I have probably watched about 10-12 videos on disassembly/installation of the clutch and none of them explained the basics of how everything works together like you did!! I really like how you have all the parts pulled part and show how they interact with each other when they are moving. Great video i am having problems when i get to third gear on my motorcycle there is a lot of chater and grinding and then it disapears when i go to fourth gear what do you think it sounds like my problem is ?

this is a great explanation, this is how you teach people in school. By showing them exactly what is happening, not by books or by slideshows, but by taking it apart, see what happens when you individually put pieces one by one together
Some may think your commentary is elementary but it is perfect, any one can understand how it works and see the result of squeezing a clutch lever and understand the results. This may very well save some from burning out their clutches now that they know what is happening. Thanks so much Al!
Dude! This explanation is the best on RUclips! It's so detailed and so simple. I watched some other explanations but they didn't really explain it as thoroughly as you did :) I already know how car clutches work, I was just curious about bike clutches because I am almost done with my bike license!
This is a very nice explanation of how a clutch works. The one thing I would add is the fact that this is a wet clutch with engine oil circulating through it. The viscosity or thickness of the oil could effect how the clutch operates. The oil is used to prolong clutch life. Engine oil viscosity can be a factor in how well the clutch operates.
This is incredibly informative, i feel like some tricky doors in my brain have now been unlocked so i can better understand my bike’s inner workings. Thank you!

+31kroko When the clutch plates wear out the clutch cover sits closer to the left side of the engine and so does the pushing shaft. That causes the extra slack on the clutch cable. (In the replies Chris correctly pointed out that clutch cable slack decreases as the clutch plates wear out.)
Actually as the plates wear,the outer plate moves further in.The pushrod clearance DECREASES consequently the clutch cable slack decreases.Notwithstanding the fact that over time the cable wears/stretches and increases the slack in the cable
Listen to Chris, he knows what he's talking about. When you see guys in supercross/motocross adjust their clutch free play during a moto, most of the time they're doing that because they've ground off half the diameters of the plates because they abuse the clutch so much (they purposely slip the clutch coming out of corners, etc. for more power - when they do this they force the plates to grind against each other). This causes the clutch pack to decrease in diameter, which forces the pushrod (the outer plate is on the end of the pushrod on the clutch side) more towards the other side of the engine and pushes the clutch lever outwards, away from the handlebars. The clutch lever itself won't disengage the clutch plates in the same place that they're used to, so it throws them off a bit when trying to go fast (they're used to having a bit of slack in the cable, so when there isn't any it feels different). The main problem is that when they wear down a clutch pack, the clutch lever doesn't have much room to move outward before it runs out of adjustment and stops (the pushrod/outer plate only can move a little bit towards the other side of the engine until they stop too). The clutch pack gets thinner, the end of the pushrod & outer plate isn't close enough to clamp down on it with enough force, and the plates start to slip against each other. When that happens, you get less power to the rear wheel, and that's very bad. A slipping clutch wears even faster, so that compounds the situation. If you have a ton of slack in the cable you won't be able to fully disengage the clutch. You'll only be able to push the plate away from the clutch pack a tiny bit. This can happen like when Chris said above if you have a new cable and it stretches out. Assuming you have the correct clutch cable and its installed correctly (and adjusted to where it should be on the bars), there are adjustments you can make to the end of the nut on the pushrod to take out the slack. Or you could have a worn pushrod assembly, the ball could be all battered and flattened, etc.
This is really great way to explain how this works. I had a vague idea but never as clear of a picture as I do now after watching this video. Looking forward to watching the other videos as well

It's crazy how similar that engine is to a Yamaha Blaster engine (they came out in 1988 and kept the same engine design until 2006 when Yamaha stopped selling them - they were just 200cc air cooled units). So much of the bottom end looks almost exactly the same (minus the water pump). It's interesting to see when manufacturers take/borrow from existing designs. 2-strokes are so simple, I love them!
