I live in Alaska, family ran a business on the top of a mountain, so yes, I kinda needed 4 wheel drive. I had a 1996 RAV4. Absolute BEST car I've ever owned for truly horrific winter driving conditions. I sold it to a relative when second baby came along, and she managed to total it, so it never had the chance to make it into the 100,000's of miles. I bought the thing sight unseen, my husband had told me that I could get whatever car I wanted as long as it was a Toyota. When I went to pick it up, I thought it looked like a car that George Jetson would have driven, but Wow, weird as it looked, it was an awesome car.

It didn’t burn a drop of oil and would still do a Dragy verified 0-60 of 6.49 seconds even at 300,000+ miles. I still own two of them (2010 & 2011) that my son and I use as our daily drivers. My grandfather, who died in his late eighties, was a small rancher. He took care of a herd of cattle on lease pastures. He only owned but one 4WD vehicle, a CJ7. His mainstay was Chevy pickups, all of which were rear wheel drive. He drove in every type of terrain to be found in Harris County which also meant negotiating very deep mud. So, yes, Scotty is right about 4WD. It is generally unnecessary save under very, very special circumstances.

When I bought my Mitsubishi Pajero (long version) in 2012, I read car magazines reviews of it and many argued that it was "old technology" as if that was a negative factor. To me, that was an advantage. I need a reliable car was proven and tested technology and it wasn't that far off neither. It did have "antiskid" and automatic powerdistribution between the wheels in fourwheeldrive - if you want that. After ten years and 200+k km it really looks well and the corrosion is a small problem, because I treat it well. I live in Norway and here studded tires and fourwheel drive is a good thing in the winter.I also use it when towing my caravan in the summer because the manual recommends it, but I am not sure why. Just tought that if I ever had a warranty issue, it's good to have followed the instructions in the manual. When the car was new, I had it tectylized, afterwards it has just been polished by pro's twice a year and during winter washed every 1-2 weeks including underneath to clean away roadsalt. That's it. Parts are usually massive and expensive, but they come with a 3-year warranty, but lasts longer. Got a diesel engineheater to reduce wear and tear during winter, plus getting the comforts of a warm car and easy start plus reduced fuel consumption, but having said that, I will have to drive for another ten years before I have saved the cost of installing it.
It's so good to hear somebody with a practical approach to carfinance. Neither the Raw4 was/is a cheap car, but lasts forever, so cost pr, year is favourable. Got my budget for these kind of things and it holds so far. When I bought it I also asked for offer oon future services and got it. They said that it could only apply to parts and I fully understand that, pay the mechanic well, so they do a best possible job and you attract the best ones. Every now and then additional work has to be done on top of the regular service and I then negotiate a "package"-price. I see then that they also give me a de facto discount on work costs (as they are a major part of the bill too keep the offer, by estimating less time for jobs than it takes. You can't change brakepads in 12 minutes, 0.2 hrs :).
The thing is to make the mechanics understand that the car is your legs and should be treated with the same care and say it with a smile and politeness. I also think it helps that I come back year after year if I can to the same place (I may be travelling when servicetime is due, but with some planning I can often make it work, so that I see the same mechanics at most service intervals. Cars is not only about specifications and the price, it's about how you maintain and keep them at predictable costs too.

I had 2007 rav4 v6. Just sold it to mazda dealer for 3 thousand. Got cx5 mazda. I had 238 thousand miles on it, but I had plenty of problems with it. Changed the steering column twice, burning oil after 180 thousand miles. The gas pedal got stuck i almost crushed, it was a recall. The fuel pump went when it was under warranty, they fixed it. A few years later it died again, I had to pay. So while it was a good solid car it had its problems.
