earlier in the musical and she is singing to JD , and the reason she says “ no-name kid” this was when she didn’t know his name
I'm happy you finally covered The Me inside of Me that is ridicolously good. There are three songs left that would use a reaction from this musical, cause they're the only one performed by these characters. - "Kindergarden Boyfriend" by Martha, extremly sweet - "I Love my dead gay son" by the Dads of Kurt and Ram, wacky as it can be, and with great instrumental - "Blue" by Kurt and Ram... which... well... you'll see it
I will point out that when Veronica starts singing "Our Love Is God" again at the end after the murders, her tone is stressed and frightened because JD's singing is becoming threatening because he expects her to reciprocate, oblivious to the horror she is experiencing. Plus, he's still holding a gun he just shot people with while trying to get her to sing back to him. Basically, if she doesn't sing back, it's a toss up on whether or not the unstable murder obsessed with her might kill her as well if she rejects his show of love for her. Basic obsessive stalkerish toxic partner energy and danger.
In the "Our Love is God Song", after he shoots them and he sings The our love is god part repeatedly...she's freaked out and he literally has his arms wrapped around her with the gun in her face. He gets more aggressive as he sings the line and she doesn't echo it. Finally, out of fear she sings it back at him. I love the final discordant note. They were so beautiful when they were in harmony and it shows the how they were so not on the same page
You should listen to Bo en, their the person who originally made "My Time" ("Close your eyes" song from the Omori Soundtrack), and I recommend listening to Pale Machine Album If you haven't yet!
Also in The Me Inside Of Me the one who was supposed to saying holy crap this is awesome is Heather Chandler! Not Ms. Fleming, the person probably got the lyrics a bit wrong. Basically Heathers is saying that because she realizes even though she's dead she's still popular. And that fills her ego.
i would love to see you to watch the musical in order! there's a lot of great choreography and blocking (especially in Fight For Me) that really complements the music
Also let me just say, the ending of Our Love Is God is (in my opinion) much better WATCHED than listened to. The way the actress looks and is desperately belting out the lyrics makes it almost sound like she’s being forced to say it-
I replied to a comment about listening to the songs in order with this, in case you're curious why I opt to listen to things out of order:

You should listen to songs from the rocky horror
Once you've reacted to most/all of the songs, I'm all for you listening to them in order
Here are some things to keep in mind though:
-"Mr No-Name-Kid" is JD, she's calling him that because he's a "noone" in their school
-All of the Heathers are students, and Heather Chandler dies literally seconds before me inside of me due to JD poisoning her (it's her ghost singing from here on, only Veronica can see/hear her)
-Kindergarten boyfriend is Martha Dunnstock's suicide note. she attempts to kill herself due to all of the bullying she gets because of her weight (being called martha dumptruck- see beautiful) and behaviour (what Ram says to her in big fun)
-The production takes place in 1989. Being gay was something to make fun of back then. JD fakes a suicide note from Kurt and Ram saying they killed themselves because the world wouldn't accept them being gay. This is what prompts singing my dead gay son at their funeral
Ey, it’s totally okay to watch things out of order if you want to.

As for the situation with the “gay forbidden love” of Kurt and Ram, the movie this was based on is from 1989. So it was a little bit less accepted back then….

Cop 2: Does this answer you question? * pulls a mineral water bottle out of their bag *
Cop 1: Oh man, they were fxgs
That's a really "backwoods town in Ohio in 1989" behavior
First song's context:
Kurt and Ram (the dude's who got sh0t) tried to date r@p3 Veronica, and after she successfully got away without being harmed, they started a rumor that she had had a threesome with them. This song was basically revenge.
Second song's context:
Veronica and JD had portrayed all the deaths they caused as su1c1d3s, so, Ms. Fleming (singer) decided to hold an assembly to tell the students that they had people to go to if they were feeling su1c1d@l, and that they weren't alone.
Third song's context:
After Shine a Light, Ms.
Fourth song's context:
You already know this is right after Veronica did a murder.

And if you know the context, you'll notice her singing actually does sound terrified.
I could’ve sworn i heard/seen in lyrics before at the end she started saying our love is gone instead of our love is god
I always thought it was because they failed to kill themselves.
In the end of “Our love is god” in the musical, JD is holding his arms around Veronica while Veronica’s singing and facial features becomes progressively frightened while singing those last lines.
Not sure if these were the exact lyrics, but in the our love is god, JD refers to the bullets as "ichluege bullets", which means "im lying" in german!

How much you wanna bet you're confused because you're not listening it all in order ? 😭
That is basically the main thing, plus the short scenes between songs
most of it wasn't even that lmao just absolute confused horror at me inside of me
@@MathewMcKenna Yeah, that's fair.
Not sure why I decided to send you an essay, but was just a thought provoking comment :)
I apologize if I seemed insensitive, or disrespectful, it really wasn't my intention.
Context behind our love is God and maybe movie spoilers:
(Also trigger warning for suicide and death!)
JD told Veronica that they were putting ich lüge (I think that’s how you spell it) bullets in the guns and shoot them, saying they were a powerful tranquilizar from ww2, in reality Ich lüge is supposed to mean “I’m lying”, she just didn’t understand what it meant.
If you ever want to listen to more musicals, especially more that are movie based, I highly recommend The Lightning Thief, Mean Girls, and Beetlejuice
Yes, Mean Girls PLEASE
Definitely The Lightning Thief! 😍
Lighting thief it's not movie based tho, it's based on the books
Some context to fill in your confusion:
Regarding them saying Kurt&Ram are gay, this musical is set in the 80s, so yes that would probably ruin their lives, much more homophobic time
Like you said you noticed in your editing, Veronica was surprised Kurt&Ram died because JD told her they were fake bullets, she was assuming they were essentially tranquilizing them
Personally I always interpreted Veronica joining back in at the end of Our Love is God as her being scared - she's in too deep and now is too scared to leave
Fight for Me takes place very early in the musical, before JD's backstory song, he was a new student who got into a fight with Kurt&Ram in the cafeteria (in the movie he pulls out a gun and shoots blanks) and this is the first time Veronica sees him, so she doesn't know his name but it sets up her interest in him and ties it to her motivation of wanting protection

I wonder if anyone told him Veronica can see ghosts.
FINALLY Someone who knows it was because they "failed" to kts 😭😭
1989 movie: depressing with a bit of humor.
Musical adaptation: 💃
context for every song you've reacted to so far (included the names of the songs you haven't listened to, though tried to not provide context for those)
Note that Heather's takes place in the late 1980's (i believe 1989 specifically), hinch the homophobia
1) Beautiful: Veronica, our main character, intruduces us to the cast.
It's also clear he handles with some kind of depression
5) Big Fun: This is the party song, Martha has fallen for the trap set up by the Heathers, not only was her heart broken by her crush that night, but she was also nearly publicly humiliated. However, Veronica took the blow, and in her drunken state, accidently vomited on Heather Chandler
6) Dead girl walking: Afraid of what the heathers will do now, she left the party.
Though veronica and heather do interact, it's more so Veronica's guilt coming through in a projection of Heather
8) Blue
9) Our love is god: For this one you really need to context of Blue, but basically, something happened involving Veronica, Kurt and Ram, and Veronica was extrremely sad bc of this. Forcing Veronica to sing along, forcing her to "admit she loves him too"
10) Dead gay son
11) Seventeen: Due to JD's unstable nature, and his tendencies to commit murder whenever someone's awful to him or someone dear to him, he and Veronica have a tense moment.
After the song ends, Heather McNamara (heather in yellow) comes foreward, going into the song "Lifeboat"
13) Lifeboat
14) Shine a light (reprise): for this one you need Lifeboat's context, but simply put, McNamara admitted to being depressed and suicidal. And the other kids made fun of her, most notibly, Heather Duke (heather in green). This causes McNamara to try and kill herself for real, until Veronica stops her right after the song ends.
15) Kindergarten boyfriend
16) Yo girl
17) Meant to be yours: By this point, JD and Veronica officially are no more.
19) I am damaged
20) Seventeen (reprise)
Judging by the songs that are missing, the next video is going to be a roller-coaster.

REAL
If your interested in a musical with really good songs I’d definitely recommend hadestown. It’s a retelling of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice in a sort of modern folk music vibe. It’s amazing you’ll love it
There's going to be a pro-shot of the musical released next month, would be cool if you reacted to it! (but also a reaction to the og off broadway would be cool too)
For a bit of context:
(I agree that she probably shouldn’t have said all of that in front of her students though)
3. It’s kind of implied that Heather McNamara is hallucinating Heather Duke in “Shine a Light Reprise”. Also the fact that Heather Duke’s songs in the original Broadway production are all reprises appears to be a subtle jokey nod to the fact that she’s stated to have “no discernible personality” (though the West End production gave her an AMAZING song called “Never Shut Up Again”, which I highly recommend you check out!)
I didn't know you did Heather's
Have you seen the live versions of the songs before? Personally, I think the live versions bring in a lot more character into the music and it's super fun and enjoyable, even if you aren't actually watching them full in chronological order
You GOTTA listen to I say no, it was added later on in the west end production and it is a banger, Veronica finally stands up for herself like the girlboss she deserves to be
I absolutely love your content. Please finish the Heathers series. It was not good. Love the 89 movie and Off Broadway cast but the singing in the Roku channel was horrible. JD was super whiny in this version.
if you do react to the full musical, i’d love to see you react to the west end version!! there’s a few added songs that aren’t in the original, such as ‘i say no’, ‘you’re welcome’ and ‘never shut up again’! plus the actor who plays jd is absolutely phenomenal and adds so much depth to the character
Alternative title : Mathew being in love with Barrett voice for three videos straight
7:19 that ‘turn’ is called shine a light reprise
The person who was Veronica in that version is Barret Wilber Weed (not sure if that's spelled right) and she is awesome. She was also in Mean Girls the Musical as Janice Ian!

You really should do Kindergarten Boyfriend for Martha, such a beautiful song and she’s the only unflawed/unproblematic character in the show.
"Is there a single good person in this musical?"
Martha.
To answer your question of ‘are there any good people in this musical?’ Yes, Martha. We must protect her.
That last song happens in the beginning! She didn't know JD then and actually caught sight of him in the middle of a fight :)
YES HEATHERS!!! love you Matthew!

You should really listen to "I say no" it's another song from Heathers that was added in the west end production aka wasn't in the original broadway album.
actually it wasn’t added I have the off broadway script it was in it but they replaced it last moment I THINK
You gotta watch the full musical! As well as the full Six the Musical!
The same actress for Veronica did AMAZING in Mean Girls Musical. She wasn’t the main character but every song she sings in is incredible :)
I beg of you please please PLEASE watch the whole thing!!
I LOVE watching other people react to things I love! Thank you!!
you need to finish this series!
Whenever im sad i just watch all your videos over and over again 😟
I love seeing this video pop up after I saw Heathers last night
Tbf, the murder of heather chandler was accidental. JD suggested it but Veronica said no, then she accidentally picked up the wrong drink to take to heather
You should we react to Beetlejuice: the musical! 😁
fun fact!! the person who played veronica in this rendition of heathers was Barret Wilburt Weed, the same person who played Janis in the Mean Girls musical's original cast!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE we NEED a reaction video to the whole musical!!!
Yay! I have been waiting anxiously for your next Heathers reaction videos and I have almost given up. Thankfully you have came the right time! :D
If you watch it, at the end when she joins in again JD is being incredibly threatening, all but pointing the gun at her until she joins in.
Also in every version Ive seen l, Heather C is the one who sings 'this is awesome ' and 'im bigger than John Lennon' not Mrs Fleming in The Me inside of Me
I literally was just listening to Heathers, I check my notifications and see this,
Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
So in Fight For Me Veronica is singing to JD but she doesn’t know his name yet because they hadn’t introduced themselves or talked yet at that point
Yes!!!! PLEASE WATCH OR LISTEN TO ALL OF THEM IN ORDER!!!!
by the way in “fight for me” it is a song that plays earlier in the musical and she is singing to JD , and the reason she says “ no-name kid” this was when she didn’t know his name
I'm happy you finally covered The Me inside of Me that is ridicolously good.
There are three songs left that would use a reaction from this musical, cause they're the only one performed by these characters.
- "Kindergarden Boyfriend" by Martha, extremly sweet
- "I Love my dead gay son" by the Dads of Kurt and Ram, wacky as it can be, and with great instrumental
- "Blue" by Kurt and Ram... which... well... you'll see it
i’ve never clicked on a video so fast,, so excited to see your reaction !!
I really hope you end up doing the last few songs that are in the musical because Blue always makes me laugh and makes me uncomfortable 😭
I love heathers the movie and musical sm
As someone who played Heather Duke, your reaction to shine a light reprise was fun 😃
A pro shot of the West End version of this musical is coming out in September, maybe you could react to it :) (it also has a few additional songs)
You should listen to Bo en, their the person who originally made "My Time" ("Close your eyes" song from the Omori Soundtrack), and I recommend listening to Pale Machine Album If you haven't yet!
There should be a part 4 it’s been over a year since part 3
I just saw Heathers today. It’s been my favorite for like 5 years. It was so good.
Also in The Me Inside Of Me the one who was supposed to saying holy crap this is awesome is Heather Chandler! Not Ms. Fleming, the person probably got the lyrics a bit wrong. Basically Heathers is saying that because she realizes even though she's dead she's still popular. And that fills her ego.
since the filmed version is finally out it would be fun to see Mathew watch it
Ayyyyy another one! On a side note would also highly recommend Beetlejuice: The Musical as well
i would love to see you to watch the musical in order! there's a lot of great choreography and blocking (especially in Fight For Me) that really complements the music
I WAS WAITING FOR IT
Also let me just say, the ending of Our Love Is God is (in my opinion) much better WATCHED than listened to. The way the actress looks and is desperately belting out the lyrics makes it almost sound like she’s being forced to say it-
I believe the correct lyric in "Our Love Is God" is "Our love is gone" when Veronica starts singing with J.D. again.
