The Yellow Breeches: What I Learned Fly Fishing with a Baitcaster...

  • Hey everyone, in this video, I'll take you on my first journey to a fabled limestone trout stream in Pennsylvania, to chase not only elusive wild trout, but also try to find some smallmouth bass as well. Join me as I push my Kistler Hunt BFS rods to the limit int these gin-clear waters that are at 70-year record lows.
    It's the definition of tough fishing.
    A special shoutout to my fishing buddy on this adventure: Jimmy from ‪@rawrfishing‬ . Despite the challenges we faced, (including a crashed hard drive and recovering lost files for me), this trip turned out to be a memorable one.
    I'll discuss the importance of properly setting up your bait finesse rods and reels, and how I changed my set-up process, based on what I learned during this trip. This tip will help you maximize your casting distance and efficiency.
    So, if you're into BFS fishing or interested in how low these the Kistler BFS rods can go, this video is for you. Don't forget to check out the link in the description for more information on the Kistler Hunt BFS rods. Thanks for watching, and tight lines!

    These are the rods I used in the video, and that Jimmy and I were discussing my involvement in the design process with Kistler: www.aaronhunt.net/recommends/kistler-bfs/
    I truly think they are the best BFS rods on the market.

    @3:50 Loved targeting fallfish when I lived in Virginia for 5 years. For those who aren't aware, fallfish are actually North America's largest minnow species. That being said, I think the Virginia state record for fallfish was 22"(???). I was always trying to beat it, but the largest I ever caught (on an ultralight spinning combo with 4-lb fluoro and a tiny 1.5" Berkley minnow on a 1/16th jig head) was just over 18". They're nicknamed "Creek Tarpon" and after catching one that big, I know why. Probably the most difficult ultralight combo fish I've ever landed.

    • @AaronHuntFishing
      @AaronHuntFishing  5 месяцев назад +1

      I was excited, and kind of bummed I didn't catch any more - or any bigger. I'm sure in the coming years as I get to do more fishing east of the Alleghenies I'll get into some more.

      @@AaronHuntFishing they really are a blast. Most people consider them junk fish like a chubb, but if you set the hook on a larger one (>12"), it will definitely make you stop thinking about trout for a minute.

    great video. Interesting over the shoulder panoramic view, how did you do that i saw the shadow of the camera pole but then you walked through brush with out hanging up?

    • @AaronHuntFishing
      @AaronHuntFishing  5 месяцев назад

      Insta 360 X3 - I lowered the pole right before I went through the brush - that's when i dropped the microphone receiver. :P
      I'll be using the 360 even more this year. Have a little trouble-shooting to do with the stitching (maybe a firmware update or a setting), and need to do a couple reviews on it and some accesories.
      But it's been a cool addition to my filming gear.

    BFS is such a pain with light lures after about 20 casts. All the line on your spool loosens up and then its knots endlessly until you unspool all the line and re-spool it.

    • @AaronHuntFishing
      @AaronHuntFishing  5 месяцев назад +2

      I haven't expereinced that - but admittedly I only go super-light when conditions or fish warrant it. And only with rods and reels that are capable...

    • @AaronHuntFishing
      @AaronHuntFishing  5 месяцев назад

      Working on more fishing for sure. Didn't get all of the comment, but this is why some of my reviews take so long - I need to fish with them a while and figure out what I like and what isn't so great for each product in my opinion - for the way I fish. And sometimes - the fish don't cooperate. :P

    So how do you setup your gekkabijin? Spool tension and brakes. Interested to hear how you get the most out of it.

    • @AaronHuntFishing
      @AaronHuntFishing  5 месяцев назад

      pretty much like a traditional baitcaster. I start with a controlled rate of fall. If I'm starting fresh on a reel I set the brakes around mid. I make large adjustments on the intial set-up to get it close to what I expect to feel, then move either the tension or the brakes typically 1 click for fine adjustments. make a few casts, paying attention to the line fluff during the cast and at the end of cast. if that is non-existent, go down another click.
      If I get too much fluff mid or end of cast, I adjust the brakes or spool tension - respectively. make a few cats. if that's good, drop the other adjustment opposite of what i just increased. I rarely make forceful casts on set-ups designed and dialed in for light lures. But If i did, I'd want to bump the brakes up a couple clicks from the optimal, which is usually right on the edge of backlash for under 1 gram lures. If there would be a backlash at this point, it's probably minimal because of the low lure weight.
      I pretty much follow this approach on all my reels, tryignt o find the low limit of what it can cast well. But the 2g+ setups I usually put a couple clicks back in the brakes, and if I get any over-run at the end while I'm fishing I'll add a click or two of spool tension as well. I'd rather have 95% performance that handles a wide range of lures with no backlash and no adjustments than 100% on the hairy edge.
      The "side to side" method doesn't work reliably for me. And some reels it doesn't work at all due to the design. This method works all the time.
      And this is exactly what i was doing for the 5 minutes or so (which i edited down to seconds in the video) after i switched to the fly in the video. It was just the results after I went back to heavier lures that made me start doing this even on set-ups where I don't plan on fishing lighter lures. Once I get a reel dialed in, I'm rarely touching the brakes or spool tension until I respool with new line.

      @@AaronHuntFishing a lot of good info. Thanks for taking the time to type and explain how you dial things in. I’ve always thought it was weird to setup up a dynamic braked reel with side to side. Just seemed like less precise braking. I have the gekkabijin and had it set up with minimal side to side and brakes around 6-7. The casting was very controlled but the distance was a little short. I’ll have to try this method.

    Hello, man
    Can you help me determine power of fishing gear
    I want to try the same technique with baitcaster.
    Can you tell line power/rod power and weight of flies. Especially weight of a fly, may be you tell me what popular fly will fit for this? Or type of a fly that fits best

    • @AaronHuntFishing
      @AaronHuntFishing  5 месяцев назад

      Line was 0.6 GOH. Rod is rated for 0.75 Grams to 6 grams. The fly was 0.75 grams. Streamers / wooly buggers might work.
