This is interesting. Thank you. I’ve also heard it explained that the first time, the striking of the rock, represents the brutal death of Christ. That the way to receive forgiveness of sins, and Living Water, is through striking/bloodshed. First with animals, then ultimately with Jesus’ blood. Then, the speaking to the rock is how- after the payment of sins, through Christ’s blood- we need only to believe and confess with our mouths (speaking), that Jesus is Lord, for us to receive the Living Water. No striking the Rock twice. Once, for all.
That was a brief and rushed explanation, but maybe it makes sense.

Despite belligerence, insolence and failure to properly follow God’s instructions, Moses was deeply loved by God who knew before time existed how Moses would behave. When Moses died, God Himself tended to his funeral, burying him in a place where no man will ever find him. I am unable to think of any higher honor.

Also I believe because God knew that Moses knows him and loves him he didn’t want the Israelites to cross over and praise Moses for it he wanted them to repent of their ways and trust that He God brought them out of the land of slavery and start believing in him and not have Moses always bringing them to him. He wanted them to depend of him completely.

Interesting perspective and details as always Brandon. In my daily study even today, in Deuteronomy 32:51 God is clear that He saw this event as a betrayal by Moses and Aaron. For myself, I always thought based on Numbers 27:9-10 that it was that Moses and Aaron, not only disobeyed the command, but then said this: "must WE bring you water out of this rock?" - In this moment they assumed it was their power that would give the community the water, they stole God's glory in that moment and forgot where the power really came from - and they did it in front of the community.

My friends, you are correct that Mosheh did not obey nor give glory to our Heavenly Father, but one more thing that is very important, and that is Faith, for:
      1) Mosheh did not trust Yah but used the staff instead because it had worked before!
      2) He did not do what is right - To give glory to Whom it is belong...
For Yah clearly said "You did not trust Me to hallow Me in the sight of beni Yasar'el"
And Yes - His Name is Yah as in "hallelu Yah" which you sing & praise Him all your life without knowing just as prophesied, but after His return you will know this is true, for He said "Afterward My people will know My Name" as Yah told us in Yashayahu (aka Isaiah) 52:6 - HalleluYah!!! @@invisableangel80

So many Christians don't even understand why they had to wander for 40 years. You can take the Hebrews out of Egypt, but taking the Egypt out of the people was a far more difficult task. Many don't understand the 10 Commandments, were more loving than restrictive, attempting to do the same.

He and Aaron gathered the people and said... " Must WE..." WE.. bring water from this rock.
Moses took credit.... Moses did not glorify the LORD, who gives us water, and everything else, according to our needs.
MOSES refused to give credit and glory to God....
He spoke as if was his own power that brought water.
It was like... After everything I (Aaron and I ) have done for you...
    It was ONE word.

"He chose the way of Pharaoh." That's one of the best insight I've ever heard to this moment in the bible that seems brutally unfair. Another I've heard that pairs perfectly with this insight, is that God wanted Moses (and the Israelites) to move beyond the power of God being manifested in and through the staff (an inanimate object), but to believe that God's presence and power was intended to indwell them in their hearts and words.

There is a lot of "Assuming" when it's not needed.
“Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?”
Who are the "We" in this statement? Moses and Aaron working a miracle? God needs help? Moses is now equal to God?
32 They angered Him also at the waters of strife,
    So that it went ill with Moses on account of them;
33 Because they rebelled against His Spirit,
So that he spoke rashly with his lips. ~ Psalms 106
" Spoke rashly" ? So it wasn't striking the rock but something that he said. Brings it back to the "We" doesn't it?

Although love your teachings, this time I think you miss a very important scripture that seems to me to be the real reason Moses can’t enter the promised land. After all he has disobeyed before but this time he went beyond disobedience to stealing Gods glory. “When Moses said “shall WE bring water from the rock? “Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?””
    ‭‭Numbers‬ ‭20‬:‭10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

God word, but it's much deeper than that:
According to 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 (Christ was the Rock that followed the children of Israel in their 40 years journey in the wilderness). Water is the symbol of life in the bible (remember 'rivers of living water'?). Jesus (the Rock) had to be smitten only once to provide everlasting life (water) to us. He will never have to be smitten again.
When God told Moses to speak to the rock, it was a shadow of what was to come. From the Cross (where the 'rock' was 'smitten') and forward, if you need life (healing etc.) speak (ask, declare) to the rock. When he smote the rock the second time, he symbolic sacrificed Christ again and hence disregarded the previous and final sacrifice and therefore cannot enter the holy land (heaven).

I think I read that, but I didn’t put it together.
What I see from the story is you can’t hit sheep or they will scatter. You do have to drive goats, but usually the flail is used for this, not the rod. Sheep only will come when called by a shepherd they have come to know. The rod is used as a deterrent from heading in a direction.
I learned a lot about sheep by driving through mountains in Colorado. Trying to get to work, those year old lambs are so cute, but they can be very difficult to keep together and move off the road. Lol.
What do you think the significance of the rod of presence? Was it to represent moving from a king, Moses, to being a nation under priest? And priest don’t beat they communicate?

I want to add that the term 'sanctified' is misunderstood. Compare the word Holy to Wholly, wholly being not so common. But what is being eluded to here is the idea that the LORD 'works' through 'creating' (speaking), and 'forming and making' (works). In one instance the Lord (not God or Lord God) wanted Moses to use 'works', and in the other to 'speak'.
Use Isaiah 45:7 (KJV) as an example to see the contrast between 'creating' vs. 'forming and making'... they are NOT the same thing.
Notice that God 'created' man... while Lord God 'formed' man.
When you read in Genesis, where man has become as (1) of us... knowing 'good AND evil', it is LORD GOD that knows 'good and evil' as GOD does NOT know (author) 'evil'.

The Rock symbolized Adam. By striking the Rock once, it not only gave water to the people, but also made the condition for the messiah to come. BUT, by striking the Rock twice, it meant that if the Jewish people rejected the messiah, Lucifer could attack and kill the messiah. UNFORTUNATELY, they did reject him and Lucifer murdered him.

It was explained differently to me by a Bible teacher who said that the rock represented Jesus Christ and since Moses struck it once the first time and struck it twice the second time which he was not supposed to do was saying that Jesus Christ was going to be crucified three times for our salvation instead of one time only. That is a lie in God's eye and a serious sin. In Moses not representing Jesus' mission properly made His Father very angry and that is why he was denied to enter the promised land for only this one disobedience. God is not a respecter or has a preference for anyone.
This message is also a warning for us all that if we commit one sin and die without repenting of that sin we will go to hell period even if we did many good things in life.
But it also could be a good thing for Moses in a way as well. First, he saw a vision of how the promised land would look in the future. I can also say it is a blessing. He will finally be released and free from all the trouble he went through for 40 years in the desert from constant complaining and bickering by the Israelites and now will die in peace and rest in the real promised land of God in paradise.
One thing for sure is that his grave is not known where it is, and God made sure to keep it a secret so no one could come to his gravesite and worship him or make a shrine in his name.

Yeshua is the ROCK. 1 Corinthians 10:4 "and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ." He was smitten, once. After the Cross, we have only to speak to our ROCK, to obtain the "water of life" which flows from Him.

Moses spoiled the symbolic prophecy of Messiah. He lost his temper and misrepresented Christ. That is why he was not allowed to lead Israel across the Jordan, into the land. That job was for Yeshua, symbolized by Joshua (same name in the Hebrew).

"and did all eat the same spiritual food; and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ."
Possibly the first.time Moses struck the rock God was standing beside it.The last time the spiritual Rock was Christ, and Moses dishonored G-d by striking the Rock.

That is a ridiculous explanation. And don't tell me that if you were Moses spending 40 years, do you hear me 40 years in the desert! You're telling me that we should all just that striking a rock egregious enough to cost you entering the promised land after 40 years in the desert with people who threaten your life, complain, come to you constantly for answers you don't have. And you've done this.p has asked you to do you're a Man advanced an age who has served the Lord faithfully for 40 years, you think that there's nothing in the least concerning about this. My question to you is are we sure that the God that the Hebrews are serving is the one true God, and not one of the mini gods that the Hebrews served - which we know is a historical fact. Because I can't reconcile many of the stories of God in the Old Testament with the God of the due Testament and any rational, thinking person would ask themselves if the Hebrews were polytheistic know that the Old Testament isn't speaking of one of the lesser gods. Because when you do this when you look deeper for truth, it all begins to make sense.

Another take on this story is that Moses spoke to the people (with contempt) instead of "speaking to the rock before their eyes". Apparently striking the rock twice reflected Moses's heart of contention. However, Moses already sinned prior to striking...as well as failed to display God's mercy the way he intended.

    Anyway, that's what I heard.

Moses was following Yahweh, which is Jehovah and Egyptian deity. After 40 years people got tired of running by faith, so they started walking by sight God was not providing feeding them with water or food. They got mad I would When they got to the promised land speak truth!! there was already people living there but it took 40 years for Moses to get to a place. Filled with people of city.
As the Canaanites were the putatively “native” inhabitants of the land before Israel arrived, and, as we saw above, in fact persisted alongside (or as) Israel during the biblical period writ broadly, then it stands to reason that the general inheritors of “Canaanite culture” would be anyone who lived on in the land Moses was led by the false God

17 Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John, the brother of James, up on a high mountain by themselves.
2 While they watched, Jesus’ appearance was changed; his face became bright like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3 Then Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus.

Amazing perspective and insiight. I always thought Moses could not enter into the promise land bec.... one- The rock was Jesus. Two.. when Moses cried out Must 'I.'.. the I showing pridefulness. I always thought Moses was striking Jesus, which caused him not to enter. After all he was told to speak this time to the rock. And Jesus is our Rock.
I get this mans point of view. And its the very first time I heard it interpreted that way.
I love Jesus. Although It really seems harsh at the same time. Forgiive me for saying so. sometimes our emotions get the best of us; and yet were told to tame our tongue in all manners. Im the first, admiting I really needed to hear this. NOT TO ENTER??? .. LION AND TIGERS OH MY.
I just had an earlier encounter, similar.. wish I saw this first. A moments peace ( is all that it brings..that release of our emotions; words spoken which can cause us not to receive them blessings Gods promised.
This is Satans ensnarement. May we all take heed in such moments I pray.. in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
Forgive me Father this day. Amen!

Here is some fun things to think about too. First, a POSSIBLE foreshadowing of Yeshua being the rock and the living water as both of these have been used to reference him. The first time he came, what happen? He was beaten. Though, if Moses would of done exactly what he was told to, what picture of a foreshadowing would this of been? Perhaps this could be a shadow picture of what will happen when Yeshua returns?
Secondly, and this one is a bit more harsh. Many times in was could be called "Moses sermon", that being Deuteronomy, Moses gives instructions to this new generation of Israelites that goes directly against the instructions from YHVH. When you have spent 40 years around a stiff-neck people, I'm sure anyone would be rather annoyed at that point. Moses was not in a physical shape to have passed away but still YHVH made him pass on the top of the mountain. What then, when happen if Moses were to of stayed with Israel? If, at this time 40 years later, Moses is giving instructions that goes against YHVH, what worse could come. This isn't to say anything bad about Moses at all but to bring insight into scripture and Torah. Moses was chosen for this, no one else, so I don't think there is a single person that could of done better. There is the fact that we can see the pattern in scripture, all of scripture, even in the "New Testament" that those who are closer to YHVH are held to a higher standard.

i think its more important who the rock is, not what moses has done to HIM. Who is the Rock? and why it was such a big deal to GOD that moses struck him a second time?
33But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. the rock is JESUS and that was all forshadowing of his sacrifice. thatswhy its such big deal that moses struck him a second time. he basicly killed him a second time.

The Rock was to symbolize Christ. When Moses was commanded by God the second time to speak to the Rock. Moses did not listen to God’s instructions and therefore he and his people ended up wondering for another 38 years. Moses disobeyed God and was not allowed into the promised land. Moses was 120 years of age when he died. He was an Egyptian Prince for 40 years, a shepherd for 40 years and the leader of his people for 40 years.

There is another level of meaning: Moses represents the Torah (the law), which cannot lead us into heaven. This is because we are all sinners and there has been no perfect sacrifice. But Yoshua, who represents Yahshua, the Messiah, our High Priest, is leading us into heaven. He is the perfect sacrifice.

    What about this?
    John 4:10
"Jesus answered her, 'If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.'"
The rock seems to represent Jesus, who had to be violently sacrificed as the ultimate atonement, and who, when we ask him, and trust him, and confess (speak) to Him, that we believe and follow Him as the only way to be forgiven, He is the Rock that provides us with the water we ask for, the Living Water. The water that gives us eternity with God.
I could elaborate more, but, this is another possible, important representation of the importance of speaking to the Rock, our Savior, to submit to Him and confess our sins and confess that we need Him and only Him.
