WHY INDIA CHOOSE RAFALE INSTEAD OF MORE SU 30 MKI? TOP 5 FACTS

  • INTRODUCTION:
Defense updates has received large number of request from the viewers on why India chose to buy Rafale instead of increasing the number of Sukhoi 30 MKI, which is a very capable fighter. It is well known that Sukhoi Su 30MKI ($75 million apiece) costs 1/3 that of Rafale , and India also has got excellent understanding of its operations having used it for sometime now.
In this video , we look at top 5 reasons why India choose to have Rafale instead of having more Sukhoi 30 MKI.
    ROLE:
Sukhoi Su 30 MKI is designed for air dominance. Su-30MKI aerodynamic configuration is geared for air to air combat. The design allow for high angle of attack (AoA) flights . The integral aerodynamic configuration combined with thrust vectoring results in extreme maneuverability. It is not that Su-30MKI is not capable of ground attack , but it more of an air fighter.
The Su-30MKI has a range of 3,000 km with internal fuel which ensures a 3.75 hour combat mission. Its air refueling system can increase the flight duration up to 10 hours with a range of 8,000 km. Su-30MKIs can also use the Cobham 754 refueling pods. This means Su 30 MKI can go deep into enemy territories and take the fight to the opposing air force.
The Rafale is referred to as an "omnirole" aircraft by Dassault, its maker. Equipped with a wide range of weapons, the Rafale is intended to perform air supremacy, interdiction, aerial reconnaissance, ground support, in-depth strike, anti-ship strike and nuclear deterrence missions.
One important aspect is that Rafale can be used from carrier aircrafts making it a very versatile fighter.
As viewers may know, MMRC deal in which Rafael won ,stands for Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft. So India’s intention was to acquire a multirole fighter instead of a air dominance fighter which India already has in form of SU 30 MKI.
    STEALTH:
Sukhoi 30 MKI is large aircraft and was also not designed with stealth in mind. The size has many benefits , but has a critical disadvantage . It has large RCS of 5. This makes it an easier target when compared to Rafale which has a RCS of 1.
So , in case of operations in regions defended by advanced air defense system with powerful radars, the Rafale is much better aircraft.
    FRANCE
France is part of European Union but it does not use Eurofighter Typhoon. France was humiliated in World War 2.
Since then , France has been very particular about building its own defense equipments, be it fighters or submarines. It is also known to have a very independent view about strategic relationships. This is very important, as France can be trusted, that it will not bow to foreign pressures to stop supplies ,if and when India is in a conflict.
India’s experience with France has been good, it has been a a very dependable partner for India.
India has been using Mirage build by Dassault for a long time and it has been a very effective jet for India. From spare parts to repairs , France has stood by India.
    RUSSIA
Russia has been the most trusted ally of India. It helped India in 1971 war, when US, UK,Pakistan had tried to defeat india.
Russia has supplied India and continuing to do so, with top of the line defense equipment.
In late 1990s, Russia had transferred technology for Su30 MKI, India's frontline fighter aircraft, which at that time was Russia’s most modern equipment, its most modern plane.
Recently , Russia has agreed to sell india , S 400 the most dreaded air defense system in the world, and is a state of art Russian system.
There is mainly one problem with Russia, that India must not be dependent on a single nation for the military equipment. There is a saying , do not put all your eggs in the same basket. Diversifying of critical equipments is must.
    CHINA FACTOR
China , India’s main adversary also uses Sukhoi Flanker variants which it had acquired from Russia . They have even reversed engineered these aircrafts .Though Su 30 MKI is customized by India with Israeli & French sub systems, China have decent idea of this aircraft , specially its aerodynamic capabilities.
In any conflict, this can be very useful from Chinese perspective. Same goes for India.
On the other hand, there is no road map , where Rafale can end into Chinese hand .
This will give India an edge in air combat scenarios.

French disagreed with Russia operations in Ukrain, as they disagreed with USA operations in Iraq. George Bush couldn't do anything to make the French shut up, and when France cancelled the contract of selling 2 warships to Russia, Putin couldn't do anything against it. Say whatever you want, but French have more balls and independance than many other countries.

I've used artificial text to speech narration for many years and you can vastly improve the output by writing your text to be more "conversational", adding more commas (pauses) where a real human would have to breath, and phonetically spelling things out. The narration says "sue thirty" instead of "S.U. thirty".

"cheap yet capable" - not possible. titanium is not cheap. titanium machining is not cheap - requires both non-cheap machines and non-cheap manpower. 2 (iron)+2(lower skilled manpower)=4(cheap?). 20(titanium)+20(higher skilled manpower)=40 (costly?).

Most important reason is Rafale's nuclear capabilities. We have mirage 2000 & jaguar for this which are too old and Su-30mki is not made for nuclear strikes but still equipping BrahMos-A to it. One more reason is that Rafale serviceability is 80%-90% while Su-30mki have 60%-70% so basically remaining jets can't be used in case of war. Basically we are getting better range, stealthy jet, with meteor missiles, multi-role nuclear capable jet which is perfect for our requirement for time being.

    • @youbdu2981

Dassault don't give rafale for nuclear bombing so India don't have the capabilities to modified rafale

    • @Theparadox14
      @Theparadox14 7 лет назад +1

youbdu29 Lol pointing that to a nuclear triad bit childish. France gave us mirage 2000 way back and we made it nuclear capable ourselves. France is replacing their old Mirage 2000N with Rafales for nuclear strikes and we are doing the same. They will not deliver any nuclear capability to us but we are going to modify it for nukes ourselves. And we are working on Nirbhay & BrahMos-NG too.

Because supersonic sonic missiles are to heavy to carry, brahmos weight is about 3000kg. It is very difficult for an aircraft to carry such weight. Only long aircraft like sukhoi can carry brahmos.

China made some own fighters (who looks more like "copies from"), but use Russian designed engines because they was unable to make the engines, same thing for helicopters: in the 80' they did copies from french helis, but was unable to make the engines despite reverse technology: such thing need a very experienced design bureau, not forgot that France did work on jet engines (first ram jets , and double flow turbo jets (Rateau SRA1) in 1939) size the debut of the last century, and begin experiences in delta wing aircrafts 90 years ago, was only heawy retarded from WW2...

  • @Thetequilashooter1

Plain and simple, Rafale won because it met the criteria that India was looking for its Air Force. The top two aircraft in the tender were the Rafale and Eurofighter. The US aircraft that competed, the F-16 and 18 did well, but part of the tender criteria is that the home nation must have plans to retain the aircraft in their own home country, which was not the case as both are being replaced by the F-35. They are also older designed aircraft, and India was looking for aircraft that could grow and hasn’t already technologically matured. As an American, I am glad for France. They have a very good aircraft and they deserved to win.

#2 - Very independent view.... not bow to foreign pressures...
2014-2015 France bowed to foreign pressure from - POLAND.
One of the point of pressure was the Polish deals on submarines and naval helicopters that the Poles had pending with the French, and threatened to cancel their orders if the French deliver on the contract they had with Russia. To provide the two carriers (build and completed by French), and allow Russia to build two more under license.
Then the Poles still ditched the French. Getting the subs from Sweden, and copters from USA.

Look am French and the two neighbor nations are quarreling and fighting for some 1000 years , they are the "best enemies" and "worse friends" of each other in Europe if not in the world . Really I do not see the British pride bowing to the French and I do not see the French malice condescending to betray their Argentinian clients to save the face of the Brits. In as much as, at that time, Thatcher was ruling UK and Mitterrand ruling France and they could not stand each other...What I think is that MI5 (great respect for them ! ) which has "dormant agents" in the French military complex and in the political sphere had the means (blackmail ? money ? exchange of paramount information ?) to get the necessary technical information. In any case, I do not see the Brits "crying"...since they have no tears when they fight !

Nope, the argentine air force only has a few AM39 Exocets (3 or 5) before the conflict start and the french engineers were still in Buenos Aires, helping AAF in installing the missiles on super etendart. Nevertheless, it's true that after the outbreak of Flaklands war started, the french governement embargoed the missiles, at they were able to cause a serious threat to the british task forces. The Argentinian tried to bought some on black market, but the british secret service prevented them from doing that. The disabling code is just a legend.

In fact, there was a competition between F-16, Saab Gripen, Mig-35, Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale and F/A-18 (most probably all fighters in the latest block).
The first step was a theoretic very detailed and intense evaluation - and only two planes were chosen to enter practical flight tests: Rafale and Typhoon.
In those tests the Typhoon dominated all tests and was the first choice of the IAF. However the cost per muster plus the cost for the infrastructure (India already uses Dassault fighter jets, which have similar infrastructure to the Rafale), let the defense ministry choose the Dassault Rafale as far more cost effective option.
Why they didn’t chose the Mig (which would have been definitely cheaper at probably the same or higher performance?
    • Dependency on Russia (they don’t want to have all eggs in one basket) - I don’t necessary think, that this is a very valid reason, as they have other areas, which they are pretty much full Russian.
    • Mig-35 hasn’t been fully developed at times of the competition.
    • There were a far increased accident rate of Su-30 MKI’s - they might have doubted Russian reliability.
    • Consistency of performance: Russian planes are all about top line performance - but real life performance is often far below the average.
    • Russian avionics seem to be quite behind the American and European competition (e.g. despite the fact, that Russia announced a decade ago, to update to AESA radar, they still didn’t deployed it in any variant. This is only one example, which shows, how technological advanced they really are - obviously this is contrary to their propaganda).

Russia declare the war to Ukraine... Nothing to do with USA. And don't worry, French government and French citizen think in really different way. As a French person I was completely disagree with this decision to not delivery the two war boat to Russia. Most points are invalid.
    1) stealth: you can’t really call it stealth if a plane has a RCS of more than about 0.1m2. And yes, a plane with a 5x less RCS has some advantages, but especially modern integrated air defense systems have no issues to pick planes nearly at the same distance in this scenario - especially considering that the armed RCS is far bigger!
    2) Role: Su-30MKI is multirole (especially compared to Su-35). And let’s face it: the issues are more about the avionics and less the rest of the specs.
    3) the video especially points out how trustworthy Russia is in its arms dealer role - but then also contradicts with its “all eggs in one basket moniker”
    4) the Rafale is capable of carrier operations: that is a big fallacy - as the carrier version is a completely different variant and the competition has been conducted by the Indian Air Force!
The real reason? There might be some points of the video which adds to the decision- but most likely are the shorter lifecycle of Russian equipment, the accident proneness and the technological differences of the systems. India probably spends a lot into the Sukhois, as it customizes it’s avionics with Israeli and French systems. The Rafale comes as ready package, which might be a far better deal!

This is a very perceptive and well thought out explanation! Very well done! However, I am somewhat troubled by the statement that France will stand by its allies in all conditions. Please remember that the blocked the Israel and did not give them the aircraft they had payed for, when they bowed to arab oil pressures. As far as putting all of your eggs into one basket - that I agree with. The proper answer, though it is expensive, is that India must eventually design and build competitive aircraft of their own - top line 5th and 6th generation fighters. The Tejas is a beginning, but only a beginning.

It seems to me that another reason is that India, via HAL, is an active member in the development of the Sukhoi Su-57 (formerly the T-50, formerly PAK-FA), which is the next generation of 'air dominance' craft. It seems to me that that Su-30MK is a stop-gap until the newer Su-57 can come to the point of sufficient level of production to provide a 'step-up' for the IAF. But, the 'multi-role' small fighter, particularly from Dassault, with whom the Indians have already decades of cooperation, makes ultimate sense.

It is understood that the Rafale's price is 3x or 4x that of the Su30. Also, the overall cost of maintenance of Western ac is usually much higher than that of Russian ac. Russia has also proved historically to be a steady ally. Effectively, by buying the Sukhoi, within the same budget we could have had 3 times the number of high quality combat aircraft available which perhaps could be upgraded with necessary avionics to match the Rafale. 3x the combat capability would go a long way in ensuring air supremacy.

A mix of a few fighters from different design sources and using different components reduces the risk of any single system being grounded. An aircraft might be grounded due to some previously unknown issue or due to the supply chain being cut off. Ideally India could have Su-30MKI, Rafale, and AMCA in roughly equal numbers. Each of these platforms could be built in India and have domestic suppliers for many components but may still rely on foreign supply for certain components. Splitting these into three groups would allow two thirds of the total force to remain fully operational in the event that one is grounded or limited in operations.
Unfortunately India appears to be dedicated to supporting some indigenous designs that are inferior to some foreign designs even if built in India. This does not improve the logistical situation because India will still be limited in production of certain components. Access to domestic production of some components is even more restricted if foreign designs are not purchased. This weakens the domestic designs and delays their development.
More Tejas variants should be cancelled, leave only Tejas Mk1A. Then focus on large scale domestic production of Rafale and AMCA development. Production of Su-34 strike aircraft could also be of use, to replace retired MiG-27s and supplement in service SEPECAT Jaguars.

Rafale and Raphael are two distinct/different words!
There is no e between f and l in Rafale.
Rafale is translated as fire burst or wind gust.
    Raphael is just an archangel.

Hm, let’s not talk about stealth - because the Rafale has also no stealth. It is not a “beacon” - but loaded with missiles and bombs, it will have also a much higher RCS of 1. It cannot be seen as stealthy (in fact even the Su-57 has just rudimentary stealth performance, but due to its internal storage, it would have advantages in a reallife scenario).

That is not completely true (at least not overall in the competition).
In fact, there was a competition between F-16, Saab Gripen, Mig-35, Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale and F/A-18 (probably all fighters in the latest block).

Dominik MJ rafale is better period. The f18 and f16 wasn't chosen bc they will not be offered as loaded with electronics. Both are stripped down shells of planes but then again a stripped down Turkish f16 splashed a Russian plane. India pulled out of the t50 deal with Russia bc what India was paying didn't equate to the performance it displayed when asked for a demo. Main reason Russia does not have the resources to produce and or upgrade it's higher end Fighters on mass scale. Ex total number of su35 built today is far behind what the US can and has produced. In 15 yrs Russia has put fourth the mig29 so said upgrade the su35 in low numbers and the t50 still not fully functional. Where as the US has designed test produced and fielded the f22 the f35 the f23 blackwidow next yr and the b21 and the sr72. On top of all of this Lockheed Martin just tested the tr3b which is gravity drive propulsion. Remember this as Russia is known for their great maskarovkas the US is well known to present to the American public of a new technology and new plane when in fact it isn't infact it's made public bc they have something a whole lot better. Ex. F117 debued in late 80s was in service around 78 or 79. The f22 was in service way before the world was made aware of it. Sorry if that butt hurts some ppl but with a 600 billion dollar a yr research defense budget you can develop some really cutting edge toys. The main reason and again I don't wanna cause no butt hurt ppl but this will most likely do it. America will never allow Russia to even come close to its technical ability or military might intact they cant. 2nd America will never allow Islamic nations to pose a threat to America. Ex Israel was given the first f35 for field test and only Israel bc that f35 was the closest to the US version and well we all saw what happened to Russia's Sam site when it fired on the plane. This is why Russia is putting out the bullshit news it does. Russia is surrounded by NATO China knows it better step carefully. Look off skoreas coast see the amount of force America can amass and that not even half. It's what you don't see under the water that's the real threat that's the 3 nuclear boomer subs off Korea's coast. Each sub has 24 slicbms with 8 warheads a missile . That's just the subs don't forget the land bases ICBMs or bombers America has. Any one that remotely thinks Russia is even close to us tech is simply a fool. America has 14 of these subs with 7 at sea all the time. The main issue is they arrived off Korea's coast 2 weeks before the fleet arrived and the subs went right by Chinese islands and they didn't have a clue they were their. This makes China nervous and it should. The other 4 are well 3 are off Russia's coast and Putin knows this the last one is in the Indians ocean just waiting for the call we all hope never comes. Sorry but Putin isn't stupid he knows he cannot compete but he has to appear to his ppl as strong when intact Putin is controlled opposition.

The risk isn't to India. It's the poor fools who sell to India. India's procurement process is beset by corruption, bureaucratic inertia, management chaos and lack of funds. It's a nightmare dealing with all this, and the vendor always loses.

Stupid video. First and only reason is, that India is poor country and has not enough money to maintain SU30 properly. That's why many of them already crashed. India hopes that Rafale will be less vulnerable to metal fatigue and more pilots wil be able to perform training missions on single airframe. Rafale is made mainly from titanium and carbon fiber and is lighter, so airframe is more durable. BUT. If Indians are not idiots, they would buy jet trainers, for example Yak 130 and don't use SU30 for training. But they are idiots. The main problem of India is, that they don't have money and they are wasting them on expensive hardware instead of capable trainers.

Try coming out of your self built ball of ignorance and self deceit. You many obviously be a racist too to have such "out-dated", hate filled, prejudiced opinions. The biggest reason India went with more Rafales is that the Russian engines in the SU30 are not very reliable, and getting replacement parts and engines from Russia has been VERY problematic for India. At any given time over 1/2 of the SU30MKIs are out of service just due to engine parts/issues alone. IE right now there are probably less than 100 SU30s able to fly and fight, while Russia drags its feet helping to get replacement parts/etc to the Indian air force.

Some valid points. France is no longer the same country as in pre Gulf War and present day Trump world. It CAN BE trusted MORE now. It sees how the powers have changed their alliances and focus. The Three Musketeers "war cry" doesn't quite ring true for France, today. Plus, the US has ALWAYS regarded France with a sneer and a roll of the eyes; culturally attuned, as always! 😏 Thank you for the video. 👏👏👏

There is a little mistake in the video. The war of 1971 was the independence war of Bangladesh in which India helped the patriotic Bangladeshis to achieve their independence. I don't know why people keep on saying that the war of 1971 was india's war with Pakistan. But the real truth is it was the war of East Pakistan, which is now Bangladesh, vs West Pakistan, now Pakistan. India was a helper in the war.

SIMPLE ANSWER: Scamgress Party has always done deals with European defence companies and for smaller deals with as many different Euro companies as possible to maximize the scope for kickbacks. Russian companies are not big into kickbacks. When BJP came to power, based on feedback from Defence Forces, they tried to back out 100% from the Rafale deal (even offering to move order to French submarines) but the French did not agree to it. So India / BJP was forced to go with the minimum number of units for the order and a better price without kickbacks (although some kickback for Rafale was already paid to Scamgress earlier.)
What Defence Updates is providing is an official explanation for its viewers.
