    You should explore the art movies of Smita Patil, Om Puri, Anupam Kher, and Naseeruddin Shah from the 80s. Those movies were referred to as art cinema/movies/film back then to differentiate from commercial cinema, and rightly so at the time, because the acting was nothing short of art and the movies did little to be commercially successful.

    Sometimes people wants to see filmy characters to be little more emotional or expressive than a normal person because that style will stay with them it becomes a signature of that ACTOR (eg: SHAHRUKH KHAN) Believability You need when it is a real life character driven movies if you act like that in a commercial film that will be called as flat acting. So we can't measure all units with same metrics.

    • @shvenanaij
      @shvenanaij 3 года назад +5

      Yeah but commercial films are also driven by real life characters, it's not like that they use aliens as their main protagonist. The difference is the depth in the characters and overall character development. Commercial films, more often than not, have very little depth to their characters and everything is clearly defined. This is a good person and this is a bad person. They think that audiences are dumb to get their characters' nuances. And before you say that it's a commercial film not a realistic film, I wanna say that commercial films also can have great characters and the best example of that is Marvel movies. These movies are as mainstream as you can get but still Iron Man was a character with a lot of depth and especially in the later Russo Brother movies and they showed that if you can develop a character well with all it's nuances, audiences are gonna love it. Ofcourse this all depends on bad writing which quite a lot of SRK's movies have. And even Anubhav Sinha once said that he can do so much more but ultimately all of the films he has done are HIS choices. He selected the bad written scripts. He can't do much with these "HERO" characters and his signature style only serves one purpose which is to make his fans happy instead of serving the story. And a good example is Ranbir in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. He never serves to his fans despite the film being very commercial and very melodramatic. You don't do it for the "PEOPLE" you do it for the audience. And it's okay if some actors wanna do it but that doesn't make them great actors. Simple as that.

      @djsoh6041 3 года назад +6

      Very well said. This video that they reacted to is simply useless for Indian setup. I go to the show to watch Ranveer and have a good time for 2-3 hours. And I am sure there are many many in India who are in the same boat. For me movies is not academics. Its entertainment. Period.

      Thing is it's changing and doesn't have to remain same. Change is only constant. There was Dilip Kumar remember,he had these traits of realistic acting back then times changed stylized cinema was name of the game,so people who would do stylized dialogue delivery spurting a few lines became stars now times have again changed it looks as though realistic acting is in forefront with Netflix and prime being driving force of this change. This change can be seen two fold,that audience got tired of stylized cinema is one reason another is these platforms don't like star system,they want to create product instead which would be judged based on merit of its own not by which star works in it. Therefore you see these fan armies which were propped up by these stars being at war with this new enthusiastic new cinema armies over on twitter. It's good for indian cinema that we are finally getting away from star system but fear could be we may become Hollywood. I mean what kept apart hindi film industry away from Hollywood are these song and dance routines and over the top ness and starsystem.

    im sorry but this video was a little harsh on both srk and aamir. the style of their acting in 2000s was directly related to what indian audience demanded - streched and theatreical . people are dramatic here and they want to see the exact emotions on the screen. back then realistic actors were given a tag of 'artsy actors' while entertainers were given star tags . eg- in swades srk was freaking brilliant but it was a disaster on box office and his acting was really underappreciated . it became a cult after many years . however if you look after 2006-2007 thats where real acting was starting to showcase . just after that srk did chak de india with one of his best performances and was hugely appreciated and then my name is khan . there was much more grounded sense of performance by amir in talash and dhobhi ghaat . now recently the scale of films have took a turn. from being over the top and dramatic, they are now set up in small towns with relatable characters . but there is one important thing-
    .
    acting in india or especially in hindi cinema is based on the pitch of the film itself . varun dhawan will be over the top in humpty or badrinath but much more believable
    in badlapur or october . however both pitch works because humpty is entertaining and so is badlapur . but if a script is bad ( coolie no 1 for eg) the pitch looks cringey itself. i know many people will bash me here for saying this but nawaz was very much over the top in freaky ali . his comic timing was very off but i dont blame him , its the pitch the film is going for . film was bad though. on the other hand his little comic scenes in gow or badlapur are brilliant .
    .
    many times it also depends on the director too. i mean for gods sake if ram madhvani can make sonam kapoor act in neerja then , oh boy, anything can happen.

      @@abhishekpareek23 true! I'm not a big fan of Salman's acting and I'm not blind to not see that he can overact a lot, but he has some talent there if the director was able to make him do such a good job. So I'm never really hate on anyone if that person can do something that is amazing. Also my opinion changes with time, so I'm trying not to be so judging. I learnt that on Katrina Kaof and Varun Dhawan. I was hating Katrina quite a lot and I always taught Varun was average. But then I watched some of their newer work and they can be quite incredible. It depends on many circumstances.
      Also I know SRK have some mannerism that he uses sometimes too much. But he also can totally dissappear into character which some actors won't be able to do. Like Darr, my name is khan or fan. Also he works so hard with so many injuries he had in his life. Watching behind a scenes of some of his action movies really made me appreciate him more. Also Aamir tends to overact also, but I always loved him, cause at the time most of big, dramatic movies were mega popular at the time. And well, it's for sure hard for those actors suddenly learn that now they have to change their style of acting.

He also is clearly prejudiced towards actors who are considered greats (and of course they are greats), but he picks on popular stars as though he's saying a star can't be a good actor. Some big stars have done some very good work, and some extremely mediocre work, depends on the merit of the film and the director at the helm. This video is a classic example of Confirmation Bias.

      preach, exactly. i am well aware that some big stars "overacted" a lot in some of the movies. but, 90s stars especially usually were taught that. public loved it. kal ho naa ho, k3g, karan arjun, har dil jo pyar karega and much more were full of that kinda style. but it was the era and also directors. and everyone was into it. it doesn't mean that those actors can't do an incredible job when the script and movie requires it. i'm not trying to hate on anyone for thinking otherwise, cause everybody should be allowed to share their opinion, so i'm just sharing mine. i can clearly see the difference between like some big stars and some people who may be much better actors, but sometimes not so perfect performance can get you even more

    Hi there. The actress Sadhana was one of the most skilled actresses ever.
    To see a glimpse of her skill, pls watch the following songs in sequence.
    1) Bahut Shukriya Badi Meherbani - from the Film - Ek Musafir Ek Hasina.
    2) Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar Ke Dil Abhi Bhara Nahi - from the Film - Hum Dono
    3) Tuzhe Jeevan Ki Dor Se Bandh Liya Hai - from the Film - Asli Naqli
    4) Tera Mera Pyar Amar - from the Film Asli Naqli
    5) Jhumka Gira Re Bareli Ke Bazzar Mein - from the film - Mera Saaya.
    In the first song she portrays a fifteen or sixteen year old girl who is infatuated with the Hero. She display childish traits and has minimal maturity.
    In the second song she portrays a 18-19 year old girl who is in love (not infatuated) with the guy and surely depicts much greater maturity than the girl in first song. Nevertheless she still has some hint of childishness in her.
    In the third song she portrays a lady about 21-22 who is not just in love but has made up her mind that the guy is going to be her life partner. She also shows the maturity in her to even go against the will of her family if needed to be with the guy which definitely was not evident in the previous two songs.
    In the fourth song she portrays a 23-24 year old lady who not only has chosen her life partner but also most probably going to marry him shortly. She displays her happiness in the song by smiling and also her dreaminess by never once looking into the camera during the entire shoot of the song.
    In the last song she actually portrays a street artist who only cares about money and has very low moral standards.
    When you see the 4th song and then the fifth one the drastic change in her demeanor becomes quite evident.
    Pls do see and if possible react on it for experiencing the real finesse of acting.

    seriously, srk is capable of doing so much, but he is just stuck in his stardom loop. I loved swadesh and dil se, even chak de but he has not done a good movie in so many years. I completely agree with the evaluation on salman, varun, arjun etc- clearly garbage acting. And priyanka, ranveer etc. are actors who sell eccentricity as great acting, they are slightly above average at best. I mean, ranveer's always portraying the same emotion in different setting - be it typical delhi boy, a ruffian in ramleela, a struggling rapper in gully boy, or even khilji - they all seem to have the same ranveer-type energy. I think ranbir and shahid are way better than ranveer in the craft, although even they are sometimes caught up in the bollywood-bubble.
    Bollywood is just a lala land tryng to recreate the same success formula, in the 80s or 90s it was the action hero type movies with bachhan, deol etc. and crass slapstick comedy with govinda and others. In 2000s, it was the sappy, unrealistic, fairy-tale type, filthy rich-type love stories with srk, salman,saif, hrithik etc, barring very few gems from directors like mani ratnam, or so. It goes without saying that women in cinema till 2010 were largely just tools for men to look good, i.e. love interests.
    And now, although hindi films have progressed maybe a little bit with actors like irfaan (gone too soon), nawaz, manoj, rajkumar, vicky, ayushman, vikrant etc.. they've still got a long way to go. In terms of everything, script, acting, cinematography and the biggest of all ORIGINALITY (stop making re-makes please!!!!)

    • @saatsamunder15
      @saatsamunder15 3 года назад

      Granted, the mediocre movies get remembered over the years more often, but gems exist in every decade. If you watch enough Hindi movies you are apt to see one or two movies in every decade which are critically acclaimed as well as popular with the audience. To put it in simple words dig deep. If you think that women in Hindi cinema were props you need to watch movies from the 50s with Waheeda Rahman(and not just the overrated Guru Dutt ones). That woman could teach our current heroines a lot about sticking to her guns(She refused to change her name. She insisted on wearing only costumes she was comfortable in) and acting in sensible cinema(I don't mean just art cinema here). That said I like the direction Hindi films are taking these days.

      @shvenanaij 3 года назад +1

      @Blue Gender Aditya is not saying that you have to make great films to be a great actor. A great actor is the one who takes risks. Those risks don't have to pay off but just the act of taking them shows how much you wanna push the boundaries and how much you care about the art and craft of acting instead of choosing the same kind of generic films. Talent to make risky and daring choices is what makes you different from others who are just following the path laid out by someone else. People will go to every Brando film to see what he did in those films and probably he was one of the best things in those films.

    • @shvenanaij
      @shvenanaij 3 года назад

      @Blue Gender Movies are not made by the actor alone. Director is the captain and writer is the engine. And then sound designers, costume designers, production, cinematographer, editor and producers. So many factors are at play when you are making a film. What budget you are getting, how much time you are getting etc an actor is not responsible if a film goes wrong. What an actor is responsible for is the acting itself. Again the choices doesn't mean choosing films or characters, they also mean choosing acting techniques and how they are implemented. You are right at saying that choices are not enough to judge an actor's worth but you are wrong at saying that we should consider the final product. We should consider the performance and the choices and that's it. Believablity, vulnerability, unpredictability, ability to listen and use of body language and voice. All of this is in the hands of an actor and she and she alone is responsible for it. Her risky choices will help push the boundaries of her acting abilities and the boundaries of cinematic characters as well. But if the movie fails, it's okay because there is no art without risk. And SRK's risks are all calculated to include what he wants and what he thinks the audience wants and that's why those choices are bad because he is still stuck in fan servicing instead of serving the character and the story.

What a boring tepid world to have such a specific kind of acting. N about loud acting - most Indians are expressive slightly loud folks n our actors /actresses represent that side of the world. There was a time when serious cinema was viewed with scepticism and disdain (few appreciated them and only later did most come to realize its intrinsic value) We need all kinds of actors and most get to a better state than they were through trial n error (not many have their choice of movies because of their financial status and their place in the industry in their initial years n for some even later on). This kind of video is necessary to view in order to ascertain the kind of bias the makers have towards the film industry.

    Bollywood stars choose scripts in which character is on moral high ground,its their necessity. They think their image in real life will be based on what they show on reel life. Aamir is criminal on this,in his long illustrated career he hasn't done a character with dark shade not even a single role. Shahrukh well he had to do them initially as he was an outsider and salman well for him it doesn't matter because everytime he's on screen he's Salman Khan not the character he's playing.
    Actors being stuck in their crutches,it's so true for Shahrukh, Shahrukh was in front of his contemporaries in acting department,he could really emote. But as he got successful bollywood ruined him,he got stuck in his image and crutches. He still can pull off a performance of he can let go of his perceived stardom.

    Dude is an extremist in the world of acting and considers only a certain style of acting as great. I understand why he is an extremist in that sense but it's not plausible. Audience don't want only a particular kind of movie, they also want entertainment and escape from the reality. In such movies, actors acting all like real normal people will be boring. Of course, what he said about showing the image of society to society itself is a great responsibility of every actor that they are bound to but that image they portray and show should be understandable by the audience otherwise it is the actor's fault, no matter how great his acting skills are.

  • @ninadk30
    @ninadk30 3 года назад +14

    The video is actually very good but it has its fair share of biases. There are several points that highlight that.
    The selection of movies to make is points for example. He conveniently shows all the over the top SRK moments but fails to show scenes like in Swades.
    His comment about Ranveer using his eccentricities is negating his own point of actors trying to channel their own personalities in the character they are playing. Personally, I didnt like Ranveer's portrayal of Bajirao Peshwa. But he made it something of his own and I accepted it.
    The point he makes about actors and art having the responsibility to hold a mirror to the society is something I fundamentally disagree with. No one SHOULD have that responsibility. Societies dont function and change that way.
    All in all he makes good points but needs to be taken with a pinch of salt

    • @shvenanaij
      @shvenanaij 3 года назад +3

      I don't think he has biases. SRK has done great acting in Swades and Chak De India and Baazigar but you can count them on your fingers. Infact Vinit has made an entire video essay on Swades. It's on the channel you should check it out. But most SRK movies have over the top acting so you can't say that he is a great actor just because he did Swades because you are failing to recognise all the other movies like Jab Harry Met Sejal, Happy new year, Raees, Kal ho na ho, kabhi khushi kabhi gham, Don, Don 2 and so many others. His portfolio contains very little swades and a lot of fan service. And these are all the movies he has selected. Nobody has pushed him to do these films. So he his responsible for his own choices. And talking about Ranveer, if you seriously think that personality is how you behave in front of people than you need to understand that it's not how you behave but what you do. And you have seen Ranveer in front of cameras, it's not like you are his best friend and you know everything about him, everyone is pretending in front of cameras so you can't know what he is like in real life. Using his eccentricities for the character is wrong because it's not serving the story but it's serving his fans. Vinit is completely right about that point. And I see you also 'fundamentally' disagree with his point of actors holding the mirror upto the society. I don't understand on which fundamental do you disagree because he never said that this is how societies function. Although if you look at the history of art you will be surprised to know that how much society functions and change based on art. After all they say that society inspires the art and art inspires the society.

    • @shivamrai2807
      @shivamrai2807 3 года назад +2

      I do think that vineet isn't being bias. It's not about any actor's whole life performance. It's just he gave few of examples for the point he wants to convey. Having said that, everyone has their opinion. I personally think some of amitabh's performance were over the top while few are very brilliant. And I think same would be case for all the actors.

    • @ninadk30
      @ninadk30 3 года назад +1

      @@shvenanaij You have made some great points. I have watched all of Vinit's videos before. And I like the guy. I just disagree on a few things
      I am no big fan of any 'stars'. Just a disclaimer. But speaking of SRK, you are right to point out that he has very few Swades like films in his portfolio. He has made some pretty bad decisions. But it's not that he hasn't experimented. The public doesn't accept him in certain roles thus he tends to stick to a certain role and image. After all its a marketplace and he has to sell what people want to buy
      I don't have any disagreements with you on you comments on Ranveer Singh. I expressed my opinions in my earlier comment.
      On the society comment. I disagree with you. I believe society and art mirror in a very spontaneous way. No one 'has' to purposefully set out to change anything. As one person's version of a society can turn into a dystopia for someone else. Society functions on the balance of individual idiosyncrasies. Thus I don't feel anyone 'has' to something to change things for the better. I believe if we are true to our art or work and do our best in it, society gets influenced anyway. Bill gates has changed more lives with Microsoft than he has with his foundation but her didn't set out to change the world. He set out to create a software that everyone could use. Gutenberg press was not invented to democratise knowledge. It was invented to print and sell more bibles. The invention was good enough that the society rearranged around it organically.
      I believe you get my point. I am not against change but nobody 'has' to bear the entire responsibility.

      @@ninadk30 I think you have misunderstood what Vinit meant when he said that an actor should put the mirror upto the society. Because I don't think he meant that you have to create art to change society, I think he meant you have to create a piece of art which the audience can reflect upon, where they can see themselves. And now that you have explained your point, I understand that you and Vinit are saying the same thing where an artist should be true to her art so that audiences can relate or reflect or have a revelation about something. I hope that's what Vinit meant. If he didn't meant that then me and you are saying the same thing. About the SRK thing, I agree that he experimented but he never experimented with his acting style because even in movies like Fan where it's a big risk he still does all the things that a SRK movie should do. Basically he checks all the boxes he should as a star. That happened even in Zero. And I agree that it's a marketplace and he has to sell what audiences want to buy but nobody is forcing him to make the biggest box office blockbusters. Again he wants to break his previous box office record because he wants to be famous or something. He can easily make a small film for a certain audience and make his money but he tries to balance both what he wants and what audiences want in the same film and he ends up with a Raone or Fan or Zero where the box office is disappointing and the artistic merit is also disappointing. He should do films where he can actually flex his acting muscles because he has it in him but he doesn't and that's why he is an average actor. But still he is way better than Salman Khan 😂. Also a side note: it's just a stupid side note 😂 but I think with Microsoft he changed the world not people's lives but with his foundation he is actually changing people's lives more intimately. Atleast that's what I got from his annual letters 😅

    One thing I dislliked about this video (not the reaction but the video itself) is the "educating" tone that it intended to adopt. Don't educate the audience. The audience are the paying customers. They know exactly what they want to see and what would entertain them. After a hard week's work I, personally, would prefer a Ranveer over a Nawaz, any time of the year. Loved how Korbin put it quoting Harrison Ford ... lol. Thats what it is all about. At the end of the day money will run the show and money comes from paying customers. As of now paying customers in India will pay for Salman more than they would for Nawaz. That's just the way it is and always has been. You cannot "educate" an entire nation of at least 400 million potential viewers, change their tastes and then hope that they will watch, what you call, "good cinema". That's not how industries work. Take any industry. If you don't cater to the existing tastes of the customers you will go out of business.

      @@EagleOverTheSea This is a reaction channel. They (Rick and Korbin) watch stuff and react and express opinions. This is not an art class. I have been following this channel since Feb 2019. And my comment was not on this channel, it was on the video that they reacted to. That video had an "educational" tone which I disliked. Even Rick and Korbin did not agree with everything said in the video. That video was desperately trying to create an opinion instead of only stating facts. If it hadn't, then every time the narrator said "garbage acting " or "bad actors" they would not have shown Salman or Varun on the screen. That video reeked of anti-incumbancy and anti-establishment.
      My thing is simple. If you don't cater to the tastes of the audience you are no good. Period. In today's world customer decides quality. That video was trying to create an opinion that Salman or Varun or Kareena cannot act and are where they are only because of their contacts and influence. May be they *are* great actors and choose not to use their talent fully because that is not what the customers want. May be Salman can act much better than Nawaz but we haven't had a chance to see that side of Salman. And for this reason I disliked the video that was reacted to in this episode of OSR because it was trying to be unnecessarily pedantic and highly opinionated. If you want to talk art, discuss theatre or Indian classical music or henri matisse or ansel adams or cartier-bresson. Bollywood is the last thing you will discuss as art and then keep cribbing about it. (Bade aaye art shikhanewaale !! (sarcasm intended :D))

      Djso H Finally some one understood this. Thank you for elaborating. What is the big problem of our Indian audience is that they limit themselves with genres which in foreign countries you don't get to see. What I am saying is if you observe you will realize that Indian people who loves thriller, action movies tends to hate romantic and comedy movies (not all) they are tend to stuck with that style and genre they love and don't want to accept and appreciate other genres which have every right to co-exist(ex: "I hate typical romantic Bollywood movies cause I'm cool") . Even smart youtubers like Shwetabh tend to do this stupidity I still don't understand why. Now compare our Indian audience with US or any foreign audience. They love to watch movies like avengers, mission impossible, star wars, godzilla, john wick, on the other hand they also love movies like Aviator, Catch me if you can, Lincoln, No country for old man, Godfather, Silence of the lambs and accept all these genres, appreciate all the actors in these movies and their performances.Yes they are very serious about quality in a movie but they are not stuck in the "Genre trap" like Indian audience. If my statement is wrong than just see the list of the blockbuster movies of past 30 years. 95% of them are from romantic or action genres. I agree with most of the examples stated in Vinit's video. I grew up watching a lot of Hindi films and used to feel that the Khans and other top Bollywood stars are in fact good actors. But as my exposure to world cinema increased, the way I interpret an effective performance also underwent a change. "In your face" acting with enhanced expressions and chewing up the scenery with overbearing presence are the two issues that I find problematic in mainstream Bollywood actors. This case is especially true for Shah Rukh. If one considers his legacy, there aren't many films which still feel fresh over repeat views - except maybe for a Swades or a Chak de, where he had shed the stardom and became aligned with the character. Otherwise, his characters always felt like an extension of himself - the romantic charmer like all of his Dharma or Yashraj characters. Aamir is somewhat more experimental, but still plays safe with character selection. I do disagree with Ranveer's criticism for Ram Leela, as Rick also mentioned, it was what that movie's universe called for. But as Vinit indirectly points out, even Ranveer and Varun from today's generation of actors are average at best. Mainstream Bollywood employs very little craft and innovation, and this approach has extended to actors who seem to be playing the same role over and over in different guises. The audience, may be due to lack of exposure to better content, considers it as "good" and this behavior and rather unworthy praise fools the actors into believing that this mediocrity is in fact "good". With OTT, I hope this trend changes and we get to see more diverse characters which are memorable.

      Finally, a sensible comment! You hit the nail on the head with "lack of exposure". That is precisely the problem with a lot of audiences in India. Especially the kind who are not comfortable even watching Indian content beyond their known languages.

      @@EagleOverTheSea even the two hosts of this channel aren't sophisticated with World cinema, they lack exposure too.
      Honestly, these are rather biased people pretending to be sitting on judgment chairs because...they are actors apparently.
      It kind of bugs me that this Rick guy was literally preparing to disagree throughout the video, and ofcourse after it got over.
      Their treatment to films and acting that they spoke of in the discussion was rather surface level. Stating points like 'Effortlessness', which Is something that comes handy with an actor, it's not something one trains himself for.
      And yes, they took the point about voice adaptation in a literal sense and not as an example to explain something broad in a 7 minute long video.
      I wouldn't really take the words from these chaps seriously....

      Well the legacy is about the shahrukh khan movies . Overseas non NRI audience loves his the Dharma,yrf movies . Like a Malaysian tweet if there is srk movie on tv ,it is begin to trend on twitter . Swades is a cult but audience doesn't watch again and again his swades even chak de india but k3g,ddlj, mainstream movie who gave him the larger than life image. It is not about the character selection but what's in that . Dilip kumar was known for his tragedy roles but it doesn't mean he was playing safe

    I 100% agree to what he say's in the video. Let's say Ranveer Singh's character in "Bajirao Mastani" is Eccentric (where in there was no need to be). Portraying the same in all the films is not good acting. it's just lack of skills.

    Despite some valid points, this doesn't take cultural expectations into account. A lot of the things he said are "bad" are actually what provoke the heart strings of Indian audiences and are very appropriate for our films and/or that time period. There seems to be a bias against any person who has become a commercial success in favor of intimate or artistic films, confusing film style preference for an objective standard of acting. The biggest pitfall was not acknowledging that even within commercial acting there can be great diversity. All the Khans have a similar career trajectory and yet you can dislike one and love another for vastly different reasons. At the end, a lot of it does come down to the actor's preference and end goal should be performance fits the film like Rick and Korbin said.
