Have you seen those Misleading Mobile Game Ads?
They're quite popular, usually showcase some sort of Pin Puzzle game with Liquids and Gas.
However the reality is if you click on them you end up in a mobile game that has nothing to do with the what is shown in the ads, usually it's a Match-3 game.
Anyways the idea shown in the ads did seem interesting so I thought why don't I try to turn that into reality.
And with that the Misleading Ads Game was made!

The node you're looking for in your shader is the lerp node, use you mask as the alpha and a color node as the B input.
No
Thank you. I hate those so much
Seeing that you are distributing this on steam does make me wonder whether you have considered adding workshop integration. Though a proof of concept the engine is there would be great if it could load levels as assets from the steam workshop. There is a lot of variety that could be accomplished with just the handful of default particle types, though could go even further if the ability to load custom particle scripts was available so that new and interesting interactions could be introduced. Seems like there is so much scope in the basic mechanics there. Also seems like this aligns well with your goal of introducing people to unity game development as it provides opportunities for smaller starter projects that make for a gentler learning curve to produce fun results and still get the satisfaction and feedback from sharing their creations. Lots of indie game developers do start out making things like mods for existing games as they are a great way to learn the needed skills with smaller-scale projects that are less overwhelming in scope which can be less daunting and feel more achievable for beginners.
Those ads are really annoying. 90% look like reskins of the same game.
ya but 90% of people can't beat it anyways

Omg finally!
I just couldn't understand why they put so much effort into making the fake ads instead of simply making the game!
Because there aren't much, if any in-game purchase (pay2win or pay2not-suffer) machanism in a puzzle game. Besides, as mentioned in the video, puzzle design need expertise, which is not cheap (I am taking about at least several dozens to make it a resealable sized game)
it is not infinitely playable. you need to literally have someone sitting down thinking up more and more creative ways to ramp up the challenge. That means each level at some point must be painstakingly crafted or people get bored.
Just allow players to create levels for other players...
@@Ockerlord for a mobile game? thats not going to happen. on pc it might but even then theres no guarantee people will flock to design new levels.
@@funsterkeyven people can make levels in certain mobile games lol why act like that’s not even possible? Especially if you make the user interface super simplistic. As in, “Put lava pit here.” “Put water pit here.” “Put Pin here going this direction” “put character here” “put enemy here” “put pin here.” That is certainly doable for a mobile game lol it doesn’t have to be some complex editor where you have unlimited creative control. Just limit the player in what they can and can’t do and that alone would be fun for people
"tiny spheres and shaders" is literally how liquids are rendered in reality too, so good job on the realism

@@PRAMODKUMAR-lr7dy what's wrong with having no likes and replies?

@@CodeMonkeyUnity It's a hog in certain scenarios with an engine specifically written to handle particle interactions and terrain destruction, in native, well-optimized code. I don't see how anything but a mediocre version of it could be written in Unity, even with DOTS.
no wonder it destroys my fps xD
Somehow, the thing that always bugs me most about those ads isn't them being misleading, it's them always showing the player failing.
They add titles like 'can you do better?" To reel us in because of course we can do better than those dumbos.
Sometimes they make a level that is actually impossible to complete
@@PixelSubstream Not if you partially pull a pin. Some ARE legit impossible, but a whole lot can be done with a partial pull in the solution.

But then they would not be able to read it.
You should turn this into a commercial game, then use the other games actual footage for your ads.
Then count to ten for the Cease and Dedist xD

If this had a level editor I can see this actually getting big.
Yeah like Super Mario Run it would've been better if you could build your own levels instead of LITERALLY PLANTING FLOWERS IN A FRICKING PLATFORMER
@@filipfilip1507 it seems that you may be interested in Super Mario Maker.
@@stevenbobbybills yeah I like it but a mobile Mario game will have cooler gimmick
@@filipfilip1507 it really wouldn't. The Nintendo Switch is already a portable console and it has more power than most smartphones, so there's no reason for a mobile phone game to have more unique features from a commercial or power perspective. Mario Run's gimmicks are that it isn't on a Nintendo console and that you play it with one input, if they added much more it could start to cannibalise their profits from the Switch Lite.
I was thinking the same thing, as soon as i saw there wasnt a level editor, i was like 'what a waste', of course, there could be one implemented?
Funny enough some of the misleading ads actually have playable demos with the pin mechanics. So I don’t understand why they didn’t just publish the game as it’s advertised, they clearly had a working version of it.

Because the goal and function of those videos is to get people to click on ads and the goal and function of most of these games is also to get people to click on ads.

One thing about the liquid particles: Try to get the topmost layer to even out - same with gas and the bottom layer.

You could separate the liquids in the shader by having one color channel per liquid, so one liquid in red, one in blue and one in green. Then you split the colors to get the mask.

now the misleading game people will start making these games actually xD
I think one of the companies that were banned in the UK actually did do that, they had to make some mini-games just like what is shown in the ads to continue advertising. The core of the game is still a Match-3 but every once in a while you get one of these pin puzzle mini-games.
.. and market them with yet another set of fake ads. 😂😂😂

I'm realizing after seeing some gameplay this kinda reminds me of "Where's My Water?"
Anyways, great videos; you have earned a new subscriber!
I still don't get, why anyone is using those ads. They're literally everywhere.
Seems like this effect of "this looks easy, I could do this" works good in terms of marketing. But the actual games are too easy, so you you only show it in the ads but not put it in the actual game.
Must be a trojan horse, a bug or malware in the Matrix
It's because There are companies that make and sell these ads for app makers to slap their logos on, they're not tied directly to the product.
If you make a game look better than it is then someone is bound to get it. Then they’ll see the 6,000,000 ads they push on you in 3 seconds time so they’ve already earned money for a game that was cheaper than the marketing.
It probably works, like raid shadow legends paying random youtubers, there are enough dumb people that end up giving them money

Very interesting. I hadn't seen those ads at all, but the process was really interesting. I made a similar interactive particle system like 25 years ago for DOS... and it was really easy. So I'm surprised the task took so much effort in Unity. I guess I need to update my skills and learn a modern platform!
You would be legendary if you made a level editor for this.
When I see those ads, I tend to remember the game if I see it in the future somewhere.
I then, remembering the misleading ad, immediately decide I won’t bother checking out the game just because associated with misleading ads.
Maybe it works to generate many downloads, but it sure as heck drives people like me away.
“Pull Him Out” has this as one of its main game mechanics.
Honestly the talk about making mistakes and how many different approaches you tried to get the liquids working was incredibly encouraging. You're told that every developer gets stuck and makes mistakes but its easy to get lost in your head and start thinking that you have more problems than everyone else.
I have never seen such an ad, concept seems really very interesting to create some great fun to play levels! This concept actually has a lot of potential! And you remade it very well!

Video where you do mistakes is most welcome tho. It's actually fun to watch when you do actual problem solving in real time. And it really helps others who are just getting into programming to see what kind of resources you use to solve particular problem.
I have this exact thought every time I watch a mobile ad. Its the zombie survival/city builders that I really want to make.
My favorite fake add is "Don't fart." Or "Lean in and take a sniff." It's an episode add that I've genuinely want to see that episode.
"Illegal due to being misleading."
They should be illegal because they LIE, not misleading.
But its sorta the same thing?? Misleading is quite literally leading the watcher to think that something shown is true (ex. Scam ads) when in reality it isnt... and lying is leading someone to think something false is true.
Literally the same thing.
"Lying" is just being deliberately misleading. If you make a rule that says "don't lie", people can defend themselves by saying "you need to prove it was a deliberate lie, otherwise I did nothing wrong". If you make a rule that says "don't be misleading", they can't pull that nonsense -- it doesn't matter if you did it on purpose or not; stop doing it.
@person person A loophole is that some of them actually have pull the pin things as minigames now.
They are not lies. They are mini games that take a while to get to within the real game.
I can't remember ever actually seeing an ad that matches in-game for mobile.

I have actually found a lot of ads that match the game itself
The problem is that the actually very very good mobile games don't have ads and are deep in the "indie" section of google play.

From what I read, the original ones were in some kind of idle heroes game, but only on rare occasion, when completing something, not the actual gameplay.
I used to think you also went too fast on your videos, but after a long time of watching I am thankful for your time and effort put into your videos.
Yup it's all part of the natural learning process, in the beginning everything seems complex no matter the speed, but then as you become more experienced things start to make a lot more sense and much easier.
Personally I watch most tutorials at 2x speed unless it's something extremely complex like the inner working or Machine Learning.

In another game that uses this mechanics, the lava-water problem solves programming lava and water to become stone when they touch the other element OR a previously created stone
The gas physics is very cool, it would make for a cool addition to a game where you have to travel under water freeing air lines to create pockets of breathable air to continue moving along.
