    In our multiple adventures with our "Boler" trailer we discovered that almost all larger bridges have an access roadway on one of the four coners so that engineers and maintenance people can work under the bridge. These spots when over a water feature (river, pond etc.) were invariably used by locals as a party place-campout spot. Great watching your adventure.....bear

    I can't see why the river is underappreciated. Why is there's only one boat in that paradise? Or maybe people still are scared to go to the river because of the possibilities. Robbers. Envious people. Drunkards, addicts partying nearby. People may need more than just encouragement.

    Ok, now I'm hooked on the adventure. This is something I'd like to experience so bad! My first video I came across was somewhere in the middle of the trip so what I want to know is, what is your plotted course/ destination? How far can you travel on 7 gallon of gas? Are you staying on the boat full time or do you sometimes stay in a hotel in route! What do you eat? Can you legally fish while in transit? So many questions, I'm sure you've done a lot of homework before setting out and admire your courage.

    • @backwatersandbackroads
      @backwatersandbackroads  5 лет назад

      Howdy Shane, thanks for watching my videos ;) let me try yo answer a couple of your questions. Gas mileage: when flowing down river (most of the trip) and keeping it slow (5 mph or so) with the 4 stroke, the mileage was ridiculously good. I spent approx 400 dollars in gas for the entire trip (Illinois to Florida) when beating against the current, mileage drops a lot. Fishing: I didn't bother getting licenses. I hardly saw other people out there, let alone authority figures. I hope you do a trip like this. I would recommend it to anyone call or text if you have questions. Text is best. 5302104128

    What I should have added to my comment about tying to a tree is that if you can get deep enough into a channel tie to a tree on either side that keeps the boat in the middle and the anchor off the bow..... pointed into where you think the weather may come from. I learned this last year with a storms that kept me pinned down for two and a half days. I don't think my anchor could have held me in the winds I experienced.

    • @backwatersandbackroads
      @backwatersandbackroads  6 лет назад

      jim2shoes1 hi Jim. I've been trying to trees when I beach it. If I ever get into a flooded area with enough depth and big trees, I plan on trying that method. Thanks for watching eh ;)

    I'm enjoying following along on your adventure. I myself am a northern Wisconsin boater with a considerable amount of time around the Apostle Islands out of Bayfield WI. My wife and I have made short trips on the St. Croix and Upper Mississippi River ( WI, MN and IA.) I admire your determination to make to this trip of a lifetime and documenting it with your great video's.
    Do you have a Facebook page? Have you ever considered doing a short daily up date by FB. I think many of your followers would enjoy a quick few lines a "Captains Daily Log" just the basics like: weather, location & mile marker, miles traveled daily (I think that would be of big interest, I know it is to me) a few daily expenses (gas, laundry, food & trips to store and a picture if you have an interesting one. Just keep it brief 3-4 line would be good, Just a thought.

    Really enjoying the videos. I have watched all the videos I can on the Illinois River to get a feel for it and you're giving me the most information. I have taken a sailboat and removed the mast and have traveled for up to 3 weeks on it. It trailers really well and I have pulled it as far as Florida to explore their rivers. The Shanty boat design sure looks more comfortable but I didn't go that way because in rough weather my sailboat does much better. Get as good as you can in anchoring and I hope you have a second anchor. It's only a matter of time before you get caught in bad weather at night and your anchoring skills is your safety and a 2nd anchor will be needed. In fact a rope to a tree will give you a lot of Peace of Mind should your main anchor give way due to wind, wave and thunderstorms.

    • @backwatersandbackroads
      @backwatersandbackroads  6 лет назад

      jim2shoes1 funny you mention that. I'm at anchor right now, in a "chute" which I'm learning is a side channel that has the same current at the main river. One of my anchors works very well (hard to get out in the morning) and a second anchor which isn't so good, but I set it anyway to ar least have a chance at catching if the main drags. Lots or angle on the rope helps. I read a blog where a sail boat fella left Chicago in November and headed down this way. He used 4 anchors. Finding a good sheltered spot is priceless.
