    This was from an interview with Ben Burnley in 2019;
    “It all started because I was watching a lot of Forensic Files stuff where there were a bunch of unsolved mysteries. There was a Jane Doe that washed up on shore and she just got buried with no story. It was like a meaningless person. Nobody knew who she was to the point where whatever she did was all gone. So, Jane references Jane Doe but then making a story up for her because she had nothing. That’s what started it and then once I started writing, it turned into more than that. ... This person Jane was just gone because they were unidentified for so long and lived this entire life for nothing.“

      Thanks for the quote! Really intriguing backstory to this song and makes me wonder what her story was. In general its pretty crazy and deep to think about how many people live entire lives unknown and their stories are lost

    If you go off the video she is dead. She has no reflection in the mirrors. You can't reflect what isn't there. She either killed herself or overdosed. He's tearing himself up, looking for any mention of himself, or what he meant to her. There's nothing there, so in the end he finally lets go, abandons the diary and moves on with his life. There's also a line, " If i had to, I would put myself right beside you." I think he contemplates suicide, but after seeing no mention of himself in her diary he thinks better of it and chooses to move on.

      We are glad you enjoyed! Have a few more coming up this week from the album Saturate... Breaking Benjamin is awesome so I can see why you are a fan! Will need to check out some of those covers 😉. Take care and rock on!

    Breath and Diary of Jane are the 2 songs that really rocketed Breaking Benjamin into the stratosphere, in my opinion. Saturate and We Are Not Alone are both incredible albums, but Phobia put them in the mainstream. Then they did a tour with Three Days Grace and Seether, which was AMAZING when I saw them here in Indiana!

      Yeah, just about anyone who has heard Breaking Benjamin knows Diary of Jane. Was surprised by how underrated Saturate is comparatively, it has a great sound! Did not know they did a tour with 3DG, that is pretty cool and a band I also would like for Rob to see! -Serge

    You will see a lot of death and dark stuff from these guys, originally dubbed as emo, then alternative, now post grunge rock

      Makes sense, a lot of rock covers heavy themes surrounding death, addiction, depression, etc. Interesting how the band genre classification changes over time

    This song is about a the guy loves this woman but she dies, and wants to see her diary to see if she ever loved him which she didn't.

    Your comment about breaking up and moving on is really well put and needed. I just got out of my relationship (almost 3 years) and hard to not break down in tears every time I even have a single thought about it. What she did was awful but i'm trying not to let resentment win.

    Interesting discussion! Both versions of the song interpretation are viable. Don't completely agree about the "spoiled milk" theory. Life is more complicated 🙂

    Yes. Jane is a girl that died that he loved but she did not love him. She committed suicide and she is a lost sole in purgatory and she hunts him. In her diary he hopes to find her love for him but he knows it's not there.
