    You actually do see the litle "four icon thing" on the inside of the canon. Samus has an idle animation where she flips it and messes with the buttons.

  • @MetroidDatabase1

    Great video. If you sit and wait for a while, Samus has an idle animation where she flips the side panel of her arm cannon around, revealing those beam-color buttons, and then flips it back.
    Regarding the "Morph Ball sized" environment artwork: in game development, a lot of times extra amounts of environment art are made and never used, and sometimes they later turn that unused artwork into decorations. That could be why the morphball "conveniently" fits into some of those assets that are just out of reach.

      His name is in the rectangle because this is his video. On your videos, if you commented on them, your name would be in a rectangle. I believe one main function of it is to identify viewers who the video author is, should someone have their same name and icon. A quick, convenient way to let someone know that person is legit, and not some copycat faker.

    cool stuff! I know way too much about this game, as I've played it nearly since it came out and have studied its internals pretty thoroughly as a programmer for a couple years, and still learned a couple things from this video (never knew about that Ridley animation on the Frigate)! So nicely done :P I think I can explain a couple things about the stuff you pointed out.
    2:02 - The thing inside the arm cannon you showed off is used in one of the arm cannon's idle animations. Samus flips it over and starts tapping the buttons.
    3:20 - During the battle with Ridley his heart is normally covered up by a metal plate, but about halfway through the ground phase of the fight you destroy the metal plate and from that point on you shoot at his heart directly until he dies. Very commonly missed detail!
    4:48 - I don't think they scrapped anything, it's just this is the only hallway with an open ceiling that connects to such a large room. It'd be kind of odd to be coming from Arboretum and then look back the way you came + up through the ceiling and see nothing, so they added an exterior. It's some very nice attention to detail, for sure.
    8:48 - There's geometry behind the hatches because the hatches open when you activate the statues and the water starts pouring out. It's not very highly detailed so I don't think there's much to see there.
    9:12 - I'm pretty sure that ceiling is there to occlude environmental shadows. Most of the lighting/shadows the game uses are baked into lightmaps, but I believe it does do some basic shadowcasting so actors that are in shadow appear darker. If there was no ceiling then the light would just pass through the backfaces of the regular geometry and objects would always appear lit. There are a lot of other rooms in Chozo Ruins that have similar ceilings (like Main Plaza and Watery Hall) but most of them have flags toggled so they're only rendered for shadowcasting and for lightmap rendering, so they don't normally show up ingame. That one doesn't for some reason.
    There are actually quite a lot of spots where Retro missed doing this, so you can actually see that issue in action in a bunch of places in the game. The main one I can think of is Quarantine Cave in Phendrana. There are a bunch of spots in that room that appear lit even though there's no hole in the ceiling to let light through - the reason is because there isn't geometry covering the backside of some of the level so the light just goes straight through it. (If you go up and look at the top side of the ceiling in that room you can also see a giant circle of light from the spotlights they used as the "sun" light to render the lightmaps.)
    10:35 - oh wow lol. The game has a couple different preset environmental effects (rain, snow, etc). There's one effect type that this room (and some of the other crashed Frigate rooms) uses, and is later shared with the lower part of Torvus in Prime 2. We couldn't tell what it did because we couldn't see any visible effect from turning it on. I guess you figured it out, and it only shows up out of bounds for some reason? That's a nice find :P
    11:56 - Metroid Prime's essence actually isn't there in its entirety, it's just the front portion of his face/brain. No tentacles. It's there because part of it is visible when the "head" is raised up to show his eyes.
    12:35 - The way cutscenes work in Prime 1 is they deactivate objects that are no longer relevant to the cutscene when the camera angle changes. This isn't an automated setup, they need to manually set up the deactivation for each individual object. So I think it's a lot more likely they just missed deactivating that one because it's not visible in the rest of the cinematic, and isn't an indication of any cut content.
    13:00 - Fun fact - that isn't the regular Gravity Suit model, it's a Varia Suit model with a few of the textures recolored to purple/blue instead of orange. You can tell that from a bunch of little details that are off, mainly that it doesn't have the same shade of purple as the real Gravity Suit, and the visor and lights on the knees are green instead of blue.
    BTW, the environment disappearing depending on where Samus is is a pretty common technique called frustum culling. It helps performance a lot by not rendering things that aren't visible. There's an AR code you can use that disables it. Googled it real quick and I think this is it:
    043451D0 38600001
    043451D4 4E800020

      You can also see the Sunchamber where you fight Flaahgra and later go back to get an artifact. It's the room with the little teeth things that doesn't connect to the room you're in.

    I do not think the visor is huge, I think it's a composite Rendering. so the visor is rendered and "adjusted" based on the main rendering camera( at least this is what I would do, as a big object on screen in level would cause risk of clipping through other objects...)
    normally they do this also for guns in older games, this is why you see perspective aberrations in older games.

  • @vissova
    @vissova 8 лет назад +6

    The first time I used the free camera mode in Dolphin on Metroid Prime, I was blown away. This game has some ingenious design. You _never_ would have known that the planet model is no larger than Samus's spaceship, but because it's rendered below everything else, it looks enormous. Or that her hud is a 3D model, which is simply rendered above everything else at all times, so nothing clips through it. Whoever came up with this method is fucking brilliant.

    Awesome video for an awesome game. It's so cool to see that the detail in Prime isn't just skin-deep and that the developers went out of their way to really build the world outside of what would normally be seen by the player.
    Not sure if you know this, but that curious little coloured segment to the arm canon you showed in the beginning is actually part of an idle animation. If you leave Samus standing around and don't touch the controller, she'll eventually fiddle around with her arm canon and that segment rotates out and she presses the buttons on it. I love that it's in the game. Little things that show how her suit and weapons function. Damn I love me some Metroid :D

  • @zimtak111
    @zimtak111 8 лет назад +11

    As far as the statues that pour water, I would say that no, that is not unnecessary detail for the inside of the reservoirs that open and let out the water. It wasn't some kind of scrapped idea, that's just necessary detail. Just like the detail inside Samus' ship entrance, technically you *can* mildly see it in cutscenes so you can't really say it's unnecessary or a scrapped idea. The roof shingles in that one area is a little odd though, but to be fair, I haven't played that game in a long time and again this might be necessary detail in a cutscene. If it is never shown in a game cutscene then it most likely was a scrapped cutscene.

    • @seeibe
      @seeibe 6 лет назад +3

      That room has a half pipe. Maybe the developers thought you could jump so high you might get to see the edges of the roof. And instead of texturing the edges they textured the whole thing.

    I really wish they had kept the more realistic look of Samus Aran from MP1 instead of the more 'anime doll' look from the later games (yes, I know she is depicted like that in the 2D games, Zero Mission and M: OM at least).
    I find it more fitting for her, especially as Samus Aran is more popular in the West than in Japan.

    • @kaliek5281
      @kaliek5281 7 лет назад +2

      The reason for the change: Prime was developed by Retro Studios which is based in the USA....so they went with a most WESTERN depiction of her. The rest of the games were from Nintendo themselves, so they were more Japanese/Eastern in art. As for why she looks like she does in Prime 2 (Zero Suit and more Anime-ish) it's because Nintendo wanted Retro to make her look in-line with Zero Mission which had just come out around that time.

    FYI there's AR codes in Dolphin VR to remove the culling when facing away from the direction of the character model. This is so headlook works in a VR headset while playing metroid, and I dunno but maybe you can find a way to use them to help with the culling problem when boundary breaking.

    I went back to playing the game and today I realized that the part in the Chozo Ruins with the buildings outside is important. The reason it was placed there is because that hallway in specific leads to the Sunchamber which is relevant to you the player since you have to go there to kill Flaahgra and also get the Chozo Artifact from the same place.
    The only reason it's only done in this room is because the Sunchamber is the tallest protrusion from the ruins so it would only make sense for you to see it from afar.

    The Prime team at Retro Studios put so much passion into the Prime series. They really cared about the Metroid series and it shows throughout the prime series. They were so impressive with the sheer amount of detail that they put into each game especially for being a series that started on the gamecube. Games with this much detail and care put into them were almost unheard of at the time besides the zelda games on the gamecube. And even they didn't have even close to this level of effort and detail in every single part of the game to the very last pixel.

    I recently played through this on hypermode, it's one of the only games that I have played many, many times that I really never get bored with. It's got great replay value and I'm always trying to beat my completion time (I might have to do speed runs of it eventually). Excellent video as always, I found it funny that you're actually just controlling an arm the whole time lol.

    there's a way to look at the snow ridley before the cutscene starts.
    with freelook:
    get space jump early (helps with closing a door)
    get boost ball, then go back to Phendrana Shorelines, but stay close to the door you just went through, double jump to close the door and stop the Pulse Bombu noise, face the door and free look.
    without freelook:
    do some Out Of Bounds trick in a nearby big room (Chapel of the Elders or Phendrana Canyon) and then get back to Phendrana Shorelines staying OOB

I find this series very interesting because the inner game developer inside of me always wonders what is going on outside of our view and what the game devs could be hiding. Its a great series, man! I know I don't have much to offer... but if you need any help with a video or something feel free to hit me up, and I'd be happy to see how I can assist you!

    Everytime I play Metroid Prime I'm amazed how much detail they got in this old game with their culling technique and those instanced corridors. Just a few more polygons and better textures, well mostly textures in high res with normals and you could sell it as a remaster.

    The part where you could see the other colors inside the arm cannon that are to indicate other beams can actually be observed if you let Samus stand idly. The same can be observed in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, although the colors and details are different. As for that duct in the submerged Frigate Orpheon that you show, I recall when I was new to the game if there was anything in there. It wasn't up until I got 100% that I figured it was nothing.

    This has probably been said, but the 4 buttons on the inside of of her cannon? One of her idle animations has her lift up her cannon, flip the panel around, then press a button before her gun "vents" and then re-sizes to her hand, basically in her way of re-adjusting a glove. Just something to note.

    with the whole duct thing you may want to look into the speedrun notes for this. there is a semi solid area outside of rooms but only goes down to about where a floor would normally be or some thing after which you get stuck or fall if you go down to far.

  • @boltstrike2787

    I'd definitely be interested in seeing Prime 2. Specifically if you could explore the Dark World version of that Federation outpost with the Dark Troopers. It seems like they hastily covered up a potential path towards that section in Accursed Lake with a few Ingclaws and we ended up visiting one room of that section in a cutscene (the one where Samus follows Dark Samus through the portal and the Ing Warriors steal all of her powerups). I have a theory that you were originally meant to progress past Accursed Lake and through the Dark World version of that section to find the Sky Temple key instead of finding it in Accursed Lake, but there's no real evidence confirming it. Seeing if there's anything more in that cutscene or behind the Ingclaws in Accursed Lake might provide some answers.

    Cool video, I kept my gamecube around til about 2012 for this game. major nostalgia spine tingle when that start menu theme drops. Spent infinite hours in this getting 100% reading and re-reading all the scannable lore and useless information, not too many games with that heart and attention to detail anymore.
