  • October 17, 1966 was one of the darkest days in the history of the F.D.N.Y. On that day, twelve members of the New York City Fire Department were killed in the line of duty. The following account is one man's personal experience on that tragic day.

Heart wrenching story , I have seen that picture of those firefighters being brought out when I was a kid and it never left me .I don't know why I never heed the call to join because being a firefighter is the only job I ever wanted to do and still would . god bless you guys you are the best. I did volunteer down at the WTC for 4 days on site. Nothing would of kept me out to try and help FDNY.

I've only just stumbled upon this tragedy. It really should have a bigger profile. Its also a facinating window into the culture of the GOOD people of New York. Good outcomes are built on the ashes of the brave.

I thought I knew about all the large FDNY Firefighter LODD's. I did not know about this one. Thanks for posting.

I was an Auxiliary Fire Captain when that fire broke out. I responded with an Engine Company from Brooklyn New York City.

Three of the guys who broke me in at Ladder 3 survived that fire. (L-3 lost 13 members on 9/11) I still have my copy of the fire/ coroner report from that fire. Most do not realize how we saw the firefight in front of us, and it was so different for those companies a few yards away. After I retired in 2004 I ran into a young lad named Gilvary. His father was a proby in L-7 and the officer kept him outside because he knew this one was bad. That act kept him alive, and his son was born a year later.

I know Vincent Dun. In his excellent 23rd Street fire You Tube video he spells out why the floor didn't just collapse but instead just fell in chunks. I always wondered why that happened. I thought my guardian angel was looking out for me, but his video explained that idea away.

R.I.P. Thank you for such a fascinating piece of history. I have been by the site of Wonder Drug, and to the best of my knowledge, there is unfortunately no plaque or reminder of the sacrifice and dedication that happened at that scene.
