  • This jewelry beading technique might look hard. But once you know how, it's super-easy. It doesn't take long to build the 2 main halves of this structure before stitching them together at the equator. Reinforcing takes a lot longer. The more you reinforce, the puffier your pillow becomes. How long that takes depends on the size of the holes in your beads, plus the width of your thread.

There are 144 beads in each pillow. Glass and metal seed beads will work well but only if they are plump - in other words, shaped more like doughnuts than pancakes. Perfectly spherical or oval beads will produce the most even pillows, including Czech glass druks, Czech fire polish, sterling silver round beads, plastic beads, wood beads, and so on. I encourage you to experiment with which beads work best for you.
One thing to keep in mind: if you use glass beads to make your pillow, you run the risk of cracking one or more beads as you reinforce. And there might not be a good way to replace missing beads, because the holes of adjacent beads will already be full of thread. So when you're just getting started learning the pillow, consider using metal, plastic or wood beads first, which are less likely to crack.

Where was this technique invented? In China. How do I know? I collected samples many years ago. I'm guessing this structure was invented in the late 20th or early 21st century. Each pillow blends rings of 5 and six beads. It could be called "3-dimensional pentagon/hexagon stitch" for lack of a better name. No comparable structure has been found in the world of geometry. This structure was probably first invented in beads.

Hi Valerie, how do you make the structure "puff" up like the lantern. I see that it was flat at the end. Thanks

Hi, @sharonsee - that's a very good question. To make it puff up, you keep reinforcing the beads over and over. Until the structure is fully "puffed" - or blown up like a balloon. It's not fast - but it's definitely worth it. Thanks for stopping by!
