New Coke taste test, decades after it was discontinued!

  • This is a quick little video where I taste test New Coke - something I never would have thought I could say in the year 2019. New Coke was Coca Cola's answer to the Pepsi Challenge in 1985, only instead of just introducing a new flavor, they completely replaced their iconic soft drink with this new formula. The backlash was swift and severe and Coke's original formula was brought back less than a year later as Coca Cola Classic, which is still on the market as just Coca Cola.
Now in a tie-in with nostalgia factory Stranger Things, Coke has brought back New Coke for a limited time and by mail-order only. I thought that was weird/interesting/funny, so I bought a box of it. Watch me taste test it here!

Correction: New Coke was introduced on April 23, 1985. The announcement of Coca-Cola Classic's return came on either July 10 or July 11, 1985. New Coke would be renamed to Coke II in 1992, and it would continue to be sold in select areas until it finally left the shelves forever in 2002.

1985 ~ New Coke debuts, it's formula being based on the 1982 Diet Coke formula.

My recollections are the same. New coke just had no subtlety to its flavor. It achieved its goal of giving you a shot of sweetness and carbonation . Here in California the mexican grocery stores came to the rescue. They had already been “unofficially” importing mexican coke because their customers preffered it because it still had real sugar. They eventually started sticking english content labels on the bottles to comply with regulations. To this day you can still buy mexican bottled coke in those stores.

The reality is, New Coke tasted better than regular coke to most people in a blind taste test. The problem was that the non-blind taste test people who drank coke wanted regular coke not new coke. People who drank pepsi would probably still drink Pepsi. So it would only alienate your dedicated fanbase. We do know that while "new coke" was a failure of a product when the original coke came back the attention they drew from their alleged fiasco had the exact opposite effect making it a massive success for coca-cola. People even think they sabotaged their product for the media attention on purpose but that was almost certainly not the case....

Seems to be doing better this time compared to in 1985 though. People made it seem as though it tasted drastically different. It tastes a lot better than people said and we are glad they brought it back. Here is my thought on the 3 (Pepsi, Coke and New Coke)...New Coke tastes basically the same as old Coke/regular Coke, just slightly sweeter but not by much, and it does not have that bitter, chalky aftertaste on your tongue that old Coke has. It has a cleaner finish. As far as Pepsi it is sweeter than all 3. But honestly...if you gave someone New Coke without telling them it was New Coke they would not notice the difference and think they were drinking old Coke instead. Having the word "NEW" on the packaging is really the only thing making us aware there is a difference, and it is a very subtle difference. So it heightens our awareness to it being a different taste before we even drink it. Not sure what the big deal was in 1985, perhaps the backlash was all a marketing scam and planned all along? But it is not that much different and most people would not notice the difference.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 Год назад

@@musclesmouse yep, diet coke was never meant to taste like a sugar free version of Coca-Cola (that's what coke zero is, these days, the same coca cola formula but sweetened with sweeteners instead of sugar). Instead, diet coke was meant to taste very different to coca cola so it's not just a diet version of coke but an alternate product that wouldn't necessarily compete with coca cola.
Diet coke proved so popular, that yeah New Coke was essentially just the diet coke formula, but sweetened with sugar instead of sweeteners.
That's why the logo/can design of new coke looks so similar to diet coke logo/can design.
Though if they had changed coca cola gradually to new coke without ever saying anything about it, people would probably never have noticed. Nobody really knows what coke tastes like. It just tastes familiar, tastes like what they remember, and that's all that matters.

So from 1985-2002 both versions were still sold in the USA. It was renamed Coke II in 1992. The only difference was Caffeine Free New Coke was the only variant until 1990 when it was replaced by Caffeine Free Coca-Cola classic. New Coke on the other hand Had 4 logo changes (the one with the "New!" banner, which lasted 6-12 months, the same logo with the removal of the "new" banner in 1986-1988, an italic styled logo with blue replacing the silver in the dynamic ribbon in 1988-1992, and a name change to Coke II in 1992). Once the name change happened it was sold in select cities and was never advertised oddly. As far as taste.... Most people still mix up New Coke and old Coke in blind taste tests though. I've long been curious as to what New Coke tasted like. We didn't get it in the UK, for obvious reasons it never launched here. But from around the mid to late 80's we did adopt some of the New Coke branding, with cans featuring the classic Coca Cola logo on one side and the Coke name on the other. If New Coke is sweeter than Pepsi, then I'm definitely not onboard with the formula. I've always disliked Pepsi because I find it way too sweet. I used to work at Pepsico, and the canteen vending machine was stocked exclusively with Pepsico drinks. I always wanted a Coke Zero, but had to settle for Diet Pepsi as it's the least sweet cola of Pepsi's offerings. Pepsi Max in the UK is even sweeter than regular Pepsi, I find it horrible. Coca Cola has that perfect balance of sweet and bitter. To go sweeter than Pepsi with New Coke would be an absolute deal breaker for me.

It's been a while since I made this video now, but yes as I recall New Coke is definitely sweeter than regular Pepsi. I actually normally drink either Diet Pepsi or Pepsi Zero Sugar today (I hate that both Coke and Pepsi now have two different zero sugar drinks), but when I'm super thirsty, nothing beats a regular, cane sugar Coke (we can get that here as "Mexican" Coke, which is an actual thing that you can get nationwide at this point). The bitterness is definitely part of that taste, though. New Coke didn't have that at all.

The problem with those taste tests is that the participants only had a sip. Something different happens to your sense of taste if you drink a whole glass of something, compared to just a sip. And that's what the field testing of New Coke missed. If they sold it in those little coffee creamer sized containers, I guess it could have flown.

I think would Coke should've said after the New Coke outrage was that they made a Pepsi-like tasting so they could prove Classic Coke tasted better. I myself believe all cola is disgusting but if I had to drink one or die I'd probably die lol. Jk Coke because Pepsi has that pepper like after taste. Great video!

Retro Pepsi or Mountain Dew. You should do a sugar vs hfcs test.
FYI, new coke is Diet Coke using hfcs or sugar instead of diet sweetener.

I don't know if it's a world "thing", but in Brazil Pepsi add artificial sweetener in regular Pepsi and the Pepsi now is really HORRIBLE. Pepsi guys even don't notice that, which proves they have bad taste.

It's too bad they couldn't get the SHAPE of the can correct. As an 1980's child... and as someone with working eye balls... The re-introduced New Coke clearly isn't in the same can design as the original New Coke was. The shape of the can was the easiest part of this marketing thing. Why couldn't they do that!!!! Lazy bastards.

I am old enough to remember when Coke did this, and my family was scrambling to get original coke still on the shelves after New Coke came out. New Coke was just absolutely terrible, all of my friends and family hated it. I remember boxes of the stuff stacked in the isles of our grocery stores because no one wanted to buy it.

Coke over Pepsi any day. Mexican Coke is the original flavor with cane Sugar and is better then Coke with HF. But I prefer Coke over Pepsi. But I am a baby boomer and the younger generation prefer Pepsi more

New Coke wasn't horrible, but it was completely unnecessary. Coke thought it would be a good idea to stop making Coke and emulate Pepsi. It was a really dumb idea. Though Coke Classic wasn't the original formula. It was the new new coke.

If you can't tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi your taster is broken. I can't stand Pepsi. I go for the Coke bottled in Mexico with real sugar over that corn syrup shit they use now. Bottles actually are much better than cans, you get a metallic taste with cans and don't get me started on the plastic bottle crap...its glass bottles or nothing.

I’ve never understood how people can like Pepsi better than Coke, or how they can’t tell the difference. Pepsi has always tasted like medicine to me. When I go to a restaurant and order a Coke and they ask if Pepsi is okay, I’m like, “If you order a hamburger and I ask you if a wax disc between two sponges is okay, would you be happy?” When I find out a restaurant I like has switched from Coke to Pepsi produccts, I don’t go back. (Unless they have diet Dr. Pepper, which is rare.)
