    • @kimmyjootron
      @kimmyjootron 4 года назад +77

      Sydney Dumoit Actually anyone can do what Charles does believe it or not, it just takes a shit ton of practice not perfect pitch. Basically in relative pitch, instead of hearing the notes as its specific note, people with relative pitch can hear notes based on its function of the key its in. So for example even though he cant hear that a certain note is a C he can tell that its the 4th degree in the scale because of intervals. So with a really good relative pitch it can be pretty much as good as perfect pitch! Ive been playing piano for a couple years and have the ability to play things I hear as well (not as quick as charles of course but Im definitely getting there)

This song has always been my favorite on the album because of the incredible level of detail put into into it. Thank you for making a video that showcases this. Charles! Dude, your listening skills are amazing. Have you used any specific ear training exercises or routines? Or would you say your ability to quickly discern what you're hearing is a result of doing music at a high level for many years? For melodic lines, do you hear intervals or do you know the pitches after establishing the key? I'm working on building my skills and I'm curious how it works for you. Love your content!

      Hey! I'm 9 months late with a comment, but I think a LOT of Charles' listening skills are coming from experience.
      When he finds the first note or chord, he can pretty reliability find the next note/chord he hears, by referencing what he hears against what he played before and which note/chord is most likely to follow it.
      (He explains this sorta in the Charlie Puth 'perfect pitch' video.)

    Listens through the solo part probably less than 50 times and and totally nails it.
    I've really gotten into Charlie's music the last couple years after realizing how much of a musical enigma he is in modern pop music. "Boy" is one of my favorite songs of his. Just such a cool song musically

    So great to hear Charles pulling apart my favorite Charlie Puth song (That's putting it above so many that blow me away), BOY! When it first came out, I kept saying, "why isn't this a single……why isn't the world being exposed to the FULL CHARLIE PUTH?". Obvious! A bit too sophisticated for his pop audience. Still, that may be underestimating others who listen to this genre hungering for something as amazing as this! But most of all it's great to hear someone as talented as Cornell singing the praises of my favorite musician!

    I’m kinda conflicted about Charlie. I think his musicianship is fantastic (obviously) and that it shows in the production and instrumentation of his songs, but I just feel that his lyrics are.....well, kinda basic. He’s talked before about how his lyric-writing is “literal” and “straightforward”....I just think the juxtaposition does himself a disservice and that some more lyrical creativity would take his music up a level!

      My guess is that he's trying to cater to a big audience. Most people like songs with lyrics. It doesn't really matter if they're basic or not.

      he did say that everything he writes about is stuff that he experienced before tho, so I think that, even if it is kinda basic or mainstream, at least he's talking from his heart.

      I was actually just about to write something similar. I feel his music is really mature, his singing really good but his lyrics make him seem very young, kinda Britney-ish. But whatever works I guess.

      Pop music must be simple in order to resonate with as many broad audiences as possible. It’s part of why senorita became super popular despite not really meaning anything.

    • @jinsory5582
      @jinsory5582 4 года назад +22

      I think a large part of that really is intentional, Charlie probably isn't as much a lyrical genius as he is a producer and musician. Therefore I feel he gives more liberty to the music itself. I know he is a competent lyricist, but I feel that it's not as much an expression of his creative output as much as the rest of the music. Of course industry pressure is always there, hit songs don't get popular for their complexity, they do because of how much people have heard it, how 'fresh' it is to the eyes of the media, and how much marketing is put into it. The more complex the lyrics are the more people 'seem' to be alienated by it or dismiss it since at the end of it all, nearly all hit songs are songs you play at the club, in the car, or alone in your room because you're completely tuned out of the lyrics regardless.
      Of course this is not to say that lyrics with a larger or more-complex story behind them don't get awards or become hits, they do, but the complexity in the lyrics is usually a surprisingly-small factor of its success, but rather something people and the media throw around to praise this song whether or not its lyrics are truly meaningful.

    This song and analysis brings me back to that time I went to his concert when he was touring in Canada and he totally had that jazz solo put there so he could just riff off whatever he felt like. I'm pretty sure he didn't riff what he wrote in the song, but it sounded great and I was so impressed how quickly a stadium went from hyped pop concert into a classy jazz concert because of his jazzy solo. He just went off on his keyboard and it was amazing.
