      Clint's Reptiles I have a leachie gecko and I’m wondering if I should use a heat source, my room is always around 18-20c but when I pick him up he is always quite cold.
      Do you need a humide hide with a leachie?

    • @ClintsReptiles
      @ClintsReptiles  5 лет назад +7

      Probably just a humid enclosure. You can use a heat pad on a thermostat, but excessive heart can be dangerous for them.

    I believe I know why they became rare. Pictus geckos are from Madagascar. According to the owner of the Texas Reptile Zoo, Madagascar stopped exporting reptiles several years back, and when they resumed *only* exported CITES-listed species. This means that non-CITES Madagascar species, which were mostly wild-caught before the export moratorium, are now only available captive-bred, and since the non-CITES species are generally the ones which were less in demand (even though they include some really cool species like Malagasy iguanids, zonosaurs, and Malagasy hognose snakes), there weren't a lot of people breeding them. And for most of these species, there probably *still* aren't many people breeding them, because most people, sadly, just won't pay CBB prices for a pictus gecko or a zonosaur.

    • @mefi9788
      @mefi9788 2 года назад +8

      Which I'd ironic because of how easy Clint said they are to breed.

    • @leam89
      @leam89 2 года назад +3

      I don't think this is the case because they have been bred for a long time and are so easy to breed. They likely just fell out of popularity which happens to some species

    6:15 they do climb suprisingly well when inclined to. My younger male even recently made it to the ceiling of his enclosure. Their pads are too small to walk up glass easily (except as babies, the babies can climb rediculously well) but there is a trick my geckos found out independently about climbing up in corners.

    Clint, excellent video! I'm a bit of a Paroedura picta fanatic, raising hundreds and hundreds and I felt you were right on with the information, especially your comments on over breeding them. Very good. A couple of points- when they grow back their tails, while they are not turnip shaped like leos, they are stubby and do not appear like their original tails. Also, they DO benefit from UV light (like all animals). While they are nocturnal (look at those eyes! :) they are crepuscular also and some UVB lightings is a benefit. But excellent info!!!

    I breed pictus geckos in Toronto Canada. I own some morphs, such as xanthic, anery, and a possible new one. Use a spoon to collect eggs. Very happy to see a great video about them. My big special male is 6.8 inch's. I have seen females climb glass. However I find only the young really climb.
    As far as I currently know, Madagascar has closed all flora and fuana exports. 90% of pictus on the market were wild caught.

    For anyone wondering they can and will climb glass, but they rarely do for some reason. I found that out the hard way in my early days of reptile keeping try finding a 4" gecko in a 5-bedroom house lol. they act very much like African fat tailed geckos in terms of being shy. I know what you mean about being hard to find I couldn't find a female to save my life my local pet store only ever got in males. all the online ones I found were unsexed babies. I'm thinking about getting back into them this video reminded me how much I enjoyed having one.

    I have a Male Pictus Gecko. I got him a year ago at a pet store that's about 45 minutes from my home. He was about 110 dollars Canadian (I live in Canada). I noticed him on the pet store's facebook page and they had him for awhile. I think because they've become so uncommon, people don't really know about them. Anyway, I love my little guy, but he's a bit skittish. Mind you, he was already an adult when I got him because the pet store had him for so long. His name is Pixel. They are such cute, neat little Geckos And I hope that more people will learn about them!

    Regarding their ability to climb, my pictus gecko was somewhat capable of climbing plastics like plexiglass or the plastic used to make critter keepers. But keep in mind that mine was a rescue and was smaller than most pictus geckos due to improper care before I had him.
    Edit: Also, if anyone in OH is looking for one of these guys, a local breeder called reptiles of eden sells them for about $200-300. I know that's pretty expensive, but she's the only breeder of these geckos that I know of in this state.

    I was actually looking for a pictus gecko for about 6 months, I found some at a new reptile store called Imperial Reptiles here in Orlando (they have another store in Miami). I went on their website and saw they FINALLY had 1 in stock so I jumped on the chance since I already had everything I needed for the little guy. He cost me I believe $85, adult male and they said he was a proven breeder. So maybe if I ever find a female I could give breeding them a shot if I feel comfortable with the opportunity. Overall they're really great little guys, mine is very skittish right now but I'm working with him. Such adorable little faces!

      @@thatrandomcat3479 They can live quite comfortably in a 10-15 gallon, they aren't very big at all. Of course if you wanted to you could always give them a larger tank like a 20-gal long :)

    You should test when your babies hatch if they can sit on water, and if they can you should continue until they cant anymore. :)

      Did you find them looking for pictus geckos on morph market? That is how I developed an acute NEED. I couldn't find a gliding video, and my life will not be complete until I have a gliding sized cage so I can see it.
      Their little webbed feets!

    Can you consider doing a video about african fat tailed geckos? I a huge AFT lover and I adore mine. I know their care is similar to leopard geckos and online lots of sites suggest keepers to refer to Leo's care sheets and add more humidity. While that is basically it, there are other difference I've found keeping mine. Since AFT's are just starting to grow in popularity it would be awesome to have information about AFT's their care and the differences between AFT care and Leo's. Regardless, thank you for making the great content, please don't stop! And thank you for reading this.

    Tip that my mom told me:
    "Don't use a lid, use a plastic and put it on top, to make it stay, use a rubber band, and use a pen for that thing to breathe"

    I was looking for my first lizard recently and turn out my local reptile shop had two of these guys. It was the first time I saw one of these (aside from this video) and of course I had to grab one of these guys and I love him to bits hahaha he is an awesome eater. We only have to work on handling ( he is a verry tiny and shy baby XD) but we will get there eventually haha

    Use a lid, I thought 1 of my 2 males got loose. I ended up rehoming my other 2 pictus geckos in the meantime. About a month later I decided to empty their cages to make room and there was my little male, hiding inside the bigger males enclosure. These guys may not be able to climb like cresties but they are very determined to try!
