Same here in Canada... you can't carry anything for the purpose of defending yourself against a person. They can get you with "intent to disrupt the public peace" and follow it up with a "weapons" charge... could spend a few years in prison for just wanting to protect yourself.

Consider also a photographer's monopod with a ball head on top. The head provides decent weight. The monopod may extend quite far, for needed height or reach. Some even come with a removable rubber foot that uncovers a metal spike which is used for stabilizing one's camera on certain kinds of ground. These can be obtained quite inexpensively from Amazon. They even have an Amazon Basics version that is especially inexpensive and suitable, sometimes sold as a 2-piece set. Just remember the ball head. Oh, and it nicely doubles as a walking stick.

I learned a long time ago that the lanyard/thong around the wrist can be a bad idea: if the stick or knife is jarred, you can lose control of it and it can swing around and hit you. A better idea is what we call the "billy club grip." Open your hand with your thumb up and loop the thong around your thumb ; let the thong hang across the back of your hand with the stick below. Roll your hand downward and grip the stick; then shorten the thong until it is snug but not tight and secure it at that length. This gives you a very strong grip on the stick, but if you need to release it quickly, just open your hand with your thumb pointed forward and it will slip off.

Be prepared to do damage and not fuck about worrying about legal consequences or fending people off without hurting them.

I appreciate the information about the stick (or cane) being carried in the hand opposite the weak or injured leg. While this is generally true, I have a condition where it sometimes have to use my cane on the same side as my weak knee. My worse knee was my left, four surgeries in twenty years left it weaker, unstable and would occasionally “dislocate” for a split second then pop back in. Normally I would use my cane in my right hand. However, after twenty years of picking up the slack, my right knee became weak, arthritic, with instable movements and worn cartilage. On the days where the right was weaker than the left I’d use my can on the left. Therein lies the rub. My left wrist has sever arthritis and carpel tunnel. When it flares up I have no choice but to use my case in my right hand. Of the right leg is weaker on any given day when my left hand is painful and near useless. It does look odd that my cane is on the “weak side.”
When hiking my walking stick is generally on the downhill side of the trail or when stepping off of logs, or protruding rocks, it is placed on the most solid ground, regardless of which hand or leg is best suited.

I live in Canada. This country has gone to hell in a hand basket, as for rights in Canada…… lol
When it comes to the rights to self defence, the only rights we have here are the right to lie down and die. Like our great king Justin says., we are not allowed to use weapons to defend ourselves, our lives, or the lives of our family
So, my wife and I own a property in the United States. in a year or so we are retiring moving away from Canada to the US
Yes, the US is not perfect But at least you have some rights one of those rights is the most fundamental of all rights to defend yourself and your family from injury or death This is a God-given, right This is not something that a government or a man says you may or may not do what is wrong with this world?
