I quit playing 40k years ago when I couldn't keep up with all the sourcebook changes...but this looks simple (and fun). What a great excuse to dig out all my old unpainted models and see what kind of game of Grimdark I can put on. Thanks!
I got into 40k right before 9th edition dropped and have only played a few games with some friends, topping out at 2000pts. Watching you play a game of this size in less than an hour blows my mind. Great job showing off a great system.
What an exciting match! At first it seemed like the Robot Legions were going out quickly and it would be a simple match, but they had the point lead early on so close to the end I wasn't sure if the TAO would scramble enough points. Very exciting end to the game. Also the way that last unit of Robots was hugging the craggy cliff-side really goes to show the power of good terrain and definitely encourages making your own, 'cause even without being on the terrain (for cover, per the house rule) they still made masterful use of the physical shape of it to reduce who could target them. Awesome table layout as always.
I will definitely say that this system they use is less complex than main 40k or some of the other major wargames. If you are dedicated to learn, I'd say look for a local gaming group or hobby store that supports wargaming, and start small with either low-point games or skirmish games like Warcry or Kill Team.
I would also agree with starting with a skirmish wargame, but since you are interested in Grimdark Future, I would suggest you try starting with Grimdark Future Firefight, which is the skirmish version, and requires fewer models to start with.
@@WylochsArmory I lost. But that's ok. I kept forgetting about my Sage's psichic ability, forgot to include good shot each time, forgot about elemental powers. But in the end it all came down to me not being able to kill off single remaining Battle Brother who kept passing his morale tests and contesting objective marker... In the end it was 5:4 after 4 rounds though if it lasted longer some assault brothers creeping up on me would have decimated my Snipers. I had fun.
@@WylochsArmory with my squads I went very sniper-focused (to pick and choose valuable targets). I didn't bring to the table anything that packed a punch.
Seen a few of your older batreps (3 years old in 2023) and like them 😁 really like those objective markers with crystal numbering - very subtle 👍more and more persuaded by OPR
Great game! So many interesting interacting things going on. A fighting scramble up Spotter Mountain would have been the cherry on the icing on the cake.
I found out about Grimedark when I bought a 3d resin printer and found 1 page rules figures. I really like :) I am currency printing a 'Not Sisters of battle' army lol :)
Nice painting, great terrain, excellent game! My son and I are digging out our old Orks, T/ao, Marines and Chaotics, assembling and painting the many SOS (still on sprue) units and getting ready to play some GrimDark Future. One thing I've been searching for is a conversion chart for the changeover - what old unit is the new unit kinda thing. Anyone help us out?
Well, the good news is that since gdf is meant to be "play with what you have" there is no "official" correspondence of models to game unit. (since a person might not have gw figs at all) So long as everybody is clear on what's what it should work. Of course, gdf is also meant to roughly map onto current 40k so 40k figures DO have an intended gdf unit, but just because you don't have primaris marine figures doesn't mean that you can't run prime brothers. Again so long as everybody is clear on what's what.
It's an answer a year later but maybe it'll be helpful. One Page rules has a wiki that shows what units correspond to GW models or other 3d printed options
A great question. Answer: Spotting Lasers are not weapons. They are not treated as weapons. They are a Special Ability for the model. Note the phrasing in Spotting Laser: "This model may try to mark an enemy unit instead of firing one of its weapons."
@@WylochsArmory btw, your Tau look fantastic. I've built a squad for Kill Team and have been undecided on which faction to paint them as, but you really pulled this one off. I've seen others attempt the same with less success. Well done!
as an avid 40k player fed up with GW as of late, naturally the name Grimdark Future was dropped to me several times. First thing that baffles me is this is a 4000pt game and its like half the size of a normal 40k match lol. Yeah i know we can just up the points if we like our usual big battles but still kinda funny to me. Game looks good.
I think this system is missing the strength vs toughness step. Currently it make no sense bringing bigger models, since EVERYTHING wounds it even the smallest guys
The goal is to have far speedier games. Toughness also adds another layer that can make balancing tricky. The balance is in that your big models have higher saves, most all big models save on a 2+. So while you can get plinked by lighter firepower most big models have a good chunk of wounds and high defense that should let them shrug off a lot of small arms fire. The issue in this match up is TAO. Even with high armor it's hard to shrug off a bazillion shots a turn.
I got so disgusted with GW that I sold over 40,000 pts of Chaos armies and books but mistakenly kept a bunch of models (were stuffed away in a box). A fellow GW-disgusted hobbyist says "Grim Dark." I look it up. Love it. One thing's the same, however, from GW to GD: I hate both these armies. Great game, gents.
Unless its different in fantasy, I think you guys played the blast rule wrong: It the hits from a blast weapon are limited to one per model in the target unit.
How did you get 12 hits on a single model with your blast weapons? A Blast weapon deals up to it's Blast Level based on number of models in the defending unit. Since you shot the Shard, it's a single model unit. You hit two shots, but you only get two hits total. Not 12. Blasts are for mobs, Deadly is for tough models.

It feels like a better balanced game.
Grimdark Future has a very good spot for most your 40k units

Man... This is so good... I needed this style of wargaming to continue because GW makes it too complicated to be fun

They called the kroot jackals, and made them snipers! Excellent reference.

I love the highlights you did on the jackals skin, good job!
Great battle report! Thank you for sharing! After watching thisatch I started to wonder where to start 3rd army..
I've got stuff I need to do. Funny how I enjoy watching these battle reports so much.
Nice. I've learnt about Grimdark Future from your channel, and played my first game (playing 1000pts TAO Coalition) this weekend.

You would think that an exploding thing that size would destroy everything on the table.
Am I right in thinking you still win if your army gets wiped out with your custom rules?
Unsure. Just decide before the game with your opponent if thats the case or not,
