- Peter Fenwick (born 25 May 1935) is a neuropsychiatrist and neurophysiologist who is known for his pioneering studies of end-of-life phenomena.
In this interview he talks about near-death-experiences (NDE), death-bed-visitors and how we can achieve a good death.
NDE research is at the cutting edge of consciousness research and offers a convincing model for the understanding of what happens when we die. Peter Fenwick describes the different transitional phases of the dying process and highlights the importance of letting go at the end of ones life.
He offers fascinating insights into common phenomena at the end of life, such as premonitions, seeing a light, death-bed-visions and coincidences.

When my daughter was 3 she came into the room i was in and said " grandmas in heaven" , moments later we got a phone call informing us her grandmother died.

My dad did exactly what he said… he had advanced dementia for a decade, unexpectedly went into atrial fib, unresponsive for an hour. When I told dad, to go find mom, go to the light, I told him it’s okay I can do living on my own, I’ll be okay. He picked up his head from the recliner he was in, looked at me with clear eyes, smiled, said okay. Laid back and immediately stopped breathing.
I was his nurse on the dementia unit, it was just him and I at 2 am.

unfortunately, America has psychiatrists who get money for each prescription they write, America does not have Neuropsychiatrists. Except for possibly Dr. Daniel Amen who uses SPECT Brain scans before starting Brain Therapy for his patients. His thinking ''How do you know unless you look? you wouldn't have open heart surgery with a Cardiologist who doesn't take x-rays of your heart and who doesn't take Ultrasound images of your heart, would you? Psychiatry is the only medical profession that doesn't 'look' at the organ they treat.''That's America's problem. Doesn't matter. Until someone does the card test successfully, All NED phenomena will still be considered hallucinations. Card test: A card two feet away from the ceiling, face up. Patients who claim to have a NED and remember what's on the card will convince the science community. And those patients' names will be recorded in
the history of science.
My grand-pa sat up and opened his eyes for an hour or two on the day he died, despite having been in a coma eyes-closed for days.
He had told me that he was not afraid of dying (when I asked him a couple of months before that), but that the only thing he really regretted, was no longer being able to see us, his loved ones.
Indeed, that morning, he opened his eyes, his wife (my grand-mother) and I were sitting with him, and he alternated stares between us. He was really looking, for the last time- it seemed he was trying to imprint our images in him.
That's called terminal lucidity. It's absolutely a real thing!

I was a nurse and did hospice nursing. When our mother and sister and brother in law died I tried so hard to get my sister's to listen to the hospice counselor or watch the videos and talk and make it nice and peaceful and beautiful like I'd helped other families, but they refused and just made the whole thing so very traumatic and then blamed me for taking charge, as they'd asked me to. I wish they knew now that I am dying, that it can be peaceful and should be! Us healthcare is not equipped for death. Every nurse Dr aide should have to write their own obituary and learn the stages of death and respect it more! But they forget...and there is too much suffering. Self euthanasia or suicide has increased because they will not discuss choices with patients whose lives are no quality, pain, lonely, sick and will never get better. The stigma is horrible. The conversations need to happen!

The USA has an abysmal culture, where shallow celebrities and sports figures are venerated, and the "virtue of selfishness" prevails everywhere. How can people who overconsume everything (commodities, entertainment, food, etc.) ever understand how to let go of it all at death?

In lndia death is a very serious subject . Taking care of elderly people is almost ardent responsibility of the relative. This is done with utmost love and care irrespective of their financial status.
I can't say what percentage but very many ppl who are disabled and with pain cannot get their pain part treated. Even when pain mitigation 5, 10 yrs ago was standard of care. Mediocre pain meds given and quality off life if very little improved. (And they wonder why some pplngonto looking for street meds. It is a crime not to treat pain. Reasons are, you would be addicted (which isn't a criteria superimposed on any other drug. Told often 10X as often that the pain isnt as bad as the patient reports if it's a woman. (This found by FDA of doctors (~2,000) and Published by FDA. Prescribed much larger doses with men. Prescibed quickly that day with men.(Minimized Women and I'm not it a libber.) Told I don't want to make yiu an addict. Si you surf yiur bed or wheel chair with whatever grace you can muster in constant pain. Many like me could be living a carefully monitored quality of life magnitudes better. No, therr is a fear ever since FDA said theybwould yank Dr. Licenses a few yrs ago if someone self euthanized. Some cases the Dr decided a little oainntelief better than nine and the chronically ill decidednenoughbwas enough because they couldn't get the leve of pain down to manageable. Especially after time on the oain med and tolerance was occurring. Medical establishment is culpable and unempathetic. It's is letting and participating in ine suffering needlessly. So to talk to a doctor who has added trauma via suffering about a nurse administration of drugs is an insult. If ine has autonomy and agengy.... some will choose that route. One room Insaw was white. Small whitensheet clad bed. No pictures. Hiw unaware. Remeber in I Robot where he and Porsche lay together in a dimly lit room. Warm colored silk like sheets under them and a oanorama on the wall of movie of earth's beautiful places? It should be like that. Or, we are forced to do our own. So far 5 in 6 years of disabled people. That's a tragedy.

His wisdom is so modern, yet so ancient.
A friend of mine just got diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer at 29 years of age. It's not certain it's going to kill him, but realistically it probably will. It has shaken me up somewhat, not gonna lie. I am older, at 36. One day, it'll be me. Maybe soon, maybe in four or so decades, but its coming. I'd like to be ready, as far as its possible to be ready. I can't imagine a worse thing than facing death with panic and despair.

If I had to recommend any one talk to help demystify death, it would be this one. I've had 2 NDEs and, a few years later, a spontaneous OBE that was wholly transformative - spiritually speaking. I had the privilege of meeting and doing a 6 week course with Dr Fenwick in London The Art of Dying.. amazing..
Wow! I worked at the Montreal Neurological Institute in the 1960s when Dr. Penfield was still attached to the hospital, but as @ consultant. I was working as an assistant to one doctor who had on his bookshelf all the write ups of Dr. Penfield’s and Lord Brain’s research with electrodes. It was fascinating reading. Dr. P. was also a very spiritual man and prayed before each surgery.
Listening to the last 10 minutes was like listening to myself speaking for the past 30 yrs. I've been speaking, writing and raising awareness of death and grief for the bulk of my career working in palliative care and yet.....we still battle to accept our mortality, have informed conversations among ourselves and with our kids and as a result death ALWAYS comes as a surprise, no matter how expected it is. 39.03 The Birds. When my father died two years ago I wanted him to give me a sign he was all right. I recently was at the barn he used to work in and I heard a strange noise which turned out to be a stray bird who flew in and was beating his wings against the window that couldn't be opened. Needless to say I took some pictures and films of him there with my phone like a modern man does nowadays. Then I took a long wooden pole to frighten him away from the window and into the open door. But he missed the door and soon went back to the window. I was talking to him throughout and tried to reach him with the pole. And then a strange thing happened. The bird sat on the end of the pole. I moved the pole slowly from the window. I was pretty sure he would fly away as soon as I lower the pole but he didn't so I slowly carried him away from the window and into the open door. Once in front of the open space he shot into the trees and vanished. Whatever it was it touched me deeply.
I have watched quite a few videos on death and near death experiences since my dear wife passed on and this is certainly one of the best and probably THE best. Incredibly comforting message from a really intelligent and very well informed man.
If you’re familiar with the Shawn Ryan Show, look up his recent interview with John Burke (episode #111) about NDE’s. It’s quite long but excellent, and there are a lot of descriptive elements given. You might really like that one as well.

Thank you, I have listened to you several times. It doesn't help my grieving though because I so wanted to be with the 'soul' of my husband when I die rather that absolutely everyone! I now have to be satisfied with our ashes being 'stirred up' and buried together as he requested. What my husband did explain during his final days, was there were hallucinations.. he was in a restaurant at one stage. However, he clearly differentiated between his dreams and / or hallucinations and the 'others' who came to see him, such as the person standing behind me, to whom he smiled and waved. I did not know about your work in the 1980s I was busy with small children, so not following research. Had I done so I would have responded because of an experience during childbirth. Which when I related it to the anaesthetist, was firmly dismissed as a result of Pethidine, rather than the haemorrhage and dash to theatre. You described it almost word for word during the interview.
My mother had a NDE 1 yr before her actual death. My DAD also had one after a GI hemorrhage but he survived and is still very well and happy

Most people who’ve experienced an NDE remark that it’s next to impossible to explain and yet the way the doctor explained it makes so much sense. Hi Dr Peter. Very nice interview. At 2020 my dad pass from COVID in Brasil and I’m 100 % sure my dad came to see me . I was sleeping I could feel him touch my arm , and he Told me not to cry because he was fine and getting better. The dream was so real I woke up I told my husband that I have a dream and my dad is getting better. I call the Hospital in Brasil but he’s was just passed.
My mother had dementia, was unconscious dying when the Dr mentioned hospital to drain her lungs she sat up glared at me, shook her head and said very forcibly "No, No". It was only when I walked round the bed which she followed with eyes and head, said "I know what you want, I promise" she closed her eyes and lay back down unconscious with the death rattle. Died in my arms 24 hrs later knowing I was there with a lovely smile facing me.

I've watched a lot of Nde's and listened to many Doctors talking about life after death, but, Peter Fenwick, above all the rest, convinces me more than anyone else, that our Consciousness survives the death of the body. 24:31 this brings back a memory of when my dad was passing from cancer ....right before he fell into what could best be described as a coma before he passed he would do this thing where he would almost appear to nod off and speak to himself while moving his hands and he said when ever it happened it was like a movie started in his head and he was reliving his life 😢 miss my dad. ..alot

Consciousness exists beyond the brain. It is the person (Spirit) that leaves the body. The brain stores memory but the consciousness becomes these memories when it leaves the body because when they come across love ones, they recognize them. They go through a "life review" that brings their life experiences to memory.
That's what I also like to believe but do you think that this guy talked about the same? At times I feel like that the more we discover about existence the more depressing it becomes. Non-dual would mean that your consciousness is not only yours but all people. One big one... this is where the saying comes "we are all one" but to be honest I thought that it can be possible by staying in our own individual consciouss mind and still feel them because of the same origin. So the question is... are we the creator or the creation... I hope that we are not merging into a soliphstic hole because that would be fatal to some of us at least.

It’s on this channel and it’s the NDE of Anke Evertz! She wrote a book called Nine Days in Eternity, but it is in German & has not yet been translated into English, sadly.

Now, my 2 year old grandson was in bed with me asleep. I had gotten up to go to the bathroom at 2 am.
She was standing in my doorway... I looked back in my bed to see if I was dreaming bcuz I knew I had just gotten out of bed! My grandson was there sleeping alone.
Then I was taken out of my current time and taken into a hospital doctors conference room where I saw angels and they spoke to me. Angels or beings. They were in the form of females.

After these things happened, in several days later...I had an accident on the road, where I had a NDE. I was myself, but I was connected to God and all other Spiritual beings.
We are DNA in God’s Being! Pureness! But, we are all different. Still, a whole Of One.

🐟 06. CONSCIOUSNESS/AWARENESS:
Consciousness means “that which knows” or “the state of being aware”, from the Latin prefix “con” (with), the stem “scire” (to know) and the suffix “osus” (characterized by). There is BOTH a localized knowing and a Universal Awareness, as explicated in the following paragraphs.
Higher species of animal life have sufficient cognitive ability to KNOW themselves and their environment, at least to a measurable degree. Just where consciousness objectively begins in the animal kingdom is a matter of contention but, judging purely by ethological means, it probably starts with vertebrates (at least the higher-order birds and fishes). Those metazoans which are evolutionarily lower than vertebrates do not possess much, if any, semblance of intellect, necessary for true knowledge, but operate purely by reflexive instincts. For instance, an insect or amphibian does not consciously decide to seek food but does so according to its base instincts, directed by its idiosyncratic genetic code. Even when a cockroach flees from danger, it is not experiencing the same kind of thoughts or feelings a human or other mammal would experience.
The brain is merely a conduit or TRANSDUCER of Universal Consciousness (i.e. Brahman), explaining why the more intelligent the animal, the more it can understand its own existence (or at least be aware of more of its environment - just see how amazingly-complex dolphin and whale behaviour can be, compared with other aquatic species), and the reason why it is asserted that a truly enlightened human must possess a far higher level of intelligence than the average person. The processing unit of a supercomputer must be far larger, more complex and more powerful than the processor in a pocket calculator. Therefore, it seems logical to conclude that the scale of discrete (localized) consciousness is dependent on the animal's brain capacity.
See Chapter 17 to understand the distinction between enlightenment and mere awakening.
Three STATES of awareness are experienced by humans and possibly all other species of mammals:
the waking state (“jāgrata”, in Sanskrit), dreaming (“svapna”, in Sanskrit), and deep-sleep (“suṣupti”, in Sanskrit). Beyond these three temporal states is the fourth “state” (“turīya” or “caturīya”, in Sanskrit). That is the unconditioned, eternal “state”, which underlies the other three.
The waking state is the LEAST real (that is to say the least permanent, or to put it another way, the farthest from the Necessary Ground of Existence, as explained towards the end of this chapter). The dream state is closer to our eternal nature, whilst dreamless deep-sleep is much more analogous to The Universal Self (“brahman”), as it is imbued with peace. So, in actual fact, the fourth state is not a state, but the Unconditioned Ground of Being, or to put it simply, YOU, the real self/Self, or Existence-Awareness-Peace (“sacchidānanda”, in Sanskrit).
Perhaps the main purpose of dreams is so that we can understand that the waking-state is practically indistinguishable to the dream-state, and thereby come to see the ILLUSION of this ephemeral world. Both our waking-state experiences and our dream-state experiences occur solely within the mental faculties (refer to Chapter 04 for an elucidation of this phenomenon). If somebody in one of your dreams were to ask your dream-state character if the dream was real, you (playing the part of that character) would most likely say, “yes, of course this is real!” Similarly, if someone were to ask your waking-state character if this world is real, you would almost undoubtedly respond in kind.
An apt analogy for Universal Consciousness is the manner in which electricity powers a variety of appliances and gadgets, according to the use and COMPLEXITY of the said device. Electricity powers a washing machine in a very simple manner, to drive a large spindle for laundering clothes. However, the very same electrical power may be used to operate a computer to manifest an astonishing range of outputs, such as playing audiovisual tracks, communication tasks and performing extremely advanced mathematical computations, depending on the computer's software and hardware. The more advanced/complex the device, the more complex its manifestation of the same electricity.
Using the aforementioned computer analogy: the brain is COMPARATIVELY equivalent to the computer hardware, deoxyribonucleic acid akin to the operating system working in conjunction with the memory, the intellect is equivalent to the processing unit, individuated consciousness is analogous to the software programme, whilst Universal Awareness is likened to the electricity which enlivens the entire computer system.
A person who is comatosed has lost any semblance of local consciousness, yet is being kept alive by the presence of Universal Consciousness.
So, then, one could complain: “That's not fair - why can only a genius be enlightened?” (as defined in Chapter 17).
The answer is: first of all, as stated above, every species of animal has its own level of intelligence on a wide-ranging scale. Therefore, a pig or a dog could (if possible) ask: “That's unfair - why can only a human being be enlightened?”
Secondly, it is INDEED a fact that life is unfair, because there is no “tit for tat” law of action and reaction, even if many supposedly-great religious preceptors have stated so. They said so because they were preaching to wicked miscreants who refused to quit their evil ways, and needed to be chastized in a forceful manner. It is not possible to speak gentle words to a rabid dog to prevent it from biting you.
There is evidence of Consciousness being a universal field, in SAVANT SYNDROME, a condition in which someone with significant mental disabilities demonstrate certain abilities far in excess of the norm, such as superhuman rapid mathematical calculation, mind-reading, blind-seeing, or astounding musical aptitude. Such behaviour suggests that there is a universal field (possibly in holographic form) from which one can access information. Even simple artistic inspiration could be attributed to this phenomenon. The great British singer-songwriter, Sir James Paul McCartney, one day woke with the complete tune of the song, “Yesterday”, in his mind, after hearing it in a dream. American composer, Paul Simon, had a similar experience when the chorus of his sublime masterpiece, “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, simply popped into his head.

In recent years, the term “CONSCIOUSNESS” has been used in esoteric spiritual circles (usually capitalized) to refer to a far more Homogeneous Consciousness (“puruṣa”, in Sanskrit), due to the fact that the English language doesn’t include a single word denoting the Universal Ground of Being (for instance “Brahman”, “Tao”, in other tongues). The word “Awareness” (capitalized) is arguably a more apposite term for this concept.
The typical person believes that the apparatus which knows the external world is his mind (via the five senses), but more perceptive individuals understand that the mind itself is cognizable by the intellect. Wise souls recognize that the sense of self (the pseudo-ego) is the perceiver of their intellects, whereas awakened persons have realized that the true self/Self is the witness of ALL these temporal phenomena.
The true self is synonymous with Consciousness, or with Infinite Awareness, or the Undifferentiated Unified Field (“Brahman”, in Sanskrit).
The dialectic exercise in the following three paragraphs should help one to understand the nature of the fundamental conscious observer, that is, the ULTIMATE observer of all phenomena (i.e. the subject/Subject, which is the authentic self, as opposed to material objects):
If one were to ask you whether you are the same person or individual you were at birth (or even at conception), you would probably respond in the affirmative. So, then, what PRECISELY is it about you which has remained constant since conception? In other words, what is the self-identity you had as an infant, which is the present “you”? It cannot be any part of your body or mind, since none of the atoms or molecules in your zygote body are extant, and “you” certainly did not possess a mind at conception. If you are reasonably intelligent, you may claim that your genome is the same now as it was then. However, it has recently been scientifically demonstrated that genetic code can (and usually does) mutate throughout an individual’s lifetime. Furthermore, nobody actively conceives of their essential nature being a bunch of genes!
More intelligent souls would probably counter thus: “The thing which stays the same from my birth to the present time is my sense of self.” This too, is fallacious, since the sense of self does not emerge until at least a couple of years after birth. An infant has no ideation of itself as an individual actor. You may then say “I was a (male/female) human being” but that doesn’t specify any PARTICULAR human (you, yourself).
So, then, what EXACTLY is it which remains “you” from conception till death? That is the “I am” which precedes any artificial sense of self. In other words, rather than saying “I am a man/woman/human/king/pilot/etc.”, simply the impersonal sense of “I am”. That is the true self, which is the Universal Self. Therefore, your essential nature is Cosmic Consciousness, usually called “God” by theists (see also Chapter 10).
The Tao (The Reality [lit. The Way, The Path, or The Road]) which can be expressed in language is not the REAL Tao. All concepts are, by nature, relative, and at most, can merely point to the Absolute. That explains why some branches of theology use the apophatic method of discerning The Infinite (“neti neti”, [not this, not that], in Sanskrit). Also known in Latin as “via negativa” or “via negationis” theology, this philosophical approach to discovering the essential nature of Reality, gradually negates each description about Ultimate Reality, but not Reality Itself.
Ultimate Reality (“Brahman”, in Sanskrit) alone is real - “real” in the sense that it is the never-mutable substratum of ALL existence. The wisest of the philosophers of ancient India distinguished the “real” from the “unreal” (“sat/asat”, in Sanskrit) by whether or not the “thing“ was eternal or ephemeral (cf. Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 1:3:28, Bhagavad-gītā 2:16, et altri).
Gross material objects (such as one's own body) and subtle material objects (such as thoughts) are always changing, and therefore not “real”.
REALITY is clearly seen by those self-realized persons who have experienced spiritual awakenings (which occur either spontaneously, or after a gradual process over many months or years), yet only intellectually understood by those who have merely studied spiritual topics (that is, those who have practiced one of the four systems of religion described in Chapter 16 but have yet to awaken to their essential nature).

I was in coma for 4 months.... I remember my dreams... when i read my medical files, i learnt i almost died many times and remembering my dreams, i think i can pinpoint the actual moments i was dying... there were subliminals in the dreams. For example, i was in a room with a big clock. I could hear my stepdad from the outside in the real world telling me "just breathe just breathe." And i could hear it in the dream world... And i had a oh ish moment!!! I remembered I was dreaming and for how long??? I was in the dreamworld for so long that i thought it was the real world even tho it was an Alice in Wonderland type place... i realized holy ish, im dying... and i focused real hard willing myself to not die.
Another time i was dying in the hospital, my grandma was by my bedside. I felt her hands stroking my hair. She pressed her forehead against mine. Then my mom came in the room and said my grandma died a few hours ago. Her spirit visited me
.... the next few days i struggled to cling to Life.
I couldnt even reach over to grab my phone by the side of my bed. Suddenly, the room was bright white and a hand grabbed mine. It was my grandma. She was going to guide me to Heaven
I told her im not ready. Help me live... she let go....

I want to add something. Precognition of death is not only limited to dying person.
When my cousin died at the age of 16, I had precognition, but I didn't understand it. He died in a motor accident at the spot, all was perfectly normal prior to that. Two consecutive nights before his accidental death, I saw nightmares in which a person whom I didn't know was beaten brutally specially his one arm and skull has been smashed.
Same was his accident, his one arm and head was crushed under a heavy truck. And at that specific time when this accident happened I was thinking of my cousin, and wishing to visit him as we were long not met.
This doctor failed to discuss paranormal phenomena, which do exist. I am not making mention of the ones he listed.
This site is glorious. It gives me so much hope and strength.

In my experience, a minority of souls can get stuck, I think because they feel they don’t deserve to cross over or that they have a purpose to protect the living in some way. My belief is this If you are dead your supposed to cross over into the light . No one is supposed to be tortured or otherwise stuck.

I would think a psychopath, while not experiencing guilt, are so self-centered, they would have a tremendous difficulty giving up their ego upon death. They've their entire lives putting themselves first over everyone and everything.

I joined the Scientific and Medical Network 5 or 6 years ago where Peter is one of the founding luminaries . . . I wish I had seen these RUclips gigs by him earlier. We are a year different in age, having myself researched his subject since 1954 . . . it would have been my delight to share findings.

I think it's important to look at hellish NDEs in as much depth as heavenly ones, though. PMH Atwater has interviewed a considerable number of people who have had hellish NDEs. Nancy Evans Bush has also written an interesting account of her unpleasant NDE: Dancing Past the Dark.

I lost my dad when I was 14 as sat beside him holding his left hand and then his right hand slowly lift up like he grap someone else hand and then it drop and he past he was only 44 years old and died of cancer from smokeing.
I think of the brain as a receiver of consciousness, like a radio or tv receiver, that also filters what it receives. I think it is closer to a transmitter/receiver, a transceiver, of consciousness, as the information goes both ways.
My Nan pointed to the end of her hospital bed and said "I can see angels" shortly before she passed.
On BBC newsnight channel -Inside the Bataclan video, a young woman who survived the Bataclan attack says how she could feel people's souls leaving their bodies (at 9 minutes on the video). I personally almost died when I was a child (very long time ago) and I left my body briefly before a person saved my life.

I’d like to believe that there’s no hell but I’ve had a client that described his experience after being electrocuted and fell off a pole. He said it was a lot of screaming, crying, a loud grinding noises, and a horrible smell of rotting flesh. I’ve heard the same thing from other people. He said he kinda thought it was a dream but it was strong enough to where he changed his life for the most part.

Good documentary. Yes, the dying are seldom afraid of death as the Eternal spirits visit them and mentally connect with them. They know what is Beyond Death and are calm. Those who die from long sickness are often very calm..
