Legal Indian Territory In Bangladesh -
There is legal Indian territory in Bangladesh due to unfair partition of Assam in 1947. Sylhet was a native Bengali district in Assam. In 1947 a referendum was held in the district so as to decide whether the district would remain within India or would join Pakistan. Not enough voting polls were provided and those that were provided were located in the Muslim majority areas. As a result the Hindus could not vote properly. Around 56% votes were caste in favor of Pakistan and the remaining 44% in favor of India. Sylhet district of Assam was partitioned on the basis of the pattern of voting in the referendum. Therefore 56% of Assam’s Sylhet district was given to Pakistan and 44% to India. The actual map where Sir Cyril John Radcliffe demarcated the border within Sylhet district is available. One can very easily see that only 56% of the district was given to former East Pakistan. But in reality India received only 12.8% which is present Karimganj district of Assam. The rest 31.2% is in Bangladesh. It should be noted that this 31.2% area is legal Indian territory even after the Land Boundary Agreement between India and Bangladesh. The Agreement is about enclaves where as this 31.2% area is not an enclave and hence still Indian territory. As per the Land Boundary Agreement India lost around 40 sq. Km. Where as the 31.2% of Sylhet district is an area of 4692 sq. Km. This 31.2% of Assam's former Sylhet district is called as 'Sribhumi'. The matter was raised by the then Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha Late Suresh Deb and Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha Late Bhupesh Gupta. Late Mahitosh Purkayastha, M.P. (R.S. 1966-72); eminent educationist and Member of Parliament Late Professor Jogendra Kumar Choudhury, had also raised the issue repeatedly in the parliament and outside. The Barak Upatyoka Bongo-Sahitya O Songskriti Sonmellan, represented by the then General Secretary Late Premendra Mohan Goswami, (Principal, Narshing H.S School, Silchar) and President Late Mahitosh Purkayastha, ex-MP; ex-MLA, along with Shri Iresh Ranjan Bhattacharjee submitted petition to Late Rajiv Gandhi, Prime Minister of India and others concerned at Delhi in the year 1985. In 2017 a memorandum was submitted to the honorable Prime Minister of India Sri Narendra Modi, Sri Rajnath Singh and Late Sushma Swaraj through the then honorable Governor of Assam Sri Banwarilal Purohit. It has been over 70 years since the partition of India yet a part of our homeland which is legally Indian territory is still within Bangladesh. We want justice from the Indian Government.
