  • Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Glen Ligon, from the "History" episode in Season 6 of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"History" premiered in April 2012 on PBS.
A retrospective of artist Glenn Ligon’s work at the Whitney Museum provides a backdrop for his personal history growing up in New York, as well as for the disparate influences that contribute to his mature work-from DeKooning, to children’s coloring books of the 1970’s, to classics of American literature by writers such as Gertrude Stein or Zora Neale Hurston.

Such an interesting artist. His mother, with her unlimited book budget, sounds like a very interesting person as well.

What an inspiration! I don't think I've ever heard of Glen or seen his work. But I am a artist and love the written word and beautiful thoughts and ideas that I've desired to include in my work. This is synchronicity. Glen you have given me a view, a way into a new phase of expression I was seeking. Brilliant! Your work is fantastic.

feel this resonance - artmaking as a way to synthesize what we are reading is such a curious path forward - artmaking as knowledge production too
this is what is coming to me from this
