- Flattening your island can be really overwhelming.
Sometimes you're not really sure how or where to get started.. So in today's video I'm sharing some tips & tricks I've learned after flattening and rebuilding my island several times. I got some pretty good comments on my last video of wether you should flatten or restart your island which inspired me to dive more deep to this topic!
I'm also giving you guys a sneak peek of what I've been working on over on my foresty theme northern hemisphere island 🌲
🪓 Ps. Obviously these are just some tips that have helped me out and these are not the only way to go so if something else works for you, definitely go with that! This video is mainly for if you don't know how/where to get started! And if you have any additional tips to share feel free to do so in the comments! 🤗

I can't express how helpful the starting from the back of the map tip is. Not only does it make it easier to map out how much room you have as you said, but it just makes doing landscaping that relys on perspective so much easier as the camera is always facing North, and so you can see what you're doing as you work your way to the front of the map and make some AMAZING viewpoints. Thank you so much - it's literally made landscaping after resetting 5x easier for me

I have huge respect for anyone that flattened their island.
I simply couldn't do that, let alone a restart. No, just no.
My island is very simple, very open, not much terraforming, but I just love it so SO MUCH. ><
But really, if you feel like you have to take that step, then do it and good luck. 8)
That's is kinda nice though as well! I wish I'd still remember how my map looked like before I terraformed/flattened it but I don't think I even have a picture of it anywhere... Anyways, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and it has been a learning experience at least! 😆

For me flattening is the worst part, but once it was done I’m having a lot of fun. Kind of regretting it though because I’m super bad at terraforming

I did too so I’ll eventually have to move my stores and some other buildings. I’m going to change up my strategy and go to the back because I do know I want my museum there. I hate having to remove two of my inclines, though. 😭
I started at the front too, and now I’m frustrated. Like she said I have soooo many gaps, that I don’t know what to do with. I’m still building my island, but I’m going to flatten soon. I only like one area.
I'm making my island based on northern Sweden with a cottage core aspects, I'm not Swedish myself but sweden is basically my second home and was the only inspiration i had 😅
I’ve been playing (without terraforming) for a year now so I decided to flatten and start from scratch, I never knew how much of a big project it would be! I’m feeling pretty intimidated and these tips helped me feel better. Thanks for the great video!

These tips are amazing! I have no plan flattening my island because I just restarted it (I feel like flattening is too overwhelming), but your tips still work for me. I feel like these are very helpful decorating tips in general. Especially the using reference photos one! As an artist, we are always told to use reference photos to improve our art, so it just makes sense to use it in animal crossing as well. More people in general should watch this video. I'm glad I stumbled into this.
I have flattened my island in 2 days. I repeat 2 days 😅 now I have the biggest animal crossing burnout, I blame it on snow 😰

It can be a lot! And probably easiest is if you can terraform & build the island one bit at a time and not flatten the whole thing... But in case you decide to go with flattening the whole thing, I hope some of these tips help! 🤗

Yeah, it's been difficult for me because as much as I've been following design tips and finding pictures online, no one decorates exactly the way I do. haha So I see a picture that's really pretty, but I know it would drive me nuts to have it like that on my own island. I'm too much of a neat freak that loves symmetry and big clean spaces to walk around in. lmao so i've ended up doing my own thing, and its not so bad. Just takes longer without inspiration

I restarted my island about a month ago after having my old one for several months. It was definitely needed, because the amount of work it would've taken to flatten my old island was too much. I just flatten my current island and which was really satisfying. Thanks so much for the tips!

tysm 4 the tips!! for anyone who sees this one of my best tips is to literally just flatten a tiny section in the back and terraform it, while you still have the whole rest of ur island. then flatten the next section over and terraform that, etc. that way if you're unhappy with how it looks your whole island isn't lost and you can put it back to the way it was!!😊 also keep the houses, buildings, etc away until you finish the terraforming. this helps a lot and once your island layout is done you can mark where the buildings are going to be and decorate around them. once everything is ready and all you need are the houses, shops, etc then you can place them!! i don't know, this might not be everyone's way to go but this definitely helped me

I am so glad that I am not the only one who keeps flattening my island and restarting. I literally finished my island 3 times now, but I am so indecisive and end up not liking it- so I keep starting over. WHY AM I LIKE THIS?!

I restarted my island because i was just so frustrated and burnt out with the layout of my airport and resident services, etc. got three stars last week and now I’m working on flattening it out for the ultimate reset. I've never flattened my island but I found some interesting acnh videos on RUclips on how to make diagonal roads and it blew my mind. So checking out custom designs or ways to work with the basic constraints like diagonal paths can help alot.
You've blown my mind-one of the best videos I've ever seen. Thank you so much!!! I recently started playing again after 2 years and two years ago I did just that, I flattened my whole island. I tried to redo it, got frustrated, demotivated then just gave up because it wasn't fun anymore-just stressful to be honest. I Didn't have the heart to scrap it because I am (silly enough) attached to my villagers so got another switch to have a separate Island and now it's just a lot more fun to play.
I still have my old Island on my original switch and your video has motivated and inspired me to try it again. Thank you so much!!!

You are so relatable and I loved the fact that just didn’t flex your 5 star island as most of the animal crossing youtubers does and expect you to replicate their success with some basic tips, this was by far the most helpful video I found on what to do with my island, I’m glad I didn’t start yet cuz the “start from the back” tip really saved me from making tons of decoration mistakes

I honestly flattened my island within a week. If you just put an hour or two everyday to flattening your island, you can do it! I believe in y’all. ❤️

5:50 is my biggest problem. I literally made my campsite, then I moved onto my entrance then my Able Sisters and Nook’s Cranny area and it got me burnt out. Thank you so much for these tips! They help so much, and I’ll definitely be keeping this all in mind when I continue designing my island.

I flattened my first island, got so overwhelmed and left it for months. I just restarted, and still on the fence about if I want to flatten or not. This video at least makes me feel more at ease about the idea.
Honestly, I may just use existing cliffs as a starting place, but there were some helpful tips in here I can still use 😊
We just flattened last week and OMG it took so long but thankfully hubby took turns with me 😂❤ We've already got a couple of map squares filled but that's only because I knew exactly what I wanted to start with.

I know what you mean about awkward spaces. That's been my biggest issue! And yes, when I start in the front or middle, I end up blocking the area I want to build behind it.

Previously I was struggling a lot trying to build everything around my plaza. But when I started from the left corner, as you show in the video, everything started falling into place I guess. Like you said without this awkward empty areas.
I was planning on leaving my museum as it is, just moving it one tile to the left so it can be attached to the new stargazing area. And I moved it temporarily below the corner I started building at and I decided to the left museum there because I liked it more and it opened the ocean on the back of my island, where I wanted to place my house.💙

There are obviously a lot of different ways to rebuild your island but at least most of these helped me a lot the second time around rebuilding my island (first time I also started around the plaza/airport and that didn't work out for me)

oh god i HATE those awkward empty spaces in between areas that u cant do anything with because they're too small or have a weird shape and i have so many of those, i'll probably end up flattening once i've gotten the most out of the new update, thanks for the video!!

Starting from the back seems like SUCH a good idea!!!! I was thinking about flattening my island because I have a lot of straight lines and empty places I don’t like, I have small areas that I really like but I can not figure out how to connect everything together!!! I do feel pressure to finish my island fast, I need to remember AC is intended to be a slow game. I struggle really hard choosing between overgrown fairy core and city street neighborhoods 😫😫😫
why not do both! have an overgrown fairy core area of your island which is for all of your nature paths, villager houses etc, and then have a transition into a more city feel with the shops and residential services :)

I just flattened my island. (And in one day >.> ) I have an idea for what I want to do, but I just don’t know how to start or how to focus in on the idea exactly. I’m personally going for a deep forest/mountainous countryside style. :p So the video is super helpful for me
I've been thinking about giving up and resetting and I think that's a sign that I need to flatten and start over because I take it in chunks and that means that large portions of my island end up unfinished. I might as well just bite the bullet and move everyone onto the beach.
Just started flattening my island, hoping to be done by the end of the week but it is so painful 😭😭 Ive had my island for almost 4 years now and even though it is so god damn ugly (weeds everywhere because Im too lazy to pick them, stuff cluttering up the beaches, pollution is insane lol) it really hurts my soul to get rid of it just because ive had it for so long :') I think its time though. i'm only on my 5th day of the game, and i am so ready to be able to design my island how i want
I restarted my island. While decorating I started in the middle of the front of my island. My residence services is towards the front right of my island with my river mouths being middle right and far bottom left. I built a tanabata walkway from my airport leading to my residence services and then built from there. I decided connecting the shops to the area and created some small spaces. I feel that new items are coming that will make a huge impact on my areas and might to to redecorate those spaces. Maybe I can reduce the repetition of certain items and create a more spacious area on the sides of the walkways. So, my projects are on Hold until the new update and DLC comes out. Also, I am out of bamboo! 😢😢😢

I love how you gave permission to copy others. Most of us are not going to be showing our island to the world so it shouldn’t matter. Also most artists have copied a famous artwork in order to learn! As long as you aren’t making any money from someone elses work then I can’t see the problem. In fact it is a great idea I am going to do this!

Great tips! I flattened mine last week and all I’ve been doing is decorating the beaches and rocky areas and breeding flower hybrids. I reached 5-star status a few days ago so I’ve been kinda waiting for Lily of the Valley to bloom in case my island drops while I’m re-doing it.

Also even with just regular island decorating, I know for a fact my biggest downfall is island envy. I see people’s islands when I trade stuff on Nookazon and just feel immediately defeated. It just makes me feel like not playing.

I completely get that! I try so hard not to compare my island to other’s & these days I don’t even watch island tours/speed builds anymore because of that exact reason 🙈 it’s difficult not to compare... but I always tell myself my island is for me and as long as I’m having fun that’s honestly what matters 🤗
On my 4th flattening😞 i dont flatten for island themes and stuff i flatten because im aiming for comfort on my island , i wanna be happy with my little town but everytime i finish , a month later im tired of looking at it and not happy :"(

Big tip: If you have snowmen on your island blocking your way, time travel to yesterday.
I’ve been considering flattening mine, but I’m low on bells from moving stuff all over. I had too much area for just my house, so I started changing from the back left corner where my house was and started working forward in quarters. Right now I’m okay with the left quarter, but I have a river mouth there (I have a crappy island design) and I can’t get to that tiny area of beach there. And rivers aren’t flowing right to me. I’m frustrated and annoyed. I have some areas I don’t want to touch and get rid of, but I’ll need to do that if I want to spread out my villagers more. Right now they’re too packed together.
Uuuf ~ island designing can really be so frustrating! I think you're doing the smart thing and working one little area at a time instead of flattening the whole thing! That probably is the best and least overwhelming thing to do! You got this 💪 slowly but surely!
I also wasted soo much money bc I had to move two buildings twice bc I didn't end up liking the location... goshh all the bells I've wasted redesigning my island 😆

i wanna keep my island flat, my main problem is that my rs is close enough to the airport that its hard to do much of an entrance (i think its 5 spaces back and the right side of rs is one space to the left) but far enough away, or rather, in too much of an awkward spot, to incorporate it into my entrance
i'm trying to redo my island but i'm still not done moving buildings away to the beach e.e sigh.. but i'd personally like starting with road layout since it was the main thing i didn't like earlier, i've also..tried..to plan the island layout using fanmade tools, but...yeah prolly not gonna end up 100% like that xD

I understand on a game called bloxburg I would copy at first but now I'm very good in my opinion at building landscapes and houses in that game in my own unique way
I got animal crossing, completely missed the "town hall cannot be moved once it's placed" information, just placed it randomly, but now after getting three stars and flattening/emptying my entire island I only THEN realized that I couldn't move town hall...
I'm thinking of messing with NHSE (Mod) to artificially move my town hall to where I want it to fit my vision, but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

i'm so conflicted with flattening my island. I feel like I never have room for anything yet simultaneously it feels so empty at the same time, but thhere are still some areas thhat I'm really happy with. I just dunno what to do ;o;

I’ve just flattened my island (again lmao) because I’m so close to being done with my critipedia. If I wasn’t, I would probably have restarted. I just have one thing I refuse to change, and that’s my rock garden 😂 it took waaaay too long for me to smash those precious rocks to pieces
