Hearing Rick and Morty being referred to as "intellectual humor", even facetiously, unleashed something dark and primal in me that made my eyes snap up from what I was doing and pause only to linger on the "unsubscribe" button for a moment before I reawakened. Then I threw up a little then I went back to enjoying wholesome content. What a trip.
I started watching Rick and Morty right after Bojack Horseman, so I spent the first two seasons wondering what the point to Rick and Morty was. Eventually I just figured there was no point to it. Feels like a wasted opportunity.
@@Poldovico I know I'm going to sound like a useless shit for saying this, but rick and morty is a super obvious (to me) philosophical show. It's even a heavy-handed philosophical show that lovingly brow-beats your with philosophical conundrums in the same kind of way The Good Place does. It's intended and designed to pose philosophy questions, take several approaches to solving them, and usually also subverts them or shows the consequences of handling them the wrong way. The characters are not supposed to be good guys or heros, but dolls in a dollhouse, props to explore what happens when you choose wrong. Unlike other "bad people do bad things" shows, this one comes from a place where you can tell the philosophy angle is the backbone of the show. I KNOW it sounds like I'm making this up or doing the "you have to be IQ 33463524 to understand" meme, but I watched it after getting into philosophy and there's a sort of language of ideas there that to me obviously comes from academic philosophy sources. It's ultimately a show about morality and how complex and unachievable it can seem a lot of times, especially when you're forced to also deal with the instincts and needs of a human brain and body, and the demands and expectations of other people. I watched the whole thing before hearing about the fandom and I was devastated. I saw it being co-opted by nazi culture and I saw Roiland's disgust for them and how he literally had the characters beat up a nazi for no reason on the show just to emphasize his point (something I am a huge fan of and I wish more people did and weren't afraid of getting "too political" to trash on bigots). I saw so many people hyperfixate on pickle rick being a symbol of awesome where the episode he's actually from is one of the most powerful approaches to encouraging therapy and mental health that I've ever seen in a show outside of steven universe, and the entire POINT of the episode is that he invented pickle rick as DISTRACTION TO AVOID TALKING ABOUT DEEP AND IMPORTANT TOPICS and the irony blasts me in the balls every waking moment of my life /hj I didn't super enjoy the show, I mostly watched it like a train wreck, not because the writing's bad, it's very good, but just because I'm hoping and begging for the characters to get better instead of worse. They really try and go back and forth but ultimately the show isn't about them, it's about white middle class americans and culturally similar demographics, and the rules they live under and goals they aspire to. In a way it's a character driven show, but not driven by the main cast, but collectively by all social interactions in their entire universe. Multiverse, even. It's a show about society and people. Calling it related to Bojack is very apt. It's a dark adult cartoon that offers more than just fratboy slapstick. I would say the biggest difference is just that R&M is more "zoomed out" and less specific, or rather, each episode is its own world and the show is an anthology, meanwhile Bojack is about taking a microscope to a single life and following its spirals of nuance and detail. Rick and Morty is a weird one for me because the show is definitely worth something but the fandom enjoys avoiding its depths. Sometimes out of ignorance, sure, but even a lot of the time very purposefully. It's like people love not listening. Or maybe people just like to watch aliens barfing in acid trip colors and don't actually watch the show for the plot or dialogue at all. That's fair too. The animation is vibrant and wild and it has a satisfying snappiness to it. If someone wanted to zone out to it I can see how that would be appealing. But it still pains me because I don't think Roiland gave it depth so that some people could pat themselves on the back for solving the secret code and other people could totally miss it. I think he gave it depth because he wanted to draw people in enough to get their attention about stuff he thinks is important. It seems like a really personal show that comes from places of hurt and jaded mindset and internal struggle. The alcoholism, the feelings of being lost and neglected, being in an unsatisfying career, being unappreciated by your family, and having to handle a world where everyone always seems to be several steps ahead of you but still totally unequipped to properly build the structures that everyone else has to deal with? None of that is played for laughs. The jokes are the things in between, the little moments of realizing how absurd everything has become. The real show is just demonstrations of real problems that real people are facing. When I compared it to steven universe I think maybe that came across as pretty silly but it's a comparison I stand by. Both shows seem to be from the perspective of someone who is struggling and trying to express that struggle to other people... The difference being that SU is like a person who has started to go to therapy and really benefit from it and is trying to help other people despite not being fully healed themselves... Whereas R&M is like someone who knows they need help but can't bring themselves to ask for it yet and just wants to be understood. I mean. Am I anthropomorphizing entire series? Yes. Welp. I don't know how to end this. Have a good day!
@@Queer_Nerd_For_Human_Justice See, to me it looks like it should be deep, but when I take some time to think about it and interrogate that depth, invariably I come up empty handed. Maybe I just don't resonate with the "anthology" approach, it scratches the surface of so many things, but two seasons in I was bored of waiting for it to finally dive into something. Ironically, that approach is why I am less thrilled about the "beat up nazis" approach. Not due to approving of them in any way, but rather because I think those kinds of awful, awful ideologies ultimately stem from pain and loneliness. You can't give them a centimeter in terms of the stuff they actually ask for, but you're not going to solve them as a problem until you understand them as people and dig them out of the psychological holes they were dragged into. It's a superficial solution to a deep problem, and unsurprisingly it's more likely to make things worse than better.
I love The Mummy. I also had a crush on both of them. "What's a place like me doing in a girl like this?!" Also agree with Princess Bride and Stardust. Stardust is a great book too, I recommend it. My favourite Neil Gaiman book is Neverwhere. He is a brilliant writer.

i dont know if its generational or maybe cultural (like maybe millenials had more of an expectation of going straight to independence once theyd finished studying, or it might be a u.s. thing) but your parents are not Generous for letting you stay with them after youve graduated or are legally an adult,, thats their duty as your parents,, i think i understand why she phrased it like that but i think that way of speaking just leads into the mindset that we should venerate anyone who'd house us for free, even our own direct family, and no, you are 24, you are in a capitalist hellscape, stay with your parents as long as you can because independence is, for most of us, unsustainable this is not a criticism of julia i just know sometimes people can take that type of thing very personally and apply it to themselves and it just leads to guilt
