  • Did you know I've made over 800+ other videos on RUclips? Hit that SUBSCRIBE button and watch another Barnacules Nerdgasm video right after this one! 🍿 I contacted Rad Power Bikes to ask if they would let me review one of their RadRover E-Bikes after giving up on conventional bikes since I'm so out of shape. After the review they gave me one to take home and I've ridden it every day since. I can honestly say this bike has got me riding again after all but giving up. I let my wife ride it and she fell in love and I will be picking up a second bike in the next few weeks for her so we can ride together with our son. Not often does a product I review actually heavily impact my life but this one certainly did getting me active again!

    I can see that many people are missing the point. Stop assuming that you don't have to pedal this bike or you're not going to lose any weight or gain fitness riding it. I'm speaking from experience here that when you go up hill's, etc the assist allows you to still put down a lot of your own power but keep moving forward. I can't do that on my regular bike so I don't even try or do it at all. So the logic that this bike won't help you regain fitness is flawed. The fact is anything that gets you outside and moving is a good thing including an e-bike and ultimately you still pedal but it's more like a gym fitness bike where you can level out the hills and make things a little easier so you can keep going and you can find your limits but also make it more then 1 city block before dying and turning back. I hope that some of you are just trolling when you think this bike is just for lazy people, I find it to be SO MUCH MORE then that and a really option for people that stopped riding because they are so out of shape like myself.

      +Takumi Fujiwara You don't understand do you? The motors are the difference between uphill being terrible and being completely impossible. I have a $1700 Bianchi road bike that I can't get over some hills, some assistance would be great

      +Barnacules Nerdgasm I have always loved the idea of electric bikes and now that they almost all have pedal assist instead of just a throttle its that much better. Just wish they would improve the range a bit more and bring the cost down a bit more. As a teen I would ride 50-75 mile days on my mountain bike. Would love to do that again but after a few injuries it just cant happen. Now if they could make an E bike under $1000 with a range of say 75 miles on a good assist setting that would be awesome.
      Would love to see more follow ups on your bike.

    I now have 160 miles on the bike and it's still going great, taking it into the shop today to get some fenders installed on those giant tires for mud riding and a cell phone mount. These things are awesome!

      Were you able to hack it to go any faster and hose it down on those muddy rides? haha.. I'm really wanting an ebike but concerned with how they handle the elements including snow and rain.

    • @Barnacules

      People will complain about anything and everything. The truth is this bike gets you out and riding again when you're feeling run down and like you don't have the energy. It gives you the push and kick you need when you need it so you don't have anxiety you won't make it back. $1500 is a small price to pay for confidence!

    I was really skeptical about purchasing the Radwagon before seeing this. I'm a heavyset guy myself and trying to find a good way to just get back out there, but I wasn't really sure if it would handle someone my size (approx 300+lbs). Seeing this review has not only assuaged my doubts, but has solidified my decision to purchase it. Hopefully this will be a good baby step to a more healthy life. Best of luck man, and my deepest thanks.

    Great and fun video, Jerry. Found it from an ebike blog site (EBR Forum). I've been riding bicycles since I got my first road bike in 1984. Then moved on to mountain bikes which I loved because I started riding trails and on the street they feel sturdier and can ride through sand piles on the beach strand where I live without any problems. Ebikes are utterly AWESOME, got mine about 4 months ago. The feeling is as you described in the video...you get the feeling of strength and power. I haven't used the throttle yet, I love to peddle. But I'll try it sometime soon. I tell ya, while I'm riding my bike (it's an emotion bike) I still find myself smiling bcuz it's so much fun. I describe the feeling like this...ebikes give you all the fun of bicycle riding without any of the negatives like wind, hills, distance. I ride 33 miles without breaking a sweat and I'm peddling the whole time.
    Your video has me thinking I want one of these RadRovers, too, just to be able to ride on the sand (probably during the winter when the crowds go home bcuz ya don't want to start the fight with sunbathers and riders and city law folks! LOL).
    Oh and the exercise question? I read one study that indicated that you're getting about 20% less exercise on an ebike vs. a regular bike. Not bad and it's always better to be outside and moving! Also, my personal experience is this...the first month I rode my ebike, around 70-90 miles/week, I lost 12 lbs. (I know you other gals will love that!). I didn't need to lose the weight as I'm slim already, but it just fell off and I'm sure it's bcuz of the riding I'm doing. These ebikes GET YOU OFF THE COUCH THEY ARE SO MUCH FUN. Riding to work? Piece of cake since it's only 6.1 miles from my home! Test one out at a local retailer, that's what I did and fell in love.

    ok people I'm an avid cyclist since I was 7 years old and ride road downhill cross country. and if you think that this is going to take away from getting exercise for people that have a lot to overcome in terms of weight your sadly wrong this is going to encourage them to ride more without killing them.

    Great video. I didn't intend on watching it all but I did thanks to your excitement and humor shown on the video.
    I've been riding my two DIY 1000W 28mph e-bikes over the past 6 years. I have to say, after 6 years, I still feel *exactly* the excitement mentioned in this video! Shortly after experiencing my first e-bike, I built a second identical one. I knew the only thing more fun than riding an electric bike is to have another person riding with you on a second electric bike! :-)
    Just like the video shows, the smooth quiet ride that an electric bike provides is sooo much fun and is so very useful for quick runs to the grocery, convenience stores, lunch, etc. You would feel guilty turning on a combustion engine car for that -- not to mention the hassle of finding parking. Even fun to go farther for doctor's appointments and the like.
    Another thing is it extra fun (not shown in the video) are those hot days where people even struggle walking through the heat on the sidewalks. But an e-bike rider can breeze by on the roadway -- never ride on sidewalks fast. The effortless fast speed with the e-bike gives you your own air conditioning even in the hot sun! This video would look even more fun in the California sunshine! Imagine a scenario like the Fleet Week Navy airshow in SF with roadways so jammed you can't really drive anywhere. But the e-bike easily weaves through all of that for miles and miles of cool riding.

    I am also working on getting back into shape and working on losing weight. Instead of an electric assist, I went with a recumbent trike (a Sun Seeker T3 CX tadpole). My body has been screaming to get back on a bike and go, but I can't handle normal saddles. The electric assist, for me, will come later on if I choose to get it :) Glad to see that you're enjoying the bike and working on getting back into it! Keep it up, man!

    This was a great video,as someone who has always cycled to work on a unpowered bicycle,this really appeals to me.I am 48 now and I do a very physically demanding job.After a full week I am exhausted,so much so I have very little energy left do anything at the weekend.I would love to be able to go out cycling at the weekend,but I have to give my body the rest,so one of these would be great.I think even my girlfriend might come out on a ride with me on one of these.You seemed to have a great time on it.And could I just say to the people saying just get a motorbike,you totally do not understand the difference.These bikes are for people that just want to get outside for a few hours and get some fresh air.Motorbikes are for traveling fast over long distances.

    This bike is awesome! I lost 30 lbs over a 2 month period (controlled diet as well). It is still a great work out! I just can go longer because of the pedal assist. It is a really cool invention. A total game changer. However, I will say for me it is heavy and hard to turn narrow corners especially off roading. I live in the country so I ride it on country roads and light off road riding.

    10 months and 1870 miles on my Rover. While every bike has positives and negatives..I found the perfect balance of quality, price, and fun in this Rover. It fits MY riding needs perfectly. The company stands behind their product. I had a problem with the motor..and with a phone call and a video submitted to Dropbox..a replacement (no shipping or depreciation) was on its way.. along with an allowance to pay for the install. You can spend more, go faster, and get different configurations., but I couldn’t be happier with my choice.

I think with some power assist, I could kick in the help and get up tough hills. The price seems less than what I've seen other electric bicycles for - how are they able to come in at this price? Well, technically you could by pedaling hard and then braking. Only on the cargo bike, though (regenerative brakes)

    • @davidklein1667
      @davidklein1667 6 лет назад

      3many15 they have some models usually a better one, that has a charging mode called regenerative braking. When you brake you charge

    • @zugmeister314
      @zugmeister314 5 лет назад

      Regenerative breaking makes sense in a car, where you have tons of inertia slowing down from a fairly high speed to really run those motors. With a bicycle you don't that often have extra speed to dump, you want to preserve every MPH you can because that's directly less energy you have to provide in the first place. The economics don't work out with such a smaller, slower vehicle.

    Very helpful video review that you have here :) By the way, I bought the RadRover e-bike, unfortunately it rained hard here in Toronto and the bike was parked outside. Now the throttle and pedal assist is very unreliable. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work in the middle of my commute. The bike also accelerates by itself in full speed. The battery is no issue here because it was being charged indoor while it rained and I made sure that I dried the bike with cloth before installing the battery back. I've already contacted the manufacturer and it has been almost a week with no response from them.

      You're obviously new here or else you would know that Jerry's character is better and stronger than that. Once he gets something into his head he sticks with it and gives it 150%. His intention was to use the motor to assist his riding and not as a primary means of power. If you were paying attention to the video, that would have been glaringly obvious to you.
      And I was fully aware of what your implication was, dumbass. I was trying to enlighten and educate you. Next time I won't even waste my time.

    I got an electrically assisted bicycle over 2 years ago and it's still going strong. To be more accurate it is an electric scooter with a set of peddles attached to make it legal without a tag and licence. I had to replace the four lead acid batteries a few months ago and the tires and some light bulbs last year. Time for another back tire and I'll be good for a while again. I have thousands of miles on mine. It is rare for me to leave me driveway and not put at least 20+ miles on it before I get home and usually before I can charge again but it works for transportation since I am disabled. First off I bought this "bicycle" with the intent of easy transportation so the peddles are not practical they only provide a way to make the machine street legal without permission (tag and licence). Second, the power meter or "reserve capacity" indicator doesn't really indicate accurately unless you're excellerating and this gauge doesn't even begin to give useful feedback until you've depleteded 35%+ of the full charge. Third when that gauge hits the red when you accelerate to speed you have about 20% of your total distance left but you can double this by reducing your top speed by 50-60%, picking up speed downhill and losing speed uphill. This is on lead acid batteries which put out 48 volt @ 20 amh. My bike weighs about 180 lbs. and I weigh about 140 lbs. But the total capacity is about 350 lbs. with room for a passanger and lots of lock up storage. The steering and power locks up with the key too. This is the way to get around almost like a motorcycle but a bit slower and lot safer. If you want a legal self powered bicycle then these seem great, but if you want something more able and independent then look up one of these, XB-615.

    Riding a bike through dirt and especially sand is not a smart thing to do for the longevity of your bike. The sand will get into the bearings of the chain and grind them away a little bit which in turn lengthens the bicycle chain. If the lengthened chain is left on then it will start to damage the gear teeth sprockets. You can get chain cleaners that clip onto the chain and clean it (but it is still better to stop it getting dirty in the first place) and also metal tools to check if the chain is the right length.

    Electric is fine for riding on the roads, but these bikes should not EVER see mountain bike trails, especially if they have a throttle and are not pure pedal assist.
    Mountain bike trails are non-motorized only for good reason. This is a very slippery slope that will lead to what are essentially electric dirt bikes getting on MTB trails and ruining all the hard work of volunteers than built them. Not to mention the safety issues of people climbing and descending faster than their skill levels would allow on a real mountain bike.

      There are already laws in place so that any place that prohibits a motorized vehicle that stops any e-bike unless it has less than 750 watts. At the same time it also protects any e-bike under 750 watts from being restricted or considered a motor vehicle. 750 watts isn't going to tear up anything even grass.

    • @MtnXfreeride
      @MtnXfreeride 6 лет назад

      Nahh i ride a 250 watt hub motor on my cannondale mtn bike...its throttle only.. it turns flat trails into downhill trails, and makes the ride so much more fun yet still great exercise.. I just go further, faster on my rides now. Its the rider that needs to be responsible though... getting 500 plus watt hub motors can get you in trouble on twisted trails if you are not responsible.

    Hey Barnacules, I love your videos. Keep up the good work. I think it is awesome that you are using this bike to get back into the saddle. I think I cool monthly physical challenge, bike test, and video would be to find a really long scenic trail/road around the Seattle area and ride it until you burn through ¼ of a battery, then turn around and head back. Your goal each month could be to get further down the road/trail on the quarter battery then you did the previous month. I think such a test could show all the naysayers they are wrong and also really test the durability of the bike over time and its battery’s ability to hold a charge after repeated use.

      +David Lee Roth Define efficiency when talking about a brake. It is better to use the Motor to brake to recharge the battery but every halfway decent hydraulic brake can block the wheels on an instant so how can you brake still better than that?

      Turns out you know absolutely nothing about electric motors. Do your research, I don't have time to educate a child.

    You pedal that thing until it catches fire. All of that extra cargo you have will just shred off. I think you will be on a regular mountain bike earlier than you'd expect (if you're consistent on the E-bike first of course!)
    Keep it going Jerry!!
    .
    I'd like to have this bike. Seems like a lot of fun. I live in mostly flat country but the downside of wind and big gusts. Turn a corner on a bike and it's like you hit a brick wall.

      It's alot of money for a bike yes, but compared to other e-bikes it's a really good deal... and those are generally hideous too!

      Yes, but think about all the money you would save from not owning a car. I'm not calling it a replacement, but this is a motor vehicle, and no good motor vehicle is cheap.

      For an e-bike that's actually REALLY cheap.

    Cant tell you how happy i am for you Jerrry, haven"t seen you that stoked for a long time. Well done on the vid to. One of your best. Just got back into MTB myself about 18 months ago. i was fortunate to pick up a Scott Genius LT 710 for a crazy price. Best thing I"ve done in years. Maybe 2 things to think of, possible conversion to hydraulic brakes..shimano SLX maybe. And more importanly, a MTB helmet. more protection on the side and back of you head. i look forward to your long term review. have fun and stay safe mate.

    spending $1500 on dietician/nutritionist advice and using the bike you already own would be more beneficial to your health than this e-bike

      The point of the bike is to go further with ease not to get fit. I am not big but a 13 mile bike ride to school everyday with a 40lbs backpack makes me sweat even during winter and i have a specialized carbon road bike. So now imagine being able to go without soiling clothes in the process or having to always pack more clothes and not have to pay for gas, car note, or car insurance with is mandatory in the us as soon as you get you license. That $1500 price tag doesn't seem so bad when you compare it to car that essentially does the same thing. The reason why he is getting it is to ride a bike more and to embrace the tech hence his name "NERD"GASM. With just riding a bike even motorcyclists can vouch for this that you are getting an exercise just riding it since you are using a lot more muscles than just your calfs to brake and accelerate and your arms to steer and shift. Plus if he starts feeling better riding his electric he will eventually venture into riding his santa cruz

      and for the record, 8 months ago i was 250lb, now im 183 after a regular bike exercise plan 3 times (7 hours) a week and a dietary change. i know what it's like to be overweight, it's not fun, but cheating out with a motor isn't the way forward

      It allows you to have more freedom, he could simply ride it like a normal bike and when he gets too tired to continue turn on the assist.

      hyprfocal depends. If you don't listen to the nutristionists then the money was lost. On the other hand the ebike can bring great joy which leads to increased activities.
