- Lance, JB, George, and Johan break down Tadej Pogačar’s dominant performance to grab his third consecutive victory at Il Lombardia, before going through the major takeaways of his 2023 season and judging his overall accomplishments. They also dig into the sheer difficulty of this race, as well as Primož Roglič’s up-and-down performance and his confirmed move to Bora-Hansgrohe for the 2024 season. They wrap up the show by reviewing the Jumbo-Visma/Soudal-QuickStep merger that didn’t happen and Mark Cavendish’s decision to return for one more year of racing.

The last podcast/episode with Jan Ulrich was amazing. He is such an intelligent guy and a classy sportsman.
Thank you gentlemen. You make cycling grand. The insight, the stories, the knowledge makes me looking forward to the next podcast. Ride to the level of your smile.
It cracks me up to hear this crew talk about coaches and preparation techniques.
Pogacar toyed with Jonas at Paris-Nice, too.
The crazy apparent ending to the Super team fiasco led to JV loosing one of its most important and longest leaders..one has to wonder if the events of the "merger" discussion didn't create a convenient opportunity to release Rog. I'm so happy for him. Let's see him on his own against the others
Have loved your coverage of this years season, roll on 2024 👏🏼
Great show. What a great time to be a cycling fan. Looking forward to the 2024 season!
2024 appears to be very interesting...
Could be a fun tour with enough teams not stacked to the gills
Just saw Rog interview post Lombardy and he said traffic blocked the road on last descent when Pog got away. Roglic said he was tired though so maybe the result was the result.
Its close between Pog, Jonas and Primos for the best 2023 season but I think Pogacar is the narrow winner. Toss in Remco and MVDP, 5 riders dominated the peloton.
I don't think it's really that close, Pogi is clearly better. I might reconsider if Jonas had at least one second place in classic.
@@bojandolinar1535 the Tour alone is worth a handful of any other races.
@@rockhopper01 So Pogi's second place should count for something then, no?
Jonas destroyed Pogi in the tour
@@yeahyeahKeepDreaming You have a point here because Pogi never even beat Jonas in a single classics, let alone destroyed him.

Thanks guys, have a great off-season!
“I was sick of taking supplements and pills” but not insulin and epo! 😂😂Lance is my boy!!!! And the 8 Sleep pod cover is amazing. One time it tapped me on the shoulder and woke me up to let me know I had to go to the bathroom.
Another great season of The Move! Your team is the best, Chapeau and many thanks!
Tadej just has a different perspective on the sport than LA and JB, he said at the beginning of the year that he would rather win Le Ronde than the TDF this year, so he has already answered that question. Respect to all.
Btw, Jens Voight is also really great on the moto!
You know it's been a year of iconic performances when, while discussing the Velo d'Or, you fail to mention MvdP. 2 WCs + 2 monuments...
Northern Italy is absolutely beautiful and cycling there even better.
Thanks for a great season, guys. Great point by George about the mental toughness of Primoz Roglic. Bora was a good choice for him. You could say the same about the mental approach of Jonas Vingegaard. His focus is on winning the TDF and nothing distracts him from that. I don't understand Tadej, though. Nobody can win them all. Why can't he have a rational long-term plan for each season and stick with it? The one time he went head-to-head against Jonas this year besides the TDF was at Paris-Nice, where he crushed Jonas and everyone else. Who remembers that besides me? And even sensei Johan has to look it up to confirm Tadej is the no. 1 rider in the world rankings by a huge margin. To me that illustrates Lance's point that the UCI rankings, significant though they may be, don't capture our imagination the way the TDF does. Which Lance won seven straight times.
He crushed Jonas 2 times in Tirreno-Adriatico as well in 21 and 22 - it seems like March is the month to beat him -wonder why.

Doping cycles
Look, Pogacar's real goal is not beating the TDF record, I am sure that if he gets it will be great, but his real goal is to be remembered as one of the all time greats. Besides 2 TDF wins, he has one already 5 monument wins, so career wise he is much ahead of Vingegaard who has won 0. If Vingegaard ends his career with 2 TDF's more than a Pogacar with 10 monuments more, only Tour-centric folks will think Vingegaard is the best of the two... because to be one of the all time greats in cycling you NEED to win more than the Tour.
@@ernestkrajnc6412get a grip, drop the dope bs
@@pedrodiogo4807 so Indurain and Froome are not among the all time greats?
Crazy season for both Pogacar and Vingegaard. Difficult to compare one day race wins to stage race wins.
Imagine if Vingegaard had gone for the Vuelta win on Angliru and the following stages, then he would have won: Tour of the Basque, Dauphiné, Le Tour de France and La Vuelta :O
And the same goes for Pogacar... Imagine if he hadn't crashed out of Liege and had won it instead of Remco :O Two crazy athletes with completely different riding strenghts.
It all could have been different if them 2 moments hadn't if happened, I agree with what you said 100%
Jonas WAS allowed to go for the Vuelta win two times, yet he didn't win it.
@@bojandolinar1535 would have won if he wanted to in the last week 👍
@@HouseMD519 Difficult to say since Roglič was not allowed to race. Unfortunately, we will never know.
@@bojandolinar1535 I agree that Roglic was caught in a difficult situation when Vingegaard was up the road, but whenever he tried to attack and bridge up he couldn’t drop the other favourites. So to me, he wasn’t as strong as Vingegaard on the climbs.
😊very good information campeon never stop congratulations for your help about Ciclimos you are the best
Has there ever been an era cycling with more phenomenal riders at the same time?
yup 1995-2000 and 2020-2023, thus.
@George there are
no turns in ski jumping...
Remco said he stays with Soudal. Here's what he said today:
"The team continues, so I will stay,” he said, putting an end to the speculation.
"There were a few difficult moments, but next year we’ll go for it," he added, with the Tour de France the expected major goal.
So it will be interesting if Ineos is still chasing him. Maybe he just said to calm down the speculation after the merger/take-over bust? we shall see over the winter. This whole thing with the JV merger/takeover doesn't give a good impression of Bakala's commitment to support project Remco to stay with Soudal.
I agree I don't think TJV and SQ will merge
Remco's word doesn'g mean a thing.
He said to Merckx he would ride with his team and then he went to QS. So Remco will not stay with QS and will go for the money in a good team.
@@youriverstraete4986 As my last paragraph, this so-called merger/takeover saga, doesn't give a good impression of Bakala's/Soulda's commitment to Remco> So I won't be surprised if he signed with Ineos.
@@GonzoJohnny Well, I was just reporting what he said. Whether he will honor his word or not, no one has a clue. That's why I say we shall see in the winter. (He also said, winter is a long time - whatever that means)
I like that Adam Yates is working so well for Tadej after his move to UAE, and now the Yates brothers are competing at the same races. Who do you think will be the super domestic in Bora for Roglic?
@user-tn6xo3fe8r You must know something. Spill the beans.
so he is doped but vinge with that tt isnt?
@user-tn6xo3fe8r
And he won a few races too when given a chance (Adam that is).
Great Podcast! Did you select the winner of the Ventum gravel bike contest?
Jonas is my pick to win a GT between Pog, Primoz, Jonas and Remco. Nobody can hang with Jonas on the steep ascents at altitude. Pog is the king of classic races.
Next year’s TdF will be very interesting as I think Pog is coming for blood.
Roglik. George, stay consistent, haha! It’s Roglich. Not that hard.
no problem, marypinkcoats
It is clear that Pogacar wants to be a COMPLETE racer, not a TdF only sort. Pogacar's season was far better than Vinegard. Despite what Lance says, the TdF is NOT the only race. There are other important races, the Tour of Flanders is a crown jewel in any racers palmares. Pogacar still won 2 stages and finished second on the TdF. Winning Flanders, Amstel and Fleche is by itself a great feat. Pogacar is simply bad to the bone, as Bobke would say.
Guys, not two minutes into an episode on a historic day for cycling you start discussing what it means for next year’s TdF… thank the cycling gods Pogačar thinks differently
The reality is the TDF is bigger than cycling.
@@systemicchaos3921 ...do you even listen to yourself? Whatever you say pal🙂
Great podcast.
Did they ever say who won the Ventum bike for La Vuelta trivia?
Lance looking fit... keep the trend.
The M. Mørkøv move makes sense. This year M.M was great and always in the right position but somehow F. Jacobsen didn't follow the lead.
They could have won soooo many more races if only F.J stayed behind M.M
Looking forward to TDF 2024 as we know Mark will follow M.M All the way to Paris where Mark will win. 💯
Stay safe 🤘🇺🇲🇩🇰🤘
Next season likely the Soudal thing will flare up once again. With Evenepoel being in the middle of it.
What did the great wout win this year?
Mostly minor stuff. E3 Saxo, Tour of Britain and last Monday smaller Italian classic.
astana got a number of capable riders, schelling, kanter and others, i wonder if they will use henok for cav leadout 🤯🇪🇷 get ready for this kid he is same age as biniam, slightly slower development but still a born winner with a kick like u wouldnt believe.their other neo pros are beasts too javier romo is part of this unbelievable generation of spanish climbers, and harold Lopez is a great young ecuadorian coming from a couple years in their dev program. a long way from the gc winning days of nibali and even longer since the days of lance and contador internal rivalry 😂
👏👏👏👏👏
this is what is so great about cycling. Besides Pogacar and Jonas V, you have Van Aert and Vanderpol. Who is the best?
And Albert phillipsen who is 17 years old and win All on a bike and All the biggest Teams want him.pogacar and Vingegaard Have a Big problem when he Albert Enter The Tour soon.he is the New Eddi merx
I hope you guys do at least a quick story of a young American winning Paris-Tours in his tryout race for Israel Premier Tech.
MM told Danish TV2 Sport, that Cavendish called him the day after his crash, and asked if he had signed a new contract, to wich MM said he hadn’t signed a new contract yet. Cavendish then said, he wants MM to come to Astana, and will do whatever he can to make that happen, and if he succeeds, he will take another year. MM took that as a big pat on the back, that Cavendish wanted his help to win more races next year, and said yes right away.
Tadej 👍🏻🚴
A downhill ski-jumper?! :-) Funny. Is there such a thing as an uphill ski-jumper? :P 🙂
Tadej loves to race and win, just like Mathieu. They would never only focus on the Tour for a whole year like Lance did.
Revenge for Giro Dell'Emilia loss. 👍 Also credit to Adam Yates.
Maybe but i feel Il Lombardia suits Tadej more as he is a bit better climber. Emillia is more of a steep violent finish which both have but Primož can hang with Tadej and win meaning you cannot ride away.
Jan is the greatest rider to only win one TDF.
Lance & Jan remind me Daniel Larusso & Jhonny Lawrence
Pogacar did not "dominate" today! The others simply rode negatively!!
Pog, clearly, doesn't like the cold...makes those early classics tough for him, I think...
Does Astana have anyone to pull the sprint train over the mountains and through 3 weeks of a tour??
Dombrowski
So, safe to assume Pog is the closest thing we'll have to Merckx?
His hit rate with monuments is over 50% + 2 GTs, honestly if he changed his goal to the other ones he'll likely win either the Giro or Vuelta if he wanted to
He's disrupting the game being a legit threat with the Classics-Monuments and Grand Tours
Pogi was 3rd also on world championships...to add to that
George, Roglic may be a great downhill skier, but he can't ride a bike worth a shit... That's why Pogacar pulled away from him on the descent. Let's all remember Roglic started riding late... It seems to be a pattern that everybody who starts riding late just doesn't have that intrinsic bike handling skill like the guys who started earlier/younger.
👍
Recency bias is showing here. Go & re-watch stage 19 of the 2018 Tour. Roglic destroyed the descent & won the stage. He's fast downhill. As fast as the best (certainly faster than Evenepoel).
But yesterday in Lombardia he was totally cooked after bridging the gap at the top of Ganda. He was spent. He had nothing left.
@@cartermoth6447 You are certainly correct about Evenepoel... You may be right about his downhill skills but in th past few years especially in the Tour de France he always seemed to have a bunch of ticky tack crashes that riders like Pogacar just don't ever have..... Also, I thought Roglic was was a downhill ski jumper for distance, not a racer, am I correct? Thanks.
I agree with Lance, Remco is the biggest looser in this, as he knows that with Soudal he stands no chance in competing with Pogacha or JV in TDF, wont be suprised that he breaks the contract in frustration after all😅. 2024 will be a 3 horse races where Remco will ship at least 1 hr on his bad days and beg for mercy to win some stages from these guys. Soudal can never win a GT where it matters the most, they are no more classics dominating team since some years already. Pure stage hunters from now on.
@@GonzoJohnny..how are JV losers? They lost Primos, but they actually had too many "leaders" and he was the odd man out.
TEAM INEOS VISMA
I think Jumbo are going to dump soudal with a load of crap when the doping scandals come out, that's just my opinion, but something isn't right about of this
Vingegar wins because of his strong team. But Pogacar is the better cyclist, hands down. But he needs to fix his tour team, 2 losses in a row is bad. No strong team, no winning the tour.
When Vingegaard's career is over he will go down in history as the greatest rider to never win a velo d'or. With Remco and Pogacar and the popularity these riders have I'm not sure that Vingegaard will ever win the velo d'or.
You guys are great always but Lance please drop the grudges, they didn’t hep you in 2012 and don’t help you now. So please lay off Vinokourov. I’m not a huge Vino fan but it gets old. Let’s focus on the positive and he hired Cav, Awesome!!!
Jonas is verging in Le Patron territory. He was going into team buses, organizing protest, fought for his team to support Kuss, has the won the TdF twice in a row. He gets no respect from the media.
The sponsors aren't lining up because they are afraid of the next doping scandal.
Pogi needs to win the triple crown!
All GTs or WC+Monuments+Tdf?
Vingegaard is by far the best rider...sorry, but he actually destroyed Pogacar in this year´s Tour and could easily have won the Vuelta...so please stop calling Pogacar the best in the world.
check UCI ranking
True, Vingegaard is by far the best stage racer in the world. Pogacar is just the best all around rider, Van Der Poel is the best one day racer. The only impressive win for Pogacar this year was at Flanders, Vingegaard and Van Der Poel won the most important and biggest races.
Lance has 0 TDF Vics..
@@GonzoJohnny he didn't even win a stage
Say what you like Pogacar wins this that or whatever.
The best cyclist is the one who wins the tdf.
That is what the public sees as the best cyclist. This is why the tdf course needs to change and include 100km of flat ITT like it used to. The best all round test for a cyclist should be the tdf.
So its Jonas with TdF win? Can Jonas win any of one day races Tadej did? LBL or Il Lombardia perhaps?
No, that's what cycling ignorant folks such as yourself see as the best cyclist. Real cycling fans know that you can't just win a three week race in July and be considered the best rider in the world. Actually, this year there is an argument to be made about Vingegaard but just because he came second at the Vuelta, won the Dauphiné, Itzulia instead of just winning the Tour... For me Pogacar is still the number 1 though...
