  • Curious on how to apply stencils to fake practice skin??
    In this video I share with you all my approach I take when applying tattoo stencils (to silicone fake skin)
    Practice skin is a very good material to practice tattooing on, but from my experience getting the actual stencil to stick around long enough to pull a few lines was tough in the beginning.
    What I have learned and now do is I will place my stencil or stencils all down on the silicone skin and I let them sit for about 12-24 hours. Practically on a real tattoo on human skin you would want to let set for about 20-25 mins, in my opinion the longer the better.
    You will notice that when you let the stencil sit this long on the practice you can wipe the stencil off but you will still be left with a lighter version of the outline. On silicone skin the stencil doesn't fully come off unless submerged for a period of time in bleach.
    Me personally I love the fact that the stencil binds and sticks to the silicone in this manor because it allows me to finish the entire tattoo without having to worry about losing the stencil.
    This also allows me to really focus on on other techniques such as pulling lines, shading, etc.
    In this video I am using a silicone fake skin. If you are interested in these specific practice skins I will go ahead and link you to the product page here amzn.to/3as9L4r

      Maaaaan when I first started applying stencils to practice skins I would use the rubber felt material skin and it was so messy and such a pain to just work with in general.
      I had to find tune my process so everything flows the way I see fit. So now I use silicone felt practice skins and I allow my stencil to sit prior to the tattoo. This approach definitely takes more time but has yet to let me down.
      Once I get the ratios right and the stencil on the skin the way I need it it’s all just taking my time and running those lines.

    I been trying to find out if you have to have an apprenticeship before you can have your own shop?

    • @DanielYuck
      @DanielYuck  3 года назад +4

      That’s a good question!
      I don’t know an exact answer as there are many many variables to consider as well as stipulations.
      What I mean by that is some tattooist progress quicker over others, some are able to get an apprenticeship and some aren’t.
      I think 1 would be ready to get into a shop when the skill sets and practices are of a certain caliber. I don’t think there are golden rules stating 1 would have to have an apprenticeship prior to owning a shop, more so 1 would have to have the correct and appropriate skill sets to correctly and effectively run a shop.
      I hope this helps in some way shape or form.

    Hey Daniel I’m literally a beginner! I’m confused as to how to actually create the stencil itself. I know some people use the printer, but how do you just draw it? Can you use any photo and just trace over it? What kind of markers do artists use to draw the stencil itself? I was reading I need to buy a dip pen, whatever that is? Stencil fluid? Then something about a fine tipped ink pen? I thought they drew with markers? Please help! I just got my first tattoo kit. I ordered the same fake skins from Amazon and I want to be well prepared!

    • @DanielYuck
      @DanielYuck  3 года назад +6

      I made a video on how to make a stencil with an iPad but I don’t think that would be beneficial here.
      The idea behind creating stencils is fairly straightforward and there is multiple ways one can make a stencil especially in today’s age. You can use for example spirit stencil paper and just free hand a design onto the stencil paper with any pen or pencil , or you can trace over a printed design right on top of the stencil paper itself. If you’re just beginning that’s how I would approach it.
      Fake skins are a MUST HAVE when we are just starting. This is the best way to learn and develop. I don’t encourage anyone to practice on human skin. Furthermore,
      Let me ask what tattoo kit did you pick up ?

    • @jaymgtowgaming3907
      @jaymgtowgaming3907 3 года назад +1

      @@DanielYuck thank you! Yes I was going to draw it since I don’t have a thermal printer. I got the Atom dragon hawk pen. It was recommended to me. It’s very sleek and easy to hold. It was about $115. I’m going to start using it this week. It came with a lot of stuff. I was told to just use the ink that it came with on the fake skin only because it’s cheap

    • @DanielYuck
      @DanielYuck  3 года назад +1

      @@jaymgtowgaming3907 I wouldn’t use the ink that comes in tattoo kits unless it’s from a reputable company.
      That seems like a good buy! Keep me updated and let me know how you like it upon tattooing. For the stencils I would just draw them in as well. When I started I drew my stencils in manually but that beat up my hand and used a lot of energy so I went digital. But that’s subjective and to each their own.

    okay so this technique worked a little too well lmao, how do i get it off?

    • @DanielYuck
      @DanielYuck  2 года назад +1

      HAHA That is both good and bad.
      I would recommend if after the tattoo is done and we still have purple stencil to get some bleach water, I am uncertain of exact ratios from bleach to water but the idea is we allow the skin to soak in bleach water for a few hours which would lift the stencil and remove it.
      I have not tried this myself as I typically match the needle size to the design at hand. I have heard several people mention this approach and I have heard a lot of them mention the success they've had by using bleach water to remove the stencil.
      If you try this may you please let me know if this works and what ratios you used on your end.

    Spent all day following this and I went through 13 stencils on reel skin before giving up. I just can’t get them to stick at all and it’s honestly so devastating. I’ve tried speed stick and stencil stuff and it’s not working. The stencil is the most stressful part of the whole process for me. I looked up so many tutorials but unfortunately doesn’t work for me. I practiced applying stencils on human skin (not tattooing) and it was so much easier! Why must silicone be complicated lol
    For me, the issue is when I lay it down and put pressure, it won’t fully transfer. I make sure to coat the product and let it get tacky but maybe I let it get too dry? But then when I don’t wait long enough, it bleeds. Honestly most difficult part.

    • @letmusiclivee

      I can fully relate to you and understand what you are going through with this.
      I will do my best to assist you in the best direction. I also apologize for the delayed response.
      There are a couple of variables I consider upon applying tattoo stencils on silicone fake skin. I consider the felt. Is the fake skin surface smooth? Is the fake skin textured? This would help me determine if I am going to need more or less speed stick for the fake skin.
      If I apply too much speed stick I will get blurred lines, If I under apply the speed stick I will get light to no lines at all. So we have to find a good blend and find that sweet spot. I always just do my best to apply the stencil and press down evenly as best as I can upon applying.

    • @DanielYuck
      @DanielYuck  2 года назад +2

      Hey thank you for your support and feedback! I appreciate you.
      I know EXACTLY what this could be. When I place the stencil down and IF I leave the stencil with the excess amount of speed stick it has this causes the lines to blur, bold and potentially bleed into one another or in general.
      So what I do is I get a napkin and place it over the stencil and press firmly to remove the excess speed stick and remove the dark outline which will give us a faint outline that will not bold out in this manor. If I am correct this should resolve your issue. Please let me know if this helps.

  • @Sfffen

    Rub some talc powder on the skin before applying the stencilstuff, it kinda absorbs the excess liquid (like real skin would). I'm having a lot less stencil bleed since doing that trick :) Also: drying it for a couple of minutes with a blowdryer keeps it on really well!

    • @DanielYuck
      @DanielYuck  3 года назад +9

      Thank you for your comment.
      From what I see Talc powder aka Talcum powder is made from talc, a mineral made up mainly of the elements magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. Some Talc powders contains asbestos, a substance known to cause cancers in and around the lungs when inhaled.
      Should this be accurate to me I would NOT recommend this approach, I don't think for me personally I would do this on my practice skins either simply because the underlying issues that can occur with powder and build up in the needle let alone those specific ingredients on the skin or around my work station.
      I use speed stick deodorant when applying tattoo stencils to silicone based practice skins. When applying stencils to human skin I use StencilStuff.
      It is all in the amounts applied to the tattoo area that will determine the bleed and or how clean the tattoo stencils show up. I will be making a video on how to apply stencils to human skin here soon.
      My approach upon tattooing is as to keep me from having to touch outside sources such as a blow dryer upon tattooing to minimize any possible cross contamination. For me setting the stencil for 12-24 hours in advance versus using a blow dryer feels right, but to each their own.

      If I am correct the stencil over sat and now the purple won't budge. For this we can approach it a couple of different ways. We can use a needle to be bolder over the existing stencil which may not be a desirable method. The 2nd would be to drop the skin into some bleach water for a few hours so the purple stencil can lift and wipe off.

      if it’s just silicone and you don’t want to bother actually tattooing it (or don’t have the means to) i would just use permanent marker over the stencil and be careful that it dries properly

    • @DanielYuck
      @DanielYuck  2 года назад

      Hmmm That is definitely an interesting question!
      From my experience when I leave the stencil on the fake skin for over 24 hours the stencil will not budge and it will stay and bind onto the fake skin.

      I don’t recommend using gasoline to apply the stencil. We need the stencil to stick to the fake skin, vasoline helps us remove the stencil while moistening the tattooed area.
      Furthermore I recommend for the silicone felt fake skins simple deodorant. Speed stick was cheap and works great. I’ve seen old school tattooist use speed stick to run their actual tattoo sessions but for me personally I use speed stick only for practice skins. Allow it to sit for some time prior to tattooing because it will wipe right off if we don’t allow it to sit & set.

    • @DanielYuck
      @DanielYuck  2 года назад

      That is a great question!
      I would not recommend vaseline because it will cause blurring and possibly remove the stencil all in general. I would recommend using the transparent version of speed stick which is typically a green/blueish color.

But I started doing a few stencils at night before I go to bed and let them sit over night and dry by my window so when I get up they're ready to go but I usually try to wait a little bit cause if I start first thing when I get them I don't want to stop and I'll spend all day tattooing and not getting anything else done.
