The Hindenburg disaster in cartoons!

- Today marks the 80th anniversary of the tragic Hindenburg disaster, where a German zeppelin (similar to a blimp) filled with flammable hydrogen gas exploded and crashed while trying to land in New Jersey, killing 36 people. Despite the tragic nature, it's been parodied and mentioned in numerous cartoons!
In order, the clips come from "Pokemon," "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," "The Looney Tunes Show," "DuckTales," "Rocko's Modern Life," "CatDog," "I.M. Weasel" and "Amazing World of Gumball." All clips are copyrighted by their respective owners; FAIR USE!
Hindenburg: crashes and burns, killing dozens of people.
Kids cartoons: It's free real estate.
Actually it only killed 36 people most were crew members
@@psychicrenegade And it was an accident.
Meanwhile today, there are lots of 9/11 memes
"IT ONLY TOOK A BAG OF PRETZELS TO BLOW UP THE HINDENBURG"
I love this quote and I don't know why
Oh the Humanity!
hindenburg: Oh the humanity
spongebob: OH THE ARTIFICIAL HUMANITY
Family Guy: OH MY GOD!
In 50 years, kids shows will have 9/11 jokes.
9/11 was FAR worse than the Hindenburg disaster. 9/11 was an intentional terrorist attack that killed thousands. The Hindenburg disaster was an accident, and only 36 people died (there were 97 aboard the airship when it exploded and crashed, and most of the deaths were crew members.)
They already do
@@ZakWolf oh yeah and the twin towers collapsed in 9/11
"I wasn't aiming for the truck"
"oh yeah i made the wrong movement then it happened, sad that i got fired"
2:13 I forgot how well the simpsons used to be animated. they actually had more than 2 in-betweens for each character motion.
I like the G-rated cartoons the best.
All
Oh, the animated irony.

2:02 i didn't know they had these, der pretty cool! Hindenburg explodes* Oh right..... I think he was reffering to the fact that zeplinns are cool but then he remembered they had been fueled with hydrogen when it exploded lol
Yep, pretty much!
@@ZakWolf also what episode is this?
@@RecoveringMoth "The Void."
@@ZakWolf thank you
LOL. I remember when I went to camp a few years ago, we were roasting hot dogs and one (I think it was mine) fell in the fire. It started to smoke and I said "That hot dog looks like the Hindenburg!" Everyone lost it, even the counselors!
Thanks for the heart.
Baba Looey on this episode of shit that never happened
We have a comedian over here...

Oh, the mammality!
1:50: The humanity! THE ANGER!!
You know, Spongebob did this gag in "Band Geeks"!
Yup
I needed to see Barney crash the Duff blimp to the Team Rocket fight music.
While a bunch of these are clear references to it, I dont think every time a zeppelin has a crash landing automatically makes it a hindenburg parody. Like the Pokemon and DuckTales ones don't seem referencing Hindenburg in particular
In the DuckTales one, the ship is actually called "HindenTanic!"
@@ZakWolfBut what about the Pokémon one?
@@TheLuisSloth meowth refers to the hindenbrug blowing up.
There was also a scene in She-Ra: Princess of Power, in which a Horde vehicle resembling the Hindenburg caught fire and crashed.
What episode was it in again? Been a while since I last watched the series.😅
Oh the humanity!
Oh the humidity!
oh the hilarity!
"I don't know why they got rid of these, there pretty cool." EXPLODES. "Right!" "Ahhhhhh!!!!!"
That was the first time I've seen you use Pokémon in a YTP. Great job!
Weird thing though is that some of the *older* instances of a blimp crashing - even if it's not exactly the Hindenburg - would most likely be edited out moreso as a result of avoiding controversy of 9-11
I see you used this dramatic music from Pokemon to set this mood
Oh, the humidity!
I actually saw the footage for the real crash in "Destroyed in Seconds."
The Hinderburg:
- is named after a WW1 veteran & president of the Weimar Republic
- Met a tragic end
- Was almost *not* completed
- Was completed with funding from the Nazis
- Has the swastika on its fins (edit)
Cartoons: 👀 "Hmm, yes, we should reference this..."
Though at least the Hindenburg disaster was just an accident, and of the 97 people aboard the zeppelin, only 35 of them died, with most of them being crew members (a navy linesman helping land the ship was also killed).
The Rocko one is my favorite lol.
Phinal Flash #FireCleteBlakeman i just saw that on tv lol
Note they called that one the Hillenburger… three guesses who they’re referring to.

now we need the Titanic disaster in cartoons
Yes!
That would be an even LONGER montage than this!
1:19 its accually sad that this is the only existence of the hidentanic on youtube ;(
0:39 "to the Hindenpeter!" My favorite scene from Family Guy!
Note: the Hindenburg didn’t hit the mooring mast, it was just the angle of that one photo of it
Exactly!
Read about it, yes it did
No it didn’t
There are photos that prove it
@@klttrll Yep, I've seen them. And in addition to that one photo you mentioned, there's also the newsreel footage of the disaster where it quickly pans up to the Hindenburg exploding, in that same angle with the mooring mast in front of the zeppelin's stern.
figures the Simpsons did it the most
2017: amazing world of gumball jeez why did that catch fire oh well?
2020: OMG I NEVER KNOW EST THAT THE HINDENBURG DISASTER IN THIS SHOW OMG !!!!!?
**Led Zeppelin intensifies**
I'm gonna say, the Ducktails crash with launchpad I am gonna say that is more a nod to the Italia crash where the control car was ripped off the italia and the crew survived in the artic, more then a hindenburg nod.
That seems pretty likely, even if the dirigible was named the Hindentanic.
Hmm, 1:09 seems more R101 than Hindenburg
Hmm,the hindenburg didn't explode In ducktails though.
No wonder Team Rocket switched to the hot air balloon.
0:46 “OH MY GOD!!!” -Peter Griffin
That was Joe Swanson
When you meet a survivor of the Hindenburg
Such Tragedies will eventually become Comedies in the future.
Well, at least the Hindenburg disaster was an accident.
2:07 So Gumball did it first than those Battlefield 1 soldiers?
BLACKBURN! RUUUUNN!!!!!
Totally rad!
You forgot the part on Seinfeld when Newman’s truck catches fire.
Oh, the Zoomanity! (The Simpsons: 500 Keys)
I think the idea of these cartoons and this humor in general is to exploit the hazardous nature of the airship design. That they were simply giant railway carts fitted with diesel engines floating hundreds of feet above the ground with giant hydrogen filled balloons. It's to ridicule and slander the very idea of these airships that promoted luxury and comfort above safety.
Also in Eek the cat there is that Melvis the cat episoade with a similar gag.
*OH THE HUMANITY*

May 6, 1937.
They turned tragedy into a comedy😜
At 1:03 if you Pause it you can see that the Hindenburg’s Symbol is a Plus sign.
In that clip it's not actually the Hindenburg. The actual zeppelin had Nazi swastikas on its' tail fins, but despite that episode featuring Granny fighting Nazis, real swastikas are still taboo to show on TV.
Oh, the humanity!
We're just gonna forget the scene from Clarence?
You forgot one from Batman TAS.
Kent brockmann one is my favorite.
Funny enough, I have a bit of a Mandela effect on that bit; I mis-remembered Kent Brockman just chuckling and jokingly saying "Oh, the humanity!" in response to the Duff blimp crashing and exploding. But to be fair, that feels exactly like something Kent would do!
The disrespect is real
For real, a lot of these are incredibly distasteful

Pokemon Season 1 references The Poseidon Adventure, Pokemon Season 2 references the Hindenburg, are their any other disasters real or fictional this children's show references for god knows what reasons?
In 50 years, kids shows will be spoofing the Titanic disaster!
Oh, but they've already been spoofing the Titanic for a long time now!
Fun fact: The Hindenburg was originally supposed to be in Ghostbusters 2 instead of the Titanic.
2:21 music name
This is messed up.
0:33 everyone thought the famous picture of it burning was by a electric thing but it wasnt, the ghing people thought that killed the hidenburg wasnt a power line, that was the docking thing so if the ship lands it will be tethered to that and yes that thing is closer to the camera and not close to the airship
Right. That thing is called a mooring mast. The newsreel footage was also shot at that same angle.
1:46 The Death of Stephen Hillenburger (2018 Miscolorized and Cartonized)
Hillenburg
Yep, that was an intentional reference to Stephen Hillenburg, as he was a creative director on "Rocko's Modern Life."
The world's most biggest campfire oh and I got to bring marshmallows
1:19 the most accurate one
Before the ducktales one im pretty sure that airship cras was based off the irl crash of r101
The one from Pokémon? Yeah, that's pretty likely. I only included it because the blimp got rebuilt after that, only for it to explode on its maiden voyage (the clip after the DuckTales one).
my grandfather saw this
I don't know if this sounds funny but why the heck is the Hindenburg in Pokemon?
Not the actual Hindenburg, but references to the disaster, particularly mentioning the blimp (that has a metal framework in it like a zeppelin) using inflammable gas that could ignite if Pikachu uses an electric attack.
R.I.P the people in the Hindenburg
I like the 1:39 fat joke, which cartoon does it come from?
"Rocko's Modern Life," the episode "Feisty Geist".
@@ZakWolf thanks
Well for the simpsons it is understandable why they would joke about that stuff, after all, matt groening was a freemason.
I want to say the amazing world g I mball is a Heidenberg refrence but it could be the R101 air ship
That is a real Hindenburg disaster
2:08 the Hindenburg never crashed into the mooring mass
1:01 they turned the swastika into a cross
Right. But they used the electrical tower to help make the fire worse, to reference that it was a static electricity spark that ignited the flammable hydrogen gas the zeppelin contained.
@@ZakWolf even though The Ventilation system and electricity is what caused the Hindenburg explode, it never hit an electric tower, and the airships nose was still intact when it hit the ground, well it's cartoon lpgic, things that don't happen will happen

The Hindenburg disaster was tragic, and when you pictures of the beautiful amenities she had, it makes me more upset how people can make fun of it. They might as well make fun of the Titanic or the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Well, the death toll was much lower with the Hindenburg disaster. Out of the 97 people aboard the zeppelin, only 35 of them died, most of them being crew members (one of the navy linesmen on the ground also died in the crash, bringing the death count to 36.)
Plus, it's not my fault a lot of those cartoons would make fun of the Hindenburg disaster. The Hindenburg truly did sound like a cool zeppelin, had it not been filled with the flammable hydrogen gas.
...or 9/11.
Yes, making fun of 9/11 would be WAY worse, and even more disrespectful. The Hindenburg is easier, as that happened over 80 years ago, and it was an accident, and there were far less fatalities.
You want a mocking of the Titanic?
Watch any of the animated movies.
You want a mocking of Pearl Harbour?
I don’t think there’s any doing that.
You know they absolutely would make fun of 9/11 if they could, I think the issue is just the timing would be too soon. And I think I’ve seen kids cartoons that have made jokes about the titanic before
2:03 it’s the coolest reference
I steal da hindenpeter
What about Titanic disaster in cartoons?
Where's Robot Chicken?

What's the background music at the start? I know it's from the _Pokémon_ anime.
Yep, it is. On the soundtrack, it's called "Real Pokémon vs. Copy Pokémon".
@@ZakWolf Thanks. Listened and it was exactly the track I was looking for!
