  • Probably the first time I heard of the character Queen of Sheba is in my high school book. And then I remembered again when I visited Axum in Ethiopia in 2017. The character is mentioned in Hebrew Bible and her ruling area was mentioned as Arabia Felix. In the Bible and the Quran, it is mentioned that she ruled the kingdom of Marib in Yemen around 1000BC, though her legend is also told in Ethiopia, across the Red Sea. The Bible dates Sheba's reign to the 10th century BC. The Quran describes the queen as a sun-worshipper who lived in the Arabian peninsula and was converted to Islam. In Christian scripts, the character was mentioned as "Queen of South". All of these I came to know after reading several articles on her.
It was September last year and I was hovering over google maps in Northern Emirates to find a suitable location for a weekend getaway and suddenly found a spot saying Queen of Sheeba’s Palace. I did not hear any relation of the queen with UAE. So, out of immense interest, I visited there on Sep 10th. Once I reached the spot, just beside Shamal village, it was already sunset time and looking at the entrance, I wasn’t pretty sure whether visiting the place is allowed or not. Anyway, I moved on. It goes through decaying stairs and after a while there is a water storage pool on the ground. After passing it, need to go a little up and the structure of a watchtower is on the edge of the hill. The area is surrounded by beautiful hills and the view of the village from the top is quite impressive.
There is no archaeological evidence that the place is in any way pre- Islamic - no carvings, no written history. It is assumed to be built in post Julphar period during the Portuguese reign i.e. in 17th century. The assumptions were based on the few items found here and the location is pretty strategic for surveillance.
