- The FDNY members assigned to ladder companies throughout New York City are charged with searching for the victimes of an emergency. Find out how these members are able to run into a burning building when everyone else is running out.

I’ve been to the Tin House when I was an intern for the FDNY so while I was off duty from my internship in the New York City Fire Department from Engine 10 I visited a number of different firehouses in the 5 boroughs and they had me respond with them while I was on rest from Engine 10.
Much respect to all our firefighters (my older cousin who is out of Harlem). My cousin wanted me to join but I decided many years ago to join the FDNY EMS Division (Paramedic) I'll let you bring them out of the fire & into my ambulance 😝 stay safe all my brothers & sisters 🚨🚒🚨🚑🚨🇺🇸🇺🇸

Im a fireman from Sweden, and we have a whole different tactic on a fire, also on te equitment and tasks and so on, so this is realy informative. One tip for the ladder crews though: the thermal camera also spots humans, so use it to search for that aswell.
I'm a volunteer in NY, the thing our chief tells us is to use the "Therm" to look for people, in the volunteer service its never used as often as it should be
We do, but not everyone use the thermal camera.

as I said, in Germany we have very different tactics, a Enginge is min staffed with 6 FF, max with 9, while a ladder is staffed with 2-3 FF. The Engine Company Rescues and extinguishes Fire, while the Ladder company "just" drives the Ladder to the scene and sets it up.

I plan on joining BCoFD when I'm 16. I will have to go through almost everything FDNY does. Before I get to do any real live burn trainings, I'll have to do a CPAT. (Including the 75 Ibs on my back while doing a 3 minute stair climber). Best thing to do now is workout. I have 3 more years ahead of me till I go into service. So use your time wisely. stay safe in the future! :)

I hope that no one believes what soxhater is saying here.....I took and did well on the hardest physical the FDNY ever gave and no one died taking that physical and I don't know of anyone who died while in proby school.

@kalleok they are a ladder company they go in with no hose they do a search for victims and they vent they also find the fire the engine company brings a hose line

Basically...the ladder companies are SAR and the Engine companies fight the fire.
Ventilation.
Forcible entry.
Searching for fire/victims
Controlling utilities.
Checking for fire extension.
These are BREAD & BUTTER tasks assigned to truck companies.
Notice NONE involve WATER,the primary fire extinguishing agent.
ELEVATED MASTER STREAMS are the ONLY association a truck company has with water.
This makes working on a truck slightly more hazardous than engine work.

I'm an explorer firefighter from TN and I hope to get into the FDNY when I turn 21 but worried about the 1st physical exam but not so much the academy at Randall's Island

Has tower ledder the same position?
All of the assignments that were mentioned are the same in a tower ladder.
Is there a special reason, that they enter at apartment wiht out at hose?
To locate the fire and to direct the engine where to stretch the hose line.
Is it right that a Ladder Company searches an apartment without any hose? While the Engine Company is putting out fires but is not looking for victims?

So I m a volunteer firefighter and we have our jaws on a light rescue can I asked why a ladder has it
I assume it's easier to just dispatch a ladder company, which are extremely common, to MVA's and any other emergency that requires the jaws, instead of dispatching one of the very few rescue companies
I know this is 10 months late but there are only five rescue companies in NYC. One for every borough. There are 176 Ladder companies in NYC. So it makes sense for both the Rescues and Ladders to have the jaws. If it's a bad call, any of the Rescues will respond and act as well. Rescues are usually staffed by members who have been on the job for some time.

Your comment is NOT a very reassuring comparison if you're assigned to a truck company and your primary means of egress is cut off by more fire than a pump can can extinguish.
On the flipside,if tasked with ENGINE work and you are in the same situation,you have a way to get out via your hoseline and PLENTY of water to douse ANY flame that may threaten to consume or trap you.
Truckies don't have that luxury.
