    I couldn't have both gpigs and bunnies....I'd die of cuteness overload.

  • @raemouse
    @raemouse 7 лет назад +213

    My rabbit and guinea pig were incredibly close. The bunny would put her head down and the piggy would stand on her, they'd wait for each other to do this! They also groomed each other! We did have a little trouble introducing them because we brought the bunny home first but they were very happy together very early on. My piggy was very upset and depressed after her bunny friend died and she hasn't accepted a piggy companion since so she lives alone very happily.
    We did A LOT of research before deciding on a bunny and a guinea pig so we did consider all the risks. We decided if it didn't go well, we would adopt new companions for both as we were planning on adopting more animals anyway. I don't think I'd make the same decision again anyway but this video really helped me see some opinions we didn't read before getting our animals. We were not first time bunny and guinea pig owners either so we didn't go in completely blind and ignorant...
    One point that really made me think was that they wouldn't understand each other. Particularly through piggy noises. However I think after living together for some time, our two definitely seemed to communicate somehow. They spent most of their time together and even though our bunny was very grumpy with us, she was incredibly calm and gentle with the piggy. They were a gorgeous pair and both me and my piggy miss our bunny so much...

    Just before people mention borditella. Remember if is airborne, she had cats and dogs to and nobody ever said anything. So why now ? Dogs and cats carry borditella she has let jasper meet them. Nobody said anything. It is airborne they have a chance of getting it weather they are housed together or not. So letting her bunnies and piggies meet on a couple of occasions will not increase their chance of getting borditella. I am against rabbits meeting piggies but I really don't thing people should be saying about the Bactria.

    For me the answer to having gp and rabbits together is a straight no! I know people that have had rabbits and guinea pigs in the same room (not together together, but in the same room) where the guinea pigs died because of Bordetella and the rabbits where both perfectly healty and the guinea pigs was too, this was thoroughly examined by the vet so I believe you can be very unlucky and this can happen with others too so it is not worth taking that risk if you love your pets especially your guinea pigs in this case. And the other reasons is to what you mention -that rabbits can harm a guinea pig (even so bad that the guinea pig may loose his life) without meaning it. And they do not understand each other so they don't get the proper interaction they need with an other conspecific.

    This bacteria very very rarely affects a household of both guinea pigs and rabbits for the simple reason thats its a bacteria which the guinea pigs immune defence systems reject. They have to be cold, fragile of health or under the age of 2 weeks if it should cause respiratory issues for them. And more often than not the respiratory symptoms will be minor while the owner will mostly notice loose bodily waste and increased thirst. IT is the same principle as with the few different bacteria strands that can affect humans from cats and dogs - its not something to worry about and although there is a huge number of people living with these pets, there are close to no cases per year of these illnesses.

      Also the guinea pigs skulls are so dense in bone structure and bone density that a rabbit can't fracture it from a hind leg kick. They can give them a sore side or shortly sore spot but thats it. The main "risk" is if the rabbits chase the guinea pigs as the guinea pigs often will not turn around and stand their ground, but instead let be chased around and they can be very fragile towards stress which is also one of the main health risks for guinea pigs second after old age. They can't cope with stress. But as long as they sniff the rabbits or put their noses into the rabbits fur and the rabbits don't run around and affect the pigs to run around as well or make the pigs run away from them, they should be fine.

      Thanks for sharing and clearing that up. It makes perfect sense what you are saying. The UK/US sites do not provide enough information about the bacteria, but what you wrote is very easy to understand and now it all makes sense :)

    Bordetella can be passed from rabbits to guinea pigs, which is deadly. So regardless of diet, space, companionship, friendship, communication etc - they should NEVER be housed together and should be kept completely separate.

    • @ErinsArk
      @ErinsArk  8 лет назад +1

      Yes, I am aware of bordetella and I did mention that in the video. The risk is low in healthy animals - only when their immune system is weakened by stress or illness would they pick up something like that. Otherwise it is unlikely to pass from one to the other.

    I ended up inheriting a lone guinea pig. I let him roam in the garden with my shihtzus. The shihtzus are very placid and calm natured. They get on well and often sit next to him. Once a fox came for my guinea pig and the shihtzus defended him by barking to spook the fox away.

    Great video Erin!!! Bigwig looks adorable in this video!!! I still can't get over how cute he is! Anyway, this video was so informational for people who want to keep rabbits and Guinea pig together. Personally I would not let my Guinea pigs and bunnies meet but we have a new set up for the bunnies and piggies which is a lot like yours. So I am sure it will happen soon by accident! How is Multy doing??? I hope she gets better soon do they still think it is a fungal infection? I am about to go to ikea ( the one in birdstall) to pick up and detolf for Micky (my hamster) he lived in the alaxander cage (the one you have I think but he is super active so I decided to upgrade. Any I hope you have a good day. - Erin hehe we have the same name.

    Rabbits have very strong back legs. When rabbits fight with each other, they kick. If a rabbit were to kick a Guinea pig it could seriously injure them and even kill them.
    I've also heard that both animals give off dander that may irritate the other but, I never read up on it so don't quote me.

    For those in the comment section, do you think that for a period of a month or even sooner, it'd be alright to house a Rabbit and Guinea pig in the same cage/area? The rabbit we're getting lived with a different guinea pig in a cage for two weeks, so, I was wondering if it'd perhaps change anything, although, the guinea pig hasn't lived with a rabbit. The rabbits are fairly small, Polish Rabbits and I'm getting one today, along with a guinea pig. The reason I ask this is due to the fact that we live a few cities away, so, we don't have the space to haul around two cages. I'd like to hear everyone's opinion on this, please and thanks!

      I would exercise extreme caution. Just because a rabbit has excepted a guinea pig doesn't mean they except this new guinea pig.
      Also rabbits can hide symptoms of certain diseases that they can be carriers for that will kill guinea pigs.
      Always get your rabbits tested for Bordetella bronchiseptica and Pasteurella before getting them anywhere near a guinea pig

    I love seeing innocent animals being cute, my bunny died very recently, and he reminds me so much of him (And he was only about three months old), but God was/is with me every step of the way, I can’t imagine my life without God, He has brought me so much joy and relief I have to share this, : Will you go to Heaven when you die? Here’s a quick test: Have you ever lied, stolen, or used God’s name in vain? Jesus said, “Whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” If you have done these things, God sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer at heart, and the Bible warns that one day God will punish you in a terrible place called Hell. But God is not willing that any should perish. Sinners broke God’s Law and Jesus paid their fine. This means that God can legally dismiss their case: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Then Jesus rose from the dead, defeating death. Today, repent (turn away from sin) and trust Jesus, and God will give you eternal life as a free gift. Then read the Bible daily and obey it. God will never fail you.

    I HOPE YOU READ THIS:
    First off, I love your channel and I always watch your guinea pig videos, inspiring and adorable lol. I have a problem... I heard you adopted some of your guinea pigs. I bought my guinea pigs when I was younger because I didn't think I'd be moving... And now I've moved into a different house that's very small and the landlord HATES them and calls them "rats"... It makes me sad because before I moved they had been from house to house for family to care for them when I was first in the process of moving. Now that I have them, they're very skiddish, they don't know their tricks anymore... And they're in the dark in my basement 24/7... I'm not even aloud to have them where I'm staying. They're my little babies and it kills me that I have to give them away... The only person I would ever give them to or ever trust them with is you. I've watched your videos and ik you'd be amazing. I'd ship them to you and they will be free, if you're interested please comment me back and I can give you my email so we can talk more about it and I'll send you pictures of them. Both of them are colors you don't have 😊

    Great video! I have two guinea pigs called Cocoa and Fudge. I had two rabbits Called Lulu and Rosie but sadly Rosie died due to Snuffles at the age of one. I go to school and I go on holidays for two weeks twice a year and I do worry about my bun being lonely. She has my brother who looks after her but she is quite weary of different people and sometimes she scratches people when she doesn’t know them. Because of this I would like to put my guinea pigs and rabbit together but all three off them do get territorial at some points but not badly! Just a little grunt here and there! How would I bond them? I was thinking for a few weeks let them sniff each other a few times a day and then put Cocoa on my lap and let Lulu sniff her a few times a day for a few weeks and do the same with Lulu and Fudge. Then put them in an area together, try it in Lulu’s cage etc! Would this work?

    this video came with two kinds of comments, from people who know a lot about guinea pigs and say you should not keep them together with rabbits, and people who ask a little bit stupid questions and they need to be teached clearly. Not like: if I were you i probably wouldn't do it bc there are some risks, but like: just don't put them together!!!! I understand what you mean and you only wanted to try for the experience, and help people, but please be clear about it ok? That will help avoid comments like this, I'm sorry😋 I love your channel and you are the best, but please be clear, no hate btw!❤️I love the editing of this video!!

    First of all, sorry for my english, I'm german. I got my first piggie when i was 6. My parents gave it to me for my birthday and I was the happiest child alive. Some days later we had to bring him to the vet and let him die because he was very very sick. I didnt understood it, cause I didnt knew what happened right there. This little boy was just like 2 months old. When we drove back to the animal "shop" where my parents got him, we saw that they hold bunnys and piggies in one small cage. I started crying when i saw this cause all of them were sick, couldnt breathe and stuff. Now i know that i will never bring bunnys and pigs together, and maybe some of you think about my storie when you try to.

    my rabbit hates other rabbits we have had many friends for him but he rejected them all 😱however my guinea pigs have half a shed and the rabbit has the other half and they have a barred devider and they love to sit and each side and see each other but I would never let them share the full shed as I wouldn't want to risk it . Before we had a shed the rabbit escaped his hutch ( why we have a shed) and we found him playing with the dogs ! The dogs are very laid back and they where just lay in the ssun togheter wich I found very cute but I soon put him back in his hutch . The point I'm tr to make is that my rabbit hates other rabbits but enjoys the company on dogs and guinea pigs 😂

    Hi erin, we have decided not to get Sizzles neutered as we have herd of the risks and I am just not taking any. That does mean that we wont be getting three more. It would not be fair anyway as the other two are in smaller runs (still big) and they would jealous of sizzles as for 1 he has a huge cage and for 2 he has 3 women to himself. They can still speak to one another and interact so it's not like they are completely alone. As for my rabbit, he is alone and used to have friends but they sadly passed away. He needs friends more than they do! Same for my lone hen, she needs friends so we have decided that instead of getting 3 more guinea pigs, we will still get three animals but instead we will get 2 more chickens and 1 more rabbit so that everybody has someone of their own kind to talk to. What do you think?😘💕
