And Your Bird Can Sing- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)

- Written by Lennon and appearing on the Revolver album, And Your Bird Can Sing features harmonized lead guitars by Paul McCartney and George Harrison on their Epiphone Casinos
After recording an early version in the key of D major on April 20 1966, John decided to raise the key to E major. He applied a capo to his guitar on the second fret, so he could still play a D major shape. They recorded the finished version on April 26th, which is heard on the album
It's not clear which guitar John used for the rhythm guitar, as he had multiple guitars he could've used during Revolver. He had his Epiphone Casino, a Gretsch 6120, and his Fender Black Stratocaster. His rhythm guitar is fairly clean and was most likely played into a Fender Showman amp, which had a tremolo channel. I hear a very subtle, slow tremolo on his guitar
I did some tests with my Gretsch 6122 and Casino, and settled on the Casino on the bridge pickup as the strongest possibility for John's guitar. I'm plugged into my Fender Deluxe Reverb, with these tremolo settings on the amp-
Vol: 2.2
Treb: 5.5
Bass: 3
Speed: 3.1
Intensity: 4.9
It is confirmed (from multiple interviews and historians) that George and Paul played the lead guitars at the same time, in harmony. They used their Epiphone Casinos, but it's not certain which amp they used. Because they recorded the parts live, and their tones are nearly identical, it's possible they plugged into the same amplifier. This technique was used later on Lady Madonna, when George and John plugged into a Vox Conqueror with two inputs
George and Paul could've plugged into the two inputs of the Vox UL730, or one of their Fender amps. I'm using my Epiphone Casino into my 1965 Fender Bassman. I'm using an Aclam Doctor Robert overdrive pedal, which is a clone of the Vox UL730 circuit
Interesting quirks:
0:41 rhythm guitar plays a Csharp9 chord with the low Gsharp on the Low E string
0:42 the lower harmony plays Bb and Eb together before the C sharp chord
1:11 the lower harmony plays a sustained Bb note before the C sharp chord
1:49 the lower harmony plays an extra E note, pulling off to Eb
1:54 the rhythm guitar ends on an Ab6 chord, basically a G chord with the open high E

I wore three different colored turtleneck sweaters to differentiate each beatle:
Black- John
Yellow- George
Green- Paul
George’s yellow is a nod to his yellow jumper in Get Back 😁
Gone troppo
LOL Awesome
Great job Sam on colored turtleneck, but keeping all 3 guitars with the same colors. We can't miss them!😊
George also raised the ire of other parents (Aunt Mimi, perhaps?) back in their early days by wearing a canary yellow shirt around town, which was considered to be in poor taste back in the late 50's/early 60's.
The lead playing is so sophisticated that I never noticed until seeing this just how simple John's part is. It's amazing how The Beatles could make a 3-chord progression sound so intricate.
uhh. he wrote the licks to this song. it's literally his song.
I thought paul wrote the lead parts? @@jshkings89
@@jshkings89he wrote some of the lyrics and the chord progression. george and paul wrote the leads, and paul assisted with the lyrics. john later went on to speak extremely bitterly about the piece, calling it a shit throwaway likely bc his mediocre lyrics were overshadowed by the beautiful harmonized guitars and he was very aware and self conscious of his much weaker musicianship
@@swill6500 he talked so much shit on his Beatles repretoir. irks me.

This track was years ahead of it's time :)
This song feels like an incredible Journey for only 2 minutes!
Agreed. The amount of talent the Beatles could pack into 2 minutes is STILL truly astounding.
The part at 0:36 is one of the greatest pieces of music ever, I love it when instruments have almost this feeling of regret in their sound, and something about that point has the beautiful regret sound that I seriously can't get over, that one bit was the first thing I learnt on guitar (or at least tried to)
Yes, that musical climb-down, beginning with a minor (sad) chord, but ending that passage in an upbeat, major-chord turnaround (matching the hopeful lyrics) - really brilliant and moving.
@@emanuelmota7217 I have always thought D minor was the moodiest chord of any. Not sure why.
This is some of their most impressive lead work in my opinion and you captured it perfectly as always Sam! Keep up the great work.
Happy 57th birthday Revolver!
Great to have the leads in stereo, it’s something I wished that The Beatles could have done back then!
You just keep blowing me away with your awesome talent
I'm a die hard Beatle fan since their music arrived on the radio in America in 1963. I was 5 years old. Your videos help me find a deeper appreciation for their genius
Thank you
Thank you!
this guy is very good
Indeed!
dude, this is incredible. Thank you for making this.
I enjoy going to Beatle tribute band concerts, my favorite being 1964. Every time the lead guitar player finishes the lead break to this song the audience applauds. They know.
I've been learning Roger McGuinn's Byrds 12-string parts with the finger-picks and banjo rolls. I found out that the simplest and most repetitive parts are sometimes the hardest to master because they require the player to have a precise, rhythmic "feel" that transforms a simple part into something worth listening to. It takes years of practice to pull it off and it's what separates the pros from everybody else.
The only thing missing was Paul's superb bass playing!!😁🇬🇧
Great! One of my favorite Beatles songs
People who think the Beatles were overrated are such fools! They never take the time to truly dissect the songs to understand their brilliance? I knew it immediately when I first listened to my dad’s copy of Meet The Beatles when I was 8 in ‘74
Hey Sam without a doubt the best cover that you have ever done, three epiphone casinos playing at once. Doesn't get much better.
Yesss, been waiting for this number! Talk about NAILING the tone!
You nailed, note-for-note, the coolest guitar duo evah !!! Great job Sam, your covers are awesome !
Another outstanding video - Thank you Sam!
Yessss! I've been waiting for this one.
Amazing as always, Sam!
What a brilliant track and beautifully played! Love the combination of simple chords and the intricate lead parts.
Fantastic cover mate! Killer job playing the lead guitar parts and you definitely nailed the rhythm part!
Thank you, Sam. As always, amazingly good!
Such a good song, thank you sam
Sounds absolutely brilliant Well Done
Thank you for this, man. God, I love your work!
Thanks!
Love the way you just casually tweak the tuning on 2 guitars at almost the identical spot. Classy. One of my all time favourite Beatle tracks and guitar parts to die for. Top job
Revolver is the 2nd best Beatles album behind Abbey Road in my opinion. This album has so good tunes and it sound just so great because of the instrumental and production work that‘s done on this album. Tomorrow Never Knows and And Your Bird Can Sing, being my favourite songs on the album, show great showcase of this. And of course perfect cover as always Sam 👌🏼
I used to think I was the only one who thought Abbey Road and Revolver were their two favorite Beatles albums (in that order). But I’ve been seeing quite a few people saying that in the last few months.
Long waited fantastic cover
This song is one of my favorites, you’ve captured the guitar harmonies so well!
Sam, this is by far one of my favorite Revolver songs, and you play it amazingly! Massive props to you 🙌
Thanks!
Was waiting for this song's cover. Finally it's out... 🤩🤩🤩
Amazing!
So great 🙂🎶🎵🎸
The genuine best lead guitar cover I've ever seen of this song, and I'm usually quite picky about the feel of a lead part. Even the tone is just spectacular. Amazing work, man.
Thank you!
Yeah Sam!!! You are Paul and George together!!😊😊
It has finally arrived. And it’s…beautiful 🥲
Just incredible, Sam
Beautiful rendition ✌
Excellent material!
Wooooow, thats super amazing
My wonderboy Sam brings a wonderful sound ! Really, really good
Ex took custody of all my Beatle albums (some mono) but I was happy to have Beatles IV (US Capitol) with this great song!
I love this song!
Pretty cool tone! Nice to see the small details in John's strumming
Amazing job as always!
Thanks mike ❤️
Really enjoyed that......gotta love your G-string tweaking at 1:23, sharp on one take and flat on the other. I said no way did he fix it but damn, the closing WAS in fact better. Bravo!
Exceptional 👏👏👏
Великолепно ! Превосходно ! Просто блестяще ! Проделана большая работа,а за цветовую дифференциацию - отдельное спасибо ! Всё получилось замечательно ! Большое спасибо !
👍
The Beatles had magic. And this song is exhibit A.
Great choice!
That's my top 3 favorite songs by them. The guitars are SOOO great in this song. Great job, Sam! Always thought they used Casino for the rhythm, but some people claimed it was other guitars.
Thanks! It’s possible it was gretsch for rhythm
This RAWKS! This COOKS! This does some other third thing!
Impressive...most impressive
So nice
Bravo!!!
Very Cool!!! 🎉
nice work mate
🎶And Your Bird Can Sing!🎶
this is a godsend, I've been trying to put this together by ear and from tabs and everything seems wrong. Props!
Bravissimo 👏👏👏
Excellent! With that now being done, hopefully soon enough, your friend Michael Sokil (aka mjsokes) might start doing his own instrumental cover version of the song (Given that he's already done several instrumental covers of some of the other tracks on the UK Revolver album. We know that he still has a few more tracks from the UK Rubber Soul album to do instrumental covers of as well). So, we'll both keep watch for when Michael does those covers (And Sam, you too could also get involved in them again when needed).
Wow!
very nice 🙏🏼
Thanks!
Thanks!!!
Muy bueno !!
Отличная работа 😊
Excellent Sam was worth waiting for I particularly like your right hand technique on the rhythm I’ve been able to sort of play that but can’t get my head around the lead bits I always seem to get in a bit of a twist with that Never mind Utd win away and curry for tea tonight take care keep up the good work 🏴
Thanks! John has a very particular strumming style that I haven’t quite mastered
so cool! i usually thought that george on his sg, paul on casino and john in strat for this song
Ooh that’s an interesting combo.
@@Luke_D9 it might be my future favourite combo
Maybe your best yet Sam! Joe Walsh said once he learned to play both parts together…he didn’t know it was overdubbed!! Well done indeed!!
Idk how he pulled off doing that!
This is excellent! Love your channel and the insights! Have a request: No Matter What by Badfinger. I didn't see it on your channel. Thanks!
You might be in luck 👀
👏👏👏👏
Superb work, love this tune and album. Can't believe lennon said it was a throw away tune he just knocked up?? John being John I suppose?
Class class classssssssss
Wow,and these guys were just in their twenties coming up with these intricate guitar parts.
They were in their twenties for ALL of the Beatles music they created! Truly astounding
Nice
Since 1966 I have thought John played his Ric on this, maybe because I can get very close to his sound using my Ric, but you may be right. The Casino sounds very good. Ever thought about just trying the Ric one time to see for yourself how it plays the piece?
Excellent job on the three parts, by the way. You make it look easy.
I don’t have a Rick 6 string but I’ve heard that theory he used one here. I don’t personally believe it because he stopped using that guitar in 65. But it’s possible
Aint no way you posting this right when im trying to learn the bassline to this song
I will never forget hearing this song for the first time as a kid and thought the electric guitars was the coolest thing I had ever heard except of course the Beatles harmonies... excellent Sam as always and Claypool Lennon?
Thanks! Who’s claypool Lennon?
@@sampopkin something I mentioned a month or so ago - you have to check out the Claypool Lennon Delirium!!!
@@sampopkin ruclips.net/video/hnmqVrr8ZOA/видео.html
I was thinking it was a gretsch but hearing this definitely makes me think john was on a casino
Great Cover as Always. I would like to hear you doing cover of Paperback Writer since I can't hear John's rhytm guitar clearly which he used his gretsch according by several sources on internet.
Will do 👍
That is awesome! Keep up the good work Sam! Can you do I’m Only Sleeping?
Sure!
This is so good it made me cry. Well done, Sam. It made me remember playing with toys on the floor, with my Brother, and hearing for the first time.
❤️
Sounds terrific Sam!👍 this is a lot different that what I was taught back 80'. My first solo:) it's a bit different and I was should how to play the 2 as one which sound horrible. I was also showed that this was played with bar chords and the Magic E. Too late now for me to relearn it. I originally told George was a little ticked about playing one of the 2 when asked by a reporter and even said Paul played both. Have no idea on that story. It was long ago. Wonder what the truth was, cause he obviously could have played both. The lack of practice and only playing the sitar only, didn't hit till revolver. George even said he wasting 3 1/2 years on the sitar and it hurt his playing. He didn't practice guitar at all. He only played in the studio. That's why he started playing slide guitar as he said himself. One thing for sure, wish there was a youtube in 1980 :) Oh, the next George song you cover, how about Cheer Down? Take care
Thanks! It’s amazing how many different ways there are to play the same song. I try my best to get it as accurate as possible, from what my ears can make of it. Glad it’s somewhat educational
@@sampopkin I'm sure your ears were more prodical then mine at 14. 40 plus years and I still have a sound that I don't like. Still get trapped in those boxes, still noodle, lol. Hopefully you could do Georges Cheer Down or what I consider his masterpiece, Life Itself. Take care
🙏🙏🙏
Fantastic. Have you done She Said She Said? John said, “Listen to the guitars on that song. The guitars are fantastic.”
She Said She Said- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)
ruclips.net/video/HlzsoLl5nx4/видео.html
I read that John didn't like it. It's one of my favorite Beatles songs.
Can you do John's bass version on let it be with your bass vi
5150 percent cool
were starting to find out a lot of paul lead parts no one knew he played.
Awesome cover Sam! The dual lead guitars by Paul and George were amazing. Out of curiosity, how did you guess who played which of the two lead guitar parts? I always wondered who played the lower part and who played the higher part.
Thanks. I didn’t really have to make a guess as to who played what. But I assumed paul played the higher part. I had George in a yellow sweater because it’s the one he wore in Get Back
I think the lower harmony is a trickier one to come up with. The higher one is the one that drives the song so I think Paul played the high one. George would be able to figure out a complex harmony below it
That's George and Paul trading licks. Paul is a great bass and guitar player.
Fabulous.
My honest question is: how in the world did you manage to make out what each lead guitar played? I can barely distinguish one from the other in the original record. Mad respect for you ❤
It wasn’t easy! Fortunately the isolated tracks separate rhythm from lead. But paul and George’s harmonies are stuck together
I just realized that the trapezoid inlays on the new Gibson-made Casinos are flipped horizontally lol
Yeah so weird..
Great job with this. Does your guitar have consistent tuning issues? I noticed you adjusted the G at the same exact time on both lead takes.
Not terrible tuning issues, just normal g string issue like on most Gibson style guitars. Normally I would cut that out of the video, but I wanted it to be all one take
I always figured John played his 6120, because the tone sounds similar to his rhythm playing on “Paperback Writer”. But that could have more to do with the Showman and the subtle tremolo.
Likewise, I always figured George played his SG. I haven’t seen any photos of him with his Casino from the Revolver sessions, only his SG and Strat. And it seems like he favored the SG until they went on tour in June.
Very possible! Although it’s pretty well documented that George and Paul both played Casinos
@@sampopkin It would make sense, having dual Casinos through the same amp, just as he and John had done with their Strats on “Nowhere Man”.
Hey just wondering what settings did you use on your dr.Robert pedal cause I’ve been trying to get that tone but I just can’t seem to get it exact

Excellent! Is Paul in green and George in yellow? Good job.
Yes, I’m not sure who played the low or high. But that’s what I assumed
