No, we riot if Charles doesn't give his opinion on Adam Neelys' video Music Theory and White Supremacy, a statement made on his video that is misleading and shortsighted and political. No part one. @@isheetfromaswhole3657 I watched that video expecting to think that it was woke and pandering and I was persuaded. Have you watched it through and considered the actual points he makes in defense of his position?
Jeff Goldblum is basically if a human was a texture, if you could taste a color, as if jazz was physically manifested into a person. No one is enjoying life like Jeff Goldblum is enjoying life. What an awesome guy. Love him so much.
Jeff Goldblum is enjoying being Jeff Goldblum.
He’s got good time, a very nice touch, uses hip voicings and an affinity for Monk. He doesn’t try to “play snakes” like a kid, he is really playing what he wants to at the moment, that’s jazz!
His mannerisms fit jazz so well, he's full of the unexpected.
Yeah just like Ian Malcom's chaos unexpected but good, sooo good
5:44 When the sax comes in, he reacts as if it's some enchanting butterfly flitting over his head. His physical emoting of the music is so perfect and hilarious to me.

British actor Hugh Laurie, who plays the title role in the House series, is a really skilled jazz musician too. He has played many roles where he’s used these skills. Worth listening to, if you’ve not done so already.
I love all the songs he did in A Bit of Fry & Laurie.
“I love improvising and that feeling of communication and interplay. It’s one of the cornerstones of my acting technique. I see my music in the same way.” - Jeff Goldblum
As a guitar player, I can absolutely say that the autopilot thing is so real and my buddies and I call it being stuck in the box. (Same patterns, same licks, etc.)
I hear ya. One learns a big big bunch of things and then just yolo and hope that you Come up with something good
I am an amateur guitarist myself but in recent years I prefer to jam out on the piano despite never having had any piano lessons and not being any good at it. But that is the whole point. I can't rely on muscle memory.
We call it the plateau, whole lot of progress climbing followed by no progress at all doing the same thing over and over. Helps to unlearn a little bit by avoiding certain chords/ notes/ riffs and forcing yourself to play by ear
I'd really love to hear what you think of Hugh Laurie's playing.
honestly same
🤔
I want to know what I think of his playing. Shit, now I'm going to be up all night doing this. Heh
I like him a lot, hes really talented. My dad had one of his cds in his car, battle of jericho and st james infirmary are my favorite
Yes, I was going to comment the same. Would like to hear a take on his playing as well.
Ye please
You know he’s good when his chord voicings are perfect, teetering on the edge of just slapping random keys.
Lmao best jazz musicians just look like that. I'm trying to learn technical shit while still playing from my head.
"There are no wrong notes, you just lack confidence" - Jacob Collier
And Jeff totally does that. He plays what he feels, going along with what just happens to happen.
It can be hard to explain when someone isn't necessarily "good" at an instrument in the expected way, but is still talented and has an ear for what sounds good. You did a great job of that here, especially at 11:45 and on. Sometimes there are people who aren't actually, technically skilled at something, but the way they found ability to do it is pleasing to the ear. It's not for everyone, and it won't be featured in any greatest hits, but it has merit. And you can tell they put their all into it. That's what I appreciate about Jeff's performances - this dude just loves Jazz and he's found a way to express that at the piano in a way that's unique to him, that others enjoy beyond the novelty of seeing an actor play music. My entire musical family disagrees with me and I know why, but an example I go back to is Russell Crowe as Javert in Les Misérables. Crowe is not a good singer - no projection, muddied, quiet, tonally narrow. But he's my favorite Javert, because his voice fits the tortured character best, in my mind.
Anyway I'm rambling but tl;dr, sometimes being highly skilled at something sounds worse than someone who can only perform at a basic level.
This musician seconds about Russell Crowe as Javert!
I'm far from a jazz expert and not much of a musician, but it also seems (at least from the clips presented here) like he's very good at using playing dynamics and pushing and dragging time in a way that works really well with both the piece being performed and the rest of the band he's playing it with. It's subtler than flashy technical playing, but it's an important skill in itself and one that takes a lot of effort to learn to do well!
Music is an art, not a sport.
It is supposed to convey emotion, something sublime - not skill or perfection.
Jeff Goldblum seems like a guy who just happens to be Jeff Goldblum.
I’m quoting this😂
You know, this makes more sense that it should
In a way, don't we all
Just happen to be

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 WHY DOES THIS ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE
I met Jeff Goldblum back in 2003 at an acting masterclass program. He told us all that he had just started taking jazz piano lessons, and then proceeded to play "Alley Cat" for everyone. I don't know what I was expecting, but it was just about the most Jeff Goldblum thing I had ever seen, and I didn't know that I needed it in my life.
The movie “Earth Girls Are Easy” features Jeff paying a little sixties jazz-pop piano. Very talented as is Steve Martin who plays banjo on an expert level.
True. Steve Martin is excellent too.
As somebody who's just learning guitar in his 40s, this is inspiring. I'll never have that auto-pilot thing that's so very impressive, but this gives me another model to aspire to. Thank you!
you can tell Jeff isn't just running arpeggios, he is playing what he hears. There's a famous quote from jimmy hendrix where he says some times he just sits and listens to the music in his head. Monk is famous for putting in blood and sweat so that when he improvises it looks flawless.
Hah, the only time Jeff played arpeggios he kinda stumbled over them. Clearly not a chops-y musician, but a legit musician nonetheless for the reasons Charles elucidates here. That's fine - uniqueness is more important than speed. Jimi Hendrix wasn't Al Dimeola, and that spoke well for Jimi. He was one of the best musicians to play what he heard. "Little Wing" is unlike anything else that has ever been written. It's a guitar composition, brimming with emotion.
@@aquamarine99911 please do not speak of Jimi Hendrix and Jeff the cheesey fake Goldblum in the same breath.
That is disrespectful of genius and very ignorant of you. Goldblum leans on his pro band and plays nothing of interest.
@@MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out Wow, it was the initial comment who brought up Hendrix (and Monk, another legit genius). I just wanted to clarify his point about the arpeggios, and put in my own two cents about Jimi. And I (unlike the first commenter) spelled his name correctly, which is the first sign of respect.
There are a lot of divisions in society today. I'm not sure why you're getting your back up and tossing around insults over something like this. If everybody had your online approach, things would be even worse.

I know this is two years old but I have to say this is the best vid I've seen about Jeff's playing because you used Canteloupe Island as the example. I had not see that one before. He just nailed it with his chord voicings and perfect timing, he's really grooving. I find myself listening to his version over and over. I've seen Herbie and other monsters just smoke this tune and of course Jeff isn't trying to compete with that but what he's doing here is really good. And, he knows how to work the crowd as well as anybody.
Something you may be able to find, there is an old episode of Law and Order where his detective character is chasing down a murderer who is a wannabe keyboard rockstar who killed a rival. Jeff and his partner goes to the club he's performing at and when the kid takes a break walks up on stage, the kid says "what are you doing?" Jeff ignores him and proceeds to play a great blues riff on the his digital stage setup with that big flashy ending we all like to do on Georgia and he really nailed it. He gets the same amount of applause the kid got and Jeff jumps off the stage, goes over to him and says "And I'm just a cop" just to get into his head a little. Beautiful moment. Jeff's got more chops than he's showing here.
Randomly browsing/procrastinating and you've made a fan of me with this video! I love this lighthearted reaction to Jeff Goldblum the jazz pianist and how you find a way to segue into what makes music so meaningful and infectious! Your vulnerability is not taken for granted. Thank you!
I went to the club he plays at in LA. He’s awesome. His piano playing is great and he made the show funny, came round to everyone’s tables and took pictures with everyone. He ended the set with a jazz rendition of Jurassic Park
That moment when you realize someone actually is behind the camera and Charles isn’t just talking to himself😂😂
Playing music from an “in the moment/feelings” than on “autopilot” is what it should be about, otherwise it gets boring and robotic.
