The two biggest contributors to shoulder pain I personally had were 1) impingement due to crossover beneath my body, and 2) attempting to pull hard too early in the catch phase, rather than completing the catch and accelerating through a proper pull.
I love scapula pushups! I've recently learned about them and love them. It feels so good on your back. I have a ton of stress between my shoulder blades and my spine and these are fantastic for therm. Also cat cow is good for learning how to find that little pocket to breathe for breaststroke to not lift your head too high.
This summer I noticed pain in my shoulder but I identified it as overreaching during the recovery of the freestyle stroke. So be sure not to do stuff your shoulder (plane of scapula) really can't do often or with too much load. With better rotation I fixed my problem.
nice video! I had an left shoulder injury recently and did only kicks for few days. I believe it was due to my bad technic, my right hand side technique is good but not my left hand side. Now im improving my left hand side techniques
Great video, super technical look at repetitive shoulder injuries is a good idea, as a D1 swimmer I can tell you I saw lots of people leave swimming one to two years into a career because of busted shoulders, it's pretty sad really.
I’m at my late 30s and just started learning swimming.. this video is so useful as I may have developed some shoulder pain and it is definitely my poor freestyle technique. Thanks for the info.
I really appreciate this video. I swim regularly and started back last week after a month off. I feel this ache in my shoulder at night and now I know what it is from. I will definitely work on strengthening my shoulder with the exercises.
Thank you so much! I stopped swimming during the pandemic and my swimmer's shoulder got completely better. Getting back into it now and I want to do it right!
I wasn't rotating during freestyle and backstroke. After learning to rotate, the shoulders healed. I also have naturally weak shoulders and prior injuries, so I've incorporated rotor cuff physical therapy exercises in to my weightlifting routines.

Question: Is the shoulder girdle disengaged/ dislocated during the early forearm (as in the beginning of some types of pull-up)? ... Are the lats and scapuar muscles engaged during the initial EVF? (Obviously they engage after the EVF but what about at the time of positioning of the 90 Degree after the catch? As I watch slowmo videos it does seem that there might be a dislocation of sorts with the activation happening directly afterwards?
Might as well give feedback. I started to have shoulder pain recently. I worked on the recovery phase. That was not useless, but was also not the issue. Turns out I have been generating almost all power from deltoids during pull phase (so shoulders). Wrong muscle group. Most power should come from latissimus dorsi (and pectoral). It is crazy that you can seemingly accomplish the same movement via entirely different group muscles. That information was hard to find. I have strong shoulders from years of push ups and pull ups, so I used that. And that got me fast (28s 50m waterstart). But that was wrong. Shoulders are only for stabilization. If that can help.
I'm an 9 time Ironman, and recently have found that pain is coming through my left shoulder only. I believe that your comments about "overuse" specifically touched me and will be focusing on the drills, rest and recovery. I've been concentrating on Bike/Run and rested the swim for about a month now and will be getting back to swimming soon. IM's are primarily freestyle. Is there a better stroke to ease back into than FS??
Thanks so much for this video! I've recently developed some minor shoulder pain which seems to match "swimmer's shoulder". Since I am almost exclusively swimming for my workouts, I probably have some muscle imbalances. I'm definitely going to add these dryland trainings to my routine and reduce my swimming volume a bit to see if it helps. I may consult with a doctor and physical therapist as well for some individualized remediation.
AFTER ONE HOUR SWIMMING I USED TO GET PAIN IN RIGHT SHOULDER BUT IT COMES NORMAL AFTER GETTING GOOD REST. I AM A PARA NATIONAL MEDALISTS CATEGORY S5. DO U HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR PARA SWIMMERS AS WE HAVE NO MOVEMENT IN LEGS. SO WE HAVE TO PUT MORE STRENGTH ON ARMS.
Do the catch stroke after your recovery hand pass ur shoulder, basically before it hits the water. This also makes you faster and prevent the shoulder injuries.
I've been dealing with a right shoulder injury that's been preventing me from swimming for close to two years now. I'm hoping some of these shoulder exercises will allow me to get back in the water sometimes soon.
I’m training for a triathlon. I was running and biking thinking I could put off the swimming portion. Nope. My shoulders are sore and now I’m not sure I’ll make the race anymore…..
So many swimmers have shoulder problems... this is so important!
fr
Shoulder injuries when I swim. Knee injuries when I run. Fml 😅😂
I have got grt knowledge Thanks

similar. I am trying EVF during catch phase and high elbow pull to avoid injury

Thanks! Just back in the pool after 2 months lock down. Taking it slow. Great video
Glad to hear you are back in the pool!
Thank you for this I learned the hard way but also my coach has been telling me to do bilateral breathing😬

How long did it take for your shoulders to cool off?
Please make proper video on shoulder rotation during free style
I love this guy. He’s actually a real life merman.
Yeah I deal with frozen shoulder it definitely can be issue with swimming. Stretching and shoulder exercises definitely help.

yes swimming is difficult
what is the best way for swimmers who have scolosis?

Thanks for sharing your perspective! We're all different and the same, so appreciate you leaving a comment! Happy swimming :)

I am presently rehabing my shoulder for some impingement issues - I have already started the scapular push-ups...
Many many thanks for this post!
How many of you are watching this because you’re having shoulder pain after your swim session.

Great video as always. Isn't torso rotation in freestyle the biggest technique aspect to protect the shoulders (apart from not crossing over)?
i think so, but, also not lfting your head to high.

First. and this topic is all I have been waiting for.
Glad to hear it!!!
Ive gotten the swimmers shoulder 3 times already. :( it comes and goes and its terrible and interferes with my competition
Thank u so much
I've not had it yet it but I think it's because I mainly do the fly. Not sure. I also alternate a lot between front crawl and backstroke.
Every time Fares cuts to the whiteboard I feel like I’m back at university :P
Haha nice!
How much more resistant is the water than air??? 🤔
800 times. And you've said it 800 times. This is not a complaint 😂😉
@@flonfs 🙌
800 times denser than air.

I have this injury! Help!
Hey, what can I do about headaches mostly at the back of my head especially when swimming underwater or swimming head first.
blow out air, that's generally from water pressure, also if you swallow, that reduces the pressure in your sinuses
Who else is here watching while already injured? :'(
Yr my coach
Please make videos on flip turn practice video done by adults
My shoulders started hitting yesterday, and then boom. This vidoes pops up 😭😍
Omg me too!!
Fares university major, would you please give me your thoughts on shoulder click in certain movement's, not usually during swim, i don't believe.
"Risk" of injury, not "Chance"
I’m training for a triathlon. I was running and biking thinking I could put off the swimming portion. Nope. My shoulders are sore and now I’m not sure I’ll make the race anymore…..
It is said that swimming is better on your joints than running etc ,but since I starred swimming I have shoulder ,elbow ,and knee issues .😢
I like the Superman on the floor, i expand my belly, but should my body feel some strained, not pain ?
You should feel a stretch, yes!
I have shoulder pain while butterfly stroke….
I want Turkish subtitles for all videos please
Oldu paşam başka arzunuz ? :D

Glad it was helpful!
Ok but is water 800x more resistant than air?
You tell me ;)
Awesomeee

I've had pain in my shoulders a couple of times after swimming and realised after the fact that it was poor technique.
