Yeah, actually his analysis is the sole proof we need that humbly having awe of God is the sole source of *hatred of God*; and no, this's not motivated by pride at all, that trait would lead to discipleship, this's the fruit of how he correctly lays out what the proper response to God is: fear of God; and that alone leads man to *hate God AS God is God and therefore the sole proper response ever is one of unlimited hatred of the superior*, namely and especially God Himself- not motivated at all by envy of the divine, but by humbling oneself before HIm.
In short, any theologian is a fully incompetent idiot and/or a simple heretic: as they portray God as someone to be hated solely for being in any way an object of sheer terror, not in any way devotion at all, but by humbling oneself to Him: hatred of Him that will never ever cease nor be overturned as it comes solely out of His directives and obedience thereto.

Yeah, if he laid out the god you should worship: you're clearly an idolaterer: as that kind of a "god" is not in any way trustworthy, but is certain to abuse you: due to His superior status, if not mandating being an object of sheer terror, not charity at all- and *that* comes not out of envy of the divine, but out of sheer humility before Him.
Jesus is The Way The Truth and The Life His whole life on earth was in divine service to Our Father in heaven. At the Transfiguration his divinity was gloriously revealed to us. His compassion and tender care for us is amazing while we still were and are sinners. He went about healing and loving and protecting. The bishop provides a beautiful recitation of the Christ story as embraced by those who choose to follow the Christian tradition. Those who have chosen other traditions have different perspectives that are also quite compelling. I love them all. In the end, we must choose our own path to enlightenment because matters of faith are never accompanied by proof that leads to certainty. (Faith and proof are non-intersecting circles on a Venn diagram.) As a quick criticism: “either he’s God or he’s a bad man” falsely forces a binary on the decision tree. A third branch, which should always be included when applying logical treatments to matters of faith, is we don’t know or understand.
As for me, I will follow Jesus.
What does this mean? What will you do? What will you change about yourself or your behaviour?

What I find interesting is that the language used in the scriptures, Torah, gospels Quran etc is complex and anecdotal and open to many interpretations. Indeed, they are also referred to parables. Thus theologians from the three major monotheistic religions come up with different interpretations to accommodate their basic ideology. Whether God did give Moses the Ten Commandments they are a good set of rules to abide by and to be a good person here on earth.
The Christian gospel is clearly that you don’t earn your way into heaven by being good and following the rules. That is the pharisaical pattern that Christ condemned so clearly. Jesus said “ Follow me and believe in me”
@@johnsteichen5239 yes, I know. My initial comments were directed at the different interpretations of the scriptures by the principal three monotheistic religions. They each profess salvation is achieved by their beliefs. My sequitur of adherence to the 10 commandments being a good template to live by is a direct reference to this life rather than any future spiritual life after death.
There is no list of 10 Commandments in the Bible.
There are references to 13 in Exodus and a list of 19 in Deuteronomy. By Hebrew tradition these are amalgamated and redacted to create list of 10. But that is in a non-canonical Hebrew texts. The Hebrew Bible has over 600 commandments: most of which are ignored by the church as irrelevant. A few such as one that endorse slavery, killing women and children, ripping unborn from mothers womb are repudiated by the church. There are varying interpretation and clarification of these Commandant by different faith communions too.
As N T Write advises Christians often don't like it when he tells them what is in the Bible.

I think Bishop Barron is as good as it gets in the Catholic tradition and broader Christianity. Lots of respect, really. Having said that, and going to the core of what he is saying here, it just doesn’t make sense to me to “decide” whether Jesus was A or B. He was who he was. A man’s opinion or belief about him two thousand years later doesn’t affect reality, whatever it is. It will affect himself but it is not knowledge, it’s (at best) an informed guess. I just don’t see the moral value of guessing or having an strong opinion about it. We just don’t know. Can’t base my life on a guess about an historical person or event. It’s like gambling. There must be another way. That’s why I prefer natural theology and the wisdom traditions. Reason and experience seem to me to be trustworthy enough to walk the path of spirituality. They don’t require believing in something we just do not know and, probably, cannot know. Maybe actual knowledge will develop into deep faith but sheer belief as a kick starter or as the primordial engine to one’s spirituality is… to much to ask imo. I mean, people will believe in the measure of their need (I need too, I’m not judging) but wouldn’t it be just better to actually know? Is it not a reasonable thing to aspire to?
Interesting, and I quasi understand where you're coming from. Perhaps, a distinction that could be made, is it isn't necessarily about an argument put forth by Bishop Barron. The crux of the issue is that Jesus demands that you make the choice. If Jesus is not God, He's a lunatic. If He is God, what He said and commanded must be followed. It doesn't matter which era one finds him/herself.
I think through natural theology one can examine and make judgement on the new world Jesus is revealing.
But also notice how faith is valued in this Way. Now we don't want it to be subrational but instead this hints that at the edge of our abilities we do have to make a leap of faith. How someone makes that leap is up to them but I think it can be seen in reality just how powerful and necessary faith is to human flourishing. Which leads me to believe faith plays a role in how our spirits thrive and are saved.
That’s not what the faith asks. You’re asked to walk not crush yourself into an affected faith. Go to mass, say your prayers, you will meet God and speculation will cease

I know you’re making a logical argument. But, as a practical matter, this only holds up if Jesus actually made the claim and the record of that claim is accurate. If, as the historical record suggests, the claim to divinity was made at an Ecumenical Council years later, the good bishop’s argument becomes moot. Jesus didn’t make the claim, therefore it can’t be evidence that he is a bad man. Quick note: Bible verses that the church has interpreted as Jesus’s claims to divinity are vague at best. Please, can we at least agree that the doctrine of divinity (and the Trinity for that matter) was established by the church centuries later? Our faith will be strengthened when we choose to acknowledge history rather than reject it because it doesn’t validate our beliefs.

If the hypostatic union is correct, and there is no division between the human nature and divine nature in Christ, then he should have known the time of his return, which he said he didn't know. But Scripture shows us he was indeed God in the flesh, the Logos (Word) made into a man. But "being found in the form of a man" meant he no longer had his miraculous attributes of deity. In fact, Jesus states that his miracles were from the Father, who was in him and he in the Father. That would mean he still had the spiritual identity as the Word of God, but now made a man, doing miracles by the Holy Spirit, the Father dwelling in him. So he was and always is divinity. But he did not have the miraculous attributes of his own deity. This is also how he grew in wisdom.
Everyone who has a Bible and is willing to read in it will learn who Jesus is.

The Holy Bible, the source of Bishop Barron, is freely available in either printed or online form. To explain the Bible should be the core of the Roman Catholic Church instead of dwelling in their 'own' interpretations, rites, standards, and riches.
Interesting that in the Paulian Epistles there is no mention of Jesus' mission in Galilee, his family, diciples or places names. Paul does assert he received the Eucharist by revalation directly from Jesus. The Gospel of Mark makes no mention of Jesus birth: Mark 4,5 are formulated with Jesus having an eventful crossing of the sea, preaching and miracles: 3 times. The Gospels draw on the Hebrew Bible for the words attributed to Jesus. Eg, Sermon on Mount and Deuteronomy. Luke has Lazarus as a character in a parable, with John having Lazarus as the disciple most loved and immortal. There is no reference to Jesus in any chronicle of the era. We do though have Historical accounts that are at best misrepresented and likely changed by churches in latter era to make out they referred to Jesus. The Gospels in original Greek say Jesus to say Jesus was crucified: this was introduced in the Latin translation.
There is much more that throughs doubt on a historical Jesus, and the possibility that Jesus was a Celestial being in the Hebrew tradition.
I assume Bishop Barron knows all this better than most.

Why do Christians lie in the defence of their Faith?
Yep, all of what you wrote is true. And you’re just getting warmed up. Contrary to what the good Bishop said, Jesus never declared himself to be God. He made several statements that can be stretched to fit that belief. Ecumenical councils took it across the finish line centuries later. There are several other church doctrines that were given the same treatment. Mary, whose place in the Catholic church is prominent and transactional, was initially just a Jewish woman who God chose as a vessel for the incarceration. She is mostly mentioned in Luke, briefly mentioned in Acts, then practically disappears in the epistles written by those who knew her best. That was all changed in Ephesus in 431 CE when she was declared Theotokos. (I’ll skip the reasons why this happened. I’ll also skip the history that led to the Trinity.) In the end, religions are humankind’s way of explaining what they intuitively feel: we are here, we have consciousness, the universe exists, and there must be a reason for it all. From that place in the human spirit springs many religions that serve as a language that attempts to express the inexpressible. Religions give people hope, and I can’t fault them for adopting simple explanations for the mysteries of life.
It takes a conscience decision to #1 disregard all the other gods as fake and #2 believe the Jesus story completely based on bad evidence. Priests know this and play on your decision to believe for no other reason than to win your loyalty and your cash. That is the truth about Jesus.
I understand what you’re saying, but I’m less cynical about the church’s motive. It was a Jesuit who implored me to find god in all things. Yes, a Catholic priest told me to look other places in addition to, not instead of, the church to seek enlightenment.
Yeah, based on his rightful layout of Christ's personality in the teachings of the Church He Himself set up: He is an object of not goodness nor devotion but an object of *terror* and thus the rightful response to God is hatred of the divine due to humbling oneself before that monstrosity we call "God"... nobody could ever worship that kind of a deity Who Himself is not domesticated and thus in any capacity safe to approach: as He will abuse you- that's certain, due to Him being classified, correctly, as an object of terror and thus the sole proper response to the deity is hatred thereof coming not out of pride at all, but out of sheer humility and the rightful awe of God.
"But I say!" The LIVING WORD CHRIST in us has authority over the written word. In Jesus's time the Hebrew scriptures, in our time the Bible. Solar Scriptura has been the reason for so little transformation of the world. Christian religion and morality yes, but no realisation of who we truly are. The oneness of our humanity and divinity.

I do believe that a deep affection for the Scripture has changed society. I grew up evangelical and I can testify to that the fact that sola scriptura and the belief there in led people to seek after the Truth better than anything else. However, it’s impossible to separate the Scriptures from tradition. Jesus said seek and you shall find (mt. 7) and the Bible declares the truth will set you free (Jn 8:32). Truth is objective over our subjective experience. I believe, it betters our subjective truth. Objective Truth isn’t hard but liberating. It’s the very thing so many other religion try to obtain in subjective religious adherence.
Only God can calm the seas

Only God can walk on water
Jesus did all of these and as a first century Jew they knew that

Why do they always portray him as being a white man in the images?
Because the dominant form of the Christian church, though beginning in the Middle East (Israel spreading to Syria and Arab countries) later nestled in Europe around the time when art began to really take off historically, with it's its heights beginning in the renaissance. By then, with the advent of printing press and books/illuminated manuscripts etc., the image of a white Christ was everywhere due to master painters being from northern and Southern Europe, and the Arab/middle-eastern world being largely Islamic. That was the foundation, artistically, for what the world has come to know now. Though of course, the reality was most likely far, far different. I think that if we want to get an image of what Jesus most likely looked like, we can start with taking a look at the neighbors of Israel today -- people who were never exiled by ancient Assyria and Neo-Babylon over 2500 years ago, mixing with Europeans in their travels to find a new home.
Christianity took off with the gentiles of the Roman Empire who now days are referred to as white. In Europe, there weren't any reference points for Semitic appearance. I live in Africa and there are plenty of depictions of Jesus and Mary as black here. Mary even appeared to children in Rwanda in the 1980s as ethnically black.
They don’t. The historical art record includes countless examples of Jesus as a member of local societies. Asian, African, South America, they’re all there. My favorites are icons created in the Horn of Africa. Everyone wants to believe Jesus is “one of us.” You’re likely only seeing art created in western settings.
Ah. The gospels. Those 4 stories of jesus, with not a lot of variation in their stories. We have no way of verifying the words spoken by jesus and the claims of divinity are just that. Claims. You need to provide the evidence for anything divine, supernatural paranormal and so on. The gospels are the claims. Now the work begins by providing independent verification that jesus was in fact divine, whatever that is. The gospels were intended for believers and faithful followers. It was also intended for new recruits to the faith.
The irony is Jesus never made those claims. One minor quibble: faith is never derived from evidence. Knowledge comes from evidence. Faith is belief without evidence. Accordingly, all religions are, by definition, matters of faith because none are supported by evidence.

I don't think Christianity can capture the real Jesus, doctrinally or even biblically. The best christologists have to rely on germane to Jesus' historical identity is the conceptualizations and constructs of historians, theologians, and other experts . The gospel is so deeply embedded in the Catholic Church that I had to discover it in the evangelical/protestant tradition. Paul of Tarsus preached it quite clearly 2000 yrs ago. I had 20 years of Catholic education. 20 years. And this catholic priest explains it in 6 minutes. He must have discovered it in a Lutheran or Baptist church. 😂

The Second Vatican Council taught doctrines which had been already condemned by the Church, and enacted disciplines which are contrary to the Church's teaching and constant practice.
2. What doctrines did it teach which were already condemned?
There are four major errors concerning: (1) the unity of the Church; (2) ecumenism; (3) religious liberty; (4) collegiality.
3. What false doctrine does it teach concerning the unity of the Church?
Vatican II teaches heresy concerning the unity of the Church, namely that the Church of Christ is not exclusively identified with the Catholic Church, but merely subsists in it. This heretical doctrine is contained principally in Lumen Gentium, and its heretical meaning is confirmed in statements of Paul VI and his successors, particularly in the 1983 Code of Canon Law, in the 1992 Statement concerning Church and Communion, and in the Ecumenical Directory.
It is contrary to the teaching of the Catholic Church, contained principally in Satis Cognitum of Pope Leo XIII, Mortalium Animos of Pope Pius XI, Mystici Corporis of Pope Pius XII, and in the condemnations of the "Branch Theory" made by the Holy Office under Pope Pius IX.

Yes, definitely a logical possibility. I think the good bishop’s bifurcated decision tree (god or bad man) assumes that possibility away. He also assumes Jesus made the claim to begin with. A lot of logical leaps are required to validate matters of faith.
1. Did Jesus exist? If he didn't, how do you explain all the Jesus-believing communities that sprang up in the Galilee in the middle of the first century?
2. Why do people thing Jesus was a god? They didn't at first. The people who knew him and were devoted to him thought he was their long-awaited messiah. No one thought he was a divine being. That idea arose decades after he had been killed in 30 CE.
3. What was a messiah thought to be 2,000 years ago? A man descended from the line of David and had been selected by Yahweh to sweep away Satan and all evil from the world, set up a new Garden of Eden for the righteous, and rule the world for 1,000 years as the King of Israel.
4. Did other people claim to be the messiah? Yes, plenty. And those who were caught doing it were also crucified.
5. Why did Rome crucify the messiahs? Only the Emperor or the Roman Senate appointed kings within their great empire. Claiming you were the King of Israel was about as serious a crime as you could commit in those days.
6. But why not just chop their heads off? Crucifixion had two features that made it a good execution method. First, it was an extraordinarily painful and drawn-out way to die. No one wanted that. Second, the victim became a very public advertisement. The executioners didn't remove the body once it had died. They left it up there until it fell apart.
Jesus wasn't the messiah. He just thought he was. A gigantic religion sprouted up on the basis of wishful thinking.
Waste of time talking about a human god, if there's a human god then there has to be an elephant God, if there's a Jewish God then there has to be a different God in each country.

Functionally, it works much better as a work of fiction that imparts life lessons, but if you believe it literally it becomes deeply immoral. It is symbolic, not literal in its meaning. In fact, the literal can never have meaning because facts are completely empty, it is only inside our selves that we fins meaning, not outside or in stories.
